Six Simple Things You Can Do To Prevent Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that strikes more people every year. It also leads to severe complications such as heart problems, blindness, kidney trouble, and amputation of limbs. Diabetes has a genetic component that may make you more prone to the disease. It runs in families and women who have had gestational diabetes are at risk as well. Can we prevent or delay the onset of diabetes? Yes, there are some simple things you can do now that will allow you to avoid or delay this disease.

By making of few simple changes like this in your life, you can improve your overall health and wellbeing and of course delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.

1. Look at what you are eating. Eat smaller portions; you can make it look like more by using a smaller plate or a salad plate. Don't snack while you are cooking. You probably don't even realize how many calories you take in by snacking while cooking. Don't be tempted to "clean up" the unfinished food to keep from throwing it away or storing it in the refrigerator. Eat breakfast every day, and make your meal and snack times regular by having them at the same time each day.

2. Limit your meat, poultry, and fish intake to about three ounces a day. This is equal to about the size of a pack of cards. Another good tip is to listen to music instead of watching TV. If you are watching TV while you are eating, you are not aware of how much you are eating.

3. Low salt broth is a good substitute for oil and butter. Drinking a full glass of water before eating will also help reduce your appetite. If you are eating at a fast-food place, try choosing the healthier foods, such as grilled chicken, salad instead of fries, or fruit instead of desserts or shakes. It isn't necessary to deprive yourself of all your favorite foods, just cut down on portions and eat at regular times and choose healthier foods.

4. Limit your desserts, and when eating out, have a good-sized vegetable salad to take the edge off your appetite. When you receive your entrée, either share it with your dinner companion, or ask for a take-home box immediately after receiving your meal. Have meals that have been stir fried, or make with a nonstick spray.

5. Increase your physical activity! Yes, that means moving out of the chair and spending less time in front of the TV. There are small activities you can do to increase your physical activity. Turn the radio on and boogie while working on your household chores. Teach your kids how to dance the way you did when you were their age.

6. If you are at work, instead of sending e-mail to your co-worker, walk over to their desk and deliver the message in person. Take walks; it's a great way to keep up with your friends and an enjoyable, healthy way to take a break. Avoid the elevator and take the stairs as much as you are comfortable in doing that. One friend of mine marches in place during each commercial while she is watching TV. Don't circle the parking lot looking for the closest parking spot, park as far out as you feel comfortable in walking. Not only will it increase your activity level, but it also may save your car from a few dings.

Can Diabetes Cause Dry Skin?

Diabetes and Dry Skin
People with diabetes are more prone to skin problems than people who do not have diabetes. This is largely due to fluctuations in blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels are high, the body loses fluid and the resulting dehydration can lead to dry skin on the legs, feet and elbows. Dry skin can crack, letting germs that can cause infections into the body. High blood glucose levels also lower resistance to infections and slow healing, which, in turn, can increase the risk of skin infections or boils. These may take a long time to heal.

What's more, the nerve damage associated with diabetes can cause a decrease in sweating, which helps to keep skin soft and moist.

Because people with diabetes often have reduced nerve sensitivity and circulation in their hands and feet, it can sometimes be difficult to identify skin problems. Decreased sweating in the feet and legs can cause dry skin. (see Dry Skin)

As many as one-third of people with diabetes will have a skin disorder caused or affected by diabetes at some time in their lives. In fact, such problems are sometimes the first sign that a person has diabetes. Rough, dry and scaly skin affects at least 75 percent of people over the age of 64 who have diabetes.

Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's advice. But you can do a lot on your own to improve your skin, including drinking more water, showering less, and above all, moisturizing, moisturizing, moisturizing.

Tips for Keeping Skin Moist
1. Keep blood glucose levels under good control (4 - 7 mmol/L before eating; 5 - 10 mmol/L two hours after eating).
2. Drink plenty of fluids.
3. Bathe or shower in warm (not hot) water, as hot water can dry out skin.
4. Avoid taking long baths and washing excessively, as this can also cause loss of oil in the outer layers of the skin, causing further dryness.
5. Dry skin well after bathing or showering and then check for any areas that may be slightly red or particularly dry, as they may need special attention. (If this is the case, ask your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist for special treatment.)
6. If possible, take fewer showers/baths in the winter to preserve your skin's moisture, as skin is drier during this time than in other months.
7. Keep skin moist by using a lotion or cream after bathing.

Now that you know what causes dry skin, we urge you to find out more about the products that can counter Dry Skin today!

Two Types Of Diabetes & How They Differ

There are two types of diabetes, which consists of Type I and Type II. It is important to understand the distinction between the two and how both are treated.

Even if you can't completely prevent diabetes, delaying it for a few years or more will go a long way in avoiding many of the long-term side effects of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is commonly found in children and/or adolescents, but may also occur in adults. With type 1 diabetes, there is almost always a complete deficiency of insulin. As a result, the most common treatment is insulin injections, a lifestyle that consists of both diet and exercise and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels with the use of blood testing monitors. Patients who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can continue to enjoy a normal life providing they continue with their treatment and take special care to follow their doctor's instructions and/or recommendation.

With type 2 diabetes, an individual's insulin level is usually either normal or sometimes even elevated, but is not deficient. This form of diabetes is believed to be more complicated than type 1, but ironically is thought to be easier to treat. Because insulin is still being produced inside the body, type 2 diabetes often goes undetected for years. Symptoms are milder and may even be sporadic, which often reduces the level of concern. The main problem with type 2 diabetes going unnoticed is the potential for serious complications, including renal failure and coronary artery disease. The initial treatment phase of type 2 diabetes will likely include a lifestyle adjustment to feature increased physical activity and a diet that is geared toward weight loss. The next step, if necessary, will be medication and possibly insulin therapy if needed.

Both types of diabetes require that the patient maintain normal blood glucose levels in an effort to reduce the possibility of organ damage, including eyesight, kidney, blood circulation, etc. In order for this to occur, patients must carefully monitor their food intake and make sure to participate in regular exercise, all the while continuing to monitor their blood glucose level.

As of 2006, there is no known cure for diabetes. A chronic disease that effects many, diabetes is best treated through patient education, nutrition, self awareness and long-term care. In addition, patients are often urged to be aware of other symptoms that may indicate complications arising from diabetes.
