Diabetes Is A Pain In The Foot!

Now, those of you that are already diabetic should know that you need to take extra special care of yourselves. But for those that aren't aware or need reminding:

To look after your feet properly the first thing to remember is to buy shoes that will not hurt your feet.

Feet

When a person has diabetes, it is more likely that they will have problems with their feet, this is a cause of poor blood circulation in the capillaries and damage to nerve endings. This mostly causes you to be unaware of any pain in your foot that can lead to further problems. So make sure that you follow the following "rules".

Another important thing is to go to your doctors surgery frequently to get your feet checked for reflexes and movement and they can also then be checked for condition and you can be advised for further treatment if there is a problem. But one of the simplest things that you can do is just to have a look at the bottom of your feet every day to check for infections and also to never walk anywhere barefoot.

I would also recommend regular pedicures to keep your feet in tip-top condition. This needn't be professional although that would be great. In fact, you can create your own at home pedicure very simply. Firstly, I would buy a foot scrub/file which will remove any excess skin that has built up on the bottoms of your feet. After using this to remove most of the dead skin, put your feet in a tub of warm water (or have a nice relaxing bath) to soften your feet. Then after relaxing for 10-20 mins, pat your feet dry with a towel and find a moisturiser. Be sure to use an intense moisturiser and apply lots.

After rubbing moisturiser into your feet for 5 mins minimum put on some clean socks or buy some moisturising socks from Body Shop or your local beauty salon. I would recommend going to sleep with these on so that your feet can absorb as much moisture as they need. When you wake up in the morning change your socks and then you are good to go. I would recommend doing this as frequently as you can as this is great for your feet.

Depression Link to Diabetes

Diabetes is now a disease that affects people not just North America wide, but worldwide. Many complications come with diabetes. Blindness, cardiovascular disease and kidney problems can all result from diabetes. Amputation of limbs may be a necessary result of diabetes is extreme cases. Studies have also linked early life depression as a contributor to adult diabetes.

Depression can lead to problems such as weight gain, poor eating habits, and decreased motivation for exercise.

Understanding why depression can lead to diabetes and other problems is important, as lifestyle changes are part of the solution in dealing with diabetes. Eating healthy foods, monitoring body weight closely and getting adequate exercise are treatments for both diabetes and depression. Both may also require the use of medication in a comprehensive treatment plan.

Children and teenagers diagnosed with depression when they are young, typically become overweight as adults. Being overweight often leads to diabetes as an adult. Early prevention for adult diabetes involves monitoring and controlling for being overweight as a teenager and beyond. Research indicates that there is also a link between women with depression and anxiety disorder and an inflated body mass index (BMI) as compared to similar women that do not suffer from depression. This appears to be more typical for women than with men.

Patients treated for diabetes and depression often show no improvement. This is usually due to little or no change in diet and exercise improvements. These lifestyle changes can dramatically improve the symptoms of diabetes and depression. Diabetic patients that suffer from depression have twice the mortality rate of those who do not suffer from depression. The complications are numberous and include: heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney and teeth and gum disease. Over 21 million Americans are noted as suffering with mostly Type 2 diabetes, directly resulting from obesity.

Diabetics with depression often take poor care of their health and are prone to smoke, drink alcohol, be overweight, not exercise and eat poorly. As the body’s cells gradually loose sensitivity to insulin, blood sugar levels need to be controlled. Failure to do so can lead to early death. A recent clinical study shows that elderly patients with diabetes may respond positively to clinical intervention programs. Depressed diabetic patients are now believed to be hopeful candidates for successful clinical intervention programs.

Early warning signs for diabetes involve childhood depression and anxiety disorder. Healthy eating, proper nutrition and regular sleep will help to prevent and fight against diabetes. Reducing the consumption of refined sugars and having a fiber rich diet are important parts of healthy eating. It is important to be focused on the point that fighting diabetes and depression can be done using the same methods.

Detecting Diabetes and Caring For It

One of the best things you can do for your health is to know how to detect diabetes before it becomes an even bigger problem in your life by not taking care of it. Believe it or not there are quite a few people out there who don’t exactly know what diabetes is. Diabetes is a disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or elevated blood glucose (blood sugar). When the amount of sugar in our blood runs too low or too high it is quite typical for anyone to not feel very well. Diabetes is a term generally used when speaking of a person who has a blood sugar level that is consistently high. Millions of Americans have diabetes; however most of them do not realize it. In the long term diabetes can cause complications concerning the kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves and blood vessels.

There are two types of diabetes; Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes (insulin deficiency) means there is not enough insulin being produced.

Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance) occurs when there is plenty of insulin being produced but cells in our bodies are very resistant to it’s action, which in turn causes your blood sugar to consistently be high.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia, otherwise known as diabetes, would be frequently hungry, frequently thirsty and frequently urinating. Apart from those symptoms other symptoms that may occur are fatigue, weight loss, blurred vision, wounds healing more slowly, dry mouth, impotence, dry/itchy skin and recurrent infections.

Even though diabetes may sound like a horrible disease it can be easy to live with. The key to doing that is to take care of yourself. Many people do not take care of themselves because they refuse to admit there is something wrong with them health wise. They won’t even admit it to themselves. So, what happens when they do this? They try to survive without taking medication(s) they need or doing anything in their life to help keep their bodies healthy. Don’t do this. The only thing it can lead to is an unhealthy body, physically and mentally, and possibly depression in the long run.

If you wish to watch your blood sugar, whether you are diabetic or not, there are many things you can do at home. Purchase a blood glucose monitor. This can easily be purchased at your local pharmacy or online. There are websites that will tell you how high and or low your blood glucose level should be, though your blood glucose monitor should come with an instruction manual which supplies this information as well. One of the best things a diabetic can do is exercise and eat properly.

Not only does exercise help to keep your body in good condition on the outside but it helps on the inside as well. However, if you are a diabetic do not do anything involving weight training. Studies suggest that this can affect your blood glucose level by increasing it.

Complications of Diabetes

If you have diabetes or have recenty been diagnosed, you have a lot to come to terms with. Not only do you need to manage your blood sugar levels all the time, you need to be concerned about long-term complications of diabetes. Hopefully with continued medical research, there will a cure for diabetes in your life time. But until the cure comes, you need to be aware of certain complications and what you can do to avoid them.

1. Diabetic retinopathy. This is a microvascular disease that affects the tiny blood vessels in the back of your eyes. High blood sugar over many years weaken the walls of the blood vessels and some blood and fluid leaks out. Nearly every person with type 1 diabetes will have some level of retinopathy within 20 years of their diagnosis, whereas 1/4 of those type 2 diabetes will have it within 2 years of their diagnosis. The best way to prevent diabetic retinopathy is by maintaining normal blood sugar levels.

2. Kidney Disease. This is also a microvascular disease that affects small blood vessels. Exposure to high levels of glucose over the years can create complicated changes that can allow protein molecules to escape, spilling it in the urine. If you have diabetic retinopathy or high blood pressure, you are more likely to have kidney disease. The best way way to prevent or slow down the progression of kidney disease is by managing your blood glucose levels and your blood sugar. You must also follow a low protein diet.

3. Diabetic Neuropathy. This is a nerve disorder in which the nerves become damaged. It can affect many body systems, including your feet, legs, hands, urinary tract, digestive tract and sexual organs. This is one of the most common complications of any type of diabetes. Neuropathy is the reason for 87% of the amputations in the United States every year. You should have regular check-ups with your medical doctor. He or she should be testing for reflexes, eyeball motion, sensation in your feet legs etc.

4. Heart Disease. This refers to the diseases of the heart. Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is too weak to pump blood throughout your body at the rate it should. It does not mean that your heart completely stops. Coronary heart disease is the most common form of heart disease. It occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged by cholesterol and other fat deposits and can't supply enough blood to the heart. In a survey by the American Diabetes Association, it was discovered that 68% of those with diabetes had no idea that they had an increase risk for heart disease.

5. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). This is the disease of the arteries within your entire body. For example, a stroke or problems with the arteries in your leg would be a cardiovascular disease. The risk factors for CVD is obesity, hypertension, high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol levls and lack of physical exercise.

Diet, exercise and maintaining normal blood sugar levels are key to preventing or prolonging the onset of these complications.

The Cure for Diabetes, Really!

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system begins destroying normal, healthy cells. The immune system is a part of the body that normally protects us from disease by attaching germs like viruses and bacteria, and for some unknown reason, just starts attacking normal cells. Among the cells that are destroyed are the beta cells that make insulin in the pancreas. As the beta cells are attacked, they are unable to produce insulin. A person with this type of diabetes must take insulin several times per day and constantly monitor his/her blood sugar levels.

This will cause you a great deal of pain and can also lead to permanent reshaping of your feet. Also, it is important to make sure that the shoes fit well so that there is no problem with air getting to your feet, so that your feet will stay at a perfect temperature. This is also why it is important to wear socks or tights with your shoes also.

Dr. Denise Faustman of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston had found a way to cure Type 1 diabetes, at least in mice.

Her research involves injecting mice with a substance called Freund’s Complete Adjuvant—which is a mixture of water, oil and parts of dead tuberculosis bacteria. This mixture then over stimulates the immune system cells that are attaching the pancreas, making those white blood cells self-destruct, stopping the bodies attach on the beta cells in the pancreas. The pancreas then cures itself.

Her studies indicate that even a mouse that has had diabetes for a long time still has the capacity to develop new beta cells in the pancreas.

Faustman recently attracted the attention of Lee Iococca who recently raised $11 million for her medical center for further studies of her discovery on humans. Iococca’s wife died of Type 1 diabetes.

Although Faustman has not started testing her discovery in humans yet, she has had a 67% cure rate in her experiments. This is great news for the millions of people afflicted with Type 1 diabetes. Imagine the millions of lives that could be greatly affected by Faustman’s research.
