Prostate Cancer : Men's Health Tips

Prostate Cancer: The Male Equivalent of Female Breast Cancer

Over 30,000 men will die this year from prostate cancer. Not only that, but it has been quoted that over 200,000 new prostate cancer cases are reported each year in men as well. While prostate cancer is fairly treatable if it is found in it's earliest stages, it still is a major concern for men, especially men over the age of 40 when you consider the fact that one in six men are diagnosed with this cancer. What can you do to prevent this disease, and what are the measures for ensuring the cancer goes into a permanent remission?

Cervical Cancer Fact

One such diet used in the prevention and reversal of cancer is the macrobiotic diet, which is a very restrictive diet based in sea vegetables and whole grains.

The Diet/Prostate Cancer Link

While there is much speculation about this, there have been studies to strongly suggest that diet has a profound impact on cancer prevention of all types, not just prostate cancer. Further, the regulation of one's blood sugar may play an even bigger role than we think in suppressing the growth of cancer cells, and slowing or completely stopping the growth of existing cancer cells.

The food groups of dairy and most fats is eliminated, and sugars are strictly forbidden. Microwaves are not used to cook foods, and minimal cooking of foods is advised to maintain their nutritional and antioxidant value as much as possible.

This diet actually originated in Japan, and has gained a lot of notoriety over here in the states for having particularly therapeutic value in the healing and prevention of cancer and other diseases. If you are thinking about going on a diet like this, that promotes healing and helps to prevent prostate cancer, I would encourage you to read about this diet online and see if it sounds like something you could do.

Other than that, common sense seems to prevail in diet guidelines for prostate cancer prevention. The usual guidelines include staying away from sugars, eating an abundance of leafy green veggies, the darker green is even better, and avoiding processed and prepared foods.

Another good guideline is to eat organic whenever possible. Organic foods are free of pesticides, chemicals, preservatives, and hormones that are common contaminants of most foods sold in grocery stores. Try to stick to unprocessed, raw foods whenever it is feasible to do so, and drink filtered or distilled water whenever possible.

Be Active, Stay Active: Health is a State of Mind

Maintaining an active lifestyle is beneficial for almost any type of cancer. Active people tend to stick to healthy diets, and tend to maintain a healthier outlook on life and health. Don't let anyone tell you there is not a huge mind/body connection, because there definitely is.

The evidence is pretty stunning to anyone when it is viewed as to how profoundly diet and lifestyle is related to the prevention and even reversal of many kinds of cancer, and prostate cancer is no different.

Surgery for Colorectal Cancer

Surgery is the Most Common form of treatment for all Stages of Colorectal Cancer

Surgery for colorectal cancer (colon and rectal cancer) is the removal of the tumor and cancerous tissue with surgery. This may include removal of a polyp, cancer on a polyp, the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes. The most procedure done most of the time requires removal of the primary cancer and the regional lymph nodes to ensure that all of the disease has been removed.

There are different types of surgical procedures that can be performed to remove the cancer.

Each type of surgery depends on the size of the tumor and if and how much it has spread. Often colon cancer will spread beyond the area of the primary tumor and for micrometastases that are undetectable at time of the surgery. The possible presence of micrometastases is the reason why chemotherapy is often given soon after the surgery is performed to ensure that none of these micrometastases are left.

The most common procedures for surgery for colon cancer are:

Local Excision with Colonoscopy Surgical Resection Laparoscopic surgery Surgery for recurrent or metastatic disease (liver or lung metastases) Local Excision with Colonoscopy: Local Excision is usually performed if the cancer is detected in a early stage. Local excision is performed without the need to cut through the abdominal wall but instead a tube is placed through the patients rectum and into the colon. Once the tube is at the location of the cancer it will be removed. If the cancer is located on a polyp on the wall of the colon this procedure then becomes a polypectomy.

After the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue of the colon is resected the two remaing healthy parts of the colon are sewed back together. This rejoining of the colon is called anastomosis. Along with removing all of the cancer and some of the surrounding healthy tissue the surgeon might also find it necessary to remove some the the surrounding lymph nodes.

Laparoscopic surgery: Laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery (when natural body openings are not used), bandaid surgery, or minimally invasive surgery (MIS), is a surgical technique. Small cameras are placed in the 1/2 inch long hole made in the skin of the abdomen to see if there are any cancerous growths in the colon. The images from the camera can be seen on monitors in the operating room. Also small incisions are made for the tiny instruments that will be used to remove the disease if necessary and then sew back the parts of the colon that the cancer was removed from.

Laparoscopic surgery does not produce as much pain as the conventional types of surgery and the hospital stay will noy be as long.

Early Symptoms Prostate Cancer: The Debate on Whether Diagnostic Testing Is Advisable at This Stage

Early symptoms prostate cancer is very rare. If the condition is at its earliest stage, chances are, there wouldn't be any sign at all. In majority of early stage cases, cancer in the prostate is often diagnosed accidentally either by prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test or a digital rectal examination (DRE) which could be part of a routine checkup. Because of the increased attention given to the disease, most men, especially those who are aged 45 and above, often go for routine tests to make sure that their prostate glands are in good health.

This type of procedure can be performed when there is no evidence that the cance has spread to the lymph nodes or to the blood system. The local excision is the least invasive of the surgical procedures available for colon cancer treatment. Surgical Resection : If the cancer has possibly spread to the lymph nodes or locally a complete curative surgical resection can be performed to ensure that all of the cancer and the possible spread is removed. The term used for the removal of the primary tumor and some of the surrounding tissue is called a partial colectomy.

The use of tests to evaluate early symptoms prostate cancer became more common during the 1990s. Statistics have shown that death rates due to cancer of the prostate have declined following the increased use of these diagnostic methods. Despite their apparent usefulness, the scientific community has been divided on whether it is advisable for men to undergo such tests even with the absence of symptoms.

PSA and DRE methods have potential problems attached to them. For one, these screening techniques are not 100 percent accurate. A person's PSA level can become irregular due to reasons other than cancer. Medications and other health factors might cause this, which in turn could result to faulty evaluation. The DRE, primarily used to detect irregularities in the shape, texture and size of the prostate, might also be misinterpreted since the irregularities might be caused by other prostate conditions.

Several medical societies have advised against the use of routine testing during the early stages since inconclusive results might lead to anxiety or confusion. If the results are normal, a patient might get a false sense of security that could lead to neglect or eliminate caution all together. Furthermore, a man who gets a positive result from a PSA or DRE test might opt to get a biopsy despite the minor risks and discomfort associated with the process.

Some experts are recommending that routine examinations be offered to patients only if they are aged 50 and above. Except for men who belong to high risk groups, routine prostate cancer testing is not recommended to men who are below the age of 50. For high risk individuals, like those who have first degree relatives with prostate cancer, testing should be done as early as at age 45. Yearly monitoring is also recommended to these individuals since their chances of having the condition are higher than the ordinary man.

Before deciding on whether to get a PSA or a DRE test to confirm early symptoms prostate cancer, factors such as age and health should be considered. If a man is young and is genetically predisposed, then early tests are recommended since he would have a better chance of treating the disease if it is caught early. If a patient is old and in poor health, then he needs to discuss his options first with his physician. There might not be any need for tests since prostate cancer is a slow developing condition. It might not become a problem and the person might even die of other causes before it can even impact his life. provides you with info on early symptoms prostate cancer, its treatments and symptoms and how to overcome or reduce the risk of getting it.

Colon Cancer Screening

Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening: The most important part of prevention of colon cancer is screening. Regular screening for colon and rectal cancer can in alot of cases prevent colorectal cancer. This is true because polpys (growths) which are often precursors to cancer of the colon, can be detected and removed before they become malignant (cancerous). Another reason for screening is cancerous that are found earlier are easier to treat. This is not only true for colon and rectal cancer but for all cancers. Colorectal cancer in the earliest stages is highly curable.

When should Screening for Colon Cancer begin? People that are not in a high risk group for colon cancer should begin to get screened at age 50. This should be confirmed with your physician. If the patient has a family history or has some of the other risk factors such as polyps should speak with their physician to determine when would be the best time to start screening for colon and rectal cancer. Usually the physician will want to begin screening at an earlier age and with more frequency that a person without these risk factors present.'

Although we tend to think of cancer whenever the prostate is mentioned, there are in fact numerous other problems that can affect the prostate gland, many of which can be quite easily treated. Prostate cancer is rarely seen in men under the age of 40 and, although cases are seen between the ages of 40 and 65, the vast majority of prostate cancer cases arise in men over the age of 65. In many cases however the progress of the disease is slow and early stage prostate cancer often carries few if any noticeable symptoms. For this reason many men can suffer from prostate cancer for years before it is diagnosed and the average age at which diagnosis is made in the United States is currently 70.

Screening Test for Colorectal Cancer We have tests that can detect colon cancer at an early stage and that are also helpful in detecting polpys which often become cancerous. The prevention and detection of polyps is importnat to the prevention of colon cancer. Fecal Occult Blood Test : the fecal occult blood test or FOBT is used to find occult (hidden) blood in the stool (feces). Blood in the stool is caused by blood vessels on the surface of polyps, adenomas and cancers which are very fragile and easily damaged when passing feces. When the blood vessels on these structures break open they releaase blood onto the feces. The blood on the feces will not always cause the stool to turn red as you might expect. The FOBT can be performed to find this undecteable blood on the stool. Special chemicals are placed on the stool samples and through a chemical reaction the blood is detected.

Although this test can detect blood in the stool it cannot tell if the blood came from the colon or if it is from another part of the digestive tract such as the stomach. The only sure way of knowing after blood is detected as to where it is coming from is to have a colonoscopy performed to see if the blood is actually coming from the colon through an actual cancer, polyp or possible an ulcer of even hemorrhoids.

Note that sometimes the Fecal Occult Blood Test can be affected by some food or drugs and it is suggested that one refrain from the following before taking the test:

NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen or aspirin for at least 7 days prior to the test red meat for at least 3 days prior to testing vitamin C from juices, fruit or supplements over 250 mg daily for at least 3 days before testing raw vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, horseradish, parsnips, radishes, turnips and melons for 3 days prior to the test

Prostate Cancer - Are Men Their Own Worst Enemy?

The commonest form of cancer in the United States today is skin cancer but, to many people's surprise, prostate cancer is the second most frequently seen type of cancer and results in some 30,000 deaths each year. So just what is prostate cancer? The human body starts its life as a single cell which divides repeatedly to form new cells. As cell division continues so the newly created cells, acting as the building blocks of the human body, form themselves into walls of tissue creating the various parts that we recognize as the human body. This is not however the end of the process as, throughout our lives, our bodies change constantly with old cells wearing out and dying and other newer cells continuing the process of division to replace them.

Occasionally however this process of division does not follow the pattern that it should and a cell divides incorrectly, forming two cells which do not carry the correct information to function normally. At the same time this frequently sets off a chain reaction so that these cells in turn begin to divide, forming further faulty cells. This, in simple terms, is the basis of all cancers and, where faulty cell division takes place in the prostate gland, then the result is prostate cancer. The prostate gland, which is about the size of a walnut, sits between the bladder and the rectum and partially surrounds the urethra (the tube which carries urine from the bladder) and its main function is to produce and store a clear fluid which makes up about thirty percent of male semen.

If caught in its early stages prostate cancer can be successfully treated either by surgery or radiation therapy (radiotherapy) and, while such treatment can often leave its mark in terms of ongoing problems with urination or a degradation or loss of sexual function, the cancer will often not return. Problems arise however if prostate cancer is more advanced at the time of diagnosis and has already spread into neighboring tissue and bone, or has been carried to other parts of the body, usually through the lymphatic system. Here a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and possibly hormone therapy can certainly help in treating the problem but the cancer will often reappear.

Perhaps the biggest problem lies in the fact that, in terms of their general health and sexual health in particular, men have traditionally suffered in silence and will only venture into the doctor's surgery when they are at death's door. This fortunately is starting to change in our modern society, even if only slowly, and as an increasing number of men turn to their doctor when they first suspect that something might be wrong, rather than waiting until they know something is wrong, then perhaps the early diagnosis of prostate cancer will result in fewer deaths each year from this treatable disease.
