Zetia helps lower cholesterol.

Zetia can work on it's own or with statins like Lipitor, Zocor or Crestor to help lower your cholesterol. Statins work mainly with your liver to decrease production of chloesterol and reduce it in your bloodstream. However, Zetia works in your digestive tract to help block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food.

Staring an exercise regime may not be a the top of your list of things to do.

What kind of results can I expect with taking Zetia?

Zetia, along with a healthy diet, decreased bad cholesterol by as much as 30 points, based on an average Bad Cholesterol of 167 mg/dL. Taking Zetia , along with diet and a statin, has been shown to lower Bad Cholesterol another 36 points. In a clinical study, people who combined Zetia with their statin medication reduced Bad Cholesterol by an additional 25% (36 points) compared with 4% (6 points) in people who added a placebo (a pill with no medication). These are average results and individual results may vary.

Can diet and exercise help lower cholesterol levels?

While diet and exercise are a good start, combining these two steps with a cholesterol-lowering medication like Zetia will get you a better result.

Many people find they have a problem with high cholesterol simply because their bodies produce too much of it. But eating foods that are high in cholesterol or fat will also add to the problem. Below are some tips for eating healthier.

But if you start off gradually and choose something you enjoy, you may find it will become part of your daily routine. Of course you should always speak with your doctor before starting an exercise routine. Below are some great exercise tips.

For people who enjoy being more active:

Does Zetia have any side effects?

There have been few side effects reported while taking Zetia, but they may include tiredness and stomach pain. Rare side effects may be unexplained muscle pain or weakness - these should be discussed with your doctor right away.

Prevent and control high blood cholesterol through a 5,000 years old ancient healing system.

Ayurveda is an ancient healing system from India that dates back some 5,000 years or more. It encompasses a wide range of techniques to treat illness and encourage general wellbeing, including: Herbs, Yoga, Acupuncture, also calledmarmapuncture, Diet, Breathing exercises and Massage.

According to Ayurveda, people with a kaphagenic diet tend to have high cholesterol. To lower cholesterol levels and prevent increase in cholesterol levels, Ayurveda recommends the following:

Low Cholesterol friendly food

Watch what you eat. Stick to the kapha-pacifying diet and avoid food high in fat like fatty foods. Do not take cheese, yogurt or high-fat milk. Reduce consumption of sweets, cold foods like ice cream and desserts, and drinks.

Cinnamon and trikatu tea

Drink this tea twice a day to lower cholesterol. Mix ¼ teaspoon of trikatu herbal mixture with 1 teaspoon cinnamon and steep for 10 minutes in a cupful of water. Add honey to taste.

You can also just use ½ teaspoon trikatu with 1 teaspoon honey and drink this 2 to 3 times a dat. It is great for burning ama and the extra kapha, helping to maintain cholesterol.

Garlic

Foods That Lower Weight And Cholesterol

The commitment given to lowering cholesterol is what will determine the level of success in solving this crucial problem. Many people have a high cholesterol level because they consume too much fatty or saturated oil. By changing this aspect, the cholesterol level may be reduced by as much as 20 percent.

Do include onion and garlic in your cooking and food. Also take foods that are natural cholesterol busters. These are, blue corn, oatmeal, quinoa, millet, apples, grapefruit and almonds. Herbs are effective against cholesterol. Include them in your diet or drinks to help bring balance to cholesterol levels.

Lowering HDL cholesterol is without a doubt a huge benefit in bringing total cholesterol down to a safe level. The most important benefits of lowering cholesterol level include: reduces the formation of new cholesterol plaques, eliminates plaques, prevents the rupture of these plaques and decreases the chance of heart attack and stroke.

By changing a bad life style to a healthy diet consisting of the right foods people can improve their health and also reduce weight. Foods that are higher in fiber or starch are the best choice in diets to overcome weight and cholesterol problems.

Some recent studies prove that some foods can assist in the reduction of cholesterol and could be used in diet programs. Cholesterol Lowering Margarine has been recently introduced to the market. This margarine does not affect your HDL, or your good cholesterol and the sterols trick your body into thinking they are cholesterol based and it is not able to absorb them, therefore blocking cholesterol.

Also helping to lower cholesterol are nuts such as almonds and walnuts that have high amounts of monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. A team of researchers from Loma Linda University found that the Mediterranean style diet lowered cholesterol by using walnuts. Oats and barley have played an important role in lowering cholesterol because it has a soluble fiber known as Beta Glucan which is the key for lowering the cholesterol.

High in soluble fiber and pectin are fruits and vegetables such as apples, citrus fruit, berries, carrots, apricots, cabbage, and sweet potatoes and it helps in lowering cholesterol.

Olive oil is a mono-saturated fat and studies show that it lowers blood cholesterol. Extra virgin olive oil is better than other varieties.

Soy protein is considered by FDA as efficient on heart disease and also in lowering cholesterol. New research suggests that soy-based shakes can be just as effective as behavioral therapy and even more effective than weight loss medications and it also appears to help lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Dr. James W. Anderson, of the University of Kentucky said in a statement that soy is healthy, and its benefits go beyond weight loss toward increasing overall health even though it may not have a more dramatic effect on people waistline than other nutrition plans.

Recent research has shown that liquid meal replacements are effective in both weight loss and weight maintenance. Soy-based liquid meal replacements, licensed by NutriPharma from Norway had been compared with a milk-based liquid meal replacement in a study of weight loss during a 12-week period. This study was conducted by Dr. James W. Anderson and Dr. Lars H. Hole. Those assigned to the soy-based shakes group consumed five servings of Scan-Diet daily along with fruits and vegetables.

Those in the milk group consumed two servings of Slim-Fast each day and also fruits, vegetables, chicken breast, turkey or other lean meat, two servings each. The volunteer study participants were asked to note their tolerance during the meal-replacements, their physical activity and also food intake. Data about Anderson and Holes study were reported in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. In the third months of study both groups achieved weight loss to about 8.5 percent of initial body weight consuming 3.7 shakes daily which is 74 percent of the recommended amount for the soy group and tow shakes daily for the milk-based group.

This study shows that the weight loss was two times greater than the weight loss reported among individuals who use medications. Also the soy group registered a considerable lower cholesterol level and a reduction in their blood level of triglycerides while there was no change among those in the milk group. Dr Andersons conclusion was that soy protein is very effective at lowering cholesterol but the milk-based shakes are almost as effective for weight loss and also better tolerated by many people.

Lower Your Cholesterol Levels, Naturally

Cholesterol is a fatty substance present in the human body, 80% of which is manufactured by the liver. The other 20% comes from your diet such as meat, eggs and dairy products. We have always considered cholesterol to be bad. But that is not the case; there are two types of cholesterol, good cholesterol - HDL (High-density lipoproteins) and bad cholesterol - LDL (Low-density lipoproteins). High levels of LDL cholesterol present in the body enter the inner walls of the arteries and harden it, leading to coronary artery disease. Similarly, high levels of HDL cholesterol minimize the harmful effects of LDL cholesterol. Some measurements you can keep in mind to maintain healthy LDL cholesterol level.

Less than 100 mg/dL would be optimal 100 to 129 mg/dL is near optimal/ above optimal 130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline high 160 to 189 mg/dL is considered high 190 mg/dL and above is very high Regular check up or screening of your cholesterol level is very important. It is recommended for men and women of 20 years or above to get the test done every five years. This kind of screening helps to keep your health in check. It also helps if the patient has a family history of diseases like diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular disease.

Tips to remember

Do your exercises regularly to keep your heart healthy. It also helps in burning out the excess fat you have been carrying around.

Avoid trans fatty acids like French fries, cookies, cakes and many other fried fast foods. Consume fewer carbohydrates by avoiding sugar, flour, potatoes and white rice. Avoid food which contains too much cholesterol like egg yolk, liver, kidney, brain etc. Stop smoking, it increases HDL levels by seven points.

If your cholesterol levels are very high, your doctor will prescribe medication, probably statins - a family of very powerfull drugs with proven efficacy in reducing blood cholesterol levels. In this case, in the first instance, just keep taking the pills! There's a lot of discussion about statins, their dosage, their side effects and I don't intend to go into too much detail in this article but it's often recommended that you may also want to start taking supplements of co-enzyme Q10 and of niacin.

Natural Ways to Increase HDL

Red wine consumed in reasonable quantity gives a positive result. It contains antioxidants such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir that slows down oxidation of HDL and LDL cholesterol. By drinking wine HDL level does not shoot up, but it contains higher level of various types of blood fats, thus making it useful for the body.

Drinking orange juice every day increases HDL level by nearly 21%. This is possible due to the presence of flavonoids.

Kidney and red beans are another source to increase HDL level. They contain low-glycemic carbohydrates which do not require insulin spikes during digestion. Eating fish several times a week is very useful in increasing HDL level as it contains omega-3 fatty acids. Fishes like sardine, salmon, sea bass, herring and many more are some of the sources of good cholesterol. If you do not like fish, you can have fish oil supplements. Olive oil contains the highest number of mono-saturated fats. Having 1-2 teaspoons in your daily diet would help you tremendously. Oat bran lowers LDL and increases HDL. Studies have shown that two ounces of oat bran per day helps in reducing 16% LDL and 15% increase in HDL.

Half raw onion per day increases HDL level by 30%.

Soy products increase HDL level thereby decreasing LDL.

Soluble fiber found in fruits like apples, grapes and citrus fruits are useful in increasing HDL level.

Guggul lipid a native herb used mainly for Ayurvedic medicine also helps in maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Green tea lowers LDL levels by increasing HDL levels.

Eat more fiber and include raw garlic in your diet, these are very useful in lowering cholesterol levels.

What, my cholesterol's high?

Often the diagnosis of high cholesterol levels comes out of the blue. The questions pour in: what does this mean; why; how do I lower my cholesterol? The search for information and for change starts.

Cholesterol in itself isn't bad, in fact, it's essential for good health. The membranes surrounding each of our cells, many hormones and bile which is important for digesting our food - all of these need cholesterol and so our bodies will actually make it's own cholesterol.

The problem usually arises when we have a diet that is high in animal products, meat, cream and certain fats. We end up eating a lot more cholesterol than our body needs.

And when we have lots more cholesterol than we need -imagine pouring hot meat fat down a sink, watch it cool and congeal- once it has solidified and stuck like glue, there's a blocked sink just waiting for a plumber! Too much cholesterol has a similar effect on your blood vessels.

So why didn't we notice?
The thing is having a high cholestorl level doesn't really have any symptoms. The end effect is usually something very serious - and sure we notice that! Angina, chest pain, stroke, heart-attack - these are the end results for some people.

For many of us, the first time we know we have high cholesterol levels is the results from a routine blood test. If this is how you found out, great! It means you still have time to make changes before something worse happens to make you stop and take notice.

So what do you do next?
Well, one thing's for certain - you'll end up reading your food labels a lot more carefully than ever before and believe me, it's all in the small print. Who thought that having a diagnosis of high cholesterol could have you rushing to get your eyes tested too!

You can then work to reduce the amount of cholesterol that you eat to bring your body back into balance. Modifying your diet to reduce cholesterol levels is really easy - and it's not. In general, the simple advice is: decrease the amount of red or processed meat you eat (steak, burgers, sausages, salami) and increase the amount of vegetables in your diet. If you do this, you're heading in the right direction.

The real problem is looking out for the hidden fats. Once you start looking you'll be amazed - actually horrified - at how much fat there is in many cakes, pastries and pies. Even your regular latte or cappucino can be hiding hidden fats - the milk and cream are dairy products, derived from animals so potentially high in cholesterol. But don't panic, the simple act of asking for "skinny" will reduce your fat intake without having too much of an impact on your taste buds.

Sometimes we try to make drastic changes in our diet, we live, (miserably) for a week and then give in and go back to our old ways.
As a first step try small changes in your habits· reduce red meat, dairy products (milk, cream and butter) and processed food· increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat - remember "5 a day" is proven to reduce your risk of cancer too so this way you're onto a win-win situation· ask for "skinny" - choose low fat milk, cream, spreads.

There's so much more to share about changing habits, healthy eating, lowering cholesterol and even - yes, even why you should try to increase you HDL cholesterol levels.
