Guggulu, commonly known as guggul in Hindi language, is very important and trustworthy herb in ayurvedic system of medicine. Commiphora mukul, biological name of guggulu or Indian bedellium as in English language, is a small shrub or a tree, which reaches a maximum of 4 - 6 ft in height. It bears thorns on its branches. It possess small leaves those very similar to that of a neem tree. Its flowers are of red in colour and bears fruit that are oval in shape and pulpy in nature. Guggulu is the gum resin that is being excreted by bark of the plant. It is generally found everywhere in India.

· Menstrual disturbances and painful menses are another disease where guggulu gives wonderful results and has been a part of many classical ayurvedic medicines.

Cholesterol and Women: Debunking the Myths
Cholesterol is a waxy fat found in the human body and transported in the blood. About 80% of cholesterol in humans is made internally by the liver, while the other 20% comes from consumption of foods.
These include high-density lipoproteins (HDL), considered "good" cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), considered "bad" cholesterol.
In the body, cholesterol combines with protein to create lipoproteins. High amounts of this bad cholesterol clog up the blood vessels, often leading to heart disease and stroke.
Just as affected
Many women believe that cholesterol is a man's problem and should not be of great concern to them. However, according to the American Heart Association, more than 51 million women have high cholesterol. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in American women, killing more women than all cancers combined.
The myth may stem from fact that women generally possess high levels of high-density lipoproteins before menopause. As the healthy cholesterol, HDL carries excess low-density lipoproteins from the blood system to be excreted in the liver. The female sex hormone estrogen raises the HDL level, making heart disease less likely for premenopausal women. However, this advantage is lost as they reach menopause. Older women should consider themselves just as much at risk as men, especially if they are overweight and/or physically inactive.
Hormone replacement not a solution
The fact that estrogen increases HDL and lowers LDL led many to believe that hormone replacement therapy could be a viable anti-cholesterol tactic. However, in recent years this view has continuously been challenged. Studies such as the Estrogen Replacement and Atherosclerosis Trial and the Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study have shown that hormone replacement is less effective than statin drugs in improving cholesterol levels. Results also showed that there is no clear cardiac benefit and that in the first year, this treatment may in fact increase the chance of heart disease.
Hormone replacement therapy is not considered safe and has been additionally linked to cancer. As of now, there is absolutely no compelling reason to use it to fight cholesterol. Other remedies should be chosen.
Danger of heart attacks
Another element that goes unrecognized among some women is the deadliness of heart attacks. Many men have heart attacks earlier in life than women and recover, which may have led to the formation of this myth. However, statistics show that 38 percent of women are likely to die in the year following their first heart attack, compared to 25% of men. Women are also twice as likely to become disabled or suffer a second attack within six years.
Your cholesterol profile

It is also important to watch the level of triglycerides, another form of fat found in the body that can be just as detrimental as LDL. Triglycerides are particularly powerful in women and have frequently been overlooked. Women should make sure to follow their full blood fat profile, including the HDL and LDL levels, the ratio between the two and the triglyceride level.
It's up to you
Today's diagnostic tests for clogged vessels are less effective for women, since they look for large blockages. Women tend to have plaque spread more evenly along the vessel walls. They also often lack some of the traditional, more noticeable symptoms of clogged arteries, such as chest pain and difficulty breathing.
Preventive action is vital for those who want to stay healthy. Women must aggressively pursue information and testing. They must take care to avoid foods that are rich in saturated fats and trans fatty acids, and they must keep active. Half an hour of walking or swimming a day goes a long way.

Alpha linolenic acid is a type of omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon. Studies showed that flaxseed can lower total and LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) levels. Flaxseed may also help lower blood triglyceride and blood pressure. In addition, it may also keep platelets from becoming sticky therefore reducing the chance of a heart attack. The Heart-Healthy Side of Flax
"Essential" means we must consume it, because our bodies cannot manufacture it. Essential fatty acids are important for cell membranes, blood pressure regulation, and other functions. Alpha-linolenic acid is an omega-3, similar to some of the fatty acids in fish oil. Like aspirin, omega-3s may reduce blood clotting, thus lessening the chance of a fatal heart attack. Flaxseeds and their oil may also lower total blood cholesterol, as well as LDL ("bad") cholesterol. But that should come as no big surprise, since any highly unsaturated oil will do that, particularly if substituted for saturated fats. The fiber in flaxseeds may also help against cholesterol, since it is soluble (similar to that in oats).
Moderately include flax seed in your diet. Indeed, a lot of food products contain flax seed such as bread, cereal and bakery goods. Bakers may use flax seed flour or include flax seed in baking.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Good health requires the right ratio of Omega 3 fatty acids to Omega 6 fatty acids in the diet. The ideal ratio is around 1:2. The average american diet is more around 1:20 to 1:50, with way too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3. The ratio present in Flaxseed oil is about 4:1. So flaxseed oil is a good source of Omega 3. You should consume every day small portions of flaxseed or flaxseed oil. However if flaxseed oil is used in the diet for long time, without other oils, it may cause Omega 6 LA deficiency symptoms.
Women, Lower Your Cholesterol Today!
Among the women given flaxseed, blood levels of total cholesterol dropped 6% while no reduction in cholesterol occurred in the women given the wheat. In women on the flaxseed regimen, blood levels of both LDL and HDL cholesterol dropped by 4.7%, and triglycerides dropped 12.8%, resulting in only a minor reduction in the ratio of "bad" to "good" cholesterol. However, in the women given flaxseed, blood levels of apolipoprotein A-1 and apolipoprotein B were reduced by 6 and 7.5% respectively.

Benefits of Flaxseeds
Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flax seed is rich in lignan. Lignan is a type phytoestrogen (antioxidant) and also provides fiber. Researches reveal that lignan in flax seed shows a lot of promise in fighting disease -- including a possible role in cancer prevention especially breast cancer. It is thought that lignan metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors, hence inhibiting the onset of estrogen-stimulated breast cancer.
What Does Flaxseed Contain?
The seeds and oil of the flax plant contain substances which promote good health. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for heart disease. ALA belongs to a group of substances called omega-3 fatty acids.
Lignans are a type of fiber, and at the same time a type of phytoestrogen--a chemical similar to the human hormone estrogen. Flaxseeds are the richest source of lignans. When you eat lignans, bacteria in the digestive tract convert them into estrogen-like substances called enterodiol and enterolactone, which are thought to have anti-tumor effects. Lignans and other flaxseed components may also have antioxidant properties--that is, they may reduce the activity of cell-damaging free radicals. (Flaxseed oil lacks lignans, but some processors add them to their oil.)
Flaxseed Lowers Cholesterol in Postmenopausal Women
At the onset of menopause, a woman's risk of cardiovascular disease drastically increases. Until recently, women were told that conventional hormone replacement therapy (Premarin and progestin) could offer protection against this increased cardiovascular risk, but studies have now conclusively shown that this is not the case. So, what can a woman do to protect her heart during and after menopause?
One simple, yet powerful action a woman can take is to make flaxseed, one of the World's Healthiest Foods, a daily part of her healthy way of eating. A study published in the September 2002 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that flaxseed, a rich source of phytoestrogens called lignans, reduced total cholesterol levels in the blood of postmenopausal women by an average of 6%.
Lowering Cholesterol with Flaxseed!

Taking flaxseed oil for gout may lessen the often sudden and severe joint pain or swelling that is a symptom of this condition.

The Good Cholesterol
HDL is the abbreviation for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. HDL is often referred to as the "good cholesterol". HDL cholesterol helps clear the blood stream of the artery-clogging properties we ingest with too much fried foods, baked goods and red meats. Yet, HDL cannot do an adequate job when the LDL levels in the diet are overwhelmingly high or when we do not take in enough omega-3 fatty acids.
Alpha-linolenic acid is a fatty acid found in many foods. Most, but not all, studies have found that high dietary or blood levels of alpha-linolenic acid correlate with an increased risk of prostate cancer. It is not clear, however, whether this association reflects a cause-effect relationship. Concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid are high in almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, flaxseeds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts.
The Dangers of Too Low Blood Cholesterol
The idea that too much animal fat and a high cholesterol is dangerous to your heart and vessels is nothing but a myth. Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, but a substance vital to the cells of all mammals. Researchers at the University San Diego School of Medicine UCSD point out that high cholesterol in those over 75 years of age is protective, rather than harmful and that low cholesterol is a risk factor for heart. Researchers from the University of Denmark report that about 15% of cholesterol lowering drug users over the age of 50 will suffer from nerve damage as direct result of using statin drugs. USA Today reported that Statins have killed and injured more people than the government has acknowledged.
The high fiber content, lignans and omega-3 qualities in flax seed are natural preventative properties for heart disease. Studies prove that when flax seed is added to the diet, harmful LDL cholesterol drops, while good HDL cholesterol remains or increases. Flaxseed is a whole grain that can be found in health food stores and some supermarkets. It can be sprinkled on food, or is sometimes used in baked goods, such as muffins or bread.
What is So Special with Flaxseed?
Flaxseed contains a substance called alpha linolenic acids. Alpha linolenic acid is omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon. Omega 3 fatty acid is a type of essential fatty acid, which can only be acquired from food.
Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flaxseed is also rich in another substance called lignan, which is a type of phytoestrogen and also provides fiber.
Flaxseeds and Cholesterol
Flaxseeds can help lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure. Several studies indicate that flaxseed oil, as well as ground flaxseeds, can lower cholesterol, thereby significantly reducing the risk of heart disease. Flaxseed oil may also have a protective effect against angina (chest pain) and high blood pressure. In addition, a 5-year study done recently at Boston's Simmons College found that flaxseed oil may be useful in preventing a 2nd heart attack. It may also help prevent elevated blood pressure by inhibiting inflammatory reactions that cause poor circulation and artery-hardening plaque.
Good food, no magic bullet
All plant foods, including flax, have good things to offer. Garlic, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, legumes, and whole grains all have a range of beneficial chemicals. If you want to add flaxseeds to your diet, that's a good idea. But if cheeseburgers are your main source of calories, adding flaxseeds won't help much.
Known as linseed in Europe, flaxseed is prized by health-conscious eaters everywhere due to its abundant omega-3 fatty acid content. Small, oval-shaped flaxseeds come from the flax plant, which is grown in European countries, including France, Belgium, Russia, and Germany. In the United States, flaxseeds are primarily produced in Montana, Minnesota, Texas, and the Dakotas.
Obesity is simply having too much fat for your body mass. It is reported that approximately 65 percent of adults are overweight or obese. Sixty-one million adult Americans are considered obese.

Guggulu is only used after purification (shudhikar) in milk; it should never be used in raw form.
It increases your risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes (type 2), heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease and cancer of the breast, prostate and colon.
It also raises blood cholesterol and triglyceride while lowering HDL "good" cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is linked with lower heart disease and stroke risk, so reducing it tends to raise the risk.
If your child is overweight it also increases their health risks. Type 2 diabetes was once rare in American children--now it accounts for 8 to 45 percent of newly diagnosed diabetes cases in children and adolescents. And, overweight children are more likely to become overweight or obese as adults.
Each year, this disease causes at least 300,000 excess deaths in the U.S., and healthcare costs of American adults that are obese amount to approximately $100 billion.
The tendency toward this condition is fostered by our environment: lack of physical activity combined with high-calorie, low-cost foods.
If maintained, even weight losses as small as 10 percent of body weight can improve your health.
