What's In Your Shampoo? Hair Health, And Hair Loss Prevention Using Natural Products

We do our shopping and purchase our hair care products and assume we are doing the right things for hair health. Through promotion and marketing we are led to believe that some of the products available today are things we just can't do without. But is that really true?

These petrochemicals are absorbed through the skin, then down through the organs and tissues.

To find the answer you must first look at the structure of hair. Below the skin is the hair follicle, the sebaceous gland and blood vessels. The hair itself is made up of protein. When you brush your hair it causes the sebaceous gland to produce sebum. This oily substance coats and protects the hair from the elements. It also stimulates the blood vessels to provide the nourishment your hair needs.

Brushing your hair and or massaging the scalp are beneficial to hair health. With commercial products, most shampoos and conditioners contain harsh chemicals and synthetic products. In shampoos, that means it can over clean your hair and strip it of its precious oils. Now you need to condition it to replace the oils. It can harm the scalp and hair follicles. It is the same with laundry detergents. They are loaded with fillers and less actual soap so that they can sell you more detergent. It's a money making strategy that has worked so they will continue to do so.

Now if you are like most people, you've read the labels but don't have a clue as to what the ingredients really are and what their function is. Here it is in layman's terms:

1) Distereate and propylene glycol or glycol are petroleum based (crude oil). They are very cheap which is why they are widely used in the cosmetic industry.

2) Isopropyl alcohol is another very cheap solvent.

3) Propylparaben or Methylparen are preservatives that are synthetic. The human body typically does not understand synthetic, it understands organic.

4) Cetearyl alcohol is an emulsifier and it can be natural or synthetic. Synthetic is often used because it's cheaper and easier to produce.

Many believe that long term exposure to these toxins can cause permanent damage anywhere in the body, and yet, governments have sided with big industry to not require them to disclose what these products contain or what they really are. Instead we have big fancy names you can hardly pronounce let alone understand.

The solution? It's not as hard as you think. It's as close as you health food store or even your own fridge. Here are some tips:

1) Buy a natural liquid soap from the health food store. Also purchase some essential oils such as lavender (for all hair types), rosemary, clary sage, cedar wood, birch and peppermint (for hair loss) bergamot, rosewood, eucalyptus etc. Also purchase natural oils such as olive, jojoba, or avocado. Here's what to do; in a clean spray bottle, pour in about ½ a cup of distilled or spring water. Add 1 cup of liquid soap. Then take 2 tsp of your vegetable oil and add 10 to 20 drops of your chosen essential oils. It can be just one or several combined oils. Shake gently. There you have it. Simple as that! (Essential oils always need to be in a vegetable oil base because of its concentration). You should not need a cream rinse after that because oils will be replaced.

2) If you need deep conditioning, try saturating your hair in mayonnaise or warmed olive oil. Wrap tightly and cover with a shower cap and let rest on the hair for approximately 20 minutes, then rinse out. You can also take 2 egg yolks and whisk them until frothy, then add some warm water. Pour over hair and leave on for 2 minutes then rinse well.

3) It's a good idea to do a final rinse on your hair with something acidic such as cider vinegar, lemon juice, beer or even milk. Add any of these ingredients with some water to rinse your hair with to restore the alkaline/acid balance of your hair and scalp, and take off any residue you may have left on your hair.

There are many good natural recipes for healthy hair but these are a few things to get you started in the right direction. Experiment with different essential and vegetable oils to find what you like best. Natural, your body understands, so here's to a good hair day!

Coping With Male Hair Loss

Male hair loss is truly not an uncommon thing. An estimated 75 percent of all men experience hair loss in one form or another, mostly through genetic alopecia. Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, and that's right - there's a gene for it. Even women may carry the gene, and suffer from genetic alopecia, but noticeably, these women are very few. Hair loss among both males and females are caused by the presence of androgens, or male hormones, which we are all born with. Understandably, male hair loss is more common because males have more androgens in their system.

Testosterone is an androgen, and with age it converts into dihyrotestosterone (DHT) in males. DHTs are much stronger androgens than testosterone, and they accelerate genetic conditions like hair loss much faster. Bald or balding men have been found to contain a lot more DHTs in their system than normal men; however, they exhibit no significant advantage in regular testosterone count. There are different ways to remedy this condition... although as a whole, alopecia does not stop once it begins. While complete baldness is uncommon, hair will continue to fall out as a man with the alopecia condition continues to grow older. This is why it is necessary to take anti-hair loss medicine - such as Propecia and Rogaine, the more well-known brand names - regularly for the rest of one's life.

This awkwardness is now easily avoidable with new grafting techniques. Head gear, like caps, hats, and bandanas - and hairpieces like toupees and wigs, have also always been an option. These are considered more economical - although they could be rather uncomfortable and hard to work with in the long run. It's up to you to decide which hair loss treatment would work out best. So should you or anyone you know experience hair loss - it's important to bear in mind that it's not the end of the world. Coping with male hair loss doesn't mean you have to take it sitting down!

Causes And Treatment For Hair Loss

On average, people lose about 10% of their hair during a resting phase. Then after about three months, resting hair falls out and new hair begins to grow. The phase of new growing hair typically lasts anywhere from two to six years with hair growing about one-half to one-inch per month. The interesting thing is that as much as 90% of hair on your head is growing at any given time. Shedding hair is a normal process. In fact, on a normal day, you would lose about 100 hairs although more if you were actually going through significant hair loss. Now, hair loss is usually associated with men but women can also go through hair loss. The cause of excessive hair loss could be a number of things. For starters, if you have undergone major surgery or illness, you might lose more hair for the following three months than you normally do because of stress.

This will slow the process of alopecia dramatically, and even promote hair growth. But they will not make the alopecia condition go away on their own. Surgery is also an option. Advancements in medical technology have brought about significant improvements in hair surgery techniques. Microscopic follicular unit grafting is among them. Traditionally, surgeons used multi-bladed scalpels to graft patches of skin onto the pieces of scalp that most suffer from alopecia - but this sometimes produced an awkward look, because the root systems of the scalp have been damaged in the process of grafting.

Another common cause of excessive hair loss is due to hormonal changes within the body. This in itself could be from several things such as having a baby, dealing with an under or overly active thyroid, having estrogen or androgens out of balance, and so on. Then, certain types of drugs can also cause hair loss. In this case, once the medication is stopped, the excessive hair loss usually stops as well. The most common culprits include blood thinners, chemotherapy, excessive vitamin A, antidepressants, gout medication, and birth control pills.

Then, if you have a fungal infection of the scalp, you might also find your hair falling out more than usual. Finally, underlying disease can also be a challenge. For instance, if you are living with something such as diabetes, lupus, or another autoimmune disease, excessive hair loss is common. Remember, by taking the right medication to treat the problem, hair growth generally returns to normal.

Although some types of hair loss are genetic, you can also do a few things to help slow down or stop the process. For starters, avoid wearing your hair in cornrows, ponytails, or hot rollers, which tend to pull and stretch hair to the point of breakage. In addition, if hair follicles should become inflamed, excessive hair loss may occur. In this case, having your hair permed, colored, or treated with hot oil could be damaging. The key here is to only, have a professional work on your hair, using professional and safe products.

If the hair loss is extreme and you have tried everything you know from eating healthy to using good hair care products but nothing is working, you might visit with your doctor. First, he or she will look at what is going on with your body to see if medication, infection, or illness could be the problem. If not, blood work may be performed to look further at a possible cause. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe certain medication such as hormones for an imbalance or antibiotics for an infection. Other than that, you will find a number of excellent products now on the market that can help maintain the current amount of hair and in some cases, help with regrowth.

The growth of hair is governed by hormones that appear after puberty. The male hormone testosterone and female hormone estrogen governs body hair, hair in the armpits, beard, hair on chin etc. Usually when the level of estrogen drops in women signs of hair loss or baldness is seen.

*Eating a diet containing adequate amount of nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats etc.

*Drinking plenty of water.

*In order to compensate the copper deficiency, intake carrot juice, lettuce, capsicum and alfalfa. It is a good remedy for hair loss and prevents hair from graying.

*Massaging scalp with warm almond or olive oil can help to stimulate the blood flow in the scalp. This in turn would strengthen hair follicles and prevent hair from falling.

*Avoid applying hair creams, gels and other chemicals in hair as they make them loose the moisture and make them brittle.

*Remove chlorine properly from hair after swimming.

*Make a hair pack by mixing Indian goose berry with egg. Apply it twice a week on hair to make them thick and glossy.

*Hot air and heat makes your hair dry. Always cover your head before going out in sun.

*Blow drying hair dehydrates the adequate moisture and aggravates hair loss. Try to air dry your hair. Stand under the fan and run your fingers gently within the hair making them dry.

*Do not use a brush on wet hair. Use a wide toothed comb instead.

*Stress is one of the major causes for hair loss. Regular yoga and meditation can relieve your worries thus preventing hair from falling.

Giving you information on various hair loss treatments

There has been a lot of debate on why people lose their hair at various ages without any specific reason. Expert's suggestion that it could be stress related, baldness in the family, poor diet, trauma, sickness and or other related occurrences. There has been links to thyroid problems, poor digestion and even infection that might affect thinning hair. If you had hair when you were young, then why is your hair falling out, while others continues to grow. The key lies within you understanding your own hair loss situation. The human scalp is often covered with 100,000 hairs.

Male pattern baldness is massive in many countries around the world and affects all ages and races. How do we recognize male pattern baldness? The answers lie in receding temples and hairlines! Over time they go back. Some hair follicles shrink and become thinner. Before you know it, often there are minor bald spots on some people's scalp.

It isn't so much the excess zinc that caused the hair loss, merely the out of balance ratio between copper and zinc; zinc sulfate itself was found to be an inhibitor of DHT production (DHT is the chemical which is said to cause hair loss in men). The message here is not to overdose on zinc without taking copper as well. In fact high dosages of both might be beneficial; although, copper really does seem to be the mineral for hair loss. Sesame and flaxseed are believed by Chinese women to be good for the hair and scalp. Sesame has unsurprisingly high amounts of copper and zinc, plus lignans.

Tons of men especially are worried about hair loss and want to know what kind of options do they really have. You need to know the facts and understand what your options really are. There are so many gimmicks that state you can have hair re-growth but we all know that is very hair.

There are really a few ways to breakdown what you really can do to see if there is any hair loss treatment out there for you. One option is alternative medicine like herbs, vitamins, massagers that are supposed to help promote hair growth. A secondary option is over the counter drugs like MINOXIDIL or even a pharmacy drug like PROPECIA. A third common procedure is hair restoration. One other common alternative is hair replacement systems. To really understand what you can do about your thinning condition, it is must get to the root of why you are thinning.

Vitamin D - The Vitamin for Hair Loss

It seems that the vitamin for hair loss is vitamin D. Research on mice shows that vitamin D, namely 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D regulates the expression of genes of the skin. When scientists knocked out those genes, the mice displayed vitamin D deficient symptoms of rickets and hair loss. They had total hair loss at 8 months old with the formation of dermal cysts starting at the age of 3 weeks. This is a strong indication that hair loss in young men could be a result of a lack of vitamin D. It isn't conclusive since scientists deliberately knocked out the genes responsible rather than depriving the mice of vitamin D itself. It also doesn't rule out many other factors which could be involved in the process of hair loss. Is vitamin D the only possible vitamin for hair loss, or are there other nutrients which link to the biological processes of this vitamin? Omega 3 happens to be one of them.

The Essential Fatty Acid link
Maybe it isn't the modern indoor lifestyle which is to blame, but the increasing deficiency of Essential Fatty Acids in our diet, especially Omega 3. It has been shown that the essential fatty acids help eliminate eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, help prevent hair loss by controlling the flow of oils and nourish collagen, the supporting structure beneath the skin. So, what is the link to vitamin D? Believe it or not essential fatty acids aid in the production and excess removal of cholesterol. As well as being necessary for many vital bodily functions, cholesterol is required for the body to manufacture its own vitamin D, which, as I have shown, seems to be the key vitamin for hair loss. If you suffer from a scalp condition, such as flaky scalp or psoriasis as well as hair loss, then this would seem to be the problem. As well as vitamin D and the essential fatty acids, I would recommend a shampoo treatment such as those which contain coal tar. Is it just these two nutrients that we should be concentrating on? Well, there's more.

Iron and L-lysine deficiencies
Serum ferritin provides a good assessment of iron content in the body. For the last 40 years it has been shown that a low level of serrum ferritin has been associated with female hair loss. The same is true for L-lysine, the essential amino acid. In a double-blind study, women with hair loss responded well to both iron and L-lysine therapy.

Copper and zinc deficiencies
According to scientific studies on mice, excess zinc causes hair loss. Also, lack of copper is also known to breakdown proteins, including those in both nails and hair. A different experiment showed that deficiencies in the copper / zinc ratio causes hair cells in mice to die off. Again, copper as copper chloride, although not fully tested, has shown to have positive results for hair loss. Incredibly, new research (June 2006) shows that a copper peptide injected into the skin induced very strong hair follicle growth. This all points to a lack of copper as a real cause of hair loss (and allergies).

Soybean extract and isoflavones
Ingredients in soy, namely the isoflavones, reduced DHT in the blood plasma (DHT is said to be responsible for hair loss). DHT is converted from testosterone by an enzyme called 5a-reductase. Soy extracts were shown to inhibit this enzyme. It should also prevent prostate cancer as prostate cancer is also reported to be associated with an increase in DHT.

Vegetarianism and hair loss - vitamin b12
Vegetarians often lack vitamin B12. In fact, 40% of the American population does according to a study by Tuffs university in 2001. But the study says that it isn't people aren't eating enough meat but that the vitamin isn't being absorbed. Also what is interesting is the fact that young people in their twenties had the same deficiencies as those 65 and older. Lack of vitamin B12 is a known vitamin for hair loss. So how do you increase your absorption of vitamin B12?

The digestive system
If you are not absorbing vitamins and minerals correctly, then the gut is not working properly. Before taking any vitamin for hair loss, or any other nutritional supplement, the gut has to be cleansed. The poor absorption could be due to parasites and bad bacteria working in the gut. Clinical grade acidophilus can fix the bacteria, and herbs or the Sputnik capsule at the Turner Clinic can take care of any parasite infection. Parasite infection is more common than most people realize, especially those with pets.
