Understanding and Treating Hair Loss Caused By Alopecia

Alopecia areata is one of the more common reasons for hair loss today, even though it is still not yet fully understood by medical science. There are three types of alopecia. The first, alopecia areata, is a condition where your hair falls out in patches from all over your body. The next, alopecia totalis, causes the scalp to shed all hair in a very short time span. Finally, alopecia universalis, causes hair loss from the head, face, and body simultaneously.

For those unfortunates who suffer from severe hair loss caused by alopecia, surgical replacement of hair could be a more effective remedy to replace the hair that has been lost.

Alopecia is diagnosed using a series of blood tests that check the hormone levels in the blood. Once a diagnosis is made the correct form of treatment can then be determined. One aspect that has been observed is that medical treatment is effective only with mild alopecia.

Treatment for Alopecia Areata

If your hair loss is caused by alopecia areata it can be treated successfully if the condition is diagnosed in the early stages. The treatment for hair loss caused by alopecia involves the use of one, or a combination, of the following steps. First, minoxidil is applied, typically once a day, along with topical applications of the Chinese herb, he shou wu, and maybe 100 percent aloe vera gel as well. Your doctor may also suggest cortisone injections into the scalp. Occasionally creams and lotions can be used instead, but these will always have a less impact on the ailment when compared to the injection.

These treatment(s) for hair loss caused by alopecia can sometimes be very effective, or they could be extremely disappointing. The effectiveness is usually dependent on how advanced the disease is at the time of diagnosis, the underlying causes and complications, and the overall health status of the person involved. For example, if the patient is a female who is going through a pre- or post-menopausal phase, then the treatment should also include the regulation of the hormone level in the blood of the patient. If the person is diabetic, then the hair loss will be better controlled when the diabetes has first been brought under control.

Alternatives Available

However, this process is both painstaking and very expensive. It should be taken only as a last option. There are also several herbal remedies that have been proven to be highly beneficial. However, since the FDA does not endorse the herbal products, it is easy to misrepresent the facts in their promotion, and you should therefore be wary of fraudulent products.

Female Hair Loss Treatments and Why Hair Loss Is Different On Venus

Female hair loss treatments often differ to men's, for a number of reasons. The main prescription hair loss treatment for men, the drug propecia, is generally not as effective in women, although an Italian study seemed to show some promise with it. The study followed the experience of 37 women who were given 2.5 mg of propecia a day, as well as the contraceptive pill. As propecia can cause deformities in the development of a male fetus' sex organs, propecia cannot be given to women who have a chance of conceiving, or who are pregnant.

Results were measured by taking photos of the women's heads, and using a technique called computerized light videodermoscopy to measure the density of hairs. Women tend to have thinning hair when they suffer hair loss, and don't often go completely bald. After 12 months of treatment, 23 women (62%) had improvements in their hair thickness. Those women who had most hair loss down the middle of the top of the head, showed the most improvement. Only one woman was found to have worse hair loss.

But more studies on propecia as a female hair loss treatment need to be conducted before it is given the green light as a treatment option. Not only is there the issue of fetal damage, making it a risky drug for women, but this study is not conclusive as evidence that it will actually work for all, or most, women.

Another reason female hair loss treatments differ to men's is that the causes of female hair loss often vary. Hair loss in women is often associated with hormonal changes like menopause, discontinuing birth control pills, and after pregnancy. There is a 3 month delay before signs of hair loss will appear, so if you're noticing hair loss now, it was probably triggered 3 months ago. And it can take another 3 months before new growth starts to show.

Another factor in female hair loss is excessive dieting or sudden weight loss. Hair requires nutrients to grow just as any other part of the body does, What we eat can not only affect how shiny and healthy our hair appears, but also hair loss. Whilst men can suffer hair loss from similar weight loss, women tend to be more involved with extreme diets than men.

Female hair loss can also be an indicator of a medical condition, such as an underactive thyroid gland, diabetes, anemia, and PCOS. It's a good idea to get these possible issued ruled out by a doctor first. If they are at the root of the hair loss problem, no amount of hair loss medications or topical treatments or hair vitamins is going to stop hair loss until that is treated.

Hair loss that is caused by physical or emotional stress generally resolves itself when the stressor is dealt with, without any female hair loss treatment. But because of the hair's growth cycles, it can take 6 months before any improvement is noticed.

What Can You Do to Halt Hair Loss?

Some hair loss is perfectly normal. Everyone, male and female, naturally loses 50 to 100 hairs a day. However, if you appear to be losing too much hair, or you notice the appearance thinning or bald spots, there are several things you can do to put a stop to this hair loss.

Generally, women are given topical treatments like minoxidil to encourage hair growth. Minoxidil has drawbacks in that it has to be applied to the scalp twice a day, and some women are allergic to it. Unfortunately, scientists have not come up with a hair loss medication that will definitely work for women.

Adopt a Healthy Diet

Your hair is sensitive to your diet. Very low calorie diets and eating disorders can be the cause of hair loss. Hair is made up of protein, so it naturally follows that you could experience hair loss if you don’t ensure that your diet contains sufficient protein. Not getting enough protein is not necessarily a problem in developed countries, but increasing your protein intake further can still help to put an end to hair loss. Eating fish is especially beneficial, owing to the abundance of oils in fish. Make sure you are getting enough B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid and biotin. Normally you will ingest these nutrients if you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. 5 a day is the popular theme.

Shampooing

Ensuring that your hair and scalp stay clean can help to stop hair loss. It’s recommended that your hair is washed at least every other day. While you’re shampooing, be sure to also massage the scalp and hairline well. This will increase circulation to your hair follicles. Using nizoral shampoo may also help put a stop to hair loss.

Conditioners

Conditioning and moisturizing your hair is also very important. Dry brittle hair not only falls out, but also breaks off. Protein conditioners — especially those with hydrolyzed human hair keratin proteins — will give the best results. Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes before rinsing.

Protect From UV Radiation

Just like your skin, your hair can also get sunburned. If your hair is also really thin, your scalp mayn get sunburned also. You should protect your exposed scalp from UV radiation by using a good sunscreen. Protect the hair itself by covering it or by using a leave-in conditioner with sun block.

Natural Remedies

Some people have found that taking silica capsules also helps stop hair loss. Ginko biloba may help because it is designed to improve the circulation to the scalp. Yet another common natural remedy is to rinse your hair in a mix of cider vinegar and sage tea once or twice a week.

Minoxidil (Rogaine®)

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter medication that stops hair loss. It is FDA approved and can be used by both men and women. You apply minoxidil direct to your scalp. However, it does take a few weeks before you will any improvement can be seen. Minoxidil helps a lot of people, but you have to keep on using it. As soon as you stop using it you will start losing your hair again.

Prescriptions

There are prescription medications, available from your doctor, designed specifically to stop hair loss. Propecia is the main one. Avodart is also used, but it is not FDA approved for the treatment of hair loss. Your hair loss may be caused by hormonal disturbances, or other causes, and taking medications designed to treat those problems should also help to stop your hair loss. There are quite a few things you can do for yourself to stop hair loss. If these don’t work, you should always check with your doctor to see if there is an underlying cause for your hair loss. You can discuss further treatment options with her.

Do You Know What To Do When You Experience Sudden Hair Loss?

There are few things more disturbing than finding out that your hair is falling out all of a sudden. It can scare the best of us when we see the comb full of hair, and the sight of the lost hair can make you desperate to seek out measures to combat it. On impulse, the first step that most people take when confronted with this sudden hair loss is to change their shampoo or conditioner. Although this can, on occasion, be the cause of the hair loss, most times the cause is much more deeply rooted.

Possible Causes

Sudden hair loss, more often than not, is the result of the side effects of either using medicines or undergoing psychological stress. Another reason for sudden hair loss could be hormonal imbalances. Alternatively, it could be the symptom of an underlying serious disease such as leukemia, diabetes or lupus.

The best way to check your sudden hair loss is to determine the root cause of the hair loss. Once the reason is identified then the correct treatment becomes a lot easier to determine. However, the diagnosis to find out the cause of hair loss can take a while. Your doctor is the best person to help you with solving this problem. There are several tests that will need to be carried out in order to seek out the real underlying cause for your sudden hair loss.

Treatment for Sudden Hair Loss

The diagnosis will be clear when the results of tests are known. The first thing the doctor will have to rule out is any scalp infection. The next major cause for this type of hair loss is experiencing sudden stress or psychological trauma. The treatment for hair loss should be carried out utilising great patience and care. Why? Because the regeneration of hair is a slow process and it can take quite a long time before you will see the results. Instead of letting the treatment take its course, impatient people may panic. This can result in their using any number of dubious products that are advertised as beneficial in the media.

However, these products can further aggravate the situation and promote hair loss instead of curing it. This is why when you are undergoing hair loss treatment it is essential to not only receive expert attention, but that you also have sufficient patience to let the treatment take its course. I must stress once again however, that unless you identify the root cause for your sudden hair loss, whatever treatment you undergo will not really be of any help.

Natural Hair Loss Treatments

Alopecia, or hair loss, is a condition that afflicts people of both sexes all around the world. It occurs naturally caused by hereditary genes or hormonal changes. However, hair loss can also be caused by severe infection, medications such as chemotherapy, stress, and dietary problems. Those who suffer from hair loss typically use drugs such as Minoxidil and Finasteride to stop or control the thinning hair. Others also resort to a more drastic solution which is hair transplant, involving the transfer of healthy hair follicles into balding areas and resulting to natural looking hair.

But is there a way to regain your lost hair glory without resorting to surgery or heavy medication? The short answer is yes. There are natural hair loss treatments you can try to help curb a receding hair line or thinning tresses. Alternative treatments you can try include herbal medications. Herbs such as rosemary and aloe vera have been used for ages to stimulate hair growth. Capsicum, a type of pepper, and Lemongrass are also used to help regrow hair and keep it healthy.

Since hair loss is most commonly caused by the hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT, it makes sense to block this particular hormone through medication. There are herbs that can block the balding effects of DHT. Dong Quai, a traditional Chinese herb, helps stop DHT. Likewise, saw palmetto which is a small type of palm, also inhibits the effects of DHT and helps stimulate the growth of healthier hair.

These are just some of the many natural hair loss treatments you can try to help stop hair loss and regain a full crop of healthy hair. For those who are just starting to see the symptoms of hair loss, keeping the hair healthy by natural means is an effective way to slow down and even stop the effects of alopecia.

Preventing And Disguising Hair Loss

In a perfect world, only aged, retired men need to worry about losing their hair. But the world is not perfect and so is our hair. Recent studies show that teens of both genders are as likely to develop hair loss as older men. Testosterone is the culprit and the leading cause of hair loss. Since teens' bodies are not yet completely differentiated from each other (male or female), each have testosterone in significant amounts. Add to that the stress of homework, dating, and the general quality of teenage life, and teens are more likely to tear their hair out.

Since teens are not capable of paying for expensive hair treatments or hair implants, their only options are prevention and disguise. It is easy to prevent hair loss with proper hair care and treatment. It is natural to shed hair, but excessive shedding needs medical attention. Consult a doctor in cases of extreme hair fall in your teen. Excessive hair fall includes shedding locks of hair at times and hair fall with no apparent trigger. It might be a deficiency in vitamins or minerals which can be easily addressed by supplements or a symptom of an illness.

There are however steps that can be taken to reduce the risks of hair loss:

Always use a mild shampoo. Avoid coloring your hair, his dries hair to the point of being breaking. Avoid perming your hair, the solutions that are used in perming hair can actually burn the scalp; causing scarring that can prevent the new growth of hair. If you do color or treat your hair get some good hair loss products that will help rebuild the hair and moisten it.

In any case, seek medical attention before attempting to do anything with your teen's hair. If the cause of hair fall is nutrient deficiency, ensure that your teen takes the prescribed supplements religiously to prevent further hair fall. If it is a symptom of a disease, take your teen to a hairdresser. Ask the hairdresser to cut your teen's hair in a style that hides the thinning portion. A shorter 'do also reduces the trauma of seeing longer locks fall off. Get your teen a mild cleanser or even baby shampoo during hair fall phase. This prevents irritations to the exposed scalp and hair breakage.

Hair loss cannot be reversed overnight. While waiting for the effects of the medication or during the treatment, you can help your teen with hair disguises. If your teen decides he wants to use a wig, bring a lock of hair to the wig shop where they can make a wig similar to your teen's hair type. Hats are good options to hide thinning hair. The basic ball cap is casual and fit for everyday wear. Hats are made with different materials. Just pick one that lets the scalp skin breathe out but does not let sun and heat penetrate. Scarves, turbans, and shawls are great and fashionable options for your teen. It is tragic to suffer from hair loss during the stage when appearance matter most. Don't let hair loss weigh your teen down. Provide support and treat the condition positively to influence your teen facing this challenge.
