Cholesterol and TGs Are You

More coming soon! Cholesterol is a fat-like substances made by you body. Although the cells of your body need some cholesterol, excess can build up in your blood vessels. When this happens it can cause your blood vessels to narrow which in turn reduces blood flow to your heart.

Triglycerides (TGs) is a type of fat found in your blood and stored in you body as fat.

There is "good" cholesterol HDL and there is LDL which is "bad" cholesterol. HDL helps take cholesterol out of your arteries so that it can be removed from your body. LDL can build up in the walls of your arteries which can reduce blood flow. High levels of LDL may cause heart disease. High levels of TGs can also increase your risk of heart disease.

Who is more likely to have high cholesterol? Any adult 20 or older can have high cholesterol; usually there are no symptoms. If some of your family members have it, you may also. If that is the case, tell your doctor so you can get a plan to lower it; one that will work for you. You should also have your triglycerides checked. With your cholesterol and triglycerides both high, it puts you at a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. Diet, exercise, and medicine can help to lower them.

You can take a simple blood test to see if your cholesterol is high and also to find out your triglycerides level. Anyone over the age of 20 should have their cholesterol checked at least once every 5 years. To keep your cholesterol at a healthy level and to lower your risk of heart attack and stroke you should:

Eat a healthy diet.

Have your cholesterol checked.

Take your medicine if your doctor has prescribed it.

Here are some more facts you need to know. More than half of American adults have a cholesterol level that should be treated. Any adult can have high cholesterol. One in 5 American adults has a cholesterol number over 240. Changing your diet and exercising can help to lower both your cholesterol and triglycerides.

Lose Weight, Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol with the Show-Me! Diet

If you would like to find out whether you are one of the 80 percent of people who can control high blood pressure or cholesterol with diet alone, have your doctor give you your current numbers. Follow my Show-Me! Diet for just two weeks, then have your doctor re-check your cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.

The only foods you eat on the SHOW ME! diet are oatmeal for breakfast, and whole-meal salads for lunch and dinner (see the recipe below).

You won't need to go hungry, because you decide on the portion size. Don't stuff yourself, but eat until you are comfortably full and satisfied. If you prefer frequent small meals and snacks, that's fine, too; just divide your salads up and eat as often as you like. You can also have oatmeal at other times of the day if you wish.

Breakfast instructions:

Use a long-cooking oatmeal (rolled, steel cut, Scottish or Irish style oats.) Do not use quick-cooking or instant types. To save time, cook up a large batch -- enough for several days or a week -- following the package instructions. Store the leftovers in a refrigerator container, and reheat each day's portion in a microwave dish.

Flavor your oatmeal with a little cinnamon or nutmeg, and add a handful of raisins or other dried fruit to the pot if you wish. You may also add fresh fruit - up to one cup of the fruit of your choice - but eat the fruit with the oatmeal, not alone as a snack. If you like milk on your oatmeal, use skim milk, nonfat yogurt, or a low-fat soy milk or other vegetarian milk. Do not drink it as a beverage; this is for your oatmeal only.

Note: If you cannot eat oatmeal for some reason, substitute brown rice or another whole grain, flavored and served the same way as oatmeal. Look for brown rice with at least 3 grams of fiber. Or try Kashi Breakfast Pilaf, a mixture of whole grains that is widely available and delicious.

For breakfast, lunch, dinner, and anytime in between, beverages must contain NO calories. Use water (plain, flavored, or bubbly; tap water is fine), tea, or any other calorie-free drink you like.Once you have proven to yourself and your doctor that you can control your blood pressure and cholesterol with diet, you'll need to learn how to apply this way of eating for the rest of your life. Visit my web site for the research behind this program, complete instructions, menus and dozens of recipes to show you that eating this way is not only easy, it's delicious and satisfying.

Mix & Match Salad Recipe

Mix & Match Salads are whole meals in a salad bowl. Start with any lettuce or salad greens you like, and add ANY other vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and other foods from the list below. Try to get several different bright colors in the bowl, including

something red, orange or yellow. Here's just one example:

2 Romaine lettuce hearts, sliced crosswise into 1/2" strips

1 10-ounce box grape (tiny) tomatoes

1 6-ounce jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained

1 ripe avocado, cut in 1/2" chunks

1 red bell pepper, cut in 1/4" strips

1 3-ounce can red salmon

1/4 cup shredded Romano or Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon Cajun spice blend, or to taste

2 tablespoons rice vinegar or light wine vinegar

Toss all ingredients together in a salad bowl and serve.

2-3 servings

That's just one of endless possible combinations. Start with 3-4 cups of salad greens per person. Then add whatever amount you wish of vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruits, spices and seasonings You can also add limited amounts of the following:

Seafood – maximum of 6 ounces (2 3-ounce servings) per day

Cheese – 1 ounce of dry (low-fat) cheese, counts as a dairy serving, maximum 3 per day

Nuts & Seeds – maximum of 1/4 cup (2 2-tablespoon servings) per day

Oils - Up to 1 tablespoon of olive oil in your dressing if you like, or use your favorite low-calorie bottled dressing

Use your Mix & Match Salads twice a day on the Show-Me! Diet, or any time you want an easy, healthful meal.

The Impact of High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol Levels

High blood pressure and cholesterol levels are important factors that can have a significant impact on your overall health. Many people have blood pressure and cholesterol levels that are beyond the desired range. Such levels affect not only aspects of your general state of health, but also the higher premiums on life insurance that many people have to pay due to elevated levels of blood pressure and cholesterol.

Almost a quarter of the adult American population have cholesterol levels that are higher than normal. This is very dangerous for your health and can affect you in a variety of ways. Therefore, checking your cholesterol level on a regular bass and following a treatment to lower it when necessary is very useful.

The liver produces an amount of cholesterol that is necessary for normal body functions. However, an elevated level may cause heart diseases and other maladies. Most experts advise you to keep your cholesterol level below 200, with the low density lipoprotein level below 100. A slightly increased level is not usually a reason to be concerned. If a slightly increased cholesterol level is combined with other negative factors, such as high blood pressure or being overweight, the impact it has on your health is greater. A severely increased cholesterol level, even if other factors are within normal limits, can be very dangerous. It has been proven that people with a cholesterol level of 240 or more are twice more likely to suffer from heart disease than those with normal cholesterol levels.

Blood Pressure

Apart from high cholesterol, a high blood pressure can also lead to heart disease or several other health problems and may even put your life at risk. The normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels are dependent on your gender and age. Normal adult blood pressure is generally considered as 130 over 85. A hypertensive person is someone who exceeds the upper limit of normal blood pressure level. You are considered hypertensive if your blood pressure is above 140 over 90. However, if it is only slightly above these values, it is considered a low-grade hypertension and generally it is not very dangerous. Nevertheless, it is more dangerous when combined with other negative factors, such as obesity or high cholesterol level.

People with high blood pressure and cholesterol levels are more likely to suffer from several illnesses, such as heart disease or Alzheimers. If you have high cholesterol or blood pressure, you are also more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke. They two are correlated to one another, as a high cholesterol level also increases the risk for high blood pressure. A balanced diet, with low-fat foods and avoiding the use of alcohol are very helpful in dealing with such problems. There are also medications that can help you decrease both your high pressure and cholesterol levels and keep them under control.

Reducing Your Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol has been a major measuring stick of health since the seventies. Heart attacks, strokes, and other serious complications can arise from having unhealthy cholesterol levels. The problem is that the cure can be more dangerous than the original problem. New, high-tech cholesterol drugs have been associated with some very serious health problems. Yet, when your cholesterol levels are too high, you aren't always informed on exactly how these levels change and what your options are.

But these medicines are attached with array of side effects which can give a dealt blow to the human body. The best way to avoid cholesterol is to eat healthy and green food. It has been noticed that vegetables and fruits have no cholesterol in comparison to meat and dairy products.

Cholesterol levels themselves are only symptoms.

The liver is your key organ in controlling cholesterol levels, as this organ has the absolute final word on the levels that doctors use to determine you cholesterol. A liver that is busy cleaning out chemicals, preservatives, and other unhealthy foods from your diet is too busy to control your cholesterol properly. Flushing toxins from your liver and starting with a fresh new way of eating are the most potent means of bringing your cholesterol levels under control.

The diets currently recommended by most major associations simply don't go far enough.

You need a diet that is delicious, safe, healthy, and energizing, and which will bring you greater results than the diets you may have been presented with in the past. There are a lot of myths about dieting and diets, and why counting the calories, carbs, fats, and cholesterols that you intake is more often a mere distraction from the spirit of healthy eating.

Second to this is being certain that the liver is not physically hindered in its mechanisms. This means having a physician examine the musculature surrounding the liver, ensuring that circulation is not cut off by a rigid, tight musculature.

The goal should be to seek a physicians counselling until your cholesterol levels are safe enough so that you can be removed from your prescription routine, or to help you avoid a prescription routine altogether. Ask questions to discover the true processes behind cholesterol formation, behind plaque formations, and consider healthy options for dealing with your cholesterol levels.
