Information on Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare cancer that happens in a very small percentage of women. It is an aggressive type of locally advanced cancer. In general, women with inflammatory breast cancer are diagnosed at a younger age. In extremely rare circumstances, this form of breast cancer is diagnosed in men. Inflammatory breast cancer usually develops as a sheet rather than a lump.

Cancer Society

It is very easy to mix up the symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer with those of a breast infection.

Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include:

Breast becomes red, purple, pink or bruised; Breast becomes firm and enlarged; A warm feeling in the breast; Itching of the breast; Pain; Skin texture similar to an orange peel; Enlarged lymph nodes under the arm; Flattening of the nipple; Swollen skin on the nipple; Change in color of the skin around the nipple.

If you become aware of any of the signs of inflammatory breast cancer, see your doctor immediately. This form of cancer is not caused by an inflammation or infection. Inflammatory breast cancer happens when cancer cells clog the lymphatic vessels in the skin overlying the breast. In the past, inflammatory breast cancer was treated by surgery and was associated with a 100% mortality rate. Fortunately, major progress has been made in recent years using a combination of treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

These treatments have greatly improved the prognosis for a woman with inflammatory breast cancer. Recent studies have shown as much as a 50% survival rate after 5 years and a 35% survival rate after 10 years.

Alex Fir shares a wealth of information on his website Breast Cancer Facts. To see how inflammatory breast cancer looks like visit this page inflammatory breast cancer pictures.

Can Flax Seed Lower Cancer Risks?

What is ALA in Flax Seed?
ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid. To a limited extent, the body turns ALA into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil--which in turn converts to beneficial prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances made in many parts of the body rather than coming from one organ, as most hormones do.

Getting all the nutrients the easy way
The hard part about getting all of your good fat from nuts or fish is that nuts contain extra calories from carbs and protein, and it's not very convenient to prepare and eat a fish like salmon everyday. Flax seed oil on the other hand is as quick and simple as can be, and contains, for the most part, just fat. So... it has less calories than nuts. Not to mention that they are easier to bring around too!

Flax Seed Oil and Cancer
Flaxseed oil contains only the alpha-linolenic acid component of flaxseed, and not the fiber or lignan components. Therefore, flaxseed oil may share the purported lipid-lowering properties of flaxseed, but not the proposed laxative or anti-cancer abilities. Many researches has confirmed that flax seed oil does in fact reduce the risk of cancer. In many cases, cancer patients on a flax seed diet has shown that cancer cells were substantially less than the control group! Remember, always take ground flax seed as it can be easily adsorbed by your body.

Lignan Rich Flax Seed
Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flax seed is rich in lignan. Lignan is a type of phytoestrogen and also provides fiber. Researches reveal that lignan in flax seed shows a lot of promise in fighting disease -- including a possible role in cancer prevention especially breast cancer. It is thought that lignan metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors, hence inhibiting the onset of estrogen-stimulated breast cancer.

How to Use Flax Seed
If using the flax seeds, make sure the seeds are milled, ground up. Otherwise, you won't be able to absorb them. You can add the ground up seeds to cereal, salads, protein shakes, rice, or just eat them plain. You can add the oil to other liquid drinks, or just drink it straight. A good plan is using 1-2 TBSP of the ground flax seed and 1/2 TBSP Oil in the morning and before bed. Also use 1 TBSP of oil with 1 other meal during the day. You want to get 1-3 TBSPs a day.

With so much health benefits associated with Flax Seed, we do urge you to find out more about flax seeds. Do visit our site at for more flax seed benefits.

Colon Cancer Tests - How to detect early the fatal Colon Cancer?

People hear the "C" word and immediately know it's serious. But the double C, colon cancer, is even more frightening. According to the American Cancer Society, 50% of colon cancer related deaths could be prevented if all people over the age of 50 were tested for the disease. Plus, colon cancer starts as a non-cancerous growth. If this is caught and removed, you will prevent cancer from ever forming! This is why having a colon cancer test is so important. There are many different types of colon cancer tests. For instance, a colon cancer blood test detects the presence of blood that is hidden in the feces. Blood in the feces can be an indicator of polyps--precancerous growths--in the rectum.

The Tiny Flax Seed
It may be tiny, but it's mighty: The flax seed carries one of the biggest nutrient payloads on the planet. And while it's not technically a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, while the amount of fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids in flax leaves grains in the dust. All the fibers within the flax seed has a laxative effect and does a really good job in cleaning out your insides.

Another form of colon cancer test detects the level of a protein molecule associated with certain cancers in the blood, tissue or stool sample. This is called a CEA colon cancer test or a carcinoembryonic antigen colon cancer test. High levels of CEA indicate the presence of cancer in the body, most often in the gastrointestinal tract, but can also indicate other things such as infection, that fact that one is a smoker, and benign tumors.

One of the most talked about procedures is the colonoscopy. A colonoscopy involves the insertion of a long, thin tube into the rectum and up into the colon. This tube has a camera on the end, which then feeds images to a monitor. The doctor can then examine the colorectal tract closely and inspect for cancer or abnormal growths. If anything abnormal is found, either it is removed on the spot or a biopsy is taken.

The preventative miracle that is a colon cancer test needs to be more widely recognized. Thousands of people would go on to live to ripe old age if they were to have a colon cancer test done. Talk to you doctor about when the time is right to have a colon cancer test.

Important Information That Every Man Should Know About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a disease that only affects men, as the prostate gland is only found in men. It's located below the bladder, just in front of the rectum, and is about the size of a walnut. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder, and it passes through the prostate gland. The gland is also crucial in a man's reproductive ability, because it contains cells the supply seminal fluid. This is the fluid that nourishes and protects the sperm. If the prostate gland fails to provide seminal fluids, then the fertility of male sperm cells is compromised.

As a boy grows into a man, the prostate grows as well. The amount of growth is dependent on the male hormones that feed the prostate. If the level of male hormones is low, then the prostate won't be able to grow to its full size. It's also possible, mostly in older men, for the section of the prostate that surrounds the urethra to continue to grow, and this causes a condition known as BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Because of the pressure on the urethra from the enlarged prostate, BPH causes problems with urination. It can be quite an uncomfortable condition, but it doesn't post any serious health threat to the sufferer.

Prostate cancer, on the other hand, can be fatal if left untreated or discovered too late. The prostate gland contains a variety of cell types, however the gland cells are where almost all prostate cancers originate. This is a slow growing cancer, and is known as prostate adenocarcinoma. It's not unusual for older men to have had this type of cancer for years, and not even know. It's not unknown for an older man to die and have an autopsy done, only to discover he had prostate cancer. It's possible for prostate cancer to be present for an extended period, and yet the sufferer may not display any of the common symptoms such as problems with urinating.

A great deal of research has been done into the causes of prostate cancer, but nobody really knows exactly how or why prostate cancer starts. Some doctors believe that tiny, often undetectable changes in the shape and size of the prostate glands are the beginning of prostate cancer. Where this type of change is detected in the prostate gland, it's referred to as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, or PIN. There are two levels of PIN - low grade (close to normal) or high grade. Any high-grade level of PIN is regarded as abnormal. If a biopsy shows the presence of high grade PIN, it's necessary to conduct further tests, as this could mean that there are cancer cells present in your prostate. Early detection is just as critical in prostate cancer as it is with most types of cancer, so it's important that further tests are conducted immediately.

Most of the time prostate cancer grows very slowly, but that's not always the case. Prostate cancer has been known to spread very quickly. There is still no way of knowing which types of cancer cells are likely to grow quickly and which slowly, even with all our modern technology. Deciding what makes some cancer cells grow faster than others is a question that still remains unanswered. It's also the case that most cancer cases are unique because the individual with the cancer is unique, and so care and management can vary enormously between patients.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms: A Guide for Every Man

Prostate cancer symptoms might or might not manifest in a man suffering from this condition. Being a slow developing type of cancer, some men who have the disease might not even know that they have it. Since cancer of the prostate is more common in older men, there are those who die of other causes or diseases without even being diagnosed with prostate cancer until their bodies are examined in the autopsy table. Particularly in the early stages, symptoms are almost non-existent in patients with this disease.

For men who did experience prostate cancer symptoms, the most common are frequent urination, increased tendency to urinate at night, difficulty in maintaining a steady stream of urine, pain during urination and blood in the urine. Cancer of the prostate can also cause sexual function problems such as difficulty in achieving erection and painful ejaculation. If the condition is in the advanced stage or has metastasized in other parts of the body like the bone and the lymph nodes, additional symptoms will be most likely to occur. These can include bone pain, particularly in the spine, pelvis and ribs. If the cancer has spread to the spine, it can compress the spinal cord which can result to weakness in the legs and even urinary and fecal incontinence.

The symptoms of prostate cancer are very similar to those of other prostate disorders such as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and prostatitis. To determine the reason behind the symptoms, a thorough examination is necessary. If the cancer is detected at its earliest stage, the patient will have a better chance of treating and maintaining the condition. Several methods of detecting cancer in the prostate have been developed during the last few years and two of the most common are the prostatic specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal exam (DRE).

PSA is a protein that is produced in the prostate gland and released in very small amounts into the bloodstream. If a patient has a prostate condition, more PSA is released into the blood until it reaches a level where it can be easily detected. PSA levels under 4 ng/mL are usually considered as normal, while levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL are considered intermediate. However, in some cases, men with prostate cancer still record a low level of PSA. In cases like these, a DRE is often conducted to supplement the results of the PSA test.

DRE is a process wherein the physician inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to examine the size, shape and texture of the prostate and determine any irregularity. It is also often used by urologists to distinguish between cancer and non-cancerous conditions such as BPH and prostatitis. Although DRE and PSA test have been widely used as screening techniques, doctors have cautioned that these diagnostic measures are not 100 percent accurate. Other factors might cause the elevated level of PSA in a man's blood or cause irregularities in the prostate. With this in mind, patients are advised not to rush into these tests but have a long, detailed discussion with their physicians first.

Getting screened for cancer is only advisable if any of the common prostate cancer symptoms are experienced by the patient. It is also important to remember that the symptoms might be caused by other conditions and not by cancer at all. provides you with info on prostate cancer symptoms, its treatments and symptoms and how to overcome or reduce the risk of getting it.

Skin Cancer Awareness

Skin Cancer is one of the most common cancers. Approximately one in six people will develop skin cancer. Medical experts unanimously agree that overexposure to sunlight is the main culprit. Other factors include sunburn with blistering especially during childhood, skin creams that contain tar if used over a prolonged period, repeated X-rays, exposure to coal and arsenic, radiation, chemotherapy and family history. Freckles with fair skin that doesn't tan very easily can also put one at risk.

Most skin cancers grow slowly. It is imperative you inspect your body on a regular basis for anything unusual. Stand in front of a full length mirror and with a hand held mirror check out every inch of your skin. Have someone check the top of your head as well. You should know your body in detail, so that when something different rears its ugly head, you notice it immediately!

Watch for any unusual spots. Look for lesions, moles or spots that are asymmetrical in shape. Observe for any colored spot that grows bigger or develops an uneven color or irregular, ragged edge. Look for any nodules or patches that are red and scaly, as this can be a squamous cell carcinoma which can metastasize (spread). Other symptoms to look for are changes in the surface of a mole. If you notice the mole is raised above the skin and has a rough surface, is scaly, oozing, bleeding or there is development of bumps on any mole, seek medical attention. In other words anything that develops that wasn't on your body before should be investigated by your physician.

Also showing sensitivity to anticancer drugs are the cells that line the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, which undergo cell division regularly and which the body manufactures and replaces every few days. Some anticancer drugs interrupt this production of cells, causing small ulcers. Fortunately, this is quite unusual in breast cancer chemotherapy, but can still occur. The mouth and the rectal areas are the most susceptible.

Skin cancer has a high cure rate if caught early. Excision of the lesion is the most common treatment. Self examination is the key to early detection with a regular visit to your doctor for check ups. The best methods to avoid skin cancer are to avoid the sun, especially during the hottest part of the day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Wear a sunscreen if you are out doors with an SPF of at least 15 or more, applied thirty minutes before going into the sun. Put the sunscreen everywhere the suns rays will hit you. Don't forget your ears and men don't forget any bald areas on top of your head. If you have to be out in the sun, use a wide brimmed hat or cap. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Choose sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts as well. Wear long sleeve shirts and pants if it is not sweltering hot, to better protect your body. Don't use tanning salons as they can damage your skin just like the sun.

Of course there is the controversy that you need some sun in order NOT to be vitamin B deficient. Ask your doctor to prescribe a good vitamin B supplement. Your doctor can advise the proper dose to take. I know it is hard at times to completely avoid the sun. A few minutes of sun occasionally with a good sun screen, should not be too harmful, as long as you watch the time of day and check your body on a regular basis. Also too much sun can contribute to wrinkles. Avoidance is best, but not always possible. Hence, just be very careful and check, check, check your body regularly (monthly if possible). Go to your doctor immediately when you notice any irregularities. Keep healthy!

Adverse Effects of Breast Cancer Chemotherapy

Undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer patients will definitely increase overall survival; the occurrence of adverse events is inevitable. Of all the side effects of chemotherapy, bone marrow toxicity. The bone marrow primarily functions as the production site of white and red blood cells. Most women treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer will experience a decline in their white blood cell count, most often seven to fourteen days after treatment. This drop of cell count is known as leucopenia. Thus, while on chemotherapy, the breast cancer patient should be alert for any infection, which is the first sign of bone marrow suppression. The most immediate symptom of an infection will be a fever.

As a cancer patient, it is important that you alert your physician at the first signs of infection and to receive antibiotic therapy. There are some clinical protocols that routinely put women on antibiotics the second week after each chemotherapy session as a prophylactic measure against infection. Gene technology is now trying to get into the picture of safer chemotherapy. There are genetically engineered bone marrow stimulants available for women who develop severe depression of their white or red blood cell counts. Drugs like Neuprogen and Epogen are some of these agents. Fortunately, the toxicity to the bone marrow that occurs after chemotherapy is temporary and reversible. If an infection occurs, it is potentially very serious and must be addressed immediately to avoid fatal complications.

The most common gastrointestinal symptom of cancer chemotherapy is nausea and vomiting, most often during the week immediately following treatment. This is primarily due to a massive mediator release of substances called histamines, which are stored in the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract. New drugs can now prevent the release of histamines for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Since the discover and appropriate use of supportive medications, the nausea and vomiting accompanying chemotherapy is much less of a problem than it used to be. The incidence of these adverse events varies depending on the drugs used and the dose intensity with which they are used.

For most women, hair loss (alopecia) is a very distressing side effect of a few anticancer agents. Some of the agents such as doxorubicin, paclitaxel, docetaxel can cause uniform temporary alopecia, especially from the scalp. Other drugs only cause minimal hair thinning. Many of the breast cancer chemotherapy regimens have doxorubicin and some of the newer ones have paclitaxel or docetaxel, so temporary hair loss should be anticipated after undergoing chemotherapy.

Because side effects can be debilitating, many women want to know if they can continue to work while on chemotherapy. The answer varies depending on the regimen used and the stress and demands of the particular job. Whether the patient decides to continue working or not, it is important that during the several months of chemotherapy, she should plan to take it easy - reduce as much stress as she can. She should engage herself with loved ones, friends and extend support system especially during the periods when she is down and not feeling well.
