Reducing Frown Lines May Reduce Sadness And Depression

Your looks are you...or are they? If your smile makes you feel better, then would a permanent frown make you sad or depressed? Who hasn't had a friend come up and ask "are you OK? You look exhausted or stressed" even when you were doing your absolute best to "seem normal"? Clearly, you're "wearing your heart on your sleeve" for the world to see, no matter how artful your cover up attempts seem.

So, at this delicate juncture between brain hormones and physical looks enters the Botox depression therapy theory and what it's shown to do.

These and other psychoanalytic curiosities are inching their way into the mainstream body image business where the look-good-feel-good generation demands "cures" for aging looks and emotional baggage that hangs around to reveal our life experiences.

Botox Depression Therapy - New Guy On The Psychoanalysts' Street.

Sadness can slowly morph into a steady-state depression that can move sufferers into the armchair of the psychiatrist's office as well as into using anti-depressant medications. On the opposite side of the emotional spectrum, the bright eyed lit up face of a smiling person is shown to create a cascade of brain "happy hormones" such as endorphins which have shown measured increases at exactly the moment when smiling and laughter occurs.

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures to relax facial muscles and so reduce frown lines and the drooping sad hang-dog expression implied by this facial transformation, Botox is leading a secret life as a potentially effective tool in the battle against depression. How so? By subtly altering and relaxing facial muscles, and virtually eliminating frown lines and deeper creases in the skin caused by years of patterned use and muscles remaining tensioned.

The Nuts And Bolts Theory Revealed - Change Your Looks And Change Your Mental State.

In science, and in real life, the generally accepted view is that mood is "created" within the mind...and then becomes portrayed through a person's eyes and facial expression. Sadness and depression, while discernable in another person's outward appearance, is a mental phenomenon, treatable with drugs and therapy aimed at the mind.

However, surprising recent research results show that face wrinkle removal treatment, using Botox, not only reduced the appearance of a "permanent scowl" but also measurably resulted in uplifting the psychological mood of the patients. Here's the body logic reasoning. If the mind can create a mood and "look", then the body can create a look in order to create a "mood". Facial muscles can control mood perhaps as much as the mind can.

More Effective Than Anti Depressants?

Once again, the body-mind matrix proves ever complicating where simplistic theories fail to take-in all the impact factors. This may seem absurd and counter-intuitive. Think of it as the equivalent of stopping hay fever by addressing physical symptoms like simply stopping red eyes or sneezing rather than focusing on a weakened immune system or preventing exposure to allergens.

Sounds wacky but tests using Botox resulted in depression lowering at a rate nearly twice as high as prescription anti depressants. Something is going on, and that "something" lies within the facial muscles and how they interact with the mind to co-produce our moods.

Similar Results For Mobius Paralysis Sufferers.

Is this outlandish or are hints of this phenomenon already known? Turns out that a rare form of facial paralysis known as Mobius syndrome repeatedly shows that sufferers whose face fails to flex and move exhibit far lower emotional responses to all sorts of everyday events.

Psychoanalytic literature contains cases where professional actors and actresses have become temporarily mood-altered by the constant portrayal of sad despairing role characters. The artists leave the stage, but due to the constant visceral tension of portraying despair, they end up "absorbing" their role to the extent that their outside lives begin to fill with sadness and depression.

The Great Depression: Causes and Effects

During high school I asked a naïve question to my economics teacher – which is the best phase for an economy and can we get rid of downturns. Her response was a measured one – the best economic phase is when the aggregate demand keeps exceeding aggregate supply slightly with little inflation. And on making depression a word of past – she responds, we still have to go a long way. It is not a matter of economic cycle but a matter of human greed. Regulatory bodies can only play a limited role in controlling the economy in capitalism, in the end it all boils down to the people. After burning our fingers in various downturns since The Great Depression, we can safely say that monetary steps contributed more to it than pure collapse in demand of goods.

Under such circumstances the best government could do was to do nothing that might make a bad thing worse.

Factors contributing to The Great Depression

The Stock Market Crash

Decade of strong performance after the first World War, the stock market was euphoric and rose to unprecedented heights. When the economy got overheated and speculation ran rampant, a crash was unavoidable. But President Hoover had other ideas, together with Federal Reserve policy board head Miller he decided to clamp down the share prices and bring the market down by keeping away banks to extending loans that would be used buy stocks.

The situation was further worsened by firming of money rates to commercial interests. With it the bank is not within its reasonable claim for discount facilities at its federal reserve bank when it borrows either for the purpose of making speculative loans or for the purpose of maintaining speculative loans. It cut the money supply by one-third from 1929 to 1932. There was much less money to go around, businessmen could not get new loans--and could not even get their old loans renewed. They had to stop investing. Not because they did not want to but because banks could not lend them the money they needed. This interpretation blames the government and calls for a much more careful Federal Reserve policy. As the system collapsed it spreads panic. The first banking panic occurred in late 1930; the second in the spring of 1931, and the third in March 1933. When it was over, 10,000 banks had gone out of business, with well over $2 billion in deposits lost.

Deflation Effects

Misreading of deflation effects is also one of the major reasons, as the depression lasted longer than any before it. It is safely assumed that in deflationary conditions the interest rates will come down drastically and it will encourage people to borrow and invest money again in the economy. But as the market crashed and lots of people loosing the saving, unemployment sets in. The nominal interest rates increased steeply, leaving purchasing power of people drastically reduced. With this a sharp recession became a global depression.

In the next article I will discuss why The Great Depression spread across borders and became global phenomena.

The Great Depression: Why It Spread World Wide

In the last article I discussed what are the causes behind The Great Depression of 1929. In this article I will spread some light on why The Great Depression became a global phenomena rather than affecting only limited economies.

Most money was paper based, as it is today, but governments were obligated, if requested, to redeem that paper for gold (Principal on which gold standard is based).

How Great Depression spreads worldwide

The Gold Standard

This "convertibility" put an upper limit on the amount of paper currency a government could print, and thus able to prevent inflation. There was no tradition of continuous, modest inflation in those times. Most countries went off from the gold standard during World War I, and restoring it afterward became a major postwar aim .

Britain, returned to gold in 1925. Other countries followed soon and those which don't back their paper money with gold, started backing it with currencies—mainly U.S. dollars and British pounds—that were convertible into gold. As a result flexibility of governments was limited. A loss of gold often forced governments to raise interest rates. The higher interest rates discouraged conversion of interest-bearing deposits into gold and bolstered confidence that inflation would not break the commitment to gold.

World War I

Wartime inflation, when the gold standard was suspended, raised prices and prompted fears that gold stocks were inadequate to provide backing for enlarged money supplies at the new, higher price level. This was one reason that convertible currencies, such as the dollar and pound, were used as gold substitutes.

The war weakened Britain, left Germany with massive payments, and split the Austro-Hungarian Empire into many countries. These countries, plus Germany, depended on foreign loans to pay for their imports. The arrangement was unstable because any withdrawal of short-term loans would force the borrowing countries to retrench, which could cripple world trade. It was the first taste of globalisation and inter-dependence in world economies.

Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act

Most historians and economists blame the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 part of the blame for worsening the depression by reducing international trade and causing retaliation. As for the United States, foreign trade was a small part of overall economic activity; it was a much larger factor in most other countries. The average ad valorem rate of duties on dutiable imports for 1921-1925 was 25.9% but under the new tariff it jumped to 50.0% in 1931-1935.

The Great Depression was the worst economic slump ever in U.S. history, and one which spread to virtually the entire industrialized world. The American economy do had few scares before it in 1830's under President Martin Van Buren, in the 1850s under James Buchanan, during Ulysses Grant's term in the 1870s and, most notably, under Grover Cleveland in the 1890s but the Great Depression first time raised the serious question regarding the sustainability of our financial institutions. Though we have came a long way in making them fool proof, the Asian crisis and the Latin American crisis still take us back to the high school answer “It all left to the human greed”.

Depression Treatment

Depression is of two types one is Major Depressive Disorder and the other Bipolar Disorder. The two are different which require different treatments. The symptoms of the former involves sadness, excessive crying, loss of pleasure, sleeping too much or too little, low energy, restlessness, difficulty in concentrating, irritability, loss of appetite or overeating, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, feelings of physical problems that are not caused by physical illness or injury like headaches, digestive problems, pain and thoughts of death or suicide.

Bipolar disorder involves episodes of depression and also episodes of mania like inappropriate sense of euphoria (excitement), reckless behavior, little sleep needed, excessive energy, racing thoughts; talking too much, out of control spending, difficulty concentrating, irritability, abnormally increased activity including sexual activity, poor judgment, aggressive behavior, extreme irritability or “out of control” behavior. People with depression do not experience manic episodes.

And an episode whether depressive or manic can last for days, weeks, months or even years. It is very essential to note that the treatment differs for both the conditions. Both biological factors like genetics and psychological factors like stress play a major role in causing depression.

For people who are correctly diagnosed with depression i.e. major depressive disorder, antidepressant medications are often highly effective and they must be taken regularly for three to four weeks, sometimes even longer, before the full response is seen. Other treatments involve Electroconvulsive therapy, Lithium and Anticonvulsant medication both used for prevention. Sometimes interpersonal therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy is also used.

Treatments for bipolar disorder often involve a two-part plan of using both medication and psychotherapy. Different types of medications are used to treat bipolar disorder, including medicines for controlling manic symptoms, depressive symptoms or medications that help stabilize the patient's mood. Psychotherapy, with a licensed therapist or social worker, is also used in bipolar disorder treatment. Cognitive Therapy focuses on changing inappropriate or negative thought patterns, Behavioral Therapy focuses on current behaviors and Interpersonal therapy focuses on current relationships that can affect the illness. Psychoeducation helps the patient and family understand the illness and recognize signs of relapse. Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy focuses on daily routines that can promote emotional stability. The line of treatment depends on the patient’s needs who usually works with healthcare professionals that supervise the patient’s care maintaining personal contact with each other to help ensure the patients' continued progress.

In both of the above cases it is very important that you do not stop treatment on your own, whether you have concerns about your medicine or if you feel you are doing better, discuss openly with your doctor.

Post Natal Depression

What is post natal depression?

There is no doubt that the introduction of a baby into your life, no matter how loved and wanted, can cause a lot of emotional and physical stress if you are not prepared.

Like any person beyond their smooth skin teen years, you look into a mirror and get back face wrinkles, sagging jowls, frown lines, crows feet lines around your mouth, shrinking lip volume and shape, sunken cheeks and weird facial fat deposits. You don't feel the way you look...but what to do about it?

In our western culture, support for new mothers can be lacking because relatives often live far away and our friends may not be our immediate neighbours. Also, when your friends and family are with you, you may find that their expectations about how you should be feeling are not necessarily the same as yours. Alternatively, your feelings may not be as intense as you expect them to be immediately after birth and for some women, it can take some time before the feelings of love for the new baby develops.

For many women the pregnancy may have been a difficult one and the baby may not have been planned. Many things can influence the way that you initially feel about your new baby. These emotional stresses combined with a less than optimal level of nutrition and the obvious hormone changes that you will be experiencing post birth with perhaps a poor sleep pattern due to the babies demands can lead to post natal depression, and it is very common.

There are ways to both prevent and treat depressive thinking effectively without resorting to drugs.

So what are the symptoms of post natal depression?

Well it is no different from the symptoms of general depression, these can include:

• A lack of motivation
• Vivid dreaming
• Waking early feeling exhausted (this may be a normal part of early life with your baby of course, especially if he or she is not a good sleeper)
• A lack of pleasure in usually pleasurable activities
• Anxiety
• Black and white thinking (everything bad happens to me, everything good to others etc)
• Negative introspection and worrying
• Excessive guilt
• A loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Reducing pleasurable activities
• A loss of libido

So how can you help prevent post natal depression?

The first thing to state is that most women don’t actually get full depression but they tend to classify feeling weepy and a bit low as depression. This is quite normal and will pass after a few weeks so don’t get too concerned if you do have mood swings or if you don’t feel your usual self. It is probably due to the hormones changes that occur after birth as your body begins returning to normal, and remember you have been sharing your body with your baby for nine months and many women express a feeling akin to grief at this parting. So this is normal and will pass.

If you are concerned or you have suffered from depression in the past and want be prepared what can you do?

Well the good news is that relaxation and can be very effective at de-conditioning the emotional arousal that happens during depression. So planning time to practice active relaxation and using the techniques on the Second Nature Birth Programme will certainly be beneficial and will help you to prepare mentally for the birth. Practicing the techniques will make it easier to relax after the birth and will be a powerful aid to de-stressing. We are far more able to cope with stress if we have a tool or method to help us relax. Keep up some form of physical exercise. For example, if you are practicing yoga, do not give it up after birth. Go for long walks with your baby as soon as you feel comfortable enough and strong enough to do so. This would usually be at least three weeks after the birth and longer if you have had a caesarean. (consult your midwife for advice if you are unsure)

Join a local support network prior to the birth of your baby. A mother and toddlers group may offer exactly the support and shared experience that you need after the birth and a group like the National Childbirth Trust in the UK would be ideal.

Remember your diet is as important if you are breast feeding as it is when you are pregnant. The following is especially pertinent to maintaining mental health through diet:

a. Supplement vitamins and minerals during pregnancy, particularly calcium, magnesium and zinc.

b. Eat a lot of oily fish, herring mackerel, sardines salmon and tuna are all good.

c. Supplement omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

d. Eat a lot of raw fruit and vegetables (organic if possible) and seeds.

e. Make up this mixture and use on breakfast cereal and in soups, one tablespoon a day. Make up equal quantities of sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and then three times the amount of flax (linseeds) together in a blender. Grind them until they are granulated and store the mixture in the fridge.

f. If you are constipated you may wish to use a few more flax seeds during the day separately as these will aid the digestion.

What else can you do?

Talk to your partner. Friends and family and discuss any concerns that you have before they arise. Do not wait for issues to sort themselves out as they have a habit of hanging around.

Plan for the birth. This may seem obvious, but what we mean are the less obvious aspects like:

Find out who among your family and friends will be willing to baby sit or offer you support you in other way. Knowing this will be very reassuring.

When you cook, double the quantities. This means that you will only need to cook half the time.

Talk to other mums and learn from them about what they did to cope with a new baby.

Book your nursery place well in advance if you are planning a return to work. If you are not then you will want to plan intellectual stimulation when you are at home with your baby especially if you have had a challenging career.
