Hair Loss Articles, Tips and Information

Menopause And Hair Loss

Menopause causes many biochemical changes in your body and often menopause and hair loss occur simultaneously. Rather menopause causes hair loss in women. Although women rarely turn bald due to menopause and hair loss, it occurs mainly as thinning of hair. Before menopause, high estrogen levels negate the effects of low testosterone levels. However, during menopause, higher testosterone levels combine with enzyme 5 alpha reductase to form DHT, the main cause for thinning of hair in women.

Regular hair and scalp massage increases blood circulation to hair follicles and promotes better growth to combat menopause and hair loss problems.

Statistics on Menopause and Hair Loss

More than twenty-five million American women experience emotional distress due to menopause and hair loss. Only thirteen percent of women experience hair loss before menopause. However, this increases to thirty seven percent, which highlights the relationship between menopause and hair loss. Such hair loss is an overall thinning of hair, especially around the forehead and crown of the scalp.

Natural ways of dealing with Menopause and Hair Loss

Although you cannot combat the causes for menopause and hair loss, you can reduce your hair loss considerably. Consume a variety of vegetables and fruits with whole grains in your daily diet. Lack of Biotin is the main cause for thinning of hair. Eating biotin rich foods like green peas, brown rice, oats, lentils, soy products, sunflower seeds, walnuts, etc. can lower effects of menopause and hair loss.

Eat salmon and B-vitamin rich foods like egg yolks, avocados, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, asparagus, peanuts, bananas, soybeans, herring, mackerel, etc. to prevent problems of menopause and hair loss. Leafy greens, bell peppers, alfalfa sprouts, beets, and whole grains contain lot of silicon, which aids and promotes hair growth.

Avoid rough handling of hair by combing through wet hair and avoid using hot blow dryers to prevent hair loss during menopause. Decrease in the crowing glory in women leads to various problems of depression during menopause and hair loss. Women look less feminine. You can alter your hairstyling to mask effects of menopause and hair loss.

Shorter and layered hair can add more bounce to your hair. Use a good mousse or soft gel to provide better looks to your hair without harming or increasing problems due to menopause and hair loss.

Treatments for Hair Loss during Menopause

Doctors recommend intake of different medicines like dutasteride, propecia, and regain to combat menopause and hair loss problems. Other costlier alternative treatments for menopause and hair loss problems include hair weaving, stem cell therapy, hair transplantation, EXT and stereoscopic follicular unit hair transplantation, etc. These treatments cost more than $20,000. A combination of Dutasteride with stereoscopic follicular unit hair transplantation provides excellent results for hair loss occurring due to menopause.

Hair Loss and Menopause

Menopause results in many physical changes in a woman's body. There is a rapid hair loss menopause due to changes in the hormonal levels in the woman's body. The female hormone estrogen balances out the effects of androgens like DHT. After menopause estrogen, production reduces. Testosterone in the woman's body combines with an enzyme to produce DHT that causes hair loss menopause.

One way to combat hair loss menopause is to eat food that is more nutritious. A woman must eat green leafy vegetables that contain vitamins, zinc and copper. Intake of vitamin C, B and E in food promotes hair growth. One must eat herbs, as fennel seeds that are a good source of vitamin C. Citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C. However, there must be a proper balance between vitamin C, zinc and copper intake. An increase in vitamin C and zinc inhibits absorption of copper and vice versa.

Women must use a hairbrush to comb wet hair. This avoids breakage and thus reduces hair loss menopause. Women who swim must avoid exposure to chlorinated water. For this, they must wear a cap while swimming and use chlorine filter to filter the water during a shower.

Amino acids promote the growth of scalp hair. However, menopause occurs with aging when the body absorbs less amino acid. Therefore, women must take high sulfur content foods that contain amino acids, like eggs. Those allergic to eggs can consume sulfur in the form of a supplement that is available at all pharmacists. These diet modifications can greatly reduce hair loss menopause.

One can adopt measures to slow down hair loss menopause. This includes stimulating the scalp with a massage or simply running one's fingers through one's scalp. This stimulates blood flow and promotes hair growth.

Hair loss menopause greatly affects women's self-esteem and confidence. This is because there is a change in their physical appearance with growing age. A good haircut that gives a fuller appearance to the hair is compulsory for such women. Hair loss menopause is a natural phenomenon that is nonreversible. Changes in one's diet and a stress on natural ingredients in hair maintenance can greatly prolong the life of one's hair. One can take medication like propecia for hair growth or go for a hair transplant to get a new crop of hair. However, these treatments are long-term and costly. Therefore, one must weigh the risks and payoffs of every treatment before selecting the best solution for hair loss menopause.

What is Alopecia Areata - Hair Loss

What is it?

Alopecia Areata is a disease that causes hair loss. It usually affects the scalp, but can also affect other areas of the body that have hair. The hair loss is quite rapid, and occurs in patches.

Another way to minimize hair loss menopause is to condition hair with natural products like henna. This gives natural color to the hair and is a good conditioner. One must use fewer chemicals in washing hair and change shampoos frequently. It is advisable to let hair dry naturally rather than using a hair dryer for the same.

Who can get it?

Anyone at any age can get alopecia areata. Most often, young adults and children are affected. Men and women are both equally affected.

What causes Alopecia Areata?

The causes and reasons for alopecia areata are unknown. Current research suggests it is caused by a problem with the immune system. In people with alopecia areata, for unidentified reasons, the body's immune system disrupts normal hair formation when it attacks the hair follicles. Heredity seems to play a role as alopecia areata often runs in families. It is not contagious. There are many in the medical community that believes stress may cause or contribute to alopecia areata. There is no proof of this currently, and several studies are looking at this.

Alopecia Areata Symptoms

The primary symptom of alopecia areata is round spots of hair loss on the scalp. The symptoms can vary dramatically. Some people get bald patches (patchy alopecia areata), while others may get complete baldness of the scalp (alopecia totalis). Less common is to lose all scalp and body hair (alopecia universalis). People affected with alopecia areata are usually in otherwise good health.

How is Alopecia Areata diagnosed?

It is important to have a dermatologist diagnose this disease. There are other diseases that can cause hair loss that are treatable.

A dermatologist can usually diagnose alopecia areata through a visual examination. They look for "exclamation point hair" in the areas of the hair loss. Exclamation point hairs are short broken off hairs that stick straight up, and are usually close to the scalp. Sometimes a biopsy is done, and the sample is examined under a microscope.

This condition will generally clear up on its own within several months to several years. About half of all people affected will grow their hair back within a year without getting any treatment. However, the condition can reoccur at any time. Reoccurrence is common.

The more widespread the hair loss, or the longer it lasts, the less likely that the hair will grow back. A doctor can prescribe several drugs, including creams and steroid injections. Many people also respond well to drugs that promote hair growth. No one treatment works for everyone, and for some people, no treatments are effective. They just have to let the disease run its course. It is best to discuss the options with your doctor.

The effects or this disease are mainly psychological. Hair loss often leads to a reduced self-image. The scalp is more susceptible to sun damage due to the loss of hair. Also, due to the loss of nasal hair, hay fever and similar allergic conditions can worsen. Due to social discomfort, many women with this disease will wear wigs.

Selecting A Hair Loss Treatment

We treat it with care, brush it every day and hope it's never out of place. But when hair begins to lose its thickness and leaves our brush draped with locks, it may be time to consider a hair loss treatment. There are several factors that may lead to hair loss, including certain medications, medical treatments, improper care, poor nutrition or illness. No matter the reason, the loss of one's hair can be an embarrassing occurrence for many. With a proper diagnosis, a dermatologist can recommend a customized approach and an effective hair loss treatment.

In the beginning, a patient may be prescribed some type of medication in order to help prevent further hair loss. This would depend entirely on the determined cause, but is often an early approach to fighting against continued loss. Perhaps the most widely recognized hair loss treatment is Rogaine, which is available by prescription only. For individuals who do not seem to respond to regular treatments, or simply want a fast and effective hair loss treatment, a transplant may be their preferred approach.

A hair loss treatment is one that helps to prevent recurrence, but a hair transplant is thought to be a permanent resolution. This procedure includes the removal of skin and hair from another area of the head and transplanted to the location of hair loss. This procedure is commonly used on men who are experiencing male pattern baldness because there is usually hair that can be removed from the back and transplanted onto the balding area. It is important that there be enough healthy hair to transplant, as well as enough to remain at the donor site in order to maintain a full look. Certain individuals, such as those with weakened immune systems and/or Diabetes, may not be ideal candidates for a hair transplant.

Men or women who are suffering from complete hair loss due to certain illnesses and/or medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, may find that their only hair loss treatment is that of artificial hair. Commonly referred to as a 'wig,' this type of hair is created to look natural and is carefully selected so that each patient feels that there appearance is not dramatically altered by the change.

This article is intended to be used for informational purposes only. It is not to be used in place of, or in conjunction with, professional medical advice or a dermatologist's recommendation. Prior to beginning any hair loss treatment program, individuals must consult a physician for proper diagnosis and/or treatment.

Vitamin for Hair Loss

Hair loss is a very common problem encountered by most people today. There are several reasons for hair loss: lack of proper nutrition in the diet, stress, vitamin deficiency, menstrual problems in women, external weather conditions, emotional disturbances, prolonged or severe illness and others. Hair loss not only causes a change in the external appearance of the person but also causes internal disturbances like embarrassment, decrease in self-confidence, and even depression. On the other hand, it may indicate a major disease in the body that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Hair loss generally indicates a deficiency in vitamin C, vitamin B1, iron and lysine. These four nutrients are generally taken in by the body from the food we consume. However, sometimes, the body the may lose the ability to absorb necessary nutrients from the food. In such cases, additional supplements of these nutrients should be provided to the body in the form of tablets or syrups till the balance in the body is restored.

Some types of hair loss are experienced by men only. These cause baldness in men at a very young age. The main reason for this is the production of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a compound that is present in significant quantities in men only. There are many products in the market now that aim at blocking or slowing the production of DHT in the body. These products contain Palmetto, which is found to be effective in combating the production of DHT.

NDF or Nutrient Deficient Follicles is another major reason for hair loss. This can also be rectified by the intake of necessary vitamins that contribute to healthy hair. There are hundreds of products in the market today that promise to prevent hair loss with the help of hair vitamins. These products are generally prescribed by hair care experts though they can also be purchased over the counter. There are also several websites on the Internet that provide information relating to hair vitamin products for hair loss. However, the best source of hair vitamins for fighting hair loss is a well-balanced healthy diet that is rich in nutrients.
