Breast Cancer - What Everyone Should Know

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed of all the cancers affecting women in America today. It strikes women of all ages and races but is particularly prevalent in women over forty. Researchers are constantly seeking new methods for the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of this virulent cancer. The success of this research has played a big part in the early detection and successful treatment of more cases of breast cancer in recent years.

Cancer Research

You should examine your breasts at least once a month, but the more frequently you do so, the earlier you will detect any lumps.

New treatments are constantly being sought to effectively seek out any potentially cancerous cells in a woman's body. This reduces the number of cases of breast cancer significantly. Thanks to this continued research, many more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before. The recovery rate has steadily been increasing. Early detection and treatment is the key to this success.

Information regarding breast cancer has become more widely available. It is no longer the silent killer that it once was. Women are being educated as to their risks of developing the cancer and methods of checking their breasts for signs of the disease. A woman has an increased probability of developing breast cancer if she falls into certain categories. The first is that she has passed the age of 40, especially if she had children after that age. Obesity and excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to the chances of a woman developing the disease being greater than average.

Initially, breast cancer is only detectable by a mammogram. The disease has no detectable symptoms but a mammogram would be able to highlight potentially cancerous cells. It is for this reason that women over 40 should have annual mammograms. Self-examination of the breasts is a method that every woman should use to check for the presence of tumors in their early stage of growth. Your doctor or other medical practitioner can advise you on the best method of self-examination if you are unsure of the proper technique.

If you think that you may have found a lump it is essential that you seek urgent medical advice. Although research into breast cancer prevention is an ongoing process, there have been a number of breakthroughs recently. The National Cancer Institute has tested a number of drugs that could potentially prevent the disease altogether.

The two drugs that the NCI tested have shown that they have the potential to prevent the cancer are BCPT and Star. The first drug was given to 13,000 women who were at risk of developing the disease and 19,000 were given the second. These large studies showed that the predicted instances of cancer were significantly reduced. However, neither drug has had FDA approval to date.

Of course, it isn't just American women who are at risk of this deadly form of female cancer. Women all around the globe are at risk. Researchers are constantly striving to discover methods of detecting and treating the disease. Women are still dying from this type pf cancer and it is essential that the work continues until the disease is eradicated. Until then, it is vital that all women perform regular self-examinations. Early detection is the best hope that a woman has of overcoming and surviving breast cancer.

Summary:

Although research into breast cancer prevention is an ongoing process, there have been a number of breakthroughs recently. The National Cancer Institute has tested a number of drugs that could potentially prevent the disease altogether.

Cancer Treatment Without Fraud

Prevention efforts seem to have failed. The doctor used the dreaded "C" word...cancer. Now what? We hear a lot of buzz about amazing cures and successes, "If you'll just buy my book, take my pills or visit my center." The very word, cancer, scares us so completely, we believe we're going to die any minute. Sadly, it's those fears the frauds are counting on. They want you to be so afraid you'll try anything...even their product. Many of us are so frozen in fear, we ignore that fact that many forms of cancer are treatable...often, actual cures have been developed and adopted as standard treatment for cancer. Sometimes, the fears generated by frauds can cause us to choose back-alley, ineffective treatments instead of viable ones recommended by our doctors. If we just calm down and begin to study the situation, we can often relieve our fears and make rational decisions that will avoid the frauds and help our doctors help us heal.

Natural Cancer Cure...and other fraudulent claims:

Frauds come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Perhaps the biggest price people pay is chasing after these things when sound treatments are available. You will rarely hear a reputable doctor use the word, "cure," when referring to cancer. Immediately, then, a red flag should go up in your mind if someone is offering or claiming a cure. Other claims that should strike you as suspicious are ones that suggest standard cancer treatments, like radiation or chemotherapy kill people. Let's get this straight right now...people die from some types of cancer. Some terminal cancer patients choose to receive experimental treatments in a last ditch effort to try and slow the disease.

Do Your Cancer Research:

Biopsy is usually the first bit of research done to verify a suspicion of cancer. That's where the doctor collects cells for the lab to analyze. Ask your doctor for a paper copy of the test results. This will give you the exact name of the cancer, if the cancer is malignant (harmful), and other useful information. Based on this, your doctor will recommend other tests to determine the stage (extent of growth) or grade (speed of growth) and treatment options to consider. Take lots of notes and ask lots of questions! While continuing the test/treatment recommendations of your doctor, take this information to a second opinion appointment with another doctor, not associated with the first one. While doctors are highly educated, they are human. Doctors and their staffs make mistakes. Second opinions are so you can head off mistakes before they happen.

Awareness and understanding of standard treatment options, risk factors, success rates, unique terminology and second opinions will all help you be a better patient, active in the treatment of your disease. This is why, before the second opinion appointment, you need to research the information from your doctor. Search reputable sources on the Internet for everything you can find about your specific cancer. Yes, you'll need a dictionary and medical encyclopedia. A great place to begin your research is the U.S. National Cancer Institute. It's where I've found most of my reliable cancer information.

Print all the information about the cancer, stages, grades, treatment options, success rates, survival rates and treatment centers. Highlight the parts that apply to you and write questions for your doctors. Take all the information with you to all your appointments with your doctors. Make sure to point out when their opinions differ and gauge their reactions. If their recommended treatments differ from what your research shows, ask them why. Some doctors will be humble, thank you, and offer to look into it further. Other doctors will need to be replaced, as was the case with my wife's father.

My father-in-law's doctor made a mistake, treating a very aggressive life-threatening cancer with cosmetic surgery. By following the steps I've listed in this article, I was able to convince the new doctors to follow-up with radiation to significantly reduce the probability of relapse. Since, with his cancer, relapse is almost always fatal, it was better to be safe, even if it cost the HMO a couple more bucks.

Some doctors and HMO's get a little confused as to who makes your health care decisions.

Cancer Treatment Team Leadership:

The Oncologist (cancer doctor), your primary doctor and often other specialists are essential leaders in the successful treatment of your cancer but you are in charge. They will present you with options, including diet, supplements, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and a vast amount of information for you to digest to make informed decisions. If you do your homework, you can control the fear, eliminate the frauds, reduce the mistakes and make the right decisions in your fight against cancer.

HAMPTON ROADS CHILDREN HELP STOMP OUT CANCER

Hope; a four letter word, so simple yet complex. For children receiving treatment from the world's largest pediatric facility, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, "hope" requires believing in research, trusting doctors and nurses and depending on the kindness of donors so that they may continue to breathe life.

For frauds to use this to get you to distrust a doctor's standard treatment, however limited the success rate, should be considered a crime. The only time you should consider experimental treatments or claims of those outside of the medical community is if you have a terminal condition and you've exhausted all accepted medical treatments. You're a grown-up, now. You should get all the objective advice and information you can, about every treatment you're considering, but people trying to sell you non-standard treatments are not objective...you need to do your own homework...and this is the most important homework assignment you may ever get.

Children in Hampton Roads have come together with inspirational music leader Star 94.1 and the Omicron Pi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to assist in St. Jude's efforts to stomp out cancer with the "Hot Summer Step-Off for Hope." The step-off will showcase children between the ages of 11 and 18 either praise dancing or stepping. Many auditioned, but only six teams have been chosen to compete in the step-off 4 p.m. Saturday, September 23 at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Va.

"During Star's annual St. Jude radiothon, we always have children who want to help out but don't have the funds," stated on-air personality Stephanie Thomas, "so we saw the step-off as an opportunity to give children a chance to really help other children by showcasing and using their talent."

The Hot Summer Step-Off for Hope showcases not only the talent of its participants, but highlights the importance of community and charitable services.

Tickets for the event are $9 and can be purchased by calling 757-671-1000 or at the door the day of the event.

8 Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer

Women should focus on keeping breast health through good lifestyle and dietary choices. Here are eight ways to help you prevent breast cancer. They are supported with many researches and studies. You should embark them all if possible.

1. You should be more active. A recent Norwegian study discovered that women who exercised on a regular basis cut their breast cancer risk by 72 percent.

2. You should eat more unrefined seed foods. They all contain phytoestrogens. If you eat foods rich in these elements, you are 4 times less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. You should consume whole grains, beans, nuts, edible seeds, fruits and vegetables with their seeds.

3. You should eat less vegetable oil and increase the consumption of animal fat and dairy products. Consume yogurt, cheese, milk, butter, and olive oil on a daily basis, and eat meat from time to time.

4. You should eat less tofu and soy beverage. The isoflavone found in soy causes breast cancer cells to grow rapidly. On the other hand, eat more miso and tamari. Studies have found that they are very effective in preventing cancer.

5. You should eat foods rich in antioxidants. At the same time, avoid supplements of vitamins E and C. It was discovered that supplements increase breast cancer risk. Eat five to seven servings of dark green and bright red/orange foods every day.

6. You should sleep in the dark. Recent studies found out that exposure to light at night increases the risk of breast cancer by at least 36 percent.

7. You should drink red clover blossom infusion. Drink a quart of red clover infusion every week.

8. You should eat seaweed as a vegetable. Consume at least a half-cup serving per week. Wakame, kombu, kelp, and alaria are very effective.

If you follow these eight tips you will greatly increase your chances of preventing breast cancer.

How To Help Cancer Charities With Your Credit Card

Shopping, meals and holidays are just some of the items we put on our credit cards. But credit card spending does not have to be selfish. Credit card holders can use their credit cards to support worthwhile causes such as charities. There are several ways of doing this. Credit card owners can donate to different charities using their credit cards or they can choose a charity credit card to give their chosen charity a donation every time they spend.

How Charity Cards Work

Most charity cards donate in two ways. The first is a lump sum donation given to a charity when someone first takes out a charity card. Additional lump sums may be donated if people keep the card or continue to spend on the credit card. The second method is to donate a percentage of the money spent by the cardholder to the chosen charity. This can range from 0.25% to 1% of the amount spent, depending on the deal and the card chosen.

Giving To Cancer Charities

Cancer is a major killer in industrialised nations and so it is hardly surprising that a number of charities have launched their own credit cards to help their charity efforts. Many of these are supported by large banks. Cancer Research UK is the UK's largest cancer charity. The organisation's credit card is supported by Halifax and works like other Halifax cards. There is no annual fee and the card offers a low balance transfer fee for six months. Halifax donates 0.25% of money spent on the card to Cancer Research UK.

Inflamatory breast cancer is associated with a very guarded prognosis, but therapeutic innovation in ongoing. Many cancers metastasize by way of lymphatic vessels. By definition, inflamatory breast cancer is associated with a high degree of lymphatic involvement, making inflamatory breast cancer particularly prone to systemic metastasis and therefore more difficult to treat. One major study suggests that three year survival in untreated inflamatory breast cancer patients is less than 10%. That said, it is important to realize that numerous subtypes of inflamatory breast cancer exist and that each individual situation is different.

Another cancer charity has raised £1,000,000 with its charity card. The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Charity Card is sponsored by MBNA. The purchase donation is the same as that offered by the Cancer Research credit card. However, MBNA also offers an additional donation for online applications.

Other Ways Of Giving To Charity

Charity credit cards work well for those who spend regularly on their credit cards. A donation rate of 0.25% means that 25 pence of every £100 spent goes to the charity. Some people may find that donating the proceeds of a cash back credit card (which gives more than 0.5% of annual spending in a lump sum each year) may be another good way to help a charity.

Shopping Around

As with other credit cards it is worth looking around for the best credit card deals for charity cards. Many charity cards offer 0% balance transfer rates and purchase rates for fixed periods. Some offer low standard interest rates as well. There are many websites that offer comparisons of credit cards and charity credit cards. The sites look at balance transfer and purchase rates, introductory offers, standard interest rates and other incentives for credit card buyers. Shopping around allows people to get the best deal for themselves and still contribute to a good cause.

Inflamatory Breast Cancer - Alternative Treatment Guide

Inflamatory breast cancer, or inflamatory carcinoma, is a type of breast cancer characterized by diffuse infiltration of the dermal lymphatics by inflamatory cells. While results of convential treatments are inconclusive, alternative methods of Inflamatory breast cancer treatment have proved extremely effective. Patients with inflamatory breast cancer generally present with thickening of the the skin over the surface of the breast as well as generalized breast swelling. Given the considerable extent of inflammation, the breasts may also appear erythematous (red) and may be abnormally warm to the touch.

Diagnosis of inflamatory breast cancer is difficult because of its unique presentation. Women are taught and encouraged to perform regular self-exams of the breast tissue, but inflamatory breast cancer is often missed because women will not find the "lump" they expect to be diagnostic. This is because inflamatory breast cancer is a diffuse inflamatory process distinct from a focal, encapsulated solid tumor in the traditional sense. This emphasizes the essential importance of annual mammograms in the early detection and prevention of inflamatory breast cancer.

Patients should not be discouraged by statistics, which apply to populations rather than individuals. Moreover, inflamatory breast cancer research is gaining momentum worldwide and therefore constantly increasing the options available to those suffering from inflamatory breast cancer.

Conventional treatment for breast cancer does not appear to improve long-term survival rates - and may actually hasten relapse or death. Details at http://www.symptomhelper.com/inflamatory-breast-cancer.php
