When I first started noticing my hair loss I immediately started searching the Internet for natural treatments that would help me keep my hair. I found information on Saw Palmetto pretty quickly and I noticed later on that there were a lot of people who were recommending it as a natural hair loss treatment. I didn't necessarily believe that Saw Palmetto worked for hair loss just by reading comments on the Internet but I never would have expected to hear some of the negative side effects that some people told me about.
I've read so many reports and books on Saw Palmetto that have talked about how safe it is and how it works for hair loss and because it was so safe I thought it wouldn't hurt me to try it. Most of the information I got praising Saw Palmetto came from websites but I heard a very different story on newsgroups and on bulletin boards where people are free to give unbiased opinions and information. I've heard everything except "Saw Palmetto works". I never heard that. I can't help but wonder how much Saw Palmetto's hair loss fame has to do with Proscar. Proscar is good for blocking dht and it works for Hair Loss so since Saw Palmetto is good for blocking dht it must also be good for hair loss. Right? Maybe. Maybe not.
The most popular side effect of Saw Palmetto was a decreased libido but I also heard some pretty weird stuff like testicle aches and even blurry vision which really scared me. Now why didn't I hear about this stuff before? It could just be that these people are a very small portion of Saw Palmetto users with negative side effects but It was a little shocking to hear that so many of these people had the very same side effects.
Now I won't rule out a conspiracy theory. It is possible that a major pharmaceutical company could be behind the bad press but I doubt it because that isn't the way they operate. In most cases they fund biased experiments debunking the benefits of a drug but they don't go to forums a spew negative information. That is why I believe that Saw Palmetto might not be the hair loss wonder that it is being.
Now of course these people who took Saw Palmetto and had side effects were most likely young healthy individuals who didn't have prostate problems at all. It is possible that Saw Palmetto actually does work for older men who have prostate trouble that might be causing hair loss. The problem is most likely that younger adult men just shouldn't be taking Saw Palmetto even though it is marketed to them. I wouldn't call it a scam hair loss treatment but the information I received was a little bit disturbing.

Cause of Hair Loss -- Which One Do You Suffer From?
Genetic and hormones are the main culprits of hair loss. One leading form of hereditary hair loss in men and women is Androgenetic Alopecia (otherwise known as pattern baldness), which is responsible for 95% of hair loss. Androgenetic Alopecia is characterized by receding hairline and thinning from the crown of the head in the shape of a horseshoe.
With Androgenetic Alopecia hair loss is caused by an increase in testosterone, which leads to too much dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone. DHT can cause the blood supply that feeds the hair to become damaged, and it can eventually thin the hair follicle, causing hair to grow out thinner and shorter, until the follicle withers away. Furthermore, the body's immune system senses the follicle is dying, and as part of its defense system tries further to shut it down and get rid of it.
Other temporary hair loss causes include lack of nutrition to the hair, lack of circulation to the hair root, scalp infection, or medical treatments/ conditions. Furthermore, product buildup on the hair root, and deep dirt on the hair root, when mixed with sebum, oxidizes into a thick hardened substance on the scalp, which then clogs the entrance of the hair follicle and blocks nutrient absorption by the follicle. The new strand of hair has to fight through the clogged follicle, resulting in a thinner hair strand and smaller bulb at the root of the strand each time the old one falls out. The end result is a hair follicle so damaged from bacteria, sebum and DHT production that the follicle dies.
Women's hair loss tends to be caused by product and dirt buildup on the root, lack of circulation and nutrition, irregular hormone levels and stress. After menopause women become more vulnerable to DHT hormones when their declining estrogen level is not enough to counteract testosterone and DHT, contributing to hair loss. For men the number one cause of hair loss is DHT. Other factors may include lack of nutrition to the hair or sebum on the hair root.

If you are a woman and have suddenly begun to lose hair for no apparent reason, it is important to make time to consider what might be causing the problem. We assume that hereditary hair loss is related only to males. But, knowing the hair history of the women in your family might give you some clues as to why you have begun losing hair. Maybe the hair loss itself is not inherited, but perhaps some of the reasons behind it could be.
Other lesser causes include immune system disorder which leads to Alopecia Areata. This condition causes patches of hair loss on the head and sometimes over the body. Another condition is a stress or trauma-induced hair loss called Telogen Effluvium where hair growth slows, or hair thins or sheds over a period of time. Fortunately this shedding is natural, such as after childbirth, and is temporary and reversible.
Did the women in your family experience similar monthly menstrual problems or begin menopause at about the same time? If so, did they have any hair loss during those times? Sometimes, hair loss in women can be attributed to a hormonal imbalance. If you suspect this is the cause, talk about it with your family doctor. He or she can help determine if your suspicions are correct and can prescribe hormonal therapy to help diminish the symptoms. Or, if you are presently taking a hormone replacement therapy or a method of birth control, perhaps your doctor will suggest changing it to see if the medication has been the culprit behind your hair loss.
Allergic reactions might be the source of hair loss in women. Have you changed shampoos or conditioners? Are you using new styling gel or pomade in your hair every day? If so, revert back to the products you were using before making the change. If you notice your loss of hair improving, maybe it was caused by the products or an ingredient in one of them. If you changed your entire hair care regimen and omitting it seemed to improve your loss of hair, you can use the trial and error method to help you determine if only one of the products was responsible for your hair loss. Use the shampoo for a few days. If there are no harsh affects, add the conditioner. If there is still no hair loss, add a styling product. This system can help you week out the particular culprit or will prove that it is the combination of all the products that is responsible for your hair loss.
What about styling utensils? Have you been using a straightener or curling iron forever? Is the hair loss you are experiencing from the roots or are the ends just breaking off? If it is a case of ends breaking off, try omitting heat from your hair care routine for a couple of weeks. If that helps, you have found your problem!
Last, but certainly not least, to consider is stress. Mental stress does horrible things to our bodies. It gives us headaches, chest pains, acne, and yes - even hair loss. If you suspect stress is the problem behind your hair loss, find ways to simplify your life and lighten your load. Often, it's not that simple. Talk to your family doctor for advice. Try massage therapy, yoga or an exercise class to see if that helps you release your stress. Once you get your stress level under control, your hair will being growing back.

Female Hair Loss Caused by Pharmaceuticals and Treatments
Hair loss is devastating no matter what the reason, but when one's medication is the culprit - it may be even more difficult to understand. This is often a real concern for anyone who is diagnosed with cancer, as chemotherapy and radiation treatments are the most common cause of this type of hair loss. However, this type of hair loss also affects patients with thyroid disease and young girls who are taking birth control.
Though hair loss cased by medicine can affect anyone with a serious illness, it is more prevalent in women and children. The reasons for this are that female breast cancer and Leukemia are the two most common types of cancer and both are treated with the use of chemotherapy and radiation. Women are at the greatest risk because they are also more susceptible to thyroid disease. In addition, a woman may lose her hair from a strong form of birth control. As you can see, women have a higher risk of receiving one of the many harsh medicines that cause hair loss.
Among the medicines known to cause hair loss, chemotherapy is probably the best known. This treatment is used to fight the late stages of cancer and can cause a drop in red blood cells, hair loss, and a weakened immune system. This type of medicine is often used in the treatment of Leukemia and breast cancer, the two most common forms of cancer.
Radiation treatments and radio active medicines are the next most common medicines known to cause hair loss. These treatments are used in cancer and thyroid patients and target a certain area of the body with a large amount of radiation (meant to kill harmful cells). Due to the extreme amount of radiation, hair loss is almost inevitable when using these types of treatments. If you or someone you know isolates themselves from society because of their hair loss, contact a counsellor and become part of a support group.
While losing one's hair due to the medicine they are on may be devastating, it is important to remember that this is only a temporary stage of your life. Hair has been known to begin growing back as early as a few weeks after the treatment has ended. With this knowledge many patients have braved the harsh medications, successfully saved their lives, and re-grown their hair. With everything 'back to normal,' these patients can go back to their normal lives once again.

Treating Hair Loss is Less Painful with Online Pharmacies
Young people take their hair for granted. They like to shave their heads, grow it into dreadlocks, bleach it, dye it, tie it into knots, and braid it. Most of them never think about the possibility of one day not having hair on their head to express their individuality. But for a person who is an adult and experiencing the trauma of hair loss, they think about their hair all the time.
The shower drain is the coroner for dead hair. It takes your precious locks to their final resting place. A simple process like taking a shower can be quite a traumatic event for a person who is experiencing problems with thinning hair. There is nothing more painful than watching their hair float down the shower drain. They cannot help but wonder every time a hair goes down whether or not there will be a new one growing back in it's place, or if the follicle that produced that hair will produce no more.
Most causes of baldness are hereditary. Androgenetic alopecia is the medical term for this type of hair loss which affects millions of men and women worldwide. The hair follicles progressively get smaller which causes a shortening of the growth cycle. As the hair growth cycle gets shorter it causes the hair to become thinner and shorter over time until there is eventually no growth at all.
In the old days people with hair loss problems had no treatments available. They had several choices to deal with this condition, and none of them were good ones. Comb the hair on the side over the top, shave your head, or wear a hat all the time to conceal the problem. Fortunately, things are different today. Advances in medical science have produced several effective products to help people who are going bald. But time is of the essence when it comes to hereditary hair loss. The sooner a person seeks help for this condition the better their chances are of re-growing hair or saving the hair they have left.
Men do not like to talk about hair loss. It is a sensitive topic that is avoided in conversations for the very reason that it makes them feel awkward and vulnerable. They would much rather deal with that issue in private. A quick consultation with a doctor to discuss the available treatments, and the rest of their problem will be handled on their own. After they discuss their options with the doctor, they usually end up with a trip to the local pharmacy to pick up drugs like Propecia, Rogaine, Minoxidil, etc... This is when the situation can get embarrassing.
When a man goes to the local pharmacy to pick up his products for the treatment of hair loss he is bringing his problem out into the public. There may be a good looking woman working behind the register and the last thing he wants to do is throw down a box of Minoxidil with a bottle full of Propecia pills. This would be a declaration of his thinning hair problem, and that is something he wants very few people to know about. There is also the chance that he might see someone he knows while standing in line. It could be Mrs. Krakowski the nosy neighbor, Bobby Tremmelfork the loudmouth mischievous kid who lives next door, or the worst possible person of all; an old girlfriend or ex-wife.
These types of people will inevitably glance down at his products on the counter as they are waiting in line, and when this happens his problem with thinning hair is suddenly exposed to all the wrong people, and inevitably to the world (as he knows it). This kind of painful embarrassment can be quite unbearable for a man who is going bald, but it can be avoided entirely by foregoing the trip to the local pharmacy and opting to order the hair loss products from an online pharmacy.
Online pharmacies are safe, convenient and private. The Federal government has issued strict laws and guidelines regarding this industry and this has eliminated most of the risk from ordering prescription and over the counter drugs online. Also, the major search engine companies like Google and Yahoo now require anyone who advertises an online pharmacy using their services to provide proof of a valid U. S. pharmacy license. While all this means that it is quite safe to do your pharmacy shopping online, it also means that it is a lot less embarrassing to buy your prescription drugs.
No more trips to the local pharmacy where you run the risk of exposing your sensitive medical condition to the world. You can now order your prescription and over the counter drugs safely and securely (any reputable online pharmacy has an SSL certificate) and have them delivered overnight right to your door in a plain-wrapped box. Even the good-looking FEDEX delivery woman will have no idea that the reason you answer the door every time wearing a baseball cap is because you have been suffering with the misery of androgenetic alopecia (hereditary baldness). And if Mrs.
Krakowski your nosy neighbor looks through her window with binoculars to try and see the name on the packages your FEDEX person keeps delivering to your hose, her devious plan will be thwarted. Or if Bobby Tremmelfork happens to dig through your trash can to find a box that will serve as a home for the pet centipede he caught in his back yard, he and his family will not discover that you have been having products to treat thinning hair delivered to your house.
If you order your products to treat sensitive conditions at an online pharmacy your secret will remain safe. You will be able to attend all neighborhood gatherings in the future with the confidence that comes with knowing that nobody is aware of the emotional pain you were recently going through when you were losing your hair. Oh...and if you happen to run into an old girlfriend or ex-wife out in public some where, one thing is for sure; it will not be at your local pharmacy at a time when you are ordering prescription drugs to help with your thinning hair problem.

Male hair loss is often caused by an aggressive hormone known as DHT. This type of hair loss is hormonal and unfortunately not temporary. For males this type of hair loss can be devastating, however there are treatments available. DHT is an aggressive form of the male hormone testosterone. DHT performs many critical jobs in a male's body. Despite the positive roles DHT performs, it can be problematic. For example, when the prostate gland malfunctions and forms too much DHT, the hormone can cause serious problems, such as aggression and hair loss.
How does DHT actually cause hair loss? In excessive amounts, DHT has been known to attack (for unknown reasons) a man's hair follicles. This causes the hair follicle to shrink and weakens existing hair as a result. The hair will inevitably fall out and new hair will not grow in its place (because the attacked hair follicle is now too small). This can very quickly lead to large bald patches.
Most medical problems that have been diagnosed as 'hormonal problems' have been easily treated by increasing the amount of a certain hormone in the body. However, many tests have been done with this type of cure for DHT related hair loss. Unfortunately, all of these tests have failed. While there isn't exactly a 'cure,' this doesn't mean that treatment is not available. It most definitely is.
Hence, the name hair replacement transplant. Hair transplant works when there is enough donor hairs. Victims of female/male pattern balding are the best candidates for hair transplant. If you still have hair growing anywhere around the scalp flaps hair transplantation can be easy and effective. Scalp reduction surgery is a popular balding solution to cure the baldness caused by flaking scalps. It can be done in conjunction with hair transplants and involves surgically removing of a portion of the balding area, which causes the bald spot to be smaller.
Many shampoos and solutions are available for DHT hair loss. These work by slightly re-opening shrunken follicles This type of treatment has been successful in slowing hair loss significantly. Indeed many of these products have claimed to stop hair loss all together. Fact or fiction? You be the judge. If all else fails, you may be left pondering alternative forms of hair restoration.
Hair replacement surgery is possibly the closest we have come to 'curing' baldness. By moving one's own hair from good follicles to bad follicles, this treatment is known to have very 'natural looking results.' For many men, a full head of hair is well worth the cost of such an expensive procedure.
In order to determine whether or not you would be a good candidate for hair replacement or restoration, consult with several different surgeons. Never choose a surgeon from the yellow pages or the internet. Always take a referral from a friend or colleague that has used similar (if not the same) services from whoever they are recommending.

Hair is a striking feature of human body. Hair loss, especially by female/male pattern baldness is matter of great concern. Pattern baldness is particularly is very troubling condition. In this type of baldness the hair is regularly lost at both the temples and at top of the skull. At last the person is left with a horseshoe pattern in the head. Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is the chief devil that causes hair loss. With age one suffers from this disorder by acquiring the genetic predisposition and presence of male hormones. Contrary to the common perception, hereditary baldness is not a must in each generation.
However, if one's father is completely bald and one loses hair at an early stage, then he is said to be in male pattern baldness due to alopecia and 95% of complete baldness occurs by alopecia. Excess amount of male hormone also causes hair loss. Besides, stress, improper nutrition and pollution together accelerate the baldness. One under stress will loss hair at double the speed of a normal human. Taking dietary supplement and/or external application of cosmetics is fruitless to stop baldness. Fortunately, there are several baldness solutions, the most popular ones being hair transplantation surgery, scalp reduction surgery and scalp flap surgery. There is no such thing as true hair transplant. Surgeons replace the bald area from some other hair-healthy area of the head.
This means that there are fewer areas to graft to the head during a hair transplant. Scalp flap is an invasive procedure that involves surgically removing a portion of healthy scalp and hair from the back or sides of the head and transplanting it on the bald areas. This creates a new hairline for the males who suffer from male pattern baldness. Scalp flaps are usually performed on patients who have complete balding in the front area of the scalp. Those candidates whose hair is just beginning to thin or is thinning in patches in random areas spanning the head may want to choose a different type of treatment.
