Accutane Side Effects Lawyer: Hair Loss, Depression, Suicide

You probably know the drug isotretinoin by its trade name, accutane. Accutane is a powerful drug often used to treat acne. Unlike other acne treatments, which are simply antibacterial agents, accutane actually changes the composition of the skin. Accutane causes skin to produce less oil, which almost always results in a reduction of acne. Accutane is very powerful and effective, but this comes with some very dangerous side effects that everybody should be aware of. If used or administered improperly, accutane can do more harm than good.

Some patients develop terrible headaches that can lead to brain aneurisms.

Almost everybody who uses accutane suffers from mild side effects like itchy skin, chapped lips, hair loss, and nosebleeds. These are very minor compared with some of the more dramatic side effects. Accutane causes horrible birth defects if used while a mother is pregnant, and women taking accutane have to sign a contract that they are willing to undertake an abortion if they become pregnant during or directly after their use of accutane. Other problems include decreased night vision, joint pain, and disorders of the intestinal and urinary systems.

Some patients taking accutane fall into severe depression and many have committed suicide. The actual numbers are hard to come by because the majority of accutane users are young adolescents, an age group that is always plagued by raging hormones and emotional swings. When these young people take their lives while using accutane their families do not always realize that the depression, and resulting death, was actually caused by the drug. Some people feel that drug companies should be held responsible for distributing a drug with side effects as life-threatening as the disease of depression.

If you or someone you love is using accutane and is suffering from any of these terrible side effects, please talk to a trained drug lawyer. Victims across the country are filing suit with Roche Pharmaceuticals, the makers of accutane, to gain justice for the terrible side effects accutane has unleashed. Accutane can produce pleasing aesthetic results, but at a potentially devastating cost in health risks. ga

Facts About Hair Loss

Alopecia. A dreaded word for any man, or woman, who know it's true meaning and who have experienced it first hand. I'm talking about hair loss. Although alopecia, or hair loss, can occur anywhere on the body, it is most upsetting when it happens on the scalp where the loss can be embarrassing and difficult to cover up.

Any number of factors can be attributed to excessive hair loss such as an illness or major surgery, or the stress related to these. Some medications can contribute to hair loss. For women, hormone fluctuations, such as pregnancy can cause hair loss. Hair loss attributed to any of these causes is generally only temporary.

Most female hair loss occurs over the entire scalp. Women's hair loss generally begins at any age through 50, or later, and may not have any hereditary association. If you are a woman experiencing hair loss it is best to seek advice from a professional in hair restoration. Be aware that sometimes hair loss can be a sign of illness.

It is believed that approximately 35 million men in the United States suffer from hair loss that is called male pattern hair loss. This hair loss usually starts at an early age and develops into more extensive baldness. This is an inherited trait. This hair loss in men is caused by what is called DHT, which is a hormone in men that causes the hair follicle to shrink.

There are many, many treatments that claim to help with hair loss. Natural shampoos with natural algae and botanicals, shampoo with natural DHT inhibitors and nutrients, and some treatments that combine essential oils with a pulsed electromagnetic field. Minoxidil is a cream that is applied directly to the scalp several times a day. Propecia is a pill taken once daily which is advertised to be safe and effective for male pattern hair loss. This is one of the hair loss remedies that claims to halt the effects of DHT - dihydrotestosterone - the reason men have thinning and hair loss. Another of these products is Avodart.

When looking through the treatments and remedies available it is important to remember that hair loss in men and women are caused by different factors and to choose accordingly.

Natural Hair Loss Remedy Discovered in Apples

The news spread like lightning across the Internet...
In Japanese clinical trials, a safe, natural polyphenol compound from apples was proven to promote new hair growth in men with male pattern baldness. In the first double-blind clinical study, 29 balding men were treated with the apple procyanidin solution. After 6 months, researchers reported that both vellus and terminal hair growth were "significantly greater" than placebo control group subjects.

For some women, improper care, or being "hard" on the hair can cause hair loss. This would be most common for women who wear their hair in pigtails or tight cornrows. The pulling and tugging can cause hair loss and can promote scarring of the scalp. If the pulling and tugging are stopped hair will usually grow back normally. Years of this type of abuse can cause permanent scarring which can prevent regrowth of hair.

(Vellus hairs are short hairs, only a centimeter or two long. The follicles that produce them never produce any other kind of hairs. Terminal hairs are the long hairs that grow on the head.)

Increased Number of Terminal Hairs
The next study involved 21 men in various stages of hereditary hair loss. After 12 months of topical treatment, researchers reported that "71% of subjects showed an increased number of hairs." They also noted "a clear trend towards increased number of non-vellus hairs."

A "Potential Cure" for Male Pattern Baldness
After 12 months of study, the scientists concluded that "procyanidin therapy shows promise as a potential cure for male pattern baldness."

In a third study of 29 balding men, this time for 4 months, 78.9% showed an increased mean value of hair diameter. Increased ratio of thicker hairs was "significantly higher" than placebo controls and the increase in the number of total hairs was "significantly greater."

200% Better Than Minoxidil
Seven different published studies now confirm the profound hair-growth promoting effects of apple procyanidins. In tests on human hair cells, apple chemicals proved twice as effective as minoxidil to promote hair growth. The apple extracts were also clearly superior to less potent grape and grape seed extracts.

Procyanidins Activate Hair Follicle Growth
The richest known source of procyanidin B-2 is the skins of immature (baby) green apples. Polyphenols from apples have an astonishing range of health effects, and may be nature's perfect antioxidant. Many people taking apple procyanidins in pill form notice faster hair growth, stronger fingernails, and softer, smoother skin.

In every study, apple procyanidins have proven completely safe for humans and animals. There is no toxicity, no irritation, and no side effects. This natural hair loss remedy may be nature's best option for millions of people who suffer from thinning hair, falling hair, and male pattern baldness.

Causes of Hair Loss

The normal cycle of hair growth and loss means that some amount of hair loss will occur in every individual's life. It is said that at any given point in time, about 10% of the hair on our scalp is in a resting phase which sheds after a couple of months, giving way to new hair growth. This growing phase lasts for 2 to 6 years when each hair grows about 1 centimeter per month. Hence, almost 90 percent of the hair is growing at any one time. Regular hair shedding is part of this cycle; however, some people experience excessive hair loss.

Excessive hair loss, however, is cause for concern. A number of reasons may lead to excessive hair loss. Any major illness, fungal infections or surgery may be major reasons. Hormonal problems like hypo or hyper thyroidism or male (androgens) or female (estrogens) hormones imbalance leads to hair loss. Post pregnancy hair loss is also common as a hormone imbalance occurs at this time as well. Medicines for ailments like diabetes, chemotherapy, lupus, gout, blood coagulation, birth control and anti-depressants can cause hair loss too. Improper hair care can also lead to hair loss. Excessive use of chemicals or blow-drying for hair styling leads to hair loss as it scars the scalp, sometimes leading to permanent damage. Common baldness usually refers to male-pattern baldness. It is the most common type of inherited hair loss trait in men where hair loss typically results in a receding hairline and baldness on the top of the head.

Female-pattern baldness in women leads to hair thinning over the entire scalp. It is important to determine the exact reason for your hair loss. Check on your diet first. Switch over to a healthy diet of fruits, green vegetables and fibers to be washed down with at least 2 liters of water each day. Cut down on fried and fatty food. Follow a hair care regimen of hot oil treatment, massage, conditioning and shampooing on a regular basis. If you're a woman, check the regularity of your menstrual cycle, pregnancy status and menopause. The only way to deal with hair loss is to learn the causes, look for the right remedy, then come to a decision on what you want to do, and go for it. One should also take steps to prevent hair loss from recurring in future.

Natural Hair Loss Remedies

There is again no sure-fire way to prevent all hair loss; however, there are some methods that have been used that work on some people. Massage and aromatherapy have been used with some success. In minor cases of temporary hair loss, hair growth can be stimulated by massage, since blood and oxygen flow to the scalp must be healthy in order for hair to grow. A blend of six drops each of lavender and bay essential oils in a base of fourounces of either almond, soybean or sesame oil massaged into the scalp and allowed to sit for 20 minutes has been used by aroma therapists to stimulate the scalp.

Once the mixture is in the scalp for 20 minutes, wash your hair and scalp with your normal shampoo mixed with three drops of bay essential oil. Massaging the scalp in general for a couple of minutes a day can stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and in mild cases stimulate some hair growth.

Studies have shown Saw Palmetto extract is an effective anti-androgen and therefore there is promise for its effectiveness as an effective treatment for hair loss prevention. Women who take Saw Palmetto should cease doing so when taking oral contraceptives or hormone therapy.

Nettles are rich in vitamins A and C, several key minerals and lipids that can be beneficial to the hair. Nettle Root Extract has been used successfully in Europe as an inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase in treating BPH. As mentioned earlier, 5-alpha reductase is a key component in turning testosterone into DHT, the substance that causes the atrophy of hair follicles. Therefore there is great promise in its use as a component in natural hair loss treatments. Nettle Root Extract is available at health food stores over the counter, and has few side effects.

Rosemary and sage are two herbs that have shown benefit traditionally when used externally. It is suggested that to promote a clean scalp, stimulation of the hair root, and thickening hair one should boil together in water rosemary, sage, peach leaf, nettle and burdock. Then strain the loose herbs from the liquid and use the liquid to wash the hair daily. Aloe Vera has been used by Native Americans, Indians and many in the Caribbean to promote healthy hair and prevent hair loss. Aloe's positive effects on the skin are well known, and likewise it can help the scalp by healing it and balancing the pH level of the scalp while cleansing the pores. A common preparation of Aloe Vera gel with a small amount of wheat germ oil and coconut milk is used as a shampoo and has traditionally shown great benefit.

Of course, if you do not want to go through the trouble of concocting your own formulas, similar products, or products containing these ingredients, may be found in the health food store if one does some searching.

How To Nip The Problem In The Bud... Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss is universal problem and millions of people worldwide are suffering from some degree of hair loss. There are several cures for hair loss.

However, they do not work on all. Some types of hair loss or baldness do not respond to the treatments. Nevertheless, hair loss is preventable and good care and regular maintenance of hair can go a long way in preventing hair loss. Here are some tips to take care of your mane -

#1 Keep it Clean
Dirt and excess oil in the scalp can clog the pores, making it difficult for the hair root to receive nutrition and grow. This is a major reason for hair loss. Frequently shampoo your hair and use clean combs. Trimming of split ends is essential to prevent major hair damage.

#2 Take Care Of Diet
Ultimately, the hair, like any other body part, requires nutrition to stay healthy and grow. Malnutrition and imbalanced diet can be a major reason for hair loss. Include vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, chromium, iodine, potassium, zinc and Vitamin A in your diet. There is no need to take mega doses because they can at times be counterproductive. Evidence suggests that excess of Vitamins A and E can actually contribute to hair loss.

#3 Do Not Overdo It
Excessive exposure to heat and chemicals such as hair colors, styling products, hot iron and blow dryers can cause damage to hair and result in severe hair loss. You should use these products sparingly. Instead of blow dryers, make time to allow your hair to dry naturally. Get your hair styled in a manner that does not require any of the above-mentioned procedures.

#4 Give Yourself A Head Massage
A gentle head massage with a hair oil helps to improve blood circulation to the hair roots and prevent hair loss. Aromatherapy recommends creating hair oil using equivalent parts of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.

#5 Avoid Stress
Stress is damaging for the hair. Get adequate sleep and follow stress reduction techniques to prevent hair loss.

#6 Be Careful Of Medication
Certain medications such as anti-depressants, some drugs taken for epilepsy, cancer have hair loss as a side effect. Consult with your doctor before taking medication to prevent hair loss.

#7 Hormone Tests
Thyroid disorders can cause hair loss. Get hormone tests for thyroid on a regular basis.

It is rightly said that prevention is better than cure.
