Depression can happen to anyone at any time. It is a medical condition that, if treated, can be managed or cured. A depressed person lacks interest in most activities that were once enjoyed, and lacks energy throughout the day. Most of the time, a depressed person’s is irritable. Family and friends notice signs and symptoms changes in appetite or weight, changes in sleep patterns, restlessness or decreased activity, feeling tired and lack of concentration. Depression can affect anyone, and it can last days, weeks or months. Some people are chronically depressed throughout their entire life. To be considered as suffering from depression, these symptoms should last two or more weeks.
Many people suffer from this medical condition. It affects people of all ages, backgrounds and ethnic groups. Over 34 million American adults suffer from depression, and over half this number involves women.
A depressed person has trouble sustaining a job and often suffers from sleep disorders. There is a general, overall feeling of worthlessness, guilt and sadness. I write this article in hope that it can help some one else in a similar situation. Within the past six months I was diagnosed with mild depression. It is nothing to be ashamed of, just a fact of our fast paced, stressed out lives.

I was in a situation where my life had gotten out of balance. I was caught up in trying to make everyone happy, except me. I had a high stress job with a whacked out, unappeasable boss. For some reason I couldn't bring myself to leave even though the prospects of a low stress higher paying job was a given. I continued to try to make the job work and then would come home and unload on my wife and kids. This further fueled the fire by the added stress of martial issues and constant fights with the kids. I had a side business, so when I wasn't fighting with the family I was trying to please those customers as well. I was basically all work and no play.
The final straw was my wife's decision to get a third dog, a Newfoundland. If you are unfamiliar with this breed it is a 150lb dog when full grown. I am not a dog person to begin with, but I have endured our other two small dogs in order to maintain peace with my wife and family. I am sure this was some kind of cry for attention from my wife, but can't really say. Imagine an 80 lb "puppy" bouncing around the house and not completely house trained. Not a good situation.
Sensing things were going from bad to worse I decided to get some help and made an appointment with a psychiatrist. Seeing how happy this simple decision made my wife told me it was the right thing to do. After two sessions with the doctor, she recommended that it was nothing major, but that my imbalance in life may be contributing to a chemical imbalance in my brain. Best I can interrupt it was my brain was trying to cope with what I was doing and it was having trouble keeping up.
So the psychiatrist recommended I see my regular doctor to inquire about a prescription for an anti-depressant. She recommended Wellbutrin since other patients she had worked with had like the results of this medication. It was two fold - it helped with the depression and had very low sexual side effects. My regular doctor had no problem with this recommendation and even had samples that he gave me to try. I started on 150 mg and progressed to 300 mg a day.
Here is the strange part, I didn't feel ANY different. I took the medication and to be honest was disappointed. Not sure what I thought would happen, but something more than nothing seemed appropriate to expect. So after a couple weeks taking it I was scheduled to see the psychiatrist again for an update. I told my wife before I went about my disappointment in the medication and she looked very puzzled. She proceeded to explain how I had a complete turn around on my attitude and was even pleasant to be around. So after talking to the doctors I decided to go ahead and get a prescription (since I was still taking samples).
Here is when it hit home how bad it had been. Initially my health insurance provider declined the prescription. Turns out depression medication required a special request form and approval. Because I had missed this step it was going to cost close to $200/month for the medication. My wife didn't even blinked and said get it. She didn't care what the cost was or even if she had to take second job to pay for it. It really drove home how big a difference the medication made and how bad it had been to be around me.
So, I would strongly recommend seeking professional help if you are having similar problems. They can help you determine your situation and possible solutions. You have very little to lose, a co-payment maybe, and everything to gain. Good luck and good health.

What is Depression?
Depression is a medical condition in which a person feels very sad and worried. The person feels that his/her situation is a hopeless one.
One of its symptoms is when that person finds it hard to sleep.
Depression can attack young or old people, including people of all social levels.
Some Causes of Depression
A woman can be depressed soon after giving birth to a baby.
The death of a husband or a child can cause great sadness to a woman.
The loss of job or failure to pass an examination can depress.
Ministers of God can also experience this condition. Here are some examples:
a. Prophet Elijah was so depressed that he told God in 1 Kings 19:4, “I have had enough, LORD. Take my life, I am not better than my ancestors.”
b. When Jacob lost his son Joseph, he was depressed and refused anyone to comfort him. He said in Genesis 37:35, “…. In mourning will I go down to the grave to my son.”
c. The burden of leading the people of Israel was too much on Moses that he told God to put him to death straight away. (Numbers 11:15)
3 Important Things You Should Do As a Christian When Depression Attacks You
Don’t handle depression lightly. It is dangerous, and can attack any of us.
Here are some of the things you should do when depression strikes you:
1. Remember God and Think About Who He is.
The first thing you should do when you are depressed is to remember God.
Go to His Word immediately, study it, and think deeply about His divine nature.
Turn over in your mind what the Bible says about Him.
Remember that He is an all-knowing God and perfectly understands what is happening to you.
Remember also that He is closely watching you and watching over you.
Psalm 147:5 says that our God is great and mighty in power and His understanding has no limit.
God can use the depression you are facing to work out something good for you.
A number of tests conducted in Massachusetts about the link between depression and pregnancy concluded that pregnancy actually has no effect on clinical depression whatsoever: getting pregnant does not alter brain chemistry in any way that might alleviate depression – and even worse, getting pregnant often has the opposite effect: it can actually worsen depression.
That’s why the Bible says in Romans 8:28 that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him and who have been called according to His purpose.
Remember what Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 32:17 concerning God.
He said, “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you”
God has the power to pull you out of where you have sunk into in your depressed condition.
David said in Psalm 40:1, 2:
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.
2. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
2. Think About What God Has Done
Decide to think deeply about the wonderful things you have read in the Bible that God did for His people.
Be persistent in thinking about them, and your faith in God will start building up. This is a positive sign that shows you are on your way out of depression.
Your distressed and gloomy condition will start turning to a happy and cheerful one.
3. Trust In God
Put all our trust in God.
Listen to this advice in Isaiah 50:10:
“Who among you fears the LORD and obeys his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God”
God loves you with an everlasting love and has drawn you to Himself with loving-kindness. (Isaiah 31:3).
He will never abandon you. Continue to trust Him.
He has spoken these words to help you trust and cling to Him firmly. He says,
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:2)
He also encourages you with this…
15. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you. 16. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” (Isaiah 49:15, 16)
And He said in Zechariah 2:8, 9 that whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye, and He would punish the person who does so.
Stand firm child of God, and trust in God and His mighty power. You will see how He will deliver you from your depressed condition.
You may not understand the depth of His ways as He leads you. However, rest with the assurance that at the end of the day, you will sing victory songs.
Finally, child of God, remember that depression can attack any of us without considering our spiritual, physical or material attainment.
When such a situation confronts you, the first and most important thing you should do is to seek God and be encouraged by what He tells you in His Word.
Remember also that God is with you at all times, and He is always ready to deliver you from any oppressive condition.

When considering both depression and pregnancy, it is important to separate science from mythology. One pervasive parcel of mythology extant today is that women who have depression can negate it by getting pregnant. Popular myth dictates that the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy will somehow alter brain chemistry, lifting pregnant women out of depression. In the past, doctors even espoused this link between depression and pregnancy as true. Today, science has largely disproved this.
What make the depression worse are the restrictions pregnancy imposes. This link between depression and pregnancy is clear. For instance, being pregnant often imposes limited mobility and limited eating choices. Additionally, being pregnant often restricts medicinal choices.
Many antidepressants have been flagged by the FDA – and, as such, are no longer available to pregnant women, as they have the potential to cause birth defects. This link between depression and pregnancy means that a woman could go through a serious bout of depression during pregnancy without any medicinal form of recourse.
Another potential problem that pregnancy brings is postpartum depression. Even for those who aren't depressed, this can still be a problem, as approximately 10% of all pregnant women experience it. Postpartum depression doesn't occur during the pregnancy, but after it, as the name suggests; and is usually triggered by hormonal changes that occur during and after birth. Most who suffer from it also have the same symptoms of those with clinical depression. Additionally, postpartum depression is generally treated in the same manner as standard forms of depression. Effective methods generally focus on behavioral restructuring, antidepressant medication, and counseling.
