According to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRFI), “every year over 13,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.” There is no known cure for this stealthy disease that attacks and destroys the beta cells that produce insulin. Symptoms present themselves suddenly and progress rapidly. Knowing what symptoms to look for, if you suspect juvenile diabetes has gripped your child, will lead you to seek the medical counsel of a physician.
Know the Symptoms:
The need to urinate often. If your child has been potty trained and begins wetting themselves frequently, consider juvenile diabetes as a possibility.
Extreme thirst and a keen desire for cold drinks that are sweet.
A need to eat often and complaints of being hungry. Eyesight problems such as blurred vision. Irritable.
Child complains of nausea and is vomiting. (Acute symptoms that need immediate attention) Losing weight while continuing to display a healthy appetite.
Irritability, being tired and listless may be attributed to behaviors all children exhibit at one time or another. The discovery of juvenile diabetes may happen during a visit to a physician for another ailment such as a vaginal yeast infection for girls or even a routine examination. Untreated diabetic children may display restless behavior and an apathetic attitude when it comes to school. The inability to focus on tasks at hand leaves them somewhat dysfunctional and frustrated.
Rapid, deep breaths that have a fruity odor are another more subtle sign that could easily be overlooked. The behaviors may go unnoticed by parents as symptoms of juvenile diabetes until the child reaches diabetic ketoacidosis. DKA is a serious condition with the body receiving little or no insulin and resulting in energy being produced by the breakdown of fat. This process causes ketones or acids to spill into the blood stream as toxins.
One quarter of the children with juvenile diabetes has all ready advanced to the level of diabetic ketoacidosis before seeing a physician or being diagnosed. If the juvenile diabetes continues to go untreated, the child may lapse into a diabetic coma.
A diagnosis is made through blood tests that target glucose levels and urine tests that measure the level of ketones and glucose.
The tests are far simpler to read than reading the behaviors of your child and being able to pinpoint them as potential symptoms of juvenile diabetes. With knowledge comes power and by knowing the symptoms parents have the power to begin successful management of type 1 diabetes giving their child the opportunity for as normal a childhood as possible.

Pregnancy and Diabetes
There are two types of diabetes that need to be considered by women who are, or are planning to become, pregnant:
1. Diabetes that pre-exists a pregnancy. and 2. Diabetes that developes during her pregnancy, which is commonly referred to as "gestational diabetes". Diabetics – those with pre-existing diabetes or those who develop gestational diabetes – often deliver larger babies. This is a result of the additional sugar, being produced by the mother, being passed through the umbilical cord into the blood stream of the baby where insulin then converts it into fat.
Complications can lead to problems with the pregnancy, including, miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth and can also lead to the women developing high blood pressure.
As long as diabetes is properly controlled there is no reason why a woman with diabetes can not have an uncomplicated pregnancy. It is when the diabetes is not controlled that problems and complications occur. It is strongly advised that diabetic women begin taking folic acid both before and after conception so as to avoid the baby developing birth defects. Folic acid should be taken all women who are pregnant, and is often included with gestational vitamins prescribed by doctors. Oral medications that are used to control type 2 diabetes are not approved for use during pregnancy so any woman who is using these drugs will need to switch to insulin before conceiving and during her pregnancy.
Gestational diabetes is diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Changing hormones and weight gain makes it hard for the body to keep up with the need of insulin. In the past, it has been viewed as a disease that wasn't damaging and usually disappeared after the birth of the baby. However, now it is considered a warning sign for both the mother and the baby of metabolic changes that may affect them for life.
Why does gestational diabetes occur? The placenta produces a hormone that goes against the affect of insulin on blood sugar. Women who have a history of diabetes in the family are also more sensitive to this hormone. Mothers who have experienced gestational diabetes should research and be aware of what the symptoms of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are and be aware of the steps to take to avoid or delay this disease.
About 200,000 women develop gestational diabetes each year in the United States. The statistics are that five to ten percent of women will continue with Type 2 diabetes after the birth of the baby. Twenty to fifty percent may develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Children of mothers with gestational diabetes are more at risk for obesity and developing diabetes as teens or adults.
Studies show that it is possible to reduce the risks by watching their diet. In fact, women who went on to control their weight, increase their exercise, and watch their diet and as a result had a 58 percent decrease in their risk for developing diabetes. Women in the 26-28 weeks of pregnancy are routinely checked for blood glucose levels. If a woman does develop gestational diabetes and it is not treated or controlled it may lead to difficulties and problems including, delayed maturity level, stillbirth, and poor placenta function.
Women who are already overweight when becoming pregnant, or had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy, have a greater chance of developing gestational diabetes. Other potential risk causes come from race, nationality, and cultural differences. Some of these causes could be related to economic differences and the difference in diets. The women found to be at a higher risk are American Indians, Asian Americans, African-Americans, Pacific islanders, and Hispanics. If you are pregnant your diet is important as is exercise, both for your health and the health of your baby.
Drinking plenty of water, with a diet high in fiber and low fats are necessary for a healthy diet. Refined sugar should be cut out if possible, if not, cut out as much as possible. Watch your fat intake also. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and low fat proteins. Also don't forget to be taking a pre-natal vitamin.
If you are already exercising when you become pregnant, it is important you remain active within the limits of what your body and doctor allow. Low impact exercising, yoga, or water aerobics are choices for those women who are not on a regular exercise program.
Also those women who do develop gestational diabetes have a much greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
Like with any other exercise regime, when you begin yoga, begin slowly at your own pace. Don’t push yourself too hard. If you find a pose difficult, maintain it for a shorter length of time. Increased flexibility and strength will come from practice. Monitor your blood glucose levels before and after any period of exercise. If you feel lightheaded, or experience any unexpected symptoms during exercise, stop to monitor your blood glucose and act accordingly.
Uddhiyana Banda: the stomach lift
Stand with your feet spaced shoulder width apart. Lean forward at your waist and place your hands on your knees. Inhale deeply by pushing your abdomen forwards, then exhale deeply by pulling your abdomen in. Pause for five to ten seconds. Inhale deeply by pushing your abdomen forwards, then exhale deeply by pulling your abdomen. During this pause, rapidly push your stomach in and out while you are not breathing. Repeat three or four times. Stand and resume normal breathing. This pose strengthens your abs, massages your organs, and assists your nervous system.
Yoga Mudrasana: the symbol of yoga
Sit up straight with your legs crossed. Clench your fists and place them on both sides of the abdomen, just below your bellybutton. While exhaling, bend forward as low as you can, pushing your fists against your abdomen. This pose is good for helping your nervous system and preventing possible complications of diabetes. This pose can be held for three minutes once you have had much practice. Begin by simply holding it for ten seconds, however.
Dhanurasana: the bow pose
Lie on your stomach. Lift your feet towards your knees, and reach back to grasp your ankles. Lifting your legs, chest, and head, arch your back into a bow. Hold for five seconds to begin, and work your way up to thirty seconds or more at later sessions. Repeat this action four or five times. Once you have mastered this pose, try rocking gently forwards and backwards, and from side to side. This pose massages your organs. This pose is of moderate difficulty.
Halasana: the plow pose
This pose is one of the most used yogic poses. It is complicated and so should not be attempted right away. Begin by lying on your back. Raise your feet to a ninety-degree angle to your body. If you are just beginning this pose, stop here, and hold your feet. If you are more advanced, lower your feet towards your head. Your pelvis will curl up and your lower back will lift from the floor. Touch your toes to the floor behind your head. If you cannot reach your toes to the floor, then simply hold the stretch where it is comfortable. Support your lower back with your hands if necessary. Once you no longer need to support your buttocks or lower back with your hands, place your hands on the ground beside your body. This pose can be held for around four minutes once you are an expert. In your early tries, begin with ten seconds or however long feels comfortable for you. This pose is not for any woman who is menstruating. This pose stretches the spine, and so helps the central nervous system. It is beneficial to all areas of the body.
At the end of any yoga practice, particularly if you are diabetic, it is important to do Savasana, the corpse pose. This is a pose of total relaxation. Lie on your back, with your eyes closed, your legs slightly spread, and your feet dropping to the sides, completely relaxed. Allow your arms to rest comfortable at your sides. Relax, simply focusing on your breathing for one to three minutes. This pose helps you focus after a yoga session and relax the muscles that you have worked.
The Sun Salutation is also recommended for diabetics. It is a series of yoga asanas. You can find many variations of the sun salutation. Try one that works best for you.
If you are uncertain about trying yoga, go to a gym or alternative medical practitioner to see if there are any yoga classes being offered in your area. There are often many classes, and you can probably go to the first class free. You can also join a pay-by-class gym where you can stop by if you want. Tell your instructor that you have diabetes, and your instructor will be able to assist you by teaching you the above poses, and by suggesting other poses such as Paschimottanasana, the sitting crane, Padangusthansana: the standing crane, Bhujangasana the serpent pose, Sarvangasana: the shoulder stand, Ardha-matsyendrasana: the spinal twist, Chakrasana: the wheel pose, and Shalabhasana the grasshopper pose. There are other poses that are beneficial to diabetics, or that will be able to help you prevent or manage any complications you might encounter.

Many Diabetic Kids feel isolated & lonely. Especially if they have very little interaction with other diabetics. Diabetes camp is an opportunity for them to meet other children just like themselves. Camp also teaches them valuable information about managing their disease. Many camps teach nutrition, how & when to test their blood properly, to give themselves injections or site changes. They also learn how food & excersize are linked with insulin. They learn independence in dealing with their disease. Some day your diabetic child will have to go into the big bad world by themselves. They will have to be able to take care of their own diabetes. Diabetes camp is a great way to give them the start they need to get ready for that time.
Besides it is just so much fun. I had a Diabetes Educator approach me about letting my daughter Ashley go to Diabetes Camp. This was about four years ago. I talked it over with Ashley & neither one of us were ready. I was not ready to leave her with strangers & trust them to manage her diabetes. Ashley did not feel comfortable being away from home for that amount of time. She knew she would be homesick. But, two years ago her attitude changed. She said she thought it would be fun to meet other kids like her. I had done some research on diabetes camps & was very impressed with what I was reading. I knew this would be a wonderful opportunity for her. So we decided the time had come for Ashley to take her first step of independence.
We sent a request to Gales Creek Diabetes Camp near Portland Oregon for more information. They sent us an applications with many forms that needed to be filled out. They needed personal & medical information on Ashley. There was a form for her doctor to fill out. They also had camperships available. This is like a scholorship. There are actually donors that contribute money to these camps to help people who can't afford to pay the $350 a week that it costs.
The camp is set up for Diabetic children. They have a wonderful staff. There is a doctor that is there at all times while camp is in session. There are also one or more Nutritionists & nurses. Many of the camp councelors are Diabetics. They go through specialized diabetes education training with doctor's & nurses. All councelors are over age 18 & many are former campers. They have set times for everyone to check their blood as well as councelors that do blood sugar tests in the middle of the night. All the food is healthy & carbs are counted.
They have activities set up to keep the kid's occupied at all times. They take hikes, play sports, swim every day, campfire activities, crafts, play games & all kinds of fun activities. Ashley loved it. She talked about her week at camp for months & couldn't wait until next year. She has now gone to two summers of camp. She talks about becoming a camp councelor.
I actually think Ashley would have done just fine at camp 4 years ago. I know that I am a very overprotective parent. I was one even before the diabetes but, after diagnosis I became so afraid to let her out of my site. But, they really do need that independence. It is so good for their self esteem & helps them to become self reliant. I definately would recomend Diabetes Camp for all Diabetic Children!!

I guess that there can not be anyone on the face of planet earth who is not aware that taking regular exercise is good for you. Walking, cycling and swimming would all rate pretty highly in a league table of activities that are good for you physically, and the fact that they are enjoyable to boot, is probably good for your mental wellbeing as well.
At the same time, you would actually have had to be living on a different planet for the last century or two to be ignorant of the fact that modern man and his mate are taking less and less exercise. More cars in the world equal less people walking, as a very simple example.
Now, throw into the mix the second factor, that the diet of people in the West is becoming ever more sugar and salt laden with each and every passing year, and we have an increasingly volatile and dangerous recipe for a cataclysmic meltdown of the human race in the not too distant future.
America is already seeing the results of this lethal combination of no exercise and poor quality food, usually eaten in quantities that can often border on the obscene. It sometimes seems that modern American society is predicated on the maxim that more is ALWAYS better, and to heck with the consequences!
The bare facts are both staggering and terrifying. Two-thirds of American adults are overweight, and half of these are clinically obese. Scientist’s estimate that perhaps 80% of the population should weigh less than they do.
Moreover, the obesity epidemic has hit the West (not only America, although the States is by far the worst offender) with astonishing speed. After millions of years and thousands of generations of human evolution, obesity has become widespread only in the past 50 years, and waistlines have literally ballooned in the past twenty years.
In 1980, 46 percent of U.S. adults were overweight; by 2000, the figure was 64. 5 percent: nearly a 1 percent annual increase in the ranks of the flabby. Extrapolating this pattern forward towards its most logical (and scariest) conclusion, by the year 2040, 100 percent of American adults will be overweight and "it may happen more quickly," says John Foreyt of Baylor College of Medicine. You read that right - 100% - in other words, everyone – every single man, woman and child in America will be overweight!
Already, children are amongst the biggest victims of the “fat explosion”!
Childhood obesity, once extremely rare, has mushroomed: 15 percent of children between ages six and 19 are now overweight and even 10 percent of those between two and five. "This may be the first generation of children who will die before their parents," Foreyt says.
And all of this after it has been scientifically proven time and again that excess weight vastly increases the chances of suffering and dying from heart disease, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and several types of cancer, plus suffering from arthritis, infertility, gallstones and asthma.
So, we cannot pretend that it is a pretty picture, but there are things that can be done. At the most basic level, the first step that anyone who is overweight or obese could take would be to eat less and exercise more.
The latter of these two actions is, in fact, or particular relevant to diabetes sufferers.
Whilst not suggesting that all diabetics are overweight or that everyone's diabetes is a result of carrying excessive personal "baggage", nevertheless, by following our earlier statistics for the population as a whole, we can reasonably assume that two thirds of diabetes sufferers in the USA will be overweight.
And whilst research has repeatedly shown that regular physical activity helps physical and mental health for everyone, repeated doses of exercise will especially benefit diabetes sufferers, as it can help to significantly reduce blood glucose levels as well.
This is, of course, great news for people with Type II diabetes, because test have indicated that insulin sensitivity may well be improved by exercise, whilst at the same time helping to lower elevated blood glucose levels back down into an acceptable range.
Here's why. When anyone takes exercise, their body uses up more oxygen, as much as 20 times more (and even more in the muscles that are actually doing the work) than when you are at rest. So the muscles use more glucose to meet their increased energy needs.
At the same time, exercise improves the action of insulin in the peripheral muscles, making it more efficient, so you get more out of the insulin your body is producing. In older people with diabetes, the decrease in insulin sensitivity that is a part of the ageing is also partially due to a lack of physical activity. So, regular exercise benefits you now, and will continue to do so for many years to come.
However unappealing "working out" may seem, especially if you have not been a regular exerciser for some time, the truth is that exercise, in combination with a healthy diet (eating less, or maybe, more accurately, a lot less), is one of the best things you can do to take care of yourself if you have diabetes.
In conclusion, for sufferers of Type 11 diabetes, exercise will:
*By definition, help to burn off those excess calories, helping you to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight *Assist your body's response to insulin and help to control blood glucose levels. *Lower blood glucose and possibly reduce the amount of medication you need to treat diabetes. *Improve your circulation, drop the levels of "bad" cholesterol and aid your body’s ability to deal with and, hopefully, lower high blood pressure.
All in all, a sensible regimen of regular exercise is good for anyone and everyone, but diabetes sufferers (particularly those who could do with shedding a pound or two) stand to benefit more than most!
