Depression's Link to Diabetes

Disease of the pancreas - Type 1 Diabetics - Type 2 Diabetics - Why Glucometer Testing Is a Must!

We hear about diabetes a lot these days, but what is it? Diabetes is a disease of the pancreas and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. The pancreas is incapable of producing sufficient amounts of insulin, a hormone that is needed to control glucose, a sugar in our blood streams, to be absorbed into our cells for energy. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1, IDDM or insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus and type 2, NIDDM or non-insulin-dependent-diabetes-mellitus.

Step two, get yourself and your family actively exercising during daylight hours.

Let's talk about the first group, the IDDM's. These are the diabetics that are completely dependent on insulin to lead a productive healthy life with a few inconveniences. How does diabetes happen? It is thought that the pancreas is attacked by a viral infection which destroys the panaceas' ability to produce insulin, most type 1 diabetics are very young when this happens. This group must keep a very close relationship with their doctor to monitor their blood sugar levels.

They also, must monitor their own blood sugar levels periodically throughout the day, everyday. When called for, they must administer insulin either by injection, the safest way to make sure that they are getting the correct amount of insulin into their blood stream or through an inhaler which delivers insulin to the blood stream by way of their lungs. Insulin cannot be delivered into the blood stream through ingestion (digestion destroys - alters the insulin), so that's why we don't have a magic pill for our type 1 diabetics to take.

The IDDM's are about 5 to 10 percent of the diabetic population. They also, must watch their diets. High protein, low fat diets with minimal simple carbohydrates (potatoes, corn, bread, flour, sugar, etc.), and remember to eat plenty of complex carbohydrates (fruits and vegetables with the exception of root veggies especially carrots and beets). Most IDDM's lead productive healthy lives and learn to balance their inconveniences into their daily routine minimizing the effects of this disease on their lives, but make no mistake it isn't easy to be an IDDM.

Now the second group of diabetics are the NIDDM's or type 2 diabetics. This group of individuals have much more control over this disease than those with IDDM. 90 to 95 percent of diabetics fall into the NIDDM category. Heredity and or the inheritance of lifestyle, eating habits, genetics, and emotional health are all part contributors to NIDDM, type 2 diabetes.

The NIDDM's are the largest group of diabetics and many are truly unaware that they are diabetic. It is a slow insidious process till one day you have nerve damage, loss of eyesight, loss of weight, fatigue, skin sores, kidney disease, liver problems, and or heart disease, before you find out that you have diabetes. So everyone should be tested for diabetes at least once a year, and you can test yourself for this disease. We strongly urge you to buy a glucometer. No household should be without one.

And, mark your calender each year, so you don't forget to test everyone in your household. If you have a blood sugar level of a 110 or less your lifestyle may not need to be altered. If you have a blood sugar level of 110 to 126 then you fall in the borderline realm and you should alter your lifestyle with regard to exercise and diet. If you consecutively fall into a range of 126 or above for three days, you are diabetic and should make an appointment with a health care professional who specializes in this disease!

If you are healthy or fall into the borderline range, these herbs and course of supplements, may help prevent diabetes. Buy some bitter melon, gudmar, gulvel, cedar berries, dandelion root, fenugreek seeds, bilberry, juniper berries, goldenseal, garlic and uva ursi. Why? Because these are all herbs that cleanse the kidney, liver, and also help detoxify the pancreas helping to make the pancreas more efficent in the production of insulin.

Purchase alpha-lipoic acid, chromium picolinate, garlic supplements, l-carnitine, l-glutomine, Vitamin B complex, biotin, inositol, Coenzyme Q-10, Coenzyme A, magnesium, manganese and zinc, they are all essential to everyones diet, but they are especially helpful for the diabetic in keeping the pancreas healthy. You can take these herbs and supplements as directed, and if you are eating a healthy and balanced diet, a one a day formulated for your gender, may be all that you need. Every once in awhile, for preventive measures, detoxify yourself by drinking a glass of green juice and a cup of beanpod tea.

What's Beanpod tea?

Sounds like something out of lil'Abner!

It's a very natural way to detoxify your pancreas and it's simple to make. Try to get some sun at least a couple of hours a day. Why? Because the sun's UV rays help to prevent pancreatic cancer and stimulate the pancreas to produce vitamin D. You don't need to "layout" and get a tan, just a little bike riding, gardening, or walking everyday in the sun, will help your pancreas stay healthy which in turn helps keep diabetes at bay!

Preventive care is the most cost effective means to minimise your chances of becoming a type 2 diabetic. Researchers are working very hard for both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, but in the mean time preventive measures are the best course of action. Step one is to be proactive and buy yourself and family a glucometer, and use it! Test yourself and your family at least once a year.

A simple way to do this is set a routine with the entire family to ride bikes, walk, run, kayak, rock climb, etc. for at least 45 minutes three times a week. Make a conscious commitment to make this happen. I suggest you pick an activity that is different each time, and make it an event. Invite your family member's friends, and bring along your own friends, too. This insures that your children and husband or your wife won't get bored, and makes it fun, not only for yourself, but also for your whole family. It also insures they're eagerness to participate, and they may not even know that they're changing to a healthier lifestyle and that can be very satisfying to see your loved ones enjoying each other and growing closer together while at the same time learning to be healthier.

Step three, plan your meals. Count your calories and make sure that you are portioning correctly. If you or a family member falls into the borderline realm, that is between 110 and 126 on the glucometer scale, then lower the consumption of simple carbohydrates, all starchy complex carbohydrates, and raise the protein and exercise levels. Test three consecutive days or until they fall below 110. If you or one of your family members do not fall below 110 and are staying in the diabetic range, make an appointment with a health care professional that specializes in this disease immediately. Ask for recommendations on a nutritional course and or a nutritionist to help you or your family member to alter those lifestyles. Take these steps and you can lead a healthy and happy life!

How To Balance Your Child's Diabetes And School

When your child has diabetes, it plays a major role in his or her life. Your child's normal routine, good habits and bad habits, forgetfulness and outright disregard for things that should be done, can all be supervised at home. But at school, you don't have that same control. You have to trust that your diabetic child and the people around him or her will do what's necessary to make sure your child's health isn't at risk.

Here are a few suggestions to help you balance your child's diabetic needs with his or her school environment.

1. Before your child heads off to school, it's vital to prepare teachers, classmates, and school officials. First, they need to know what diabetes is and the potential situations that may arise for a diabetic child. Second, the school nurse, teachers, and school officials should have a plan in place for any emergencies that may arise as a result of your child's diabetes.

2. While childhood diabetes has seen a growing number of Type II cases, the majority of children with diabetes have Type I diabetes, which can require insulin shots throughout the day. In most cases, these can be self administered. However, teachers and school officials need to be aware of how often such shots should be administered and be prepared to allow a time and place for your child to receive his or her insulin shots.

3. Teachers, in particular, need to have a heightened awareness of the subtleties of diabetes. Requests by your child for a drink of water or a snack or the need to use the restroom should be taken seriously.

4. Help classmates, teachers and school officials understand that low blood sugar can cause unusual behavior in a diabetic. Your child may display unusual anger, become grouchy or headachy, fall asleep unexpectedly, or become confused about simple things. In such instances, the teacher or school nurse must recognize the signs and offer your child fruit juice, a piece of candy or soda pop to help bring his or her blood sugar level up.

5. If you haven't already, you need to educate your child on how to recognize the various signs inside his or her body that something isn't quite right. These can include tiredness, becoming shaky, feeling butterflies in the stomach, sweating, or feeling as if the blood is draining from your child's head. Again, these are subtle signs that your child's blood sugar level is dropping and he or she needs a small snack to bring it back under control.

School plays an important role in every child's life. It's no different for a diabetic child. You can help make your diabetic child's school experience as safe and normal as possible by preparing teachers, classmates and school officials to deal with the complications of this disease. Your diabetic child has the same dreams and interests as other children. There's no reason diabetes should prevent him or her from living a relatively normal school life.

Diabetes And Society

One of the things most people do not know is that there are several different types of diabetes, and that diabetes is a disease that will stay with you for the rest of your life, there is no cure from diabetes and that means that once a person is informed that he has diabetes this condition will follow him for the rest of his or her life.

The decision to inform your child's classmates of his or her diabetes is a personal one. If such a disclosure is made, it should be presented in as positive a light as possible. For instance, you or another family member may want to do a short presentation to the class about diabetes and potential diabetes emergencies. Make sure the presentation is kept simple to understand, covers the basics of blood sugar and insulin and the need to supplement the body's needs with insulin shots, and allows the children to ask questions.

Coming to terms with the fact that one has diabetes may be psychologically difficult sometimes, especially if the person has no experience with long and difficult diseases and illnesses. The mental strain and the difficulty of grasping the new situation might sometimes cause a state of confusion and anger, denial and expressions of mood swings. While this is all normal and understandable an adult behaving in such a way may be problematic to explain to young children or even friends and colleagues.

As in all other difficult situation that family and close friends can always be a source of great comfort and relief, and if you can find some people who also discovered in later stages of life that they had diabetes that will help too, the idea of companionship between patients of many diseases can help the patient realize that there are ways to deal with the news and that people have done that before him.

Dealing with the discovery of diabetes is not as crashing as other fatal diseases that we know about and hear about on a daily basis, but for a healthy individual this may come as a complete shock, and any person that is not well informed abbot diabetes to begin with may take this as a devastating realization. It is important to stress that diabetes is something that you can live with and that there is increasing awareness around the world about diabetes patient and their needs, as well as the medical attention that diabetics require.

The fact that there are three different kinds of diabetes should make it clear that everyone needs to know about diabetes since it is not an illness that is limited to young age only, diabetes can be discovered later in life and the risks associate with the lack of treatment for diabetes is high. The lack of knowledge about diabetes causes future patients to panic or be o relaxed about their condition, which is in both cases dangerous to their health.

To summarize what has been said in this article so far, the discovery of diabetes in a later stage of life can be a shock, the family and friends should try their best to support the diabetic and to help him or her to realize that this is a disease that requires daily attention and that is potentially dangerous if not treated properly, overall the level of awareness in the general public to the diabetes disease and to diabetics in general should be addressed and any individual should try his or her best to explain the dangers of the illness to others not only to increase the awareness but also to try and improve society treatment of diabetics.

Diabetes And Men's Health

Men with diabetes have a higher incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED): a man with diabetes has a 4 in 5 chance of facing ED, whereas a man without diabetes has a 1 in 5 chance.

Erectile Dysfunction refers to an inability to achieve or maintain an erection hard enough for sexual intercourse. It falls under the blanket term impotence, which also covers other sexual problems such as lack of arousal and the inability to orgasm. Erectile dysfunction is not simply an occasional inability to perform sexually that occurs to every man; if you have erectile dysfunction, you will be unable to achieve or maintain an erection over 50% of the time.

Although erectile dysfunction often occurs with age, it is not a normal part of aging and can be treated. For men with diabetes, erectile dysfunction occurs an average of 10-15 years earlier than in other men.

Why does diabetes often lead to erectile dysfunction? Diabetes is linked with many nervous system disorders, and erectile dysfunction can be caused by nerve damage. Nervous system damage can cause erectile dysfunction because the nervous system tells your body when you are aroused. If you are emotionally aroused but your nervous system cannot send the message to your penis, then you will not get an erection. Diabetes can also cause blood vessel disorder. Vascular damage (damage to the blood vessels) alters the blood flow in the body. As an erection is caused when corpora cavernosa in the penis are filled with blood, vascular damage can affect erections. Erections are caused by the interplay of the nervous system and the vascular system, along with other factors.

People with diabetes are more apt to be depressed. Depression might be caused by poor blood sugar control and hormonal imbalance. Psychological factors can play a large role in erectile dysfunction.

How can you prevent erectile dysfunction if you have diabetes?

* Control your blood sugar levels. This will help you prevent possible nerve damage or damage to your vascular system. These are two of the complications from diabetes that can lead to erectile dysfunction.

* Talk to you doctor or health team. They will be particularly helpful for you if you are trying to maintain even blood sugar.

* Quit smoking. Smoking damages your blood vessels by making them contract.

* Don't drink excessively. Excessive alcohol consumption can also damage your blood vessels.

* Exercise. Having a steady exercise regimen will help keep your nervous system and vascular system healthy.

* Eat well. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been proven to prevent complications in diabetes, and will help you control your blood sugar levels.

* Calm yourself. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or other psychological issue that is inhibiting your sexual performance, see a professional. Often just the fear of erectile dysfunction is enough to hamper performance.

Treatments

If you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, consider seeing a urologist. A urologist specializes in sexual health and will be able to help you decide on the best treatment program. You might be prescribed medication, such as Viagra, that will help you achieve an erection. You might also consider using a vacuum pump to help blood enter the penis. To maintain the erection you place a ring at the base of the penis. You might consider having an implant or penile injections.

Before taking any medical action, try using the tips above to manage your erectile dysfunction. Diabetes does not necessarily have to lead to complications, which includes erectile dysfunction. You can lead a normal sexual life, even as you grow older. Knowing this information might help you find sexual energy you didn't know you had!

Diabetes Supplies

There is no cure for diabetes. That's a reality more and more Americans are waking up to. The best that can be done about this silent killer is to limit the damage by taking medication and leading a more disciplined life.

According to the latest figures released by the American Diabetes, 17 million Americans are suffering from diabetes. These are people that need proper advice and an authentic medical outlet for obtaining their diabetes supplies. Scores of vendors have already set up shop, on and offline, to provide needed diabetes supplies. Insurance companies have supplied lists to their policy holders of diabetes supplies for which they allow claims.

Depending upon their condition and the kind of medication prescribed, the diabetes patient needs to keep a proper stock of the following supplies:

Insulin, Insulin Pumps and Syringes:
Insulin is generally prescribed when a diabetes patient has exhausted all the traditional channels of medication. Also, there is no returning back once the patient is put onto insulin. Fortunately, the patient need not visit a dispensary or a hospital to get his daily or weekly quota of insulin. The patient can take the insulin directly either by injecting it through a syringe or by using the insulin pump.

Among the devices available to a patient are:
* insulin delivery syringes,
* insulin pens,
* jet injectors,
* external insulin pumps,
* implantable insulin pumps
* and insulin inhalers.

The patient can decide which device suits him more - both from the point of view of physical convenience and costs.

Because some kinds of insulin have to be bought either from a pharmacy or a drug company, the patient must also know the places from where insulin can be bought.

Patients treated for diabetes and depression often show no improvement. This is usually due to little or no change in diet and exercise improvements. These lifestyle changes can dramatically improve the symptoms of diabetes and depression. Diabetic patients that suffer from depression have twice the mortality rate of those who do not suffer from depression. The complications are numberous and include: heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney and teeth and gum disease. Over 21 million Americans are noted as suffering with mostly Type 2 diabetes, directly resulting from obesity.

Blood Glucose Meter, lancets and testing strips:
Every diabetes patient must buy a blood glucose meter. He must also stock a full supply of lancets and testing strips to enable him to test the sugar levels regularly. There are several testing meters available today, the leading brands being OneTouch, Accu-Chek and FreeStyle. The testing is an important part of controlling diabetes because it helps the patient regulate the sugar levels. The patient should therefore never compromise on this key diabetes control kit, and should always carry it with him.

Emergency Supplies:
Diabetes patients must always carry on their person a small amount of glucose that can be taken whenever there is an attack of hypoglycemia. They should also keep sweet juice, honey or candy at easily reachable places at office or home for such emergencies.

It is also advisable for patients to carry medical identity papers to enable passers by to extend help in emergencies.

The patients who are prone to severe hypoglycemic conditions must stock injectable glucagon that can be injected if the patient faints.

Diabetic snack bars:
A recent development has been the manufacture of diabetic snacks. Such food bars are not meant to check attacks of hypoglycemia but to prevent it. They can be used as part of regular meal to stock up sugar supply.

Skin cream:
Another useful diabetes resource is skin cream that comes in useful during travel, and saves the patient unnecessary pain.

Given the increase in the number of patients, several diabetes supply stores have come up in the US These stores are a good source to obtain regular supplies. Patients can also enlist the help of American Diabetes Association to locate diabetes supply stores in their area.

Depression's Link to Diabetes

Diabetes is now a disease that affects people not just North America wide, but worldwide. Many complications come with diabetes. Blindness, cardiovascular disease and kidney problems can all result from diabetes. Amputation of limbs may be a necessary result of diabetes is extreme cases. Studies have also linked early life depression as a contributor to adult diabetes.

Understanding why depression can lead to diabetes and other problems is important, as lifestyle changes are part of the solution in dealing with diabetes. Depression can lead to problems such as weight gain, poor eating habits, and decreased motivation for exercise. Eating healthy foods, monitoring body weight closely and getting adequate exercise are treatments for both diabetes and depression. Both may also require the use of medication in a comprehensive treatment plan.

Children and teenagers diagnosed with depression when they are young, typically become overweight as adults. Being overweight often leads to diabetes as an adult. Early prevention for adult diabetes involves monitoring and controlling for being overweight as a teenager and beyond. Research indicates that there is also a link between women with depression and anxiety disorder and an inflated body mass index (BMI) as compared to similar women that do not suffer from depression. This appears to be more typical for women than with men.

Diabetics with depression often take poor care of their health and are prone to smoke, drink alcohol, be overweight, not exercise and eat poorly. As the body's cells gradually loose sensitivity to insulin, blood sugar levels need to be controlled. Failure to do so can lead to early death. A recent clinical study shows that elderly patients with diabetes may respond positively to clinical intervention programs. Depressed diabetic patients are now believed to be hopeful candidates for successful clinical intervention programs.

Early warning signs for diabetes involve childhood depression and anxiety disorder. Healthy eating, proper nutrition and regular sleep will help to prevent and fight against diabetes. Reducing the consumption of refined sugars and having a fiber rich diet are important parts of healthy eating. It is important to be focused on the point that fighting diabetes and depression can be done using the same methods.
