3. Know How To Read Food Labels

Food labels are divided into two parts - the top half deals with aspects of food you should limit, such as total fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates and protein. The bottom is a summary of those you need, such as vitamins, iron, etc.

 

You may think that you are eating healthy when in reality you are unknowingly taking in cholesterol, fat and calories in reduced levels. Here are a list of some of the claims that we can often find on our food's packaging according to the Food and Drugs Authority -

Newspapers have reported on the drawbacks of having a diet high in fat. High-fat diet has been linked to high cholesterol and ultimately to heart attacks. Hence, people have started avoiding beef and eggs. But cholesterol is not bad. Our body needs it to protect nerves and build new cells and hormones. It is only when we include foods like pizzas, burgers, ice creams, steaks or any food containing animal product that the problem starts. Excess cholesterol settles along the walls of the arteries and can clog them thus, restricting blood flow. This gives rise to angina, heart attack or stroke. It has also been shown that high cholesterol leads to gallstones. There are two types of cholesterol called good cholesterol or HDL and bad cholesterol or LDL. LDL is the cholesterol that clogs the arteries and should be lower while HDL scours the artery walls and removes the harmful LDL and should be higher.

 

Doctors recommend reducing and avoiding high-fat diets containing meat, eggs and dairy products. But you can use the following home remedies for treatment:

 

* Increase the intake of Vitamin E: It is advised to increase your intake of Vitamin E to 400 international units to prevent the oxidation of bad cholesterol where the cholesterol hardens into the arterial plaque thus giving rise to heart attack. * Eat beans: Lima beans, kidney beans, navy beans, soybeans and other legumes have been shown to lower cholesterol as they have a high amount of pectin. Research has shown that people who consume about 11/2 cup of cooked beans a day have decreased their cholesterol levels by 20 percent within three weeks.

 

* Splurge on carrots: Carrots have plenty of pectin, the most useful type of fibre for lowering cholesterol. Having about 2 to 3 carrots a day will reduce cholesterol levels by 10 to 20 percent.

Reduce Cholesterol Risk:A Slightly Different Approach

There was a time when following the accepted traditions was something one did without question. If the tradition of your tribe demanded that a boy face his fears through some horrifying act in order to be recognized as a man then that is exactly what he did.

In the modern world that sort of blind obedience to tradition is a bit more difficult to find. Many of us have grown up in a culture defined by mini revolutions. We question more. If we don't like the answers we receive, we are inclined to stand against the flow... that is, if it suits us.

 

What if we applied a little bit of that revolutionary spirit to cholesterol management? What if we took prevention a little bit more seriously?

 

Lowering cholesterol risk is, of course, serious business. An imbalanced cholesterol profile can lead to a number of chronic heart health issues. I am not debating that issue.

 

Nor am I challenging the accepted methods designed to reduce cholesterol risk. It is important to keep our HDL cholesterol high and our triglycerides within an acceptable range. It is especially important to keep our LDL cholesterol in check. That is why the primary focus of cholesterol management is the reduction of LDL. This is good and proper.

 

But why is LDL cholesterol so important? Well for starters high LDL levels contribute to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Particularly, high LDL levels promote the development of atherosclerosis... that nasty build-up on the inside of our arteries.

So it makes sense to focus on LDL reduction to lower cholesterol risk.

 

Saturated fats negatively influence LDL cholesterol levels. Most cholesterol management focuses on lowering LDL cholesterol. Saturated fats cause LDL levels to rise. So every time we grab that burger on the run - and I love a good burger - we are making it more difficult for our bodies to keep our LDL levels down.

 

But here is a twist that you may not have considered. Evidence has been mounting for some time that the level of LDL cholesterol in our systems may not be what causes atherosclerosis (artery clogging plaque). Rather it is actually the oxidation of LDL that promotes atherosclerosis and therefore CHD. In light of this evidence it is reasonable to assume that therapy should focus on suppressing LDL oxidation as well as lowering LDL levels.

 

Oxidation is a process that happens to our cells in the presence of oxygen. When oxygen comes in contact with certain molecules the reaction leaves some of the atoms with unpaired electrons. They are then known as free radicals. These free radicals attack healthy cells in our bodies doing damage to cell membranes and DNA. The result is improperly functioning cells or even cell death. This process is blamed for many chronic conditions including my favorite ... aging.

 

When LDL cholesterol becomes oxidized it reacts differently than 'healthy' LDL. In short, it builds up on the inside of our arteries.

We have all heard of antioxidants. As the name implies, antioxidants oppose the activities of free radicals. They prevent the process of oxidation. It makes sense then to consider antioxidants as an important part of preventing coronary heart disease.

 

Even if you may not have thought of this it is possible you are already doing something about it. Many of us supplement with vitamin-E for a healthy heart. Vitamin-E has long been recognized as a powerful antioxidant.

 

But vitamin-E alone may not be enough. If you are serious about cholesterol management you might want to add a few more antioxidants to your arsenal. Here are three that have been shown to be very effective in preventing LDL oxidation.

 

The first two we will look at together. Catechins and theaflavins have been shown to work well together to reduce LDL oxidation. Where do we find these little gems?

 

Catechins and theaflavins are found in green and black teas. There is a whole list of them. Which ones are better? A study done in China on the effectiveness of catechins and theaflavins to reduce LDL oxidation indicated that both green and black teas provided effective antioxidant powers. In fact, these flavonoids seem to work best together. In other words, consuming a complex of catechins and theaflavins from green and black teas provides the most comprehensive antioxidant influence.

 

There is, however, another champion antioxidant that has received abundant study in relation to LDL oxidation. That champion is COQ10.

 

CoQ10 is perhaps best known as a necessary coenzyme in the process of producing cellular energy. It is extremely important for the proper functioning of large organs like the heart.

 

But CoQ10 is also a very strong antioxidant. It has been demonstrated to be more effective in preventing LDL oxidation than vitamin-E. In fact, CoQ10 is known to regenerate vitamin-E that has been depleted in its antioxidant warfare. Which should you take? Both. CoQ10 and vitamin-E work best in tandem. That is normally how antioxidants function.

 

By all means keep your LDL low. But also consider efforts to keep your LDL healthy. LDL that has undergone oxidation is bad news for heart health. CoQ10, vitamin-E, theaflavins and catechins can all help in the antioxidant war to prevent coronary heart disease.

Lowering Cholesterol Naturally: It Is Still The Best Approach

When we were kids my brother used to say, "Do drugs." I think he was kidding.

The truth is using drugs has become an epidemic. I don't just mean illegal drugs. You and I both know that prescription drugs are widely abused in our culture. The first line of defense for many people is to reach for the medicine cabinet.

 

The television commercials don't help either. The pharmaceutical companies have taken their message to the airwaves. We are now encouraged to ask our doctor if Brand-X is right for us. I am standing on my soapbox a bit here. But my complaint is not against the many medicines that are available to help restore us to health. My complaint is against using drugs when there are better alternatives.

 

Lowering cholesterol naturally may still be your best option in the war against heart disease.

The third report of the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) agrees with me on this. Actually it would be better to say that I agree with ATP III. What does ATP III recommend?

 

Actually ATP III recommends the same approach you have probably heard many times before. The recommendation is to make changes to your lifestyle. At the very core of these changes we find the subject of diet.

 

Why diet?

Because what we eat - and don't eat - has a strong influence on how our bodies handle cholesterol. For example...

While we are on the subject of fats we should mention trans-fats. How much of our daily caloric intake should be composed of trans-fats? 0%!

 

Trans-fats are a different breed. They are actually not saturated fats at all. In fact they are polyunsaturated fats that have been pushed toward saturation by a process called hydrogenation. Structurally they are still unsaturated. However they act very differently in our bodies than do other naturally occurring fats.

 

Many researchers have implicated trans-fats in the heart disease epidemic of the 1990s. That is a loud message. It is a message that tells us to stay away.

 

How do you know if you have trans-fats in the foods you eat?

Read the labels. Unfortunately food labels do not list trans-fats unless to say the product contains none. Look instead for the phrase 'partially hydrogenated'. You might be surprised how many of the products in your panty contain partially hydrogenated oils.

 

Now for some good news about fats.

ATP III recommends that up to 30% of your caloric intake be in the form of polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats - in most cases - do not have the same negative influence on cholesterol as do saturated fats and trans-fats.

And just like those commercials that promise you more if you buy now... there is more to unsaturated fats than merely not having a negative influence on cholesterol.

 

Take omega-3 for example. Omega-3 fatty acids are among the essential fatty acids that can actually improve your cholesterol profile. Among other things, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to...

* raise HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol)
* reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol)
* lower triglycerides
* reduce blood platelet stickiness

You can get more omega-3 through certain vegetative sources like broccoli and flax seeds. But the more potent forms are found in cold-water fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and tuna.

 

If eating fish everyday is not an option for you try omega-3 supplements. There are some that do not produce a fishy aftertaste and contain no metal pollutants.

 

Reducing your intake of saturated fats and increasing unsaturated fat consumption is one way to lower cholesterol naturally. So before you ask your doctor if Brand-X is right for you, consider making changes to your lifestyle. A grilled tuna sandwich may not be as readily available as that burger that has been sitting under the heat-lamp for three hours, but it may help you reduce your risk for heart disease.
