Depression, also clinically known as major depressive disorder, affects millions of people around the world but most do not understand that depression is a very real disease. People that have never suffered with depression understand very little about this disease and feel that a person with it should 'get on with their life and get over the depression'.
They believe that depression sufferers can get rid of their depression by using their willpower. People that are close to, or live with those with depression, are often frustrated and annoyed by this and "snap out of it" hear this far too often.

What is Depression?
Primarily treated with medication, major depressive disorder is recognized by the medical community as a disease. Some doctors treat their patients with medication and therapy and for some patients; psychotherapy along with medication is very helpful. Many people fight depression their entire lives and need monitoring to minimize or eliminate reoccurrences of this debilitating disease. Avoiding stressful situations and strictly following the doctor's instructions is paramount.
Symptoms of Depression The most common symptom of depression is sadness and low mood levels. Others that some people suffer from are:
- Irritability - Physical reactions become slow - Not enjoying activities or interests that you liked before - Reasoning is slower - Looking on the dark side or expecting the worse - pessimism - Sex life decreases or lack of interest - Anger or rages
Mild depression may not cause many problems in some peoples lives and be an annoyance more than anything else. This could turn into severe depression and people suffering from this can become completely debilitated by the disease. With moderate to severe depression, there is more chance of suicide. Depression can strike any age group from young to the elderly. If a teenager that liked school and did well suddenly lacks interest, withdraws from family and friends and has mood swings, he/she could be displaying signs of depression.
Types of Depression Some subtypes of depression are:
Mono-polar Depression - There are symptoms of depression. Dysthymic disorder is men and a woman with a mild case of mono-polar disorder that does not touch their social activities or work abilities. Bipolar disorder or Manic Depressive Disease - The manic phase causes a person to sleep and concentrate poorly. The depressive phase cause abnormal elevated moods and impractical optimism. Physical Symptom Depression - Can cause urination difficulties, digestive problems among other things.

Panic Attacks and Depression - You Shouldn't Have to Suffer
Today depression and panic attacks a very common for millions of people around the world. On average, fourteen million Americans suffer from major panic attack and depression. It's perfectly natural for everyone to have periods when they feel down. Bad moods are simply a part of life and some would say that they help you to appreciate the good times. But depression is something quite different. One sign of depression is that your 'down time' goes on for more than a couple of hours per day. Then consider doing something to break the cycle and get out of it, below are six things you can do right now to effect a change in how you feel.
The Results of Panic Attack and Depression
People suffering from depression will feel bored, sad, hopeless, sluggish, alone and unloved. They may suffer from insomnia, and will have elevated anxiety levels. Because of this elevated anxiety, people with panic attack and depression will often experience panic attacks on a normal basis. When someone has more than one panic attack, they can develop a phobia towards the situation, or a fear to return to a specific place. Add in an already depressed view of the world, a worry that others find no worth in you, and you have a recipe for one miserable person.
1. Change your posture. There is a definite body posture that triggers or deepens depression. The signs are, moving slowly or lethargically, shoulders slumped, head down looking at the ground. These postures are known to increase negative thoughts and emotions. When you break out of this posture - even by doing something as simple as looking up towards the sky or jumping up and down - you interrupt this pattern and change your way of thinking.
2. Reduce the sugar in your diet. Just by reducing your intake of cakes, biscuits, chocolate and processed foods could make you feel better. In a study at the University of South Alabama, Professor Larry Christenden found that reducing the sugar levels in the blood helped to lift the mood of 25% of patients.
3. Get some online help. There are plenty of sites that offer free pdf and mp3 downloads that will help. If you Google free, online, depression, self-help, therapy you'll find sites like virtual-therapist.com who offer free advice and downloads that will help you to feel better now.
4. Laugh. Laughter is known to increase the levels of endorphins and stimulate the left frontal lobe of the brain where happy thoughts and feelings are created. Simply laughing out loud for no good reason, watching a comedy programme, or being with people who smile will have the right effect.
5. Share the problem. A problem shared is a problem halved. Talking through a problem with someone will help you gain a fresh perspective. If there's nobody around then listening to a self-help programme would work in the same way.
6. Go for a walk. Studies have proven that exercise is just as effective as Prozac in reducing the symptoms of depression. In fact Professor Tylee of Maudsley Hospital, London says "It's top of the list of things we're recommending doctors 'prescribe' to patients". Try it and you'll find that three 45-minute sessions every week will work wonders.
The key here is to take some action to break the pattern. Whilst these techniques may not necessarily treat the root cause of the problem they will certainly help to reduce the effect of depression long enough to help you find a way to beat it long-term.

Successful Treatment of Depression Without Drugs
In the past treatment of depression was done by many different types of talk therapy by psychologists. There are over 250 psychotherapy "techniques", and NONE of them have been proven to work any better than any other.
But, the fact remains that very few depressed patients were ever "cured" by talk type psychotherapy. As a matter of fact, it has been shown in several studies that talking to a sympathetic friend, even a bartender, or almost anyone who will listen is about as good as talking to a psychological clinician (at $100 up per hour).
The APA has neatly classified several different types of depression (manic, bipolar, unipolar, post-partum, grief, etc - mostly for the purposes of legally making them covered by health insurance.)
Psychiatrists would seem to have somewhat of an advantage here. They have the battery of drugs that "seem" to help depressed persons at least get thru life without too many suicides from depression. Here's another fact. Nobody ever got depressed because of poor toilet training as a child. Freud had a lot of good ideas, but this wasn't one of them. There's been a lot written about stress causing depression, and stress is a component (as poor toilet training may be). But, it doesn't CAUSE depression directly. So, just what does cause depression?
The Orthomolecular Theory and my experience in practice taught me that there were three basic causes of depression. Clearing up these "stresses" cleared up the patient's ability to withstand the normal stress of everyday living as well as the heavy stresses put on some at times. These three basic causes are: * Mineral Toxicity (perhaps 10-15%) * Nutritional Deficiency (perhaps 15-20% * Allergies and Other Stress Factors (perhaps 75-85%)

Mineral Toxicity There are several minerals that may cause depression (at toxic levels) directly. These include toxic levels of mercury, copper, lead, and others. (In the case of copper, medium toxic levels of copper can cause depression, and higher levels may cause schizophrenia.) Lead is still a problem, but becoming less likely due to removing it from gasoline and paint. I even had one patient with arsenic causing depression.
As mentioned above, almost every kind of stress causes the body to use up various vitamins and minerals faster. This means that when you are under unusual stress, you should be taking more vitamins.
Allergies and Stress
Now we come to the real meat. Allergy! Or, more precisely, both allergies and/or food/chemical sensitivities. To allergists, they are two separate problems, and until recently, few MD allergists even considered food sensitivity at all. Both allergy and sensitivity can cause all the same symptoms/disease as the other. Ranging from schizophrenia and depression to hyperactivity and bedwetting, arthritis and skin itching. The list of potential symptoms of allergy and/or sensitivity is as long as your arm.. It surprises many people that most of the "brain problems" of depression, ADD/ADHD, schizophrenia, epilepsy, etc can be, and often are caused by allergy and/or sensitivity.
Let's talk about stress. Either allergy or sensitivity causes huge stress to the body, and stress is additive. So, if you have an emotional strain in your life at the same time as an allergen is affecting you, the overall stress becomes much more, and your body needs much more in the way of good nutrition to help get thru this stressful period. Post Partum Depression and PMS are often examples of additive stress.
In virtually every depressed patient I ever saw in my practice the depression "lifted" when the combination of stress from allergy and/or mineral toxicity was dealt with. (I estimate about 80% allergy/sensitivity and 20% mineral toxicity with a lot of overlap.) By curing the underlying physical problem, the "ordinary" stress of modern life can usualy be dealt with.
I should mention at this point that whenever I saw a depression patient for the first time, I immediately started them on what I called "Immediate Relief". This was a combination of 500 mg of Tryptophan, and 500 mg of Tyrosine - from 1-3 times per day along with at least 50 mg B complex at the same time. None of these cause any side effects (unless you are allergic to capsules or some of the "fillers" used.) This helped to lift their depression during the search for the underlying problem, and helped defuse thoughts about suicide. There are now nutritional supplements with these combinations on the market. Neu-Becalm'd is the one that I recommend. Info about Neu-Becalm'd can be found at www.StressTalk.com In April 2002, I leased two EEG biofeedback units to two different people that have reported back to me. One, was a suicidal and depressed young man. With 40 1/2 hour sessions, he was completely turned around, and is quite normal. No depression symptoms at all. The other was an older woman, and she reported that after training her son (ADD/ADHD), she felt much better just watching him train, so she did sessions herself. She didn't report how many, but not only was her son free of his ADD/ADHD symptoms, but her depression was gone as well.
(Since that was written, many more cases have been successful.) Dr Von Hilsheimer reports 100% success with all types of depression in his biofeedback practice in Orlando Florida. How does it work? My theory first voiced to Dr Von in 2000 is that this EEG BF training somehow trains the brain to change the effect of some allergens on the brain/body. My first test of the Auditory Brain Wave Training system proved that this theory is at least partially correct. Many of the people in this test lost several allergies/sensitivities. In 2004, I realized that if EEG Biofeedback (neurofeedback) could solve various "brain problems" such as: ADD/ADHD, Autism, depression, insomnia, etc, by simply changing some specific brain wave bands, then it should be possible to do the same thing using passive subliminal audio. I made up a test audio, and tested it on over 40 volunteers (who all paid to take part in this test).
The results were mixed, but overall it proved that raising one brain wave (called SMR) did change the allergen effect(s) on the brain. Every depressed person, and every person with Insomnia who used the audio for more than a month solved their problems. (Insomnia/sleep problems ares often a component of depression.)
Since I only used the audio message to raise the SMR brain wave, there were some ADD/ADHD persons who did not get as much benefit as hoped. (Included in this test were 3 kids that hadn't been helped by EEG biofeedback, and they weren't helped by this audio either).
I knew that NASA had found that lowering the Theta brain wave increased attention/concentration. In 2005, I devised a new audio that included lowering of the Theta brain wave as well as raising the SMR brain wave. This was also tested on over 40 participants, most of whom paid up to $100 each. Every ADD/ADHD person tested, (who used the audio for over 6 weeks) improved dramatically. Even some autistic kids did very well, and the parents are continuing it's use. I cannot, and do not claim that the Auditory BrainWave Training system will "cure" any brain problems, but to date, I can state that this system has solved a very high percentage of such problems, comparable to EEG biofeedback (estimated by most at around 85%) at a fraction of the cost.

How To Overcome Your Bipolar Disorder And Depression As A Parent
It can be tough for a parent who has depression to manage the household. Not only do you have to take care of the kids, you also have to deal with your issues. Sometimes your depression, bipolar disorder or your fears can interfere with your job as a parent. What can a parent do to get better?
The first step is that you should talk to a professional who can get you started in the right path of getting better. Getting help from a counselor is very important and can provide you much help and insights in dealing with your current problem.
In addition, here are some techniques a parent can use to help manage their fears and depression.
Learn to manage your depression and taking care of the kids at the same time. Parenting is a 24 hour job and so is taking care of your mental health. If you become overwhelmed ask your spouse or other family members for help. Learn to share the responsibilities in the household. Communication with the other members of your family is very important.
Learn to manage your negative thinking. Instead of focusing on your anxious thoughts try to think of something positive. Read a short book or read some affirmations that will make you feel better. Remember not to dwell on your depressing and fearful thoughts.
Be able to organize your daily activities so you do not become overwhelmed. Set some time to reduce your anxiety and stress when your not taking care of the kids. If the kids are at school, take a walk or do something enjoyable that will make you happy and relaxed.
It is not easy to deal with your depression and fears. Once you get some help from a professional, things should become easier. Remember that there is hope for you and there are ways to deal with your fears as a parent. Just be patient and not give up.

Do not focus too far into the future. It can be tough not to worry about what may happen in the future. The fact of the matter is that all your worrying will not be that effective in determining what may or may not happen. The best thing a person can do is to focus on the present.
Remember there is hope in managing your fears and anxieties. All it takes is some effort on the person's part to find the answers that will help them.

The last thing most people who suffer from depression want to do is exercise. The dark hole of depression can make even getting out of bed everyday a seemingly impossible task. If you suffer from depression it is imperative that you see your doctor or a therapist first, but don't be surprised if they prescribe some sort of exercise regimen for you to follow in addition to some of the more normal treatments for depression.
Now as hard as it may seem to get out and start exercising when you are depressed there are some real benefits to be had.
1. Improves your confidence. As you get in better shape you will gain more confidence in yourself and your ability to meet your goals.
2. Increases your self-esteem. Exercise will improve your appearance and your sense of self worth. It will also improve your health and vitality.
3. A distraction. Having a set schedule for your exercise routine, no matter what it is, gives you something to look forward to and can help take your mind off of your problems.
4. Stress relief. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and frustration.
5. Getting out. Exercising allows you to get out and interact with other people, whether at the gym or just greeting people during your nightly walk.
6. Good coping strategy. Exercise is beneficial to anyone who does it. It is a positive way to deal with depression, anxiety or stress because you will benefit in the long run from it.
An important thing to remember is that as hard as it may seem to start exercising when you are depressed is that if you can get started the benefits will far outweigh any negative thoughts you may have about doing it. And once you get going don't give up. Once you've decided to start exercising make sure you don't over do it. Because nothing will cause you to loose all interest than a sore and broken body. Here are some general guidelines to consider before you start your exercise program.
1. Talk to your doctor or therapist first. They can help guide you and refer you to someone who can help you set up an exercise program that's right for you.
2. Set simple goals. Exercise should be fun and make you feel good. Don't approach it like you are training for the Olympics. Start easy and build from there.
3. Go with what you enjoy. If you have worked out in the past and enjoyed what you were doing start with that again. For some people just simply going for a walk is enjoyable for them.
4. Find a workout buddy. Exercising with a friend is great for helping lift your mood. It gives you someone to talk to and enjoy your work-out with.
5. Go outside. Getting out in the fresh air and sun is always a good way to improve your mood. Even if you work-out in a gym, take the time to go for a walks a couple of times a week.
6. Don't let setbacks get you down. Some days you may not be able to get in your exercise. Don't let that bother you, it happens to everyone. Keep at it and you will see your growth.
Using exercise as a treatment for depression is a growing trend. But you should always consult your doctor or therapist if you are feeling depressed or exhibit the symptoms of depression. Embarking on an exercise program on your own is not the right thing to do. It should be used in conjunction with other treatments such as medication and therapy. Taken together with these other therapies, exercise can be a great way to help battle your depression.
