A Few Steps For Fighting Depression

One of the most destructive states for your mind and body is strongly represented by depression. It is a phenomenon that affects millions of people around the world, no matter what culture they belong to. The triggering elements of depression are infinite and they vary from case to case. Outside and inner factors often attack our mind and body together, making depression a profoundly negative aspect of our lives. Let's have a look at some great tips to conquer the negative mood and get the most joy out of your daily routine.

This hormone is only produced in the dark - this is why wintertime also brings more depression, as the sun is hidden and the nights are very long.

1. Go outside. A nice spring day, for example, can cheer even the saddest person. But staying out in the sun is beneficial for more than just poetic reasons. Sunlight has an important role in many chemical processes taking place in our body. Lack of sunshine triggers the release of melatonin, a hormone that gives a feeling of lethargy and tiredness.

2. Get involved. An active life leaves very little room for depression. You tend to let negative feelings dominate your mood when you reach a point of constant and repetitive analysis of your problems. Involving yourself in several inspiring activities will greatly reduce the times when you feel sorry for yourself. Maybe you are depressed because you failed to reach an important milestone in your journey towards a goal. Don't get discouraged. Try to pursue that goal right away or, if it is completely compromised, find a different ideal to fight for.

3. Allow some time for relaxation. Have some fun and relax your mind and your body. When negative thoughts start circling around you shift your focus to a pleasant element. It can be a person, a location, something around you or even a distant memory. Clear your head, by using this technique, of all the negative feelings and all your worries.

4. Balance your diet and take care of your fitness. Try to lower the use of alcohol or caffeine from your diet. After the momentary boost is gone you will only feel worse and get addicted to wanting even more. Some good physical exercise will never do any harm - so try it. The fitter you are the more self-esteem you'll experience and this will eventually lead to your happiness.

5. Socialize. No matter how difficult it might seem to get out of the house and smile in the company of others, this is probably the most effective way of getting over depression. Socializing is essential for anyone of us and you should consider it a fun activity, not an obligation. Select some friends that have always made you feel better and reconnect with them. First thing you should do to get out of depression

Depression, in psychiatry, is a symptom of mood disorder characterized by intense feelings of loss, sadness, hopelessness, failure, and rejection. The two major types of mood disorder are unipolar disorder, also called major depression, and bipolar disorder, whose sufferers are termed manic-depressive.

Here are few suggestions to get the better of the depressed mood and get the most happiness out of your daily activities.

Take a Break.
I mean it. Listen to soothing music. Soak in a nice warm bath. Ask one of your close friends to massage you. Take a break from your stressful workload and spend the day just goofing around. In other words, have fun.

Eat Right and Stay Fit.
Avoid foods with lots of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. Sugar and caffeine may give you a brief moment of energy; but they would later bring about anxiety , tension, and internal problems. Alcohol is a depressant. Many people would drink alcohol to "forget their problems." They're just aggravating their conditions in the process.

Exercising regularly is a vital depression buster because it allows your body to produce more endorphins than usual. Endorphins are sometimes called "the happy chemicals" because of their stress-reducing and happiness-inducing properties.

Get Enough Light and Sunshine.
Lack of exposure to sunlight is responsible for the secretion of the hormone melatonin, which could trigger a dispirited mood and a lethargic condition.

Melatonin is only produced in the dark. It lowers the body temperature and makes you feel sluggish. If you are always cooped up in your room (with the curtains closed), it would be difficult to restrain yourself from staying in bed.

This is the reason why many people are suffering from depression much more often in winter than in the other seasons. It's because the nights are longer.

If you can't afford to get some sunshine, you can always lighten up your room with brighter lights. Have lunch outside the office. Take frequent walks instead of driving your car over short distances.

Get Busy. Get Inspired.
You'll be more likely to overcome any feeling of depression if you are too busy to notice it. Live a life full of inspired activities.
Do the things you love. If you're a little short on cash, you could engage in simple stuffs like taking a leisurely stroll in the park, playing sports, reading books, or engaging in any activity that you have passion for and would love to pursue.

Set a goal - a meaningful purpose in life. No matter how difficult or discouraging life can be, remain firm and have an unshakable belief that you are capable of doing anything you desire. With this kind of positive attitude, you will attain a cheerful disposition to beat the blues.

Get a Social Life.
No man is an island. Your circle of friends are there to give you moral support. Spending time and engaging in worthwhile activities with them could give you a very satisfying feeling. Nothing feels better than having group support.

Never underestimate the power of touch. Doesn't it feel so good when someone pats you on the back and gives you words of encouragement during your most challenging times? Hug or embrace someone today. You'll never know when you have saved another life.

Get intimate. Establish close ties with your family and friends. The love and care expressed by others could tremendously boost your immune system and fend off illnesses. Best of all, you'll live a more secured and happy life.

Depression

Many of us feel depressed at one time or another, but for some, depression may be chronic and even debilitating.
Emotions are a normal part of our life. We all experience anger, sadness, worry or fear on occasion and it does not lead to disease. It only leads to health problems when emotions are excessive or repressed for long periods of time. Emotional stress will tend to weaken your "Qi", or energy, or your Qi can stagnate or move in the wrong direction.

Depression can also start from a physical source.

For example, insomnia, working too much, or a chronic illness can weaken your Qi, resulting in being upset easily or out or proportion to the situation. A weakened digestive system or lack of proper fluids can cause the quality or quantity of blood to be poor, resulting in depression. A lack of exercise easily leads to Qi stagnation and depression.

Long-standing depression may be due to repressed anger or resentment. In Chinese Medicine, this most commonly affects the Qi of the Liver, causing it to stagnate. Aside from depression, other symptoms of Liver Qi Stagnation may be irritability, "snapping" easily, and intense feelings of frustration and impatience. Physical symptoms of Liver Qi Stagnation may include distention under the rib cage, stomach area, or abdomen, belching, sighing, nausea, moodiness, a feeling of a lump in the throat, and pre-menstrual irritability and breast tenderness. If the Qi of the Lungs or Heart has stagnated, symptoms may include weeping and sadness, and you may be easily affected by the problems of people around you.

Though usually in the early stages of depression only the Qi of various organs is affected, eventually this leads to other problems such as formation of dampness, phlegm, blood stagnation, or heat. This causes further stagnation and can lead to a vicious cycle. Liver Qi Stagnation can disrupt the functioning of the digestive system and lead to weight gain, even if you are eating normal amounts.

Once the possibility of man and depression has been cross-linked inside of the mind a a depressed male, you now have the challenge of judgment to deal with. Men often judge others who struggle with depression as weak. Or, even if they accept and support someone who's depressed, they will not afford themselves the same love and acceptance. This is a real stopper. Some men, realizing they are a man and depression is permeating their life will live in isolation for years. That man might think, "I can do this on my own. No one must know about this or... If I were only strong enough... If my marriage were only better... If I had the right job..." Any of this sounding familiar?

There is stigma in general around being depressed, no matter your gender but you can triple that for the man and depression sufferer. Depression in men who even recognize and seek treatment for it, often sabotage themselves by stopping medication too early and they stop using the life skills they were taught to battle depression. Man and depression have a long way to go.

Often the drugs given to treat depression cause further stagnation and accumulation of dampness, perpetuating the underlying physical cause. Western drugs can be an important part of the treatment, especially if there is a danger the patient will possibly harm themselves or others, or if it makes it possible for the patient to function enough to seek additional means of help. It is extremely important to address the underlying problem, whether through acupuncture, herbs, counseling, light therapy, nutrition, exercise, or a combination of treatments. Never abruptly stop your prescription, and only reduce it gradually with the supervision of your Western health care provider. If you decide to take herbs or amino acids, make sure they are compatible with your medications.

If your depression results from lack of energy, mild exercise is best, and will increase your energy gradually. If stagnation is the problem, moderate exercise will be beneficial. Avoid alcohol, marijuana, and coffee since they cause Qi to stagnate. Eating a balanced diet with nutritious foods and drinking at least two quarts of water per day can be very helpful. Getting adequate rest and planning fun activities can elevate your mood.

Tips To Beat Depression

We all have days when we are down, worn out and just not feeling all that happy.
That's okay. You need to have days like this, otherwise how would you know when you are happy?

You appreciate your good days even more when you have the occasional bad day for contrast. What is black without white?
Even though sadness is a part of life, let's try to make it a small part of life.

With that said, here are a few tips to help you feel better when you are feeling down in the dumps. They are easy to practice every day, and they work!

  1. Stand up straight and sit up straight. When your body is in alignment your energy can flow and when your energy is flowing freely, you can flow.
  2. Smile! Yes, just smile. Easy to do and effective. This technique can also change the way others react to you, which can further elevate your mood.
  3. Repeat positive affirmations. Things like "I feel good", "Positive energy flows through my body", "I see the good in all". Always phrase your affirmations is a positive way. For example, "I hate smoking" becomes "I love taking deep breaths of fresh air". One more very important thing about affirmations, you must infuse your affirmations with emotion. This is the key to making affirmations work.
  4. Listen to some music that you like. It doesn't have to be anything specific, just something you enjoy. Certain types of music work better than others, so experiment and see what works for you. Studies have shown that classical music and new age music work best.
  5. Take some "me" time. Indulge yourself in something you enjoy, such as:
  1. Meditate. Meditation is an excellent habit to develop. It will serve you well in all that you do. If you have a hard time sitting still, then try some special meditation CDs that coax your brain into the meditative state. Just search for "meditation music" on Google or Yahoo and explore.
  2. Exercise. This doesn't have to mean pumping iron! Even something as simple as taking a walk will get your blood flowing. Believe me, you will feel better.

Our outside world is simply a reflection of our inside world. Remember there is no reality just your perception of it. Use this truth to your advantage. Whenever you are sad, realize that you have the power to change your perception.

These tips will lift you up when you are down, but don't just use them when you are sad. Try and practice them every day, make them a habit. You will be surprised at how these simple exercises will keep the blues away. On a final note, if you are in a deep depression that you can't seem to shake, please go see a doctor. This is your life, don't take any chances.

Feel Depression Melt Away

You feel a deep sense of satisfaction and confidence; you are the rock others turn to in a crisis. You make decisions with a clear mind; with a sense of calm and assurance. You feel a sense of freedom and aliveness as you boldly embrace life with the playful laughter of a child. You smile with a sense of knowingness, remembering how depression used to play a part in your life.

All year round cloudy weather may have the same negative effects. If you live in such an area try to "get away" a few times a year and go to someplace where you can enjoy the sun. Finding reasons to go outside is easy: practice a sport, go fishing, try hiking, do some gardening.

Used to.
Life can be challenging, if not overwhelming. Feelings of depression can hang over our life, bringing clouds that drown our sense of hope.

Is there an effective answer to depression that doesn't involve the side effects and dependence of medication or the painful, expensive, long process of psychotherapy?

Take a brief moment and imagine your life free of depression - right now. Yes, imagine that from this moment forward, you experience nothing but happiness and joy in any given situation at least ninety percent of the time for the rest of your life.

Now notice the feelings that arise for you . . . are they positive and optimistic that this is exactly what you will experience from this moment on?

Or do you have heavy feelings and thoughts that say, - "You don't know my problems. My life sucks.", - or "You can't help me. I can't help myself.", - or "That's just life. I've always felt this way and I probably always will."

If you are not having the experience of happiness and fun in any situation then you may be holding, or at the effect of, feelings that do not allow that condition to occur. In other words, if you do not feel as happy, confident, and positive in any given situation as you desire it is for one simple reason; you are literally holding feelings that actually prevent you from experiencing it!

THE GOOD NEWS IS HERE!
These feelings you have are just feelings. You can let these feelings go just as easily as you can let an object you are holding drop to the ground. These feelings you hold will only prevent you from having exactly what you want for as long as you hold them. Whether you choose to hold them for the rest of your life - or whether you choose to release them now - right now, is your's.

Would I rather be depressed?

Or would I rather be happy?
The next time you feel depressed, or just less happy and alive than you would like to be, use our "Could you?

Would you? When?"

technique and see what happens. In fact, if depression is a challenge for you, try using this technique every 15 minutes or so (it will only take you 10 seconds) to release any feelings of stress you are holding. Then just notice the difference you feel at the end of the day - and this is only our very simple, most basic technique!
