Finding out early if you have diabetes is important because treatment can prevent damage to the body. One of the preventions you can take, based on a report of a recent study, is by having the right amount of sleep.
Those who get too much or not enough sleep may increase diabetes risks. Dr. Henry Klar Yaggi from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, who lead the study, assumed those who sleep less than 6 hours per night, as well as those who sleep more than 8 hours, were at significantly increased risk for developing diabetes, compared to those who sleep 7 to 8 hours.
What else can you do to beat diabetes and live healthier without being worried about this disease? Here are things you can do to control your diabetes:
1. Weight Control - By controlling your weight, you will make your blood glucose levels normal. If you are overweight, it is difficult for your body to make and use insulin properly. Insulin is produced to help the body to use and store the blood glucose. Use the Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body weight relative to height, to see whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
2. Physically Active - You can walk, bike, take the stairs, dance, swim and do other outdoor activities that will keep cholesterol and blood pressure under control. Being extra active while staying indoor can also increase the number of calories you burn, such as walking around while you are talking on the phone, getting up to change the TV channel instead of using the remote control, working in the garden or cleaning up the house.
3. Aerobic - You might not know this activity can lower your blood glucose and improve your body's ability to use insulin. Doing aerobic for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, provides many benefits for your health. You can either take an aerobic class.
4. Following A Healthful Meal Plan - Having a meal plan can have big impact on your blood glucose. You can get sick if the blood glucose goes too high due to eating too much food containing lots of fat and calories. It is better to look at the serving sizes of the food you eat. Take more fruits and vegetables and lessen your salt intake.
5. Taking Diabetes Test - If you are potential to get diabetes, taking diabetes test is strongly recommended. The doctor will be able to explain about your condition after you have done a fasting blood glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test.
So, the important thing is to control or prevent diabetes by balancing the blood glucose levels. If you can't control them, the possibility of suffering diabetes will be higher.

Reduct Your Risk Of Developing Type II Diabetes
At least 10 million Americans are at risk for type II diabetes, many of them will develop the disease at some point in their lives. Is it possible to prevent diabetes, especially if your medical professional has already diagnosed you with pre diabetes? Yes, you can prevent or at the very least delay onset of type II diabetes with proper nutrition and exercise.
Losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight really isn't that much considering what an improvement it can bring to your health.
According to a study by the National Institute of Health people with an increased risk for type II diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through exercise and proper nutrition. If you currently weigh 160 pounds, you would need to lose between 8 and 11 pounds. If you were weighing in at 200 pounds, you would only need to lose between 10 and 14 pounds to see a major improvement in your blood sugar levels.
Get started by cutting out some of the high calorie foods in your diet and substituting them with fresh produce and lean meat. Eat an apple instead of a candy bar or a small bag of chips as a snack. Bake your chicken instead of frying it and replace the heavy cream in your coffee with skim milk. Small changes will go a long over time.
Since we are talking about small changes, let's look at how you can easily incorporate a little bit of exercise each day. Ideally you want to aim for 30 minutes of daily exercise. This can be as simple as taking a 30-minute walk at lunch or walking around the block in the morning and when you get home from work in the afternoon. Go for a bike ride through the neighborhood, or pedal on your stationary bike while you watch your favorite TV show. Remember every little bit of exercise will help in diabetes prevention.
Start with a few small changes and make them a habit. Before you know it you will have lost 5, 10 or 15 pounds and will have dramatically decreased your risk of developing type II diabetes.

You might be thinking "What's the connection between diabetes and the menopause?"
Well, for ladies reaching that certain age, it can be very traumatic - especially when some of the effects experienced can easily be mistaken for those we have to be aware of when managing our diabetes...
If sugar levels drop too low, because of not eating enough or at the right times, you suffer a hypoglycemia episode (sometimes called 'hypo' for short). For me, this usually manifests itself as shaking; irritability; sweating and a faint-headed feeling. If you are diabetic and have ever had low-blood sugar you may recognize some of these symptoms, amongst others. A quick 'glucose fix' usually settles it within 5-10 minutes.
Now, compare that to some of the symptoms of starting the menopause; hot flushes [I call them 'power-surges' ;)] - similar to the sweats of a hypo; mood swings - akin to the irritability you might experience during a hypo. It's very easy to confuse the symptoms you are feeling.
When I first started the menopause, I frequently confused waking at 2 a.m. in the morning in a cold sweat as a hypo and took a quick sugar boost to settle myself. That pushed my blood sugar levels up when I didn't need it. Not a good idea!
It was only after visiting my Doctor to talk about these frequent, unexpected hypos I discovered I was starting the menopause (I was in my late 40s, so it was rather unexpected, normally it doesn't occur until early-to-mid 50s).
If you are a lady, with diabetes controlled by medication, and you are in your early 50s and you start having frequent, unexplained hypos - check your sugar levels before 'treating the condition'. And get your Doctor to check your symptoms. You may be confusing symptoms of diabetes and the menopause.
And guys; if your lady normally has great control of her diabetes and suddenly seems to be showing the same symptoms when she was getting her diabetes into balance (if you knew her then) please be supportive and understanding, she's going through one hell of an experience, but I promise, she will come through and be her normal, loving and charming self once again.

What You Must Know About Diabetes
Diabetes Mellitus is a disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that helps the body's tissues absorb glucose (sugar) so it can be used as a source of energy. The condition may also develop if muscle, fat, and liver cells respond poorly to insulin. In people with diabetes, glucose levels build up in the blood and urine, causing excessive urination, thirst, hunger, and problems with fat and protein metabolism. Diabetes mellitus differs from the less common diabetes insipidus, which is caused by lack of the hormone vasopressin that controls the amount of urine secreted.
Diabetes is most common in adults over 45 years of age; in people who are overweight or physically inactive; in individuals who have an immediate family member with diabetes; and in people of African, Hispanic, and Native American descent. The highest rate of diabetes in the world occurs in Native Americans. More women than men have been diagnosed with the disease.
There are two types of diabetes.In type 1 diabetes, which usually starts in childhood, the pancreas stops making insulin altogether. It is also called insulin-dependent diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, which starts in adulthood (and in some teenagers) the body still makes some insulin. But it doesn't make enough insulin, or the body can't use it properly. It is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes.
Diabetes is detected by measuring the amount of glucose in the blood after an individual has fasted (abstained from food) for about eight hours. In some cases, physicians diagnose diabetes by administering an oral glucose tolerance test, which measures glucose levels before and after a specific amount of sugar has been ingested. Another test being developed for Type 1 diabetes looks for specific antibodies (proteins of the immune system that attack foreign substances) present only in persons with diabetes. This test may detect Type 1 diabetes at an early stage, reducing the risk of complications from the disease.
Once diabetes is diagnosed, treatment consists of controlling the amount of glucose in the blood and preventing complications. Depending on the type of diabetes, this can be accomplished through regular physical exercise, a carefully controlled diet, and medication.
Individuals with Type 1 diabetes require insulin injections, often two to four times a day, to provide the body with the insulin it does not produce. The amount of insulin needed varies from person to person and may be influenced by factors such as a person's level of physical activity, diet, and the presence of other health disorders. Typically, individuals with Type 1 diabetes use a meter several times a day to measure the level of glucose in a drop of their blood obtained by pricking a fingertip. They can then adjust the amount of insulin injected, physical exercise, or food intake to maintain the blood sugar at a normal level. People with Type 1 diabetes must carefully control their diets by distributing meals and snacks throughout the day so as not to overwhelm the ability of the insulin supply to help cells absorb glucose. They also need to eat foods that contain complex sugars, which break down slowly and cause a slower rise in blood sugar levels.
For persons with Type 2 diabetes, treatment begins with diet control, exercise, and weight reduction, although over time this treatment may not be adequate. People with Type 2 diabetes typically work with nutritionists to formulate a diet plan that regulates blood sugar levels so that they do not rise too swiftly after a meal. A recommended meal is usually low in fat (30 percent or less of total calories), provides moderate protein (10 to 20 percent of total calories), and contains a variety of carbohydrates, such as beans, vegetables, and grains. Regular exercise helps body cells absorb glucose--even ten minutes of exercise a day can be effective. Diet control and exercise may also play a role in weight reduction, which appears to partially reverse the body's inability to use insulin

Is it possible to reduce the risks of diabetes through by losing weight? How about actually reversing the effects of diabetes? The answers to these questions may surprise you.
In March, 2005, the American Diabetes Association published the results of the comprehensive Diabetes Prevention Program. The Diabetes Prevention Program was conducted at over 25 medical centers nationwide and involved thousands of participants. The participants volunteered to have their habits monitored while they followed dietary and exercise recommendations. All participants had been diagnosed with 'pre-diabetes', a condition where the blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet in diabetic ranges.
Untreated, more than half of those people diagnosed with pre-diabetes will develop full-blown type 2 diabetes within a decade.
For the purposes of the study, the participants were divided into two groups. Both groups were given the same dietary recommendations to follow. However, the second group added exercise of at least 30 minutes per day, five days per week.
The results of the Diabetes Prevention Program were impressive. The group that followed the diet recommendations and also included daily exercise in their routines cut their risk of developing diabetes by a whopping 58%.
However, even more significant, researchers of the Diabetes Prevention Program found something that they didn't expect. The group that had added exercise to their daily routine actually had a substantial chance of reducing their blood sugar level to normal. This is something that many diabetes experts had previously thought was impossible.
Apparently, weight loss not only prevents a worsening of diabetes, it actually reverses the damage that obesity causes the insulin producing cells.
So, how much weight loss does it take to have an effect on the progression of diabetes? That depends a lot on your own body weight. Most experts agree that 5-7% of your body weight is considered "moderate weight loss". Therefore, depending on your body weight, a loss of as little as 7-10 pounds can make a difference in the progression of diabetes.
Of course, the best diets for weight loss are those that recommend steady, gradual weight loss. This type of weight loss plan usually calls for losing 1-2 pounds per week and is much more effective at keeping the weight off than any fad diet that calls for fast weight loss. The American Diabetes Society recommendations for a healthy diet to prevent diabetes is a perfect diet for steady, gradual weight loss. The diet includes the following suggested allowances:
*Grain - 6-11 servings per day (Bread, Cereal, Rice, Pasta) *Vegetables - 3-5 servings per day *Fruits - 2-4 servings per day Milk - 2-3 servings per day *Meat - 4-6 ounces per day (Meat, eggs, fish, dried beans, nuts and peanut butter) *Fats, Sweets, Alcohol - Occasional treats

It's also the recommended diet for the Heart Healthy diet from the American Heart Association, and the recommendations from the USDA's new MyPyramid.

With the onset of winter, some 18 million sufferers of Diabetes -- 6.3 percent of the U.S. population -- will need to take extra care to prevent dry skin and foot disorders associated with the chronic illness.
Many people do not find out they have the disease until they suffer from complication, which of course will be too late to cure as the body will already be damaged.
Shielding lotions may be the key to helping Diabetics stay on top of their dry skin conditions and spend more time enjoying life.
According to The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC), Diabetes affects skin and feet in several ways:
1. If your blood glucose is high, your body loses fluid, hastening the dry skin process. Dry skin can become itchy and can crack, causing you to scratch. Breaks in the skin allow germs to enter and cause infection. If your blood glucose is elevated, it feeds germs and makes infections worse.
2. Nerve damage can decrease the amount you sweat. Decreased sweating can lead to dry skin. Additionally, Diabetics with nerve damage in the legs and feet, have difficulty feeling pain, heat, or cold in the extremities, a condition called diabetic neuropathy, that can lead to a large sore or infection.
3. Poor blood flow, another very serious condition of Diabetics also known as peripheral vascular disease, happens when not enough blood flows to your legs and feet, slowing the healing process to sores or infections. Smoking when you have diabetes makes blood flow problems much worse.
When these harsh diabetic conditions can create such havoc in the skin and feet, it may not be enough to use oil-based lotions, that attempt to replace the natural oils lost on the skin's surface with artificial ones. These only offer temporary relief that does little to heal the skin, and regular use of lotions can actually cause the skin to produce less natural oils.
Using a quality shielding lotion will bond with the skin's outer layer of skin, protecting it from losing moisture in the first place, and attracts moisture from the air to the skin through the use of special high-quality humectant moisturizers. Additionally, shielding lotions help to keep irritants away from the deeper layers of skin, and won't wash off with soap or exposure to chemicals, allowing the skin to heal itself.
The following tips can help you stay on top of your skin care during the harsher winter months of managing diabetes:
· Keep your diabetes well managed. People with high glucose levels tend to have dry skin and less ability to fend off harmful bacteria. Both conditions increase the risk of infection.
· Keep skin clean and dry. Use talcum powder in areas where skin touches skin, such as armpits and groin.
· Avoid very hot baths and showers. If your skin is dry, don't use bubble baths. Moisturizing soaps may help. Afterward, use a shielding lotion to help your skin retain moisture. But don't put lotions between toes. The extra moisture there can encourage fungus to grow.
· Prevent dry skin. Scratching dry or itchy skin can open it up and allow infection to set in. Moisturize your skin with a shielding lotion to prevent chapping, especially in cold or windy weather.
· Treat cuts right away. Wash minor cuts with soap and water. Do not use Mercurochrome antiseptic, alcohol, or iodine to clean skin because they are too harsh. Only use an antibiotic cream or ointment if your doctor says it's okay. Cover minor cuts with sterile gauze. See a doctor right away if you get a major cut, burn, or infection.
· During cold, dry months keep your home more humid. Bathe less during this weather, if possible.
· Use mild shampoos. Do not use feminine hygiene sprays.
· See a dermatologist (skin doctor) about skin problems if you are not able to solve them yourself.
· Take good care of your feet. Check them every day for sores and cuts. Wear broad, flat shoes that fit well. Check your shoes for foreign objects before putting them on.
Ask your dermatologist if a shielding lotion is right for you in managing your diabetic dry skin conditions, and report any significant changes in your skin's condition or ability to heal.
