Diabetes - Living Beyond The Disease

Diabetes sneaks up on a person slowly - one grain of sugar at a time - one pound at a time -- until all of a sudden the pancreas and other systems of the body don't cooperate and function together. Insulin activity dwindles, fat and protein metabolism switches gears, and soon the circulation to the eye blood vessels and kidneys isn't behaving itself. Like the old song, "foot bone connected to the ankle bone, ankle bone connected to the knee bone," anything that goes wrong in one part of the body affects all the other parts. In diabetes the effects are life-threatening.

Diet remains the biggest task of these challenges because of the addictive nature of the body's longing for sweets.

In the United States alone there are over 18 million people with diabetes, (almost 7% of the population) and most of them aren't aware of it yet. People with diabetes cover a wide range of ages, from babies up to the senior citizens. Finding out how to handle the problem and following all the advice given to them consumes their lives. Ultimately the challenge requires creating a balance of diet, exercise and insulin. Balance, balance, balance! This becomes the controlling word in a diabetics life.

Keeping a balance between the acid and PH levels in the body also needs to be considered. Yet, it just isn't that easy to give up those bottles of Pepsi that seem to make you feel stable. 'White foods' are almost always a no-no for a diabetic, and those fresh vegetables are a life-sustaining necessity.

Diabetics often have unique personalities. They tend to be part of the most creative section of the population. They think in terms of wholeness rather than in details, which means they often love to start a project but have a hard time finishing it. Their creativity also can express in ways that others might call disorganized. The Ugly Duckling story portrays the hidden life of the diabetic, and they often don't have enough self-respect or self-esteem because they feel they are different.

From the brilliance of their thinking (which is often hid from the rest of the world) to the tag of 'erratic' that is sometimes applied to them, the diabetic is who you want around in a time of crisis. When the house is on fire they will excel because they are only dealing with one situation at a time.

However, should the car not start in the morning there are too many options available. A diabetic is as apt to call the suicide help line as to call a mechanic.

Living as a diabetic, or living with one, means acknowledging that there is a major difference in how the wholeness of the personality functions. Reinforce the positives and learn to live with a little disorder. Respect the bodies intelligence that knows when it needs to rest. The non-diabetic hasn't always learned this beautiful lesson on how to make the most of a human life. The diabetics are the way-showers!

Starvation and Diabetes Mellitus

Typical signs of diabetes mellitus for example are increasing thirst and hunger. Dropping weight for no obvious reason does not always mean to be some serious health problem, but can also be a possible symptom for diabetes. Patients then seem to suffer from starvation.

On the one hand you really run into starving for you obvious drop weight, even if you try to eat enough and provide your body with enough energy.

This diabetes mellitus starvation actually happens on two levels. Why you actually drop weight is due to the "starvation of your cells". What does that mean?

When suffering from diabetes mellitus, your pancreas does not produce proper amounts of insulin. Insulin is a hormone with many functions, the most important being the "key" to open the cells for glucose. Glucose on the other hand provides the cells with energy.

Without insulin the cells cannot be opened for needed energy, which means they are literally starving. If your cells do not get enough energy, your body reacts and you start to feel hungry. But if you eat more food, insulin is still missing and so your blood sugar level will increase. To reduce this again, sugar is filtered by your kidneys and is excreted via urine. Therefore increased urination is another sign of a possible diabetes disease.

Because your cells are not fed with energy, your body thinks you are starving (do not eat) and therefore needs to get the energy for physical activities from somewhere else. Body fat and muscles are then used to provide needed energy. This is why you start to drop weight for no obvious reason.

Natural Ways To Treat Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease caused when the body does not properly produce insulin. Seven percent of the population in the United States has diabetes. There are two types of the disease. Type one diabetes is where the body does not produce insulin and type two is where the body resists insulin. The majority of people diagnosed with this disease have type two. Symptoms of diabetes include extreme thirst, hazy vision, excessive hunger, weight fluctuation, fatigue and frequent urination. Diabetes is often controlled with insulin and prescription drugs, but diet and exercise play a large part in the ability to control the disease. There are also herbs that can help reduce the effects of diabetes.

Ensure a healthy diet by concentrating on foods such as vegetables, grains, fiber and legumes.

These foods will help regulate sugar in the blood stream. Avoid junk food and foods that contain sugar such as cakes, cookies and other sweets. Alcohol, tobacco and caffeine should also be avoided to maintain a nourishing diet.

Exercise helps promote good health and combats against the negative effects of diabetes. It is important to exercise regularly and keep an appropriate weight. People who are inactive or overweight have a higher risk factor for diabetes and are prone to suffer from more side effects caused by the disease. It is especially important to exercise to build muscle. Starting a weight program will increase muscle mass which will increase sensitivity to insulin.

There are many herbal remedies recognized for their therapeutic properties of treating diabetes. They are commonly found in pharmacies and grocery stores and can be a great natural remedy. Prickly pear cactus has shown positive results in the treatment of this disease and was recently recognized by the International Diabetes Center as a viable natural remedy. Bitter Melon has been used for years in Asia, Africa and South America for treatment. Garlic will reduce sugar levels and is a healthy way to add flavor to food while benefiting from its curative traits. Other common herbs are ginseng, psyllium, fenugreek, bilberry, dandelion and burdock.

Vitamin supplements are frequently used to help treat diabetes with the most commonly recommended ones being vitamins B6, C and E. Also, zinc, selenium, alpha lipoic acid, chromium and vanadium are commonly used. Rather than take individual supplements, some patients opt for a multivitamin to add to their diet.

Diabetes is a disease that affects a large portion of the population. The risks associated with it are serious but can be controlled with lifestyle change. Ensuring a well balanced diet and good exercise routine will help in preventing side effects. Also, proper use of herbs, vitamins and natural remedies will help prevent the necessity for more traditional means of medication.

What is Diabetes

A disease in which the body does not properly control the amount of sugar in the blood. As a result, the level of sugar in the blood is too high. This disease occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it properly. A disease in which the body does not properly control the amount of sugar in the blood. As a result, the level of sugar in the blood is too high. This disease occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it properly.

Diabetes mellitus is a medical disorder characterised by varying or persistent hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels), especially after eating. All types of diabetes mellitus share similar symptoms and complications at advanced stages. Hyperglycemia itself can lead to dehydration and ketoacidosis. Longer-term complications include cardiovascular disease (doubled risk), chronic renal failure (it is the main cause for dialysis), retinal damage which can lead to blindness, nerve damage which can lead to erectile dysfunction (impotence), gangrene with risk of amputation of toes, feet, and even legs. Serious complications are much less common in people who control their blood sugars well with lifestyle and medications.

Patient understanding and participation is vital, as blood glucose levels change continuously. Treatments that return the blood sugar to normal levels can reduce or prevent development of the complications of diabetes. Other health problems that accelerate the damaging effects of diabetes are smoking, elevated cholesterol levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise.

Diabetes Types:

There are two types of Diabetes are explained as follows: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is a life-long condition in which the pancreas stops making insulin. Without insulin, the body is not able to use glucose (blood sugar) for energy. To treat the disease, a person must inject insulin, follow a diet plan, exercise daily, and test blood sugar several times a day. Type 1 diabetes usually begins before the age of 30.

Type 2 diabetes:

Type 2 diabetes also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes, typically occurs after the age of 40 years. A resistance to insulin develops, often exacerbated by excess weight, leaving the pancreas unable to produce enough insulin to compensate.

Diabetes mellitus:

A group of disorders in which there is a defect in the transfer of glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into cells, leading to abnormally high levels of blood sugar.

Bronze diabetes:

A genetic disease in which the body takes in too much iron from food, this causes excess iron to be deposited in the liver and heart and other organs, eventually leading to organ failure and death.

Adult-onset diabetes:

Adult-onset diabetes is the former term for non-insulin dependent, or Type 2 diabetes. This term is no longer in use because, although this condition usually occurs after 40 years of age, it may develop much earlier.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is first treated with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise.
