Diabetes Articles, Tips and Information

Pets get diabetes too

Just like humans pets can suffer from diabetes mellitus too. By a simple blood test, called fructosamine, thay can be diagnosed, and then under the care of your veterinary surgeon, often treated succesfully.

Fructosamine values are not influenced by acute fluctuations in blood glucose making them more useful than single glucose measurements taken from stressed or anorexic patients, or animals on glucose containing IV fluids.

Fructosamines are stable complexes of carbohydrates and proteins that are produced by an irreversible, nonenzymatic glycosylation of serum proteins. Fructosamine (glycated serum protein) measurements are useful in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes mellitus in both cats and dogs. The test is highly sensitive and can be used to distinguish non-diabetic transiently hyperglycaemic cats from diabetics with chronic hyperglycaemia.

A single measurement of fructosamine indicates the average glucose concentration over the previous 1-3 weeks and its assay can therefore be used to assist in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus as well as monitoring the effectiveness of insulin therapy in diabetic patients.

In some cases however they can be used in conjunction with serial glucose curves to assess the short and long term response to insulin administration.

Top 10 Do's For Women With type II Diabetes

It has been observed that women who are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. The exact cause of this type of diabetes is unclear, but it does appear to be associated with weight gain. In fact, a sedentary lifestyle, along with poor dietary habits, popular in the culture today, is among the explanations for the dramatic increase in the numbers of women suffering with Type 2 diabetes.

The connection between diet and diabetes is that, if you eat a high-fat, high calorie diet, which a lot of us do today, you put yourself at risk for weight gain, and if you are more than 120% of your desirable body weight, in simple terms, more than 20 pounds over what you should weigh, you become more insulin resistant, you use your own insulin at less capacity than you should, and you will have higher blood sugars, which will lead to diabetes. Diabetes is on the rise, and women with diabetes have an elevated risk of heart disease and stroke.

The good news is that there are steps they can take to reduce their risk of diabetes complications. From the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), here are Top 10 do's to help women with diabetes live longer, healthier lives. Do review your treatment plan with your doctor or health care provider at least once a year. Make changes if your plan is not working well.

Do work with a dietitian. Create a meal plan that gives you healthy choices and is just right for you. A dietician will guide you on how to exercise portion control & make healthy food choices. Do have a snack when you're hungry. Choose something healthy (something that's low in carbohydrates) that fits into your overall meal plan. All the starchy foods like rice and potatoes and breads and cereals get broken down into sugar in the body. If you eat them in excess, your blood sugar is going to go up, so you need to use some portion control. The real key, is portion control.

Take care of your feet. Wear comfortable shoes that have a smooth lining, fit well and protect your them. Do have your feet, eyes and kidneys checked at least once a year. Regular check-ups help to find problems early, when they can be treated and managed well. Also, do see your dentist twice a year. Make sure he or she knows you have diabetes.

Do your housework and get more than a clean house. Turn up the music, get some exercise and burn away those calories. Exercise is a really important tool, because it can help lower your blood sugars. Your muscles use sugar, glucose, as the source of energy, so it can actually lower your blood sugars. Begin after you have undergone a stress test before starting on a fitness routine. Just walking like maybe half a mile in the beginning, would be enough, then you can slowly build up from that.

Do walk whenever you have the chance. Get off the bus or subway a few stops early or park at the far end of the lot. Walking is a great place to start . You don't need any fancy equipment, you don't need to have a special outfit or anything, what you really need is a good pair of walking shoes, and to go out and start.

Do avoid smoking. Smoking doubles the damage to the body by contributing to poor blood glucose control by interfering with the timing and effects of insulin. It also raises your blood glucose level, which contributes to poor diabetes control. If not checked in time ,it can cause hardening of the arteries.

This particularly affects the body's larger arteries to the legs and brain, making amputation and strokes more likely. Although it is true that most people gain some weight when they quit smoking, for the vast majority of smokers the gain amounts to less than 10 pounds. The health benefits of quitting far outweigh the risks of a few extra pounds . Beyond fear of weight gain, the most common obstacle to quitting is the addictiveness of nicotine. Ask your doctor or nurse about ways to help you quit smoking. Log on to: to know more on Diabetes & Smoking. Do talk with family and friends about managing your diabetes. Be an inspiration with your healthy lifestyle.

The mainstay in treatment of Type 2 diabetes is actually diet and exercise. Regardless what type of medicines you're going to be on, diet and exercise are always going to be important. Your medicines are not going to work if you mess up at your diet.

How To Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

A healthy diet and regular exercise program not only will improve your appearance, but it also can improve your health and decrease your risk of developing certain diseases. Recent studies by Harvard researchers have concluded that moderate exercise and a healthy diet can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes - the most common form of diabetes. The study overwhelmingly indicated that by making the appropriate lifestyle changes, diabetes can be prevented over 90% of the time. The study also concluded that lifestyle changes significantly reduced the risk of getting the disease by 58% among people who already showed signs of developing diabetes.

Do ask your health care provider for an A1C test. A1C, short for hemoglobin A1C, is the best test to know if your blood glucose (sugar) is under control. Aim for a fasting blood sugar between 70 and 120. Before a meal, we want it less than 122, and after a meal, about an hour after a meal, we want it to be less than 180. These are actually the blood sugars that you should be aiming for, and that is actually what we call good control. Do control the ABCs of diabetes: A1C for blood glucose, B for blood pressure and C for cholesterol. That's the key to reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 90% of all diabetes cases. It occurs when your body can not properly utilize insulin in getting nutrients to your cells. This results in high levels of sugar in your blood. The number of cases of diabetes has been growing rapidly. Studies indicate that over 16 million Americans have some form of diabetes! Type 2 diabetes used to be considered a disease of the old, but not anymore. It is becoming much more prevalent in younger people and has recently been showing an alarming increase among young people.

Diabetes is a disease where your underlying genetic background is critical. If you have these genes and are at risk of developing diabetes, your lifestyle decisions very well may determine whether these genes become active or remain dormant.

What is most interesting is that Harvard researchers determined that 91% of cases among the people they studied could have been prevented by watching their weight, eating a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and not drinking and smoking. Being overweight is the number one reason people contract diabetes -61% of all cases are attributed to obesity and weight problems.

Some other interesting facts: Overweight women cut their risk by 24% simply by walking regularly. There is a direct correlation between the amount of exercise and instances of diabetes. The more exercise, the less instances. Those who did 7 or more hours a week of exercise had a 29% lower risk than those who did not exercise or exercised less than 30 minutes per week. Eating a diet that is high in fiber, low in fat and low in partially hydrogenated oils (french fries, commercial baked goods) also significantly decreases your risk. If you already do not do so, become a label reader!

Pepper may not just be for seasoning. Capsaicin is a protein compound found in pepper and peppers significantly lowers blood sugar levels and increases insulin levels. Researchers have not concluded if the pepper compound acts by increasing the release of insulin, or by slowing it's breakdown. Large doses of aspirin also lower your blood sugar and is an effective treatment of diabetes, but researchers warn that that the large doses required have detrimental side effects (intestinal bleeding, dizziness, nausea) that outweigh the benefits.

There are many diseases and illnesses you have no control over, but type 2 diabetes is highly preventable by watching your weight, exercising, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking or drinking.

Vitamins Beneficial to Diabetes Suffers

Anyone who suffers from diabetes knows that the effects it has on your body can be many and vary from person to person. For many people the effects are few, but for some they can be severe. Some diabetes sufferers must rely on insulin to manage their diabetes, while others can manage the disease with a proper diet and exercise regimen under the supervision of their physician. In either case proper diet, including vitamins and other supplements shown to be beneficial to people with diabetes, and exercise can help sustain the body and prevent unnecessary damage to the body.

As is always the case, be sure to discuss any vitamins or other supplements you would be interested in adding to your diet with your physician before making any changes. While vitamins and supplements can be very beneficial they can also have adverse affects when taken in combination with certain drugs or in too high a dose. Your doctor is your partner in managing your diabetes and can help you make the best possible choices where your health is concerned.

Below is a list of vitamins and supplements that have been shown to be beneficial in the management of diabetes.

Folic Acid - has been attributed to helping with vascular disease in people with diabetes. It is said to act upon homocysteine levels in the body. Homocysteine is a substance normally metabolized into amino acids by the body but in high levels it can cause vascular problems and heart disease. Two groups of people are known to have problems metabolizing homocysteine, those with a rare genetic problem that causes early heart attacks and people with diabetes.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids - found in fish, flaxseed and canola oil, omega-3 fatty acids have been found to lower triglyceride levels, but the final word on their effect on glucose control still eludes researchers. Alpha-lipoic acid - aids in glucose control and has been shown to act as a very strong antioxidant in the fight against diabetes. Gamma-linolenic acid - has been shown to improve nerves that have been damaged from diabetes.

Selenium and vitamin E taken together could play a role in controlling some negative affects diabetes has on the liver.

Chromium - The ability of the element chromium to improve blood sugars is a hotly debated diabetes topic. There is some evidence that it has a role in glucose homeostasis [equilibrium] and when taken correctly under doctor's supervision, can do no harm.

Vitamin B6 plays a role in a variety of biochemical reactions in the human body including the metabolism of amino acids and glycogen, the synthesis of nucleic acids, hemoglobin, sphingomyelin and other sphingolipids, and the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine.

Vitamin D plays a role in strengthening the body's immune system, assisting blood cell formation, and may support processes that reduce the risk of developing some forms of cancer. It is believed that vitamin D may protect people from a number of other conditions including multiple sclerosis, autoimmune arthritis and diabetes.

This list may seem a bit overwhelming, however many of these vitamins and other supplements can be found in combination with one another making it much easier for you to take them.

Do You know The Signs and Symptoms Of Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that attacks the body's natural ability to breakdown sugar, which can lead to a variety of unpleasant conditions and complications due to a buildup of glucose in the body. The most notable condition is the body's failure to properly produce the compound called insulin. Other health issues associated with this glucose buildup include nerve damage, which could lead to more life threatening ailments such as a rupturing of vital organs in the body.

As you've probably already gathered, diabetes is a deadly disease. Even worse, medical studies clearly show that it is also one of the most difficult medical conditions to avoid. In fact, almost 10% of all consumers over the age of 20 within the United States are currently suffering from symptoms as a result of diabetes. This percentage equates to a rather alarming 21 million individuals that are suffering from diabetic conditions.

Although there is currently no known or published cure for diabetes, there are medical studies taking place with the hopes of isolating a cure. These studies include the following:

- A manipulation of the genetic makeup of our cells

- The artificial development of insulin producing cells called Islet cells

- Pancreas rehabilitation or transplant based on the fact that the pancreas is the body's internal organ responsible for producing insulin

School plays an important role in every child's life. It's no different for a diabetic child. You can help make your diabetic child's school experience as safe and normal as possible by preparing teachers, classmates and school officials to deal with the complications of this disease. Your diabetic child has the same dreams and interests as other children. There's no reason diabetes should prevent him or her from living a relatively normal school life.

Meanwhile, for the many people currently inflicted with diabetes, treatment is carried out as quickly as possible while the disease is still in its infancy or early stages. In order to do this a thorough understanding of the symptoms of diabetes is required. The major symptoms of an individual suffering from diabetes include fatigue, rapid weight loss, a constant hunger, excessive thirst and the frequent need to urinate.

Individuals experiencing many or all of these symptoms should seek out medical advice from a doctor in order to determine if they may have contracted diabetes. This is especially true if there is a history of diabetes that runs in the family.

How To Balance Your Child's Diabetes And School

When your child has diabetes, it plays a major role in his or her life. Your child's normal routine, good habits and bad habits, forgetfulness and outright disregard for things that should be done, can all be supervised at home. But at school, you don't have that same control. You have to trust that your diabetic child and the people around him or her will do what's necessary to make sure your child's health isn't at risk.

Here are a few suggestions to help you balance your child's diabetic needs with his or her school environment.

1. Before your child heads off to school, it's vital to prepare teachers, classmates, and school officials. First, they need to know what diabetes is and the potential situations that may arise for a diabetic child. Second, the school nurse, teachers, and school officials should have a plan in place for any emergencies that may arise as a result of your child's diabetes.

2. While childhood diabetes has seen a growing number of Type II cases, the majority of children with diabetes have Type I diabetes, which can require insulin shots throughout the day. In most cases, these can be self administered. However, teachers and school officials need to be aware of how often such shots should be administered and be prepared to allow a time and place for your child to receive his or her insulin shots.

3. Teachers, in particular, need to have a heightened awareness of the subtleties of diabetes. Requests by your child for a drink of water or a snack or the need to use the restroom should be taken seriously.

4. The decision to inform your child's classmates of his or her diabetes is a personal one. If such a disclosure is made, it should be presented in as positive a light as possible. For instance, you or another family member may want to do a short presentation to the class about diabetes and potential diabetes emergencies. Make sure the presentation is kept simple to understand, covers the basics of blood sugar and insulin and the need to supplement the body's needs with insulin shots, and allows the children to ask questions.

5. Help classmates, teachers and school officials understand that low blood sugar can cause unusual behavior in a diabetic. Your child may display unusual anger, become grouchy or headachy, fall asleep unexpectedly, or become confused about simple things. In such instances, the teacher or school nurse must recognize the signs and offer your child fruit juice, a piece of candy or soda pop to help bring his or her blood sugar level up.

6. If you haven't already, you need to educate your child on how to recognize the various signs inside his or her body that something isn't quite right. These can include tiredness, becoming shaky, feeling butterflies in the stomach, sweating, or feeling as if the blood is draining from your child's head. Again, these are subtle signs that your child's blood sugar level is dropping and he or she needs a small snack to bring it back under control.
