Cholesterol Reducing Drugs - Do the Risks Outweigh the Benefits?

When it comes to treating high cholesterol, you are often prescribed certain drugs by your doctors. These are called statin drugs. The statins are a specific class of drugs, which are more formally referred to as pharmaceuticals, and are used to reduce cholesterol levels.

Some studies have been made in this area.

There are many accusations that are made against the use of statin drug dangers and some of these dangers include: peripheral neuropathy, muscle damage, elevated liver enzyme indices, plasma fibrinogen levels and including kidney damage. You must remember however that these are only allegations at this point and not set in stone.

Statin drug dangers in the United States are all due to the seven statin drugs on the market. There are those that are in the fermentation group which are lovastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin. Next there are those that are in the synthetic group which are atorvastatin, fluvastatin, rusovastatin and cerivastatin. Some of the brand names of these same drugs are: Zocor, Lipitor and Pravachol. Those in the fermentation group seem to be more effective in lowering LDL levels.

Without question there have been a number of deaths that have been related to the use statin drugs. Separating them however, is in part a job for the experts and in part a challenge that is actually caused by the experts. With you now knowing this, you must do more than simply read what the media reports on the deaths that are related to any specific medication.

The media are journalists and newscasters and it is not their job to diagnose the causes of deaths.. They are not medical specialists either and are therefore not equipped to do so. To better understand the real statin drug dangers and the implications for you, consult your physician and assess the chances of these major side effects.

If you do feel that you would benefit from using any of the drugs mentioned here for controlling your cholesterol levels, your doctor is your first place to go. If your doctor gives you the ok, you should then follow the instructions to the letter. Misusing your medication can be fatal.

You should also keep following your diet and exercise plan because the drugs can only do so much to help you. In the end, you have to help yourself too.

Dr. Conrad Maulfair Reveals the Real Story About Cholesterol

"Contrary to popular belief, cholesterol is not fat," says Dr. Conrad Maulfair, director of the Maulfair Medical Clinic in Topton, Pa. "Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced by the liver and also ingested through foods we eat. It often has fatty acids contained in it and therefore it is considered to be fat, but it is not fat in and of itself."

According to Dr. Maulfair, up to 80 percent of cholesterol is used to make cholic acid, which is essential in bile salts that are in turn necessary for digestion and absorption of fat from the diet.

Additionally, cholesterol is used to make the hormones progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. There is also a significant amount of cholesterol in the skin that helps the skin to resist water absorption and water evaporation. The presence of cholesterol in the skin also helps to decrease the penetration of toxic agents such as solvents.

According to Dr. Maulfair, "Perhaps one of the most important roles of cholesterol is in the formation and maintenance of cellular function through the integrity of cell membranes, as well as many of the membranes of the other structures within the cell - including the organelles that produce energy." He indicates that membrane integrity is essential for life, health, and the prevention of disease. "Here is a substance that is, in fact, a health-enhancing life necessity but that is purported to be life threatening," says Dr. Maulfair. "Cholesterol has gotten a bad rap. We are told that we eat too much cholesterol in our diet and that elevated levels in the blood cause hardening of the arteries that, in turn, cause heart attacks and strokes. Low fat diets are prescribed and if that isn't effective, cholesterol lowering drug therapy is prescribed."

Dr. Maulfair says that this philosophy has been touted for so long as scientific fact that it is accepted without question by the majority of physicians and patients, despite the fact that there are thousands and thousands of people who have low cholesterol levels in their blood and have blocked arteries all over their bodies, and those who have elevated cholesterol levels without any problems.

Dr. Maulfair notes the important distinction between LDL and HDL cholesterol. "The LDL structure (fatty acids with protein) is the primary source of plague in hardening of the arteries. The HDL form of lipoprotein (protein with fat attached) is not the type of lipoprotein which contributes to plague build up and actually helps to lower the fat in the area by carrying it away from tissues."

According to Dr. Maulfair, LDL cholesterol in its natural form is not inherently bad, but that changes sometimes take place that alter its form. "The process that alters the natural LDL is called oxidation, and is caused by free radicals," says Dr. Maulfair. "This damage can be prevented by utilizing anti- oxidants."

He concludes, "To summarize, LDL cholesterol/ fatty acid is normal in the body and has a function. When it becomes altered by free radical damage it is transformed into a detrimental form. The native or normal LDL can pass freely through tissues, such as the lining of arteries. The damaged LDL cannot and gets stuck in the artery wall. The scientific evidence of this has been known for years and continues to proliferate."

Best Ways To Lower Cholesterol Naturally

If you want to stay fit and healthy, you should keep an eye on your cholesterol intake. There are natural ways of lowering cholesterol if it is out of control. The first natural way is by taking your diet seriously. There are also dietary supplements that will help you lower your cholesterol. For diets high in saturated fats, eating more fiber rich foods may help decrease your cholesterol level.

This is a great place to start in getting your body healthy and in shape.

The natural ways of lowering cholesterol are easy to maintain as long as you are patient and willing to follow a few rules. Eat more vegetables and vegetable oils. Increase your intake of plant sterols in your body through yogurts, fortified margarines, salad dressings, cream cheese. This will also increase your phytostanols. Plant sterols are also available in supplement form. Although not hard to find, they can be a little pricey, but ultimately an easy, effective, and convenient natural way to lower cholesterol.

Lestrin is also a plant sterol available in supplements which is made available in pharmacies, stores, independent chemists and health food stores. People have claimed that garlic and nuts have no effect in lowering cholesterol, but there is also a percentage that proves they help reduce cholesterol in our body.

Low in saturated fats, nuts, especially walnuts are particularly helpful for reducing cholesterol more than expected. This may be a high-fat food, but it is rich in monosaturated and polyunsaturated fat. Scientists have shown that these supplements contain plant proteins which affect cholesterol levels.

Omega 3 fatty acids help lower your cholesterol easily. Fish oil supplements are suitable and effective to increase the good cholesterol especially stable fish oil. This does a better job than the ordinary fish oil we find in the market.

Red yeast rice is known to be the most effective way to fight LDL. This is considered the best dietary agent of it all. Red yeast rice is available in the form of cholestin which is a dietary supplement. In recent studies, it has been proven that cholestin has lowered cholesterol effectively as statins. This is so because cholestin contains an amount of natural statin which helps prevent the increase in cholesterol.

Fresh fish is the best delicacy for the summer season and the best thing is that it can help in lowering cholesterol magnificently.

If you are suffering from high cholesterol, you should first consult your primary care physician before making any changes in your diet.

Lowering Cholesterol Through The Foods You Eat

If you have high cholesterol and you are thinking of lowering your cholesterol level, don't worry because you can do it yourself and a lot of other people are also experiencing the same problem. This may be a tough job but it will be worth it in the end. There are several ways and steps to be healthy. If you want to be serious, you must closely follow each step.

Actually, there are two kinds of cholesterol in your body, HDL and LDL. The difference between the two is that HDL is the cholesterol that is bad for you and LDL is the healthy one. An increase in blood cholesterol is very common in most people. Lowering cholesterol takes discipline to follow some of these helpful tips:

1. Eat fish. This is an effective way to easily lower cholesterol. Salmon is a good choice because it is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seed is also a good source of Omega-3.

2. If you love desserts, try to limit them and choose healthier ones. Eating graham crackers, fat-free frozen yogurt, and angel food cake is a nice alternative. Set aside the mouth-watering desserts you have been eyeing.

3. You should eat foods that are rich in fiber. Oatmeal, vegetables, beans, fruits, wheat bread and some cereals are examples of foods that have high fiber.

4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. They are the natural foods that contain no cholesterol at all. You can eat a lot of them without the slightest chance of cholesterol.

5. You must avoid fast foods such as French fries and all the food that is cooked in a deep fryer. These are the foods with the fattiest ingredients. They are dipped into oil and absorb too much oil. Although they are tempting, it is worth the sacrifice. Stay away from burgers too, or reserve them for an occasional special treat.

6. If you like salad, try and find a new salad dressing, which is cholesterol friendly. Most salad dressing is full of cholesterol and Trans fats. Maybe a choice of vinegar with lemon juice or Olive oil will be a good option. Bacon bits, egg yolks and croutons should be avoided.

7. If you really can't get away from burgers and steak, you can grill them in your backyard and use lean cuts of meat instead. This type of cooking prevents reduces the amount of fat in the meat and barbecuing is fun and enjoyable which makes eating pleasurable.

8. If you want a nice healthy sandwich without the fats, have whole wheat bread with a mix of lean turkey and lots of vegetables.

Remember to skip the salami, hot dogs and of course the mayo. This type of food is highly processed with cholesterol and fats.

Now after all the worries, you realize that adjusting your diet isn't going to be too hard at all right? Lowering cholesterol is not a tough job. It just takes patience and dedication and you will have the your levels under control in no time.

Remember, it is important to consult your physician before making any significant changes in diet or lifestyle. Always follow their advice regarding the control of cholesterol levels.

Proven Ways To Lower Cholesterol In Our Body

There are, in fact, many ways of lowering cholesterol which can also lower the risks of stroke and heart attacks. The most effective and proven way is by maintaining a healthy diet. This has been done by most people who have experienced cholesterol level problems.

Following a healthy diet is very effective in lowering cholesterol if you learn the appropriate dietary fat recommended. This starts by reducing the intake of cholesterol-rich foods. If you are on a diet, you need to include fresh fruits, dietary fiber, and vegetables;

especially the soluble fiber which plays a big role in reducing cholesterol in your body. If you can't make it on a diet, you can try another option practiced by people who can't manage to restrict their food choices. That is by taking regular exercise like swimming, jogging or walking. These are essential for maintaining the flexibility and strength of your cardiovascular system. This is also effective in lowering the amount of cholesterol contained in your blood.

You can also use discipline in lowering cholesterol by quitting smoking and controlling and normalizing the alcohol you intake. These are the best ways to lower cholesterol. If you are on a diet but spend every night drinking, all your dietary efforts will be wasted. It is important to keep every intake in balance so that you can easily see changes in your body.

There are also some natural options that you can use in order to preserve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are situations when you will really need to reduce your cholesterol intake even without the intake of the statin drug which is a prescription used to lower cholesterol. The statin medication works by interfering with an enzyme which is needed for the body to produce cholesterol. If the enzyme is reduced, the medicine will be able to lower the cholesterol.

Onion juice is helpful in lowering cholesterol and at the same time it also works as a tonic for the nervous system. Onion juice also cleans your blood and helps your digestive system to flow freely. It does not only focus in lowering your cholesterol level but is also cures insomnia and keeps your heart action in normal condition.

High cholesterol levels can also be indicators of more serious health problems, which particularly focus in the cardio-vascular areas. It is important that you know if you have signs and symptoms of diseases and you can take early measures to prevent them.

Checking your cholesterol levels is important so that you know your condition. If you notice your cholesterol level rising, you should take steps in lowering your cholesterol so that you can maintain a healthy balance. To some people this will take a lot of sacrifice but in a few weeks or in a month, they will be able to regain their cholesterol level and it will be worth it in the end.

If you have high cholesterol, you should consult your primary care physician prior to making any changes in your diet or lifestyle.

Cholesterol. . . not bad after all.

Do you know that total amount fat and cholesterol in the diet whether high or low, has no real link to heart diseases as widely believed? Rather it is the type of fat in diet that matters. There are bad fats that increase risk to certain diseases and good fats that lower this risk. Cholesterol in food is not exactly a health problem.

The medical community as a whole has yet to make any definitive judgment on the allegations that are not fully corroborated studies. Some of the common complaints of side effects include memory loss, personality changes, irritability and muscle pain. These are not occurring to all who take them, but they are occurring.

Infact dietary cholesterol is not exactly linked to heart disease. Heart disease may be caused by high blood cholesterol i.e. the cholesterol circulating in your blood. Surprisingly, amount of diet cholesterol is not linked to blood cholesterol levels. The biggest influence on blood cholesterol level is the mix of types of fats in the diet. That is the mix of saturated, unsaturated and trans fats.

Cholesterol is a wax like substance made by the liver. It falls in the family of nutrients called lipids. It is used to construct and in the functioning of cell membranes and other organelles. Once synthesized by the liver, it is linked to proteins called lipoproteins which are then released into the blood stream to supply all the body cells with cholesterol.

Blood Cholesterol

Too much cholesterol in the blood can result to it building inside arteries. These deposits are called plaque. They can actually narrow arteries enough to slow or block blood flow. This condition is called atherosclerosis. This unfortunately occurs in arteries close to the heart. Plaque at times raptures causing blood clots that can lead to a heart attack, stroke or sudden death.

The good news is that cholesterol build up can be slowed, stopped and even possibly reversed.

In the cholesterol transport in blood, low density lipoproteins i.e. LDL carry cholesterol from liver into the blood to supply the body so when LDL is in excess, it can be deposited on arteries. Hence LDL cholesterol is called bad cholesterol.

On the other hand high density lipoproteins i.e. HDL carry cholesterol from the blood back to the liver which processes cholesterol for elimination from the body. So, high HDL reduces the chance of excess cholesterol in the blood being deposited on arteries. Therefore HDL is called the good cholesterol.

This then means a higher level LDL and lower levels of HDL shows a high risk of heart disease. An important determinant of blood cholesterol is specific fats in diet. Research shows that there are some types of fats that are clearly good for blood cholesterol and others that are bad. Though dietary cholesterol does not affect, blood cholesterol as badly as it is widely believed.

Fat And Cholesterol

Mono-saturated fats e.g. olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, cashewnuts, almond, peanuts and generally most nuts and avocados. All these lower the LDL and rise the HDL meaning they are good sources of fat.

Poly unsaturated fats e.g. corn, safflower, cotton seed oil, fish. These lower LDL and also rise HDL. These are also excellent sources of fat.

Saturated fat e.g. found in whole milk, butter, cheese, ice-cream, red meat, chocolate, coconut, coconut milk and coconut oil all raise both LDL and HDL. Not really good sources as they raise both the good and bad cholesterol. Trans fats whch consist of mainly margarines, vegetable shortenings, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, deep fried chips, many fast foods, as well as most commercially baked foods. All these raise LDL meaning it is the worst source of fats. And funnily probably the most consumed.

Formally, eggs demonized for high cholesterol level are now proving scientifically that they are not directly linked to increase in heart disease in healthy individuals. Its moderate use as food is encouraged. It further contains extra nutrients e.g. proteins, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

But diabetic and high cholesterol individuals should proceed with caution. Diabetics can have 2 - 3 eggs a week, while high cholesterol individuals should avoid the egg yolk due to its high cholesterol.

The poorer sources of fat i.e. saturated fats are mainly found in animal based foods. So it's advisable to eat the leanest form of beef more often than the fatty cuts. Trans fats are produced by heating liquid vegetable oil in pressure of hydrogen i.e. hydrogenation. The more hydrogenated the harder it is at room temperature. These trans fats are used in many snacks, processed foods.

The better sources of fat and consequently those that lower blood cholesterol are plant based.

So, what really matters more in your diet or nutrition is not quantity of fat but rather the type. Infact, there is evidence that high intake of unsaturated fats lower risk of heart attack. Fish an important source of the polysaturated fat known as omega-3 has received much attention in lowering risk of heart disease.

This is so much so that the American Heart Association currently recommends that everyone should eat at least two servings of fish a week. Monosaturated fats have also been related to reduced cancer.

There is also a misconception that the more fat you eat the more weight you gain, so completely cut down on fat. As much as the first statement is true to some extent, the most prudent thing to do to cut weight is take in fewer calories than you use in a day. This you do by reducing your daily portion without eliminating any nutrient and increasing your exercising.

Basically to keep healthy fat-wise choose liquid vegetable oils, or soft tub margarines with little or no trans-fat. Reduce intake of commercially prepared food e.g. fast food, snacks and the like.
