Finding out you or someone that you love has been diagnosed with cancer is to say the very least a devastating blow. It will become not only a hard road emotionally, physically but also financially. This is why you need to find as much cancer information as you can. This may be in the form of advice and support from doctors, counselors, specific cancer organizations, family and friends including other cancer sufferers as well. Talking to people who have been in the same situation as yourself can be an enormous support and also a wonderful source of cancer information can be shared.
Apart from speaking to people in person there are other ways to gain more info about this situation. There are many books that you can read both for the patient and or families and friends. I suppose the easiest way to find out more is on the internet. In the U.S alone there are many websites that are full of relevant cancer information. To start with you have the American Cancer Society. Obviously there are many different cancers so there will be many different informative sources on all of them and you will no doubt be looking for a particular type for your own circumstances. But in the end every one who is suffering from any one of these cancers will still need the same help and support regarding coping stategies and so on.
Another good reason to find as much cancer information as possible is to find out other forms of treatments that may be able to help you either on their own or as a combination along side of the usual forms. Usually at this time in someone's life things become very confusing with all the medical jargon as well as all the emotional turmoil and the often draining effects of medication and treatments to be able to think properly. This is when you should be gathering up as much info as you can and just taking your time reading through it so you can get a better picture of what is going on and how to make the best of it.
If you are someone who has a loved one that has been diagnosed with this type of illness then you should be finding out as much as you can to be able to do the right things emotionally to help support this person. You also can read up on their particular condition so you can help answer any questions when they arise. Support from family and friends is a very important part of recovery for someone suffering from cancer.

Selenium as powerful anti-cancer medicine
Selenium as powerful anti-cancer medicine From the office of Dr. Laurence Magne, author of www.cancer-free-for-life.com One of the most effective naturally occurring weapons against cancer is the mineral selenium, shown in multiple studies to be an effective tool against various types of cancer, including breast, esophageal, stomach, prostate, liver and bladder cancers. Not many people get the recommended dose of 200 micrograms a day. Research shows selenium, especially when used in conjunction with vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene, works to block chemical reactions that create free radicals in the body, which can damage DNA and cause degenerative change in cells, leading to cancer. Selenium also helps stop damaged DNA molecules from reproducing.
Their death appears to occur before they replicate, thus helping stop cancer before it gets started.
In other words, selenium acts to prevent tumors from developing. It contributes towards the death of cancerous and pre-cancer cells. In the study of 1,300 older people, the occurrence of cancer among those who took 200 micrograms of selenium daily for about seven years was reduced by 42 percent compared to those given a placebo. Cancer deaths for those taking the selenium were cut almost in half. While the study concluded the mineral helped protect against all types of cancer, it had particularly powerful impacts on prostate, colorectal and lung cancers.
To learn more about how you can stop cancer in your life, read Cancer Free For Life. The majority of the population is not getting enough of the essential mineral. There are some good dietary sources of selenium: Mushrooms, egg yolks, seafood, poultry and kidney, liver and muscle meats contain the mineral. Vegetables -- garlic, onions, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes and others -- as well as whole grains and seeds can also be good sources of selenium.
However, because the amount of selenium in vegetables and grains depends on the selenium content in the soil in which they are grown, it can be hard for average consumers to know how much of the mineral they are actually getting in their diets. Processing wheat into white flour strips it of a great deal of its selenium. One way to get more selenium in your diet might be to eat more organically grown foods, which some studies have shown to contain more selenium as well as higher levels of beta carotene and vitamin E. These two work together with selenium in cancer prevention. Eating just one shelled Brazil nut -- grown in the selenium-rich soil of central Brazil -- provides 120 micrograms of the mineral, getting you that much closer to the daily target of 200 micrograms.
Simply adding more selenium-rich foods, such as organically grown vegetables and fruits to your diet, along with supplements, can help reduce your risk of cancer. And another positive side effect of selenium is that it can actually improve your mood. People who don't eat enough selenium-rich foods tend to be grumpier than people with a high dietary intake, according to recent research. Isn't it cliche, let us just take one day at a time. Well, that’s what I found out to be true, that’s all anyone has, just today. My brother was diagnosed with a rare cancer this summer. He is the epic of health. He’s big, healthy, young, never smoked, ate the right foods, lives on a farm with a large, organic vegetable garden.
What went wrong? So you see, it can strike at any time, this deadly disease, you can be young, old, any size or shape. When it strikes, it’s devastating to your immediate family. We all kind of go through pseudo symptoms. Questioning, why us, getting angry, depressed, this happens to the other guy, we were living life the way we were suppose to.
How are we going to live now?
Here are some tips on living with cancer:
-Get many opinions, from many different doctors
-Don’t wait - get blood tests, cat scans, biopsies as soon as possible
-know doctors deal with statistics and past cases, they can be insensitive
- If you are given a time table, (i.e.) 6 mo., 1 year, 2 or 3 years, know that it may be wrong and often is. Many have lived a lot longer and still are living.
-people are different in emotional structure, their will to live, the battle to fight for more time. Each person is chemically different based on heredity
-Don’t let the fear of the disease tear your family apart.
- Stay together, love each other and try not to play the if only game. (i.e.) If only they could have diagnosed it earlier, or, I should of eaten more fruits and vegetables.
-Be supportive to your loved one. Try not to feel sorry for yourself or lose it.
You don’t know when your life is going to take a turn. So what I have learned is, live your life today. Don’t wait until you have that nest egg, or until you get that promotion, or until you can do this, or accomplish that. My brother didn’t give himself cancer. We are all terminal. Just tell me one person who has lived pass one hundred and fifty. Through experience, we found out that this disease has opened our eyes to live for today. Today is all we have. It has brought us closer together. We tell each other, I love you every time we see each other. We live in a real world, but it’s hope of seeing each other today, that makes living with cancer, bearable.
Although surgery is the most effective (and hence, the most widely used) breast cancer treatment method, there are several other ways of dealing with the disease, some are more powerful than the others. These include radiation therapy, chemotherapy or hormonal therapy, each of them with their own assets and downsides. Most of them however are used in combination with surgery for best effects, either prior to it, in order to reduce the size of the tumor or after the operation, in order to remove any remaining cancerous cells. For a better understanding of these alternative treatment methods for breast cancer, we'll take a closer look at each, explaining how they work and in what cases they might prove useful.
Radiation Therapy Radiation therapy uses powerful gamma rays (x-rays) which target the specific area that needs to be treated with high precision. Usually, radiation therapy is performed after surgery, to destroy any cancer cells that have not been removed or the ones that formed up where the tumor was removed. Although it can't be used as, a treatment on its own, radiation therapy is one of the most accepted post-surgery methods of breast conserving therapy (BCT) and has a high chance of stopping the cancer from recurring.
As with all treatments involving x-rays, there are some downsides to radiation therapy. First, in order to wipe out the cancerous cells that might have formed (or remained) in the area where the tumor was removed from, the x-rays will eventually damage some of the healthy tissue too. Although the process is highly precise, the rays cannot make a difference between cancerous and normal cells, so they "burn" them together.
Chemotherapy Chemotherapy involves the administration of drugs that kill the cancer cells or stop them from growing. Most chemotherapy medications are given through an intravenous line, although some are administered in pill form. Chemotherapy is a harsh regime, which often makes people feel more ill than the illness they are suffering from; however, it has been proved very effective.
Chemotherapy is a great treatment method to use both prior and after surgery. With the help of this method, you can virtually contract the cancerous tumor before the actual surgery, making it easier and less complex to remove. In addition, chemotherapy is used in the same sense as radiation therapy after the surgical intervention, to stop the diseased cells to recur. Chemotherapy is administered usually in cycles where each cycle consists of a period of intensive treatment that lasts for a few days or weeks followed by a week of recovery. Most patients with breast cancer have two to four cycles of chemotherapy to start with before tests are performed to see what effects it has had on the cancer.
Chemotherapy is different to radiation as it can treat the whole body with the potential of finding other tumor cells that have migrated from the breast and surrounding area. Many people are familiar with chemotherapy's side effects although the side effects do depend upon drugs to treat the patient. The most common side effects are loss of hair, loss of appetite, fatigue, vomiting and low blood cell count making the patient more susceptible to infections, feeling sick or tired. Many notice that they bleed more than usual, especially from gums, sores and small scrapes etc.
There are three different chemotherapy strategies are used in breast cancer:
Adjuvant chemotherapy - this is given to patients who have undergone curative treatment for breast cancer such as radiation or surgery. In order to decrease the possibility of the breast cancer recurrence, this treatment is given. Pre-surgical chemotherapy - this is given to shrink a large tumor and/or to kill any stray cancerous cells. This will also increase the chance that the surgery will kill the cancer completely. Regular chemotherapy - this is given routinely to people who have breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast or the surrounding local area.
Hormonal therapy may also be given, as many breast cancers such as those that have ample estrogens or progesterone receptors are sensitive to changes in hormones. Tamoxifen Breast Cancer Treatment Those women who are genetically at high risk of developing breast cancer may benefit from tamoxifen as it has previously been seen to decrease the incidence of the disease occurring. Raloxifene, which is used to treat osteoporosis, is now being studied for treating breast cancer.
In some breast cancer cases, a woman's natural hormones are suppressed with drugs whereas other patients find benefits by adding hormones. Tamoxifen for instance is currently the most commonly prescribed effective hormone treatment. It can be used for treating breast cancer and in the prevention of breast cancer. Tamoxifen has few side effects and can considerably improve the life span of those women who have advanced cases of breast cancer. Fulvestrant Breast Cancer Treatment A further treatment, Fulvestrant has recently been approved in the USA. It is planned to be used for treating hormone receptor positive metastastic breast cancer in women who have been through the menopause. It is given following antiestrogen therapy.
Monoclonal Breast Cancer Treatment Another treatment known as monoclonal is antibodies that are antagonistic against the proteins, which are in or around cancer cells. They recognise an invader such as a cancer cell and attack it. This antibody therapy is currently being investigated holds out a lot of hope for breast cancer sufferers. Excessive alcohol intake and obesity following menopause can increase the risk of developing breast cancer although this increase is slight. Those physically active women have a lower risk.
Preventative or Prophylactic Mastectomies More and more women who are at a high risk of developing breast cancer are having preventative or prophylactic mastectomies to avoid them developing breast cancer. The main risk factors for women to develop breast are age, sex and genetics. Women can do nothing about some risks so preventing death caused due to breast cancer is recommended with regular screening. Women should undertake regular screening including self-examination, mammography and clinical breast examinations. I hope that reading the above information was both enjoyable and educational for you. That's how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest news.

Studies on flax seed and cholesterol treatment to lower cholesterol, show that it reduces cholesterol by about 6 percent. In one study by Bahram Arjmandi, Ph.D., of Oklahoma State University, supplements of ground flax seed and cholesterol lowering effects, showed a reduction in cholesterol and reduce a heart disease-promoting protein in postmenopausal women. Does Flaxseed reduce Cancer Risk? Yes, Flaxseed reduces cancer risk. The lignans in flaxseed appear to play a role in protecting against breast, colon, prostate, and perhaps skin cancer. In one study(1), prostate cancer patients who added about 3 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily to their diet, had more slowly-dividing tumor cells and a greater rate of tumor cell death than men who did not follow such a diet, after about 5 weeks.
There are forums and chat rooms that will give you the opportunity to speak to some of these people. It can be very positive to speak to someone who has gone through what you are and now have fully recovered. Just being able to talk about medications and treatments with someone who really understands can be an amazing therapeutic comfort. You must remember that having this illness does not only affect your physical side but also your mental side and this needs to be looked after as well.
In the double-blind crossover study, 38 women with extremely high cholesterol levels were given bread and muffins containing 38 g of either sunflower or flaxseed four daily. After six weeks, subjects were taken off the supplemented food for two weeks and then switched to food made with the other flour for six weeks. Flaxseed Lowers Cholesterol too! Flaxseed lowered total cholesterol by 6.9 percent and LDL (bad) cholesterol by 14.7 percent. However, only ground flaxseed has such effects on cholesterol; whole flaxseed is not digestible.
This shows that flax seed and cholesterol lowering effect of flax seed is real. However, probably more studies are needed to have a conclusive proof of flax seed treatment to reduce cholesterol. By lowering LDL cholesterol, a person is able to significantly reduce risk of heart disease and accompanying health complications. Current dietary advice for those at risk from coronary artery disease focus on the restriction of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol intake, combined with exercise and ideal body weight. Also emphasized is the need to increase intake of alpha-linolenic acid - the major component of the omega-3 fatty acids found in flax seed. (Research entitled "Studies Concerning Lignans, Fiber and Anti-oxidants Found in Flax)
High cholesterol Flaxseed, like other good sources of soluble fiber, has been reported to lower cholesterol. A recent trial found that partially defatted flaxseed containing 20 grams of fiber per day significantly lowered LDL cholesterol, suggesting that at least one of the cholesterol-lowering components in flaxseed is likely to be the fiber in this product (as opposed to the oil removed from it). In a preliminary trial, young women who had normal cholesterol levels took 50g (approximately 1-3/4 oz.) of raw flaxseed per day for a month, either as flour or baked into bread, which resulted in a 9% decrease in total cholesterol and an 18% decrease in LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
