Bring An End To Depression

Everybody gets the blues once in a while. It's normal to feel sad on a rainy day, get sentimental over a lost love, or feel so terribly lonely during really low moments of your life.

But once depression gets out of hand, it can wreak havoc on your mental state and drive you to such emotional lows - to the point that you might seriously choose ending your life. So if you think you're experiencing extreme emotional lows, then you'd better do something about it.

These are some of the most common symptoms of depression.

What are the signs of depression?

1. Feeling sad without any apparent reason.

2. Getting mad at anything, everything, anyone, and everyone around you.

3. Thinking that your life is getting nowhere.

4. Feeling that whatever you do is not enough.

5. Feeling that you're not good enough for anything.

6. Always feeling tired.

7. Feeling that there is no more hope for whatever troubles you.

8. Feeling that you don't deserve to live in this world anymore.

Recognizing these telltale signs can help lead you to take action before it becomes more serious. Knowing the root cause of these symptoms further boosts the chance of recovery.

Whatever the reason behind depression, it is always related to your state of mind, environment, and/or present circumstance. You may feel low if you are facing issues on work, marriage, or your financial status. The process of resolving these issues, however important, will inevitably result in stress and/or body aches. Emotional pain coupled with physical ills can really affect the way you view your life.

Another cause of depression is bad experiences: the death of someone important, loss of something significant, or similar unpleasant experiences that would haunt you for a long time. This could mean a humiliating event at your workplace or school, traumatic environment at home, etc.

The best way to treat depression is to think positively. Thinking negatively about an already gloomy situation would only aggravate your mental state. It's not the end of the world, and there's a solution to every problem, yours included. Moping and sulking about it won't do any good.

Unfortunately, not all people see it that way. This is when depression starts to settle in. You think you're the unluckiest person alive. No one is there when you need help the most. It's better to die than suffer all the injustice being delivered to you.

Going to a psychiatrist to ask for help is one step toward finding the cure for depression. Various drugs can help you cope. However, these medications treat not the actual cause of depression, but only the symptoms. Complete recovery rests solely on your ability to have a positive outlook in life. Admittedly, this is easier said than done, so going to a psychiatrist doesn't immediately mean that you're going to ask medication for your depression. You could also ask your psychiatrist for help in developing a positive outlook and in controlling your depressive mood swings.

Depression is a serious matter. It causes emotional and mental breakdown, and it can result to suicide if left untreated. This is why depression should be diagnosed immediately. It is not a disorder that is easy to cure; but always remember: you're not alone in the world. Even if you live your life as a recluse, there's at least one person out there who cares for you and would be devastated if you allow yourself to lose the battle. You're a strong person. You're not alone. Keep your loved ones close to you and you will feel invincible.

5 Facts You Need To Know About Depression

Around 18 million US citizens suffer from stress, depression and anxiety every year and for many of them, understanding why they endure the torment is difficult to establish. This is because of the many "magic bullet myths" associated with these problems. Here are five such myths along with the root cause as to why stress, anxiety and depression arise.

2. Nutritionally deficient diet, either not eating enough fresh food or eating way too much junk food. There are many people throughout the world who don't eat a good diet. Most of our forefathers would've struggled to eat the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Does this mean all of these people suffered from stress, depression or anxiety?

Highly unlikely. And I know people whose diet is largely junk and they don't suffer from stress, depression or anxiety. Also, does it mean that everybody who eats a nutritionally sound diet won't suffer from these problems?

Again, and I include myself in this, there are people who eat a balanced, nutritionally sound diet but suffer from stress, depression or anxiety. Why?

3. Toxins. The premise here is that as our air is polluted, containing harmful, poisonous or toxic chemicals, the air we breathe is causing more and more people to enter into stressful or depressive episodes. If that is the case, then everybody who lives in a modern city - New York, LA, Tokyo, Athens, Paris, London, Mexico City, Rome, Berlin, Chicago, Moscow, etc. - must all be enduring the misery of mental torment because each of them breathe the same polluted air. Is this so?

Of course not. And by the same rule, does it mean that if you live outside polluted cities, in coastal towns or villages in the beautiful countryside etc. - then you're immune from mental trauma?

Certainly it does not.

4. Trauma. This means that if you encounter a traumatic event, say death of a loved one, or moving home or relationship breakdown for example, such an event can cause stress, depression or anxiety. But such events happen to every human being and not all of them become depressed. This means that events cannot cause these problems, but the way we respond to them can.

5. Genetics. If your parents suffered these problems, you will too. This does hold a little truth. Because while there is no genetic link to these problems, you can learn the modes of behavior that cause these problems from parents throughout childhood. So, if your parents reacted to events in their lives in ways that caused them to be stressed, depressed or anxious, you will learn them too. The good news is that just as you learned them you can unlearn them.

The problem with all of the above is that they shift focus from outside yourself to try and find a "magic bullet" (drugs, diet, events, genetics, toxins) when the answer to them lies within yourself. None of the above can cause depression and therefore, you cannot find a cure by addressing them. Curing stress, depression and anxiety can only be done by treating the root cause and that root cause lies in the way you make sense out of everything in your life.

Once the root cause has been successfully addressed using a combination of knowledge, understanding and personal skills, stress, depression and anxiety will never cause you anguish ever again.

Looking For Depression Support Groups

For those who face depression, every day of their lives may seem like a struggle. A struggle to get up, a struggle to face the day and the people involved and it can be a struggle to make the most of the day. It just seems simpler to crawl back into bed and forget about it all. But, the world needs us, we need the world too. So, we get up and deal with the depression. But, there may be a way or a place in which the depression you feel is similar to the depression that others feel and are dealing with as well.

1. Chemical imbalances within the brain. This is a theory with no proven clinical evidence to support it. The theory alleges that low levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain cause people to suffer from anxiety, stress or depression. Drug therapy is used to treat the imbalance. But there is no test to establish levels of these chemicals before patients are prescribed drugs and therefore, no way of knowing which chemicals are depleted and which ones aren't. So there's no way of measuring success either. Another issue: Over seventy percent of people who stop taking antidepressants enter into second and further episodes of stress, anxiety or depression. For another one third, they are totally ineffective. But if chemical imbalances haven't been proven to cause these problems, why are they being treated?

A depression support group can be a great way to see that your situation is not the only one out there. By talking with others who are dealing with depression, you will be able to understand yourself a little better. Maybe they can offer advice on making the day easier or happier. Maybe they can offer an understanding that comes with friendship. By meeting with others in a group setting, you may be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

While it may never cure your depression, simply adding the time to your day to talk about depression with people who understand can be a cure for your aching heart. If you would like more information on finding these support groups or dealing with depression in general, you can find them by visiting a site like www.avoiddepression.com . While it's not a medical website, it will help you in understanding with what is going on and how to help yourself with your depression.

A Guide to Omega 3 Depression

Can fish oil control depression?

The omega 3 depression research consists of clinical trials with patients suffering from bi-polar disorder, post-partum depression and mild to moderate depression. The omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are generally used together in these studies, but sometimes only one or the other is used. These trials and studies attempt to answer the question: can fish oil control depression?

Omega 3 depression researchers use fish oil specifically because it is the best and most common source of DHA and EPA. Omega 3 research on depression varies in methodology. One study at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine assessed the effectiveness of omega 3 dosages ranging from a half gram per day to 2.8 grams per day on women suffering from post-partum depression. The sample size was small and no placebo group was used. Doctors used two tests to measure degree of depression before and after omega 3 supplementation. The before and after results of this omega 3 depression study showed a decrease of 48-51% in degree of depression.

This also goes to show why people who pursue healthy diets tend to have such a positive outlook and outstanding mental health -- it's the foods. Because food greatly affects your mental state, if you eat healing foods, and foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, then you're going to have healthier mental function and will rarely experience depression, especially if you combine these foods with natural sunlight. But if you eat processed foods and manufactured foods, as are generally consumed by most Americans, then of course you're going to be depressed, because you're not giving your brain the nutrients it needs to achieve a healthy mental state.

The answer to the question: can fish oil control depression, based on this study, was that "results support further study of omega 3 fatty acids as a treatment for post-partum depression".

An omega 3 depression study in London concluded that EPA was an effective treatment for bi-polar disorder. Because of the link between depression and chronic fatigue syndrome, the effectiveness of omega 3's in treating this syndrome has been studied and concluded that patients responded favorably.

Another omega 3 depression study was actually a study that involved studying other studes (sounds confusing, but this is actually often done), and concluded that it is likely that low levels of omega 3 fatty acids in the bloodstream are linked and may, in some cases, be the cause of depression. Can fish oil control depression? Very possibly.

In general, many studies report an improvement in symptoms related to depression after supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids. Keep in mind, no one is suggesting that anyone stop taking their anti-depressant medications. Only that adding a dietary supplement of omega 3 fish oil may help relieve some symptoms, may improve mood.

Depression and mental disorders can be prevented and treated with simple healing foods

A study published last year in the journal Biological Psychiatry shows that certain foods are better at treating depression than antidepressant drugs. The study found that omega-3 fatty acids and foods high in a compound called uridine were able to reduce the symptoms of depression as well as or better than three different antidepressant drugs that were tested. This research was conducted at the McLean Hospital, which is affiliated with Harvard.

It's very exciting to see this kind of study, because it shows yet more scientific evidence for the healing effects of food as well as the relative uselessness of prescription drugs.

Based on the results of this study, it seems silly that anyone would continue to use antidepressant drugs to try to treat depression when there are simple healing foods available that do a better job. This is especially true when considering the potentially dangerous side effects of antidepressant drugs that are now coming to light, including increased risk of suicide, violent behavior, and other similar acts of aggression.

But what healing foods in particular are we talking about in this study?

In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids, there are health enhancing substances found in walnuts, molasses, and fish, according to researchers. They're also found in many other foods. It's especially interesting to note that molasses is included in this list, because molasses is produced as a waste product from the sugar refining industry. When you refine sugar beets or whole grains in order to make refined white sugar or white flour, you remove as much as 98% of the nutrition from those natural foods, leaving only a white, super sweet, highly concentrated refined sugar, and that's what ultimately gets fed to human beings.

The waste product from this process is a thick, brown, syrupy liquid -- that's molasses. Molasses contains most of the nutrition of the original food, including the vitamins, minerals, and various compounds such as uridine. It is this molasses that's normally sent off to be used in livestock feed, and yet what we're finding here with this research is that this molasses can help prevent depression. Eating molasses is part of a food strategy that's just as good as antidepressant drugs.

So it is in fact the food supply that is causing depression in this country. It's all the refined ingredients that have their nutrition stripped away. That's what's causing depression. But what do we do in this country to treat depression?

We come up with new drugs like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft, and we give those to people and charge them sometimes thousands of dollars a year to stay on these drugs. They don't need these drugs -- what they really need are healing foods. They need to go to the grocery store, shop for some healthy foods like wheat germ, molasses, avocados, and so on, and eat those foods in order to have healthy brain balance and avoid depression. It's really not that difficult.

What else is exciting here is that we're seeing yet more benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. These omega-3 oils are almost miracle-class healing nutrients. They enhance heart health, they reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, they boost brain function and nerve system function, and now we're seeing they even function as effective antidepressants. Clearly, omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most exciting nutrients in foods that are available to American consumers, and you can get these in everyday foods, or as nutritional supplements in things like salmon oil or flax seed oil. You can also eat chia seeds if you'd like to get some good, healthy omega-3s. This is the first time we've seen a study that really explores the degree of the healing impact of these particular foods. Why is it that we live in a nation with health care priorities that cause us to spend billions of dollars testing antidepressant drugs and synthetic chemicals, but yet we will spend very little money on testing the healing qualities of natural foods and nutritional supplements?

Clearly we have our priorities backwards, because it turns out that the answer to depression is readily available to every American consumer, right in their grocery store, right now. You can literally walk into your grocery store and find cures for depression, cures for early stage cancer, cures for diabetes, and cures for heart disease. There are cures right there in every grocery store, available right now.

So the answers for these diseases are really right in front of us, every single day. And if you're willing to take one step further and actually visit a health food store or a natural grocery store, then you can find even more healing foods. You can bring in even better nutrition and more potent phytochemicals for preventing these chronic diseases.

It's really no big mystery -- what we need to do as a nation is simply get back to our healing foods as they come out of the ground, as they are provided by Mother Nature. We need to recognize the disease-promoting problems with processed and manufactured foods, everything from carbonated soft drinks to packaged instant rice products. And we need to be honest and say, look, these are the foods that are causing disease in this country, and that if we are going to be a disease-free nation, we've got to stop trying to find new synthetic chemicals to mask symptoms of disease, and stop poisoning ourselves with the food supply. We've got to ban toxic ingredients like hydrogenated oils. They should have no place whatsoever in the food supply. We've got to outlaw things like homogenized milk fats, because of the way they promote atherosclerosis and cardiovascular heart disease. We have to eliminate ingredients like sodium nitrite, which causes cancers throughout the body, especially cancers of the digestive tract such as colorectal cancer.

Presently, the United States is home to the most chronically diseased population ever observed in the history of civilization, and it's no coincidence that we also eat the most processed foods, the most fast foods, the highest levels of sugar, salt and food additives than any other country in the world. In fact, we are the home to fast food chains that we franchise all around the world so that we can export disease to other countries in exchange for making a buck in the name of capitalism. We are the creators of the candy bars and the carbonated soft drinks that are now known around the world. We have taken a population that was relatively healthy fifty years ago and we have turned it into a highly diseased population, simply by altering the food supply.

People may say, oh no, that's not true, people are living longer now than 50 years ago. And actually, that's a distortion, because most of the deaths 50 years ago were infant deaths. Infants died of infectious disease due to a lack of good public sanitation. Back then, if you made it past the age of 5, you were going to live a lot longer than people live today. So the lifespan from age 5 is actually lower today than it was 50 years ago when people were eating out of their own gardens, and when they didn't have all these processed foods to consume, and when they didn't have carbonated soft drinks and hydrogenated oils, margarines, shortening, potato chips, snack food, and so on. They were much healthier. They had much greater mental health, too.

Today we live in a nation where people are mentally unstable. We've got kids picking up automatic weapons in schools and blowing away their classmates, and then it turns out they were taking antidepressant drugs. You know, that whole thing probably could have been prevented if those kids were fed some molasses, nuts, fish oils and omega-3 supplements, and taken off of the antidepressant drugs. And all you'd have to do is put those healing ingredients into the school lunches.

But no -- today the school lunch program in our public schools is an atrocity. It has no resemblance whatsoever to good nutrition. We feed kids processed foods, refined sugars, cows' milk, and foods with artificial colors and additives that actually cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. We do this across the nation, and then we sit back and wonder why our children can't learn. So the answer to that, by the public school system, is to water down the curriculum. Let's make the classes easier, so that people can graduate now. You've got a whole nation of kids graduating from high school and many of them can't even read. They can't do basic math -- they can't calculate a 15% tip when they go eat at a restaurant. They're mentally unstable, and it's all traced back to the food supply.

So finally, with this study, we're starting to see some of the healing effects of foods and how these foods stabilize mental health. Imagine what we could do in this country if we encouraged people to eat these healing foods. Imagine if everyone had stable mental health. Imagine if the people running our country had stable mental health -- what kind of a positive impact would that have on foreign relations and domestic priorities? It would have a huge impact.

One final thought on all of this: These healing foods are affordable, are readily available for anyone to pick up and eat, and they are absolutely delicious. So it's time, I suggest, that doctors stop prescribing drugs when there are healing foods that do a better job. They should tell patients to start changing their diets, tell patients to eat some molasses and avoid processed foods. They should teach people to eat some raw nuts, including cashews, peanuts, and macadamia nuts. This will turn around the health of our country. But of course, that would require that we actually educate doctors about nutrition, and so far that hasn't happened.
