Controlling Diabetes with Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Having diabetes means a lifetime of maintaining their diabetes and the blood sugar and controlling their glucose levels. The blood sugar level shows of how much glucose, which is a basic sugar, is found in the bloodstream. Glucose, in one form or another, is in many of the foods that we eat, so diet is a very important part of controlling the glucose levels in your bloodstream.

To check your blood sugar levels, the most commonly used method of obtaining a blood sample is to prick the finger.

Diet and exercise are also key factors in controlling diabetes, in fact some doctors say that diet alone can control type 2 diabetes. The diabetic will be given dietary guidelines by their medical practitioner no matter what type of diabetes you have. It is suggested that diabetics pay rigorous attention to their diet and self-monitoring activities to establish which foods cause the worst glucose-level peaks and troughs, then make "self adjustments".

However, the best way of controlling diabetes, and the only way for those with type 1 diabetes, is for patients to test their glucose levels regularly - as instructed by their doctor - and to take the appropriate levels of medication or injection of insulin. Since a diabetics body either doesn't produce insulin, as in Type 1 diabetes, or cannot process the insulin that it makes, which is found in Type 2 diabetes, these blood sugar levels can vary much more then those of a person in perfect health.

Diabetics afflicted with type 1 diabetes should be checking their blood sugar levels daily before eating. The number of tests each day should a minimum of 2 times per day, but some patients may need as many as 6 tests in a day. These tests help determine how much insulin needs to be taken into the body to help process the glucose.

Type 2 diabetics are able to control their diabetes with drugs and dieting. However they too need to be monitoring their blood sugar levels a few times a week. This should be done immediately after eating a meal or up to 90 minutes after eating. In addition, it is a good idea to check your levels before every meal around one day a month to see exactly how your body interacts with the food that you eat.

You then take the blood that is released and put it onto a testing strip, which comes with blood sugar level testing kits. This strip is then put into a measuring device, and processed for around 30 seconds before a result is achieved.

But there is some good news!

Lots of research is on going and a new gadget is now available that checks a diabetic's blood sugar and lets them know if it falls to a dangerous low. Researchers have been searching for the gadget for years. Monitoring devices are now coming on the market and by late summer will be available in the United States.

These monitors are not as accurate as "normal" blood tests, finger lances, but researchers are hoping that within a couple of years it will allow a diabetic to forgo putting their finger to test for blood glucose levels. If the monitor signals that blood sugar levels are low, it is necessary to take a blood test for confirmation. The monitors are also slow to show rapid changes that occur, especially when you exercise. This monitor is working to make finger lances outdated for all diabetics.

Those who have used the monitors report little discomfort. A patch worn on the abdomen may hurt when it goes on because there is a tiny wire placed under the skin to measure the glucose in cell fluid. Once the patch is on, it is comfortable to wear and sends information to a receiver. The receiver is about the size of a cell phone. A patch can be worn for several days before changing.

Researchers are working toward pairing the new monitoring device to insulin pumps. These pumps have been on the market for years and could reduce the time needed for controlling diabetes to a minimum. One such product has already been approved in April and is now offered for sale now. The monitoring portion of the device will not be available until later this summer, so it isn't fully automatic yet, but it is promising news for those who are trying to control Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Another new treatment going through trials is the delivery of insulin through inhalation. The insulin is prepared in a dry micro fine powder form which is inhaled directly into the lungs from where it is absorbed into the blood stream.

And, of course, much more research is on going.

Juvenile Diabetes - Serious?

Although the increase in obesity, due to a poor diet and lack of exercise, in children is beginning to increase the incidence of these overweight children developing type 2 diabetes, it is usually type 1 diabetes that develops in juveniles. As with many of the common diseases of the endocrine system, an auto-immune problem is the root cause of type 1 diabetes, the body's natural defences begin to attack the bodies tissues rather than the invaders they are designed to destroy, as they were designed to. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the valuable beta cells within the pancreas that are responsible for the production and release of insulin.

Without beta cells there can be no naturally produced insulin and glucose levels rapidly escalate to dangerous levels.

After having undiagnosed diabetes for years the beta cells that create insulin are damaged beyond repair. The body then stops producing insulin, and the diabetic is forced to rely completely on an outside insulin source.

Diabetes is still associated with overweight, middle aged individuals who are deemed to be paying the price for earlier life excesses. No-one expects their child to develop this disease, however it does occur. Unfortunately, early symptoms are subtle and very easy to attribute to other childhood illnesses, conditions and ways of being:

• A sudden weight loss

• Drowsiness and lack of energy, unless excessive, may not be noticed or remarked upon. Many children now lead very sedentary lifestyles and lethargy may simply not be noticed.

• Extreme thirst - is not unusual in children, especially in warm weather. Also, once children are old enough and tall enough to reach the refrigerator door it can be difficult to monitor their fluid intake.

• Frequent urination - this may become apparent to parents if travelling with children, but just around the home it can be difficult to spot as children simply take themselves to the bathroom.

• Vision changes - they should not be attributed to too much time in front of the television or computer screen.

• Sweet smelling breath may be noticed by parents and may equally well be attributed to something the child has eaten.

• Increased appetites may be remarked upon, but of course children are growing and can have large appetites - why would a parent necessarily consider this to be a bad thing?

• Heavy, laboured breathing is another symptom which can be masked by any number of respiratory problems which seem to be more prevalent in children nowadays.

If diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, there are a host of issues that a person needs to address.

Blood glucose levels need to be monitored as often as 6 times per day with a prick of the finger or another source of blood.

• If the levels are too high, diabetes patients face the problem of a hyperglycemic reaction.

• Consequently, if blood glucose levels are too low, the patient runs the risk of a hypoglycemic reaction.

For this reason, in addition to monitoring the levels, diabetes sufferers need to maintain their glucose through injections of insulin, a proper diet, and exercise. Low blood glucose levels can be heightened by eating something with sugar. Soda and fruit juice are two commonly used remedies for a low glucose level.

If the glucose in the bloodstream is too high, more specific actions need to be taken and may even involve a trip to the hospital.

High glucose levels can cause a poisoning of the blood that can be fatal if unaddressed.

Diabetes Doesn't Mean An End To Traveling

You've been diagnosed with diabetes and you're stuck at home right? Fortunately, diabetes does not mean what it once did and current research and break through's mean that things are continuing to improve as you read this. Vacations, airline travel, cruises, and long drives to a vacation destination are all possible. It takes some planning and some extra work, but you can do it.

From this symptom list, it becomes apparent how important it is for parents to be watchful of the childeren.

All parents should make themselves aware of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes so they can respond quickly in the event that their child develops this disease. The earlier treatment is sought, the less damage is done.

You need to plan for them and prepare for possible emergency, allowing for a safe and enjoyable vacation for you.

• Consult with your doctor and your medical support team about changing insulin doses and an extra prescription for insulin.

• Carry a snacks and juices and plenty of water wherever you go. This will help if you need something quick to bring up sugar levels. Keep extra diabetes supplies in the same pack. If you keep everything together, they will be handy when the need arises.

• Be sure to pack extra supplies in a hand bag or purse, it's a good idea to even pack your diabetes and extras in several bags.

• Always wear your medical alert bracelet and any other medical information that might be needed.

• Your friends and families should know the route you are traveling.

• Making reservations for busy restaurants may help you avoid long waits. They also may be able to provide you with nutritional information about menu selections.

• Remember that any change in physical activity, even packing or loading up the car, can cause blood glucose levels to swing high or low.

• Insulin should not be allowed to freeze and must be kept out of direct sunlight, as should all supplies, sunlight can affect test results. Ice packs can be used to keep insulin chilled.

• And lastly, can't say this often enough, always have plenty of extra insulin and food for any unforeseen moments on any excursion.

The Transportation Security Administration section of the Department of Homeland Security has many good tips on flying when you have diabetes. If you need further information from them, you can call them at (866) 289-9673.

Going to a theme park or water park? Be safe and keep your insulin supplies in a waterproof bag to avoid water damage.

When traveling in a boat, the diabetic should be aware of any seasickness they may suffer from. The main problem of the dependent insulin diabetic patient is that seasickness can upset their diabetic condition and cause them to have problems. Will you be flying? If you happen to have an insulin pump, ask them to do a visual inspection of your insulin pump and do a physical pat down. If you go through the metal detector, you will set it off. Most should know what an insulin pump is but it doesn't hurt to remind them. If they ask you to remove your pump, remind them that it is a needle under your skin.

Once you have had your supplies screened, the following are diabetic supplies that can be carried onboard with you.

- Glucagon emergency kit

- Urine ketone test strips

- A disposal container or something similar and an unlimited supply of used syringes and testing strips

- Insulin pump and supplies including all supplies needed for cleaning, extra plastic tubing, infusion kits, batteries, catheter, and needles

- Insulin dispensing products, including vials, pens, jet injectors, infusers, and any preloaded syringes as well as insulin

- Lancets, testing strips, glucose meters, alcohol swabs, and any other meter-testing supplies

- Unlimited number of unused syringes as long as they are with your insulin or other medication that is injected.

Remember when flying; don't check all of your diabetic supplies. If you have watched the news, you know there is many bags lost each year.

Checking your blood sugar more often during time away from home is best. It is recommended you check at least six times a day to avoid any problems. Be prepared for changing blood sugar levels because of heat, excitement, and schedule changes. It is also recommended is to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day and more if you are more active than usual. You should drink the same amount of water even if you are visiting a beach or a pool.

The insulin pump is becoming more popular. It can give you the flexibility of vacation schedules without worrying about injections. The pump is more popular, especially for children with diabetes. As new technology makes these pumps even better, more children and adults will have the freedom to travel.

Diabetes Facts

Diabetes is a medical condition in which patients will suffer from high levels of blood sugar. Because of this, they will not secrete the correct amount of the hormone insulin. There are three forms of diabetes, and these are gestational diabetes, type 1, and type 2. About 10% of all cases are Type 1, while 90% of cases are type 2. In type 1 diabetes, the islets of Langerhans will be destroyed, and this will stop the body from producing the necessary amount of insulin. Type 1 can only be treated by injecting insulin directly into the body. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the cells in the body becoming less sensitive to insulin.

Gestational diabetes may occur in women who are pregnant. It functions in a manner that is similar to Type 2, and a large percentage of women who get it will also develop type 2 diabetes. Insulin was first discovered in 1921, and has allowed doctors to treat the disease. It is a chronic ailment, and it has a number of complications over a long period of time. Patients who have diabetes are also at risk for renal failure, cardiovascular disease, and nerve damage. Many of these problems are rare in people who have blood sugar levels that are balanced.

There has been some concern that glucosamine might cause insulin resistance and that people with diabetes should not take glucosamine. This concern is because of previous animal and human studies that found “giving glucosamine can impair insulin’s action, which can potentially make [people] diabetic or worsen diabetes.” This is according to Rajaram J. Karne, now of the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

Insulin is the main hormone that is responsible for the maintenance of glucose. When there is not a sufficient amount of insulin in the body, diabetes will often develop. When carbohydrates are introduced into the body, they will often be transformed into glucose, and this is the primary carbohydrate in the blood. Insulin is important because it will allow the various cells in the body to use glucose as a form of fuel or storage. In addition to this, glucose is responsible for transforming glucose into glycogen. Once the insulin levels begin to drop, glycogen will begin transforming back into glucose.

Many doctors work hard to educate patients on the different things they can do to keep their blood sugar levels balanced. Patients need to avoid smoking, high levels of cholesterol, and obesity. These are things that can make diabetes worse. Diabetes is a condition that was first observed thousands of years ago. However, effective treatments for the condition were first created in the 20th century. It was discovered that the pancrease plays an important role in the development of this condition. It was Grant Banting and Charles Herbert Best who first demonstrated that this disease could be treated by using insulin, and Grant Banting would go on to receive the Nobel Prize for this achievement.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes appear to be partly hereditary, but most people get this disease as a result of environmental issues. Type 2 has a much stronger genetic link, and people who have relatives with type 2 diabetes are likely to develop it themselves. There are a number of symptoms that are involved with this condition. Patients will often urinate frequently and have increased amounts of thirst. Their vision may also become blurred as well. Diabetes is a chronic ailment which requires both short and long term care. Patients must learn how to keep their blood sugar levels balanced.

Does Glucosamine Cause Diabetes?

Glucosamine supplements are a popular remedy for arthritis pain relief, especially for osteoarthritis. Unlike NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatory drugs, the pain relief provided by glucosamine lasts even after a person is no longer taking the supplements. This is because glucosamine helps repair damaged cartilage in joints. Arthritis pain goes away because the problem is fixed, not because inflammation is temporarily suppressed.

However, the studies that raised this concern injected participants with high doses of glucosamine. Most people take glucosamine orally, not by injection.Karne and his collaborators in Bethesda, Md, at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, tested a commonly used dose of oral glucosamine in 20 normal weight and obese adults. The dose they tested was three 500-milligram pills of glucosamine daily or a placebo.

Unlike the high doses of injected glucosamine used in previous studies, this oral dose of glucosamine is what is normally recommended by health care professionals and what is most commonly used by folks taking glucosamine supplements.

Karne and his colleagues tested each person’s insulin sensitivity and the beginning and end of the study. Six weeks of glucosamine didn’t make any measurable difference in insulin’s action.

This study indicates that at least in adults who don’t already have diabetes, three 500-milligram glucosamine pills does not effect insulin resistance or cause diabetes. This dose should be safe for those taking it for osteoarthritis pain relief.
