How Can Green Tea Help With Breast Cancer?

It has been scientifically proven that green tea provides us with numerous health benefits. Just recently it has been claimed that green tea helps to fight and prevent breast cancer and this is being researched at the present time. What is most interesting is that the Chinese have been using green tea as a medicinal treatment for diseases for over 4000 years.

Cancer Diet

In studies it has been shown that green tea helps in preventing prostate cancer and reducing the risk of esophageal cancer in chronic smokers.

Contained within Green Tea is an antioxidant called polyphenol EGCG which inhibits cancer cells from reproducing. It is also known that Polyphenol can kill harmful cancer cells whilst leaving the healthy ones alone. But it is not only the polyphenol contained within green tea that is helpful to us but it also rich in minerals such as aluminum, fluoride, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and other polyphenols and because of these it is known to be effective in lower cholesterol levels and preventing blood clots forming. It has been proven that green tea acts in helping to effectively strengthen our immune systems as well as being effective in helping to treat rheumatoid arthritis, heart diseases and infections.

It is also commonly believed that green tea is able to help prevent tooth decay as well as aiding people with weight loss. Although green tea and black tea come from the same plant there are in fact completely different. Green tea, which is now becoming more popular across the globe is not fermented where as black tea is.

There have been a number of experiments carried out on rats with green tea and studies have indicated that those rats drinking green tea were found to have their tumors reduce in size and in others the development slowed. Yet in rats who drank just water there was no slowing or reduction in the growth of their tumors of any kind. The type of results being produced by these studies is certainly providing us with hope that green tea could be used to fight cancer, however there have been no conclusive results provided on humans as yet and many more years of study are required before a determination can be made of green tea’s effectiveness against cancer.

It is thought that drinking three to four cups of green tea daily are considered to be effective as helping to prevent cancer in us, but the green tea which comes in capsule form is not seen as being as effective. Green tea should be drunk at all times without milk or sugar, and although three to four cups of green tea seems a lot to drink, it isn’t really when usually people will drink much more coffee or fizzy drinks in a day. Although green tea does contain caffeine (which is a problem for some people) it contains less that the same would be found in a cup of coffee, but by drinking large quantities of green tea you may find you develop insomnia or sleep patterns become disrupted.

A large amount of supermarkets and grocery stores stock both caffeinated and decaffeinated green tea products in various flavours and certainly women who have breast cancer may want to consider drinking green in their fight against the disease.

Skin Cancer Myths... Are You Safe?

Sara spends much of her summer near the beach. She lives in a mild climate and is very athletic. She oves to swim, bike, and play games outdoors. Sara knows the dangers of the sun and so she opts for tanning salons to get her 'golden glow' while being sure to apply sunscreen every day before heading out. Joseph lives in a cooler, northern climate. The summers can be very humid, but most of the year is mild or even below freezing during the harshest winter months. The beach has never been much of a draw for him and he spends most of his time doing indoor activities or at his job. Joseph doesn't worry about sunscreen and only had one sunburn that he can remember and that was when he was a child.

Photos Newport Beach

Which of these examples do you most associate yourself with? Did you know that Sara and Joseph are both at risk of developing skin cancer? We have all heard the warnings about the dangers of sun exposure. We know all about the importance of wearing sunscreen and hats. But are YOU protected from skin cancer?

Consider these myths and facts:

- Myth: Tanning Beds are Safer than the Sun

20 minutes of exposure in a tanning bed is roughly equivalent to four hours in the sun. Although sun beds use UVA rather than UVB rays, 'The Skin Cancer Answer' states that "UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin than UVB, can cause skin cancer, and may suppress the immune system."

- Myth: Wearing Sunscreen at the Beach is Protection

85 percent of UV rays can even make it through on cloudy days. That means you are equally at risk in the car, walking the dog or letting your children out to play at any time of year - even when you're not at the beach. Of course, you are usually less attired at the beach and so covering up is recommended even when wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen also wears off with sweat and water and should always be applied every two hours or after getting wet.

- Myth: Having a Tan Means You're More Protected

Dark skinned individuals are less likely to develop cancer, but tanned skin is actually damaged skin. Repeated tanning injures the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.

So how do you plan to protect your family this year? Some suggestions are to limit exposure to the sun - especially for infants. Examine your skin for early signs of damage. Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and apply it at least 30 minutes before exposure and every two hours after that. Teach your children good safety habits and be sure you and they are covered up when outdoors.

Ovarian Cancer - Don't Ignore the Warning Signs

Around 1.5 percent of women are likely to develop ovarian cancer at some stage of their life. It is less common than breast cancer but is considered as the most serious and fatal of all gynecological cancers. The reason for this is that the cancer is usually advanced before it is diagnosed, making treatment difficult. The ovaries cannot be easily examined and, because the warning signs are unclear, late diagnosis is common. Because of the lack of screening tests available, it is imperative to know the early symptoms and the possible risk factors.

- Myth: Taking Care Of Your Skin Now Will Protect You

Sadly, skin cancer can take 20 or more years to develop. The Skin Cancer Foundation states that most people receive about 80 percent of their lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood is estimated to double the risk of melanoma later in life. Taking better care now will reduce the risk, but not eliminate the damage already done.

Understanding ovarian cancer

The ovaries are two small organs that are a part of the female reproductive system and they are situated each side of the uterus. These ovaries contain germ cells that become eggs which are released when the woman menstruates. They also produce estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that adjust the menstrual cycle and have an effect on the growth of breasts and body hair as well as affecting the development of the female body shape.

What types of tumors are there?

This normally happens in an organised manner but occasionally they grow abnormally and form a growth that we know as a tumor.

This tumor may be benign or it may be malignant. If it is benign, it is not cancerous and does not spread to other parts of the body. A malignant tumor, on the other hand, is cancerous and will often spread, making mestastases or secondary cancers. Ovarian cancer is malignant and can occur in either one or both of the ovaries. There are three main groups that are related to the cells where the cancer starts.

Epithelial ovarian cancer, as its name implies, grows in the epithelium which is the surface of the ovary. It is the most common and accounts for around 90 percent of ovarian cancer. It mainly affects post menopausal women. Another kind of epithelial tumor is a borderline tumor which grows much more slowly than its regular counterpart. These can normally be removed successfully even if diagnosed at an advanced stage. There is a very rare form of ovarian cancer called germ cell ovarian cancer that starts in the cells that develop into eggs. This only accounts for about 5 percent of ovarian cancers and usually occurs only in women under 30. The other five percent of ovarian cancers are generally sex-chord stromal cell ovarian cancer that affects the ovary cells responsible for female hormones. It can affect women of all ages.

Who is at risk of getting ovarian cancer?

The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown but there are some risk factors that have been identified through research. Although having these risk factors may increase your chances of developing ovarian cancer, they do not mean that you will necessarily get the disease. However, knowledge of these risk factors can be helpful. If you are concerned by having any of these risk factors, it is important to talk to your healthcare professional.

Factors that may increase your risk of ovarian cancer include:

Age

- Around 90 percent of ovarian cancers affect women over 40.

Cultural background

- Caucasian women in western society have higher rates of ovarian cancer than African or Asian women. Number of pregnancies - Women who have never been pregnant appear to have a higher risk of ovarian cancer.

Family history

- Between 5 and 10% of ovarian cancers are genetic. Researchers believe that the genes responsible for breast cancer (BRCA1 and BRCA2) are involved in almost all cases of familial ovarian cancer as well as familial breast cancer. It is also thought that these same damaged genes may be responsible for some endometrial and colon cancers. If you are genetically predisposed to any ovarian, breast, endometrial or colon cancers, you may have an increased risk of getting ovarian cancer.

Infertility and taking fertility drugs

- Women who have had fertility drugs may be at a higher risk although infertility itself is a risk factor so this cannot be taken as a clear indication.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

- The use of estrogen only HRT which is usually when you have had a hysterectomy, has been identified as a possible risk factor for ovarian cancer, particularly if you have been on this therapy for over ten years.

Lifestyle factors

- Obesity is a risk factor associated with ovarian cancer as is a diet that is high in fat.

Can I reduce the risk of ovarian cancer? Currently, there are no known procedures to prevent or detect early ovarian cancer but there are ways to reduce the risks.

Some of these are:

Oral contraceptives

- Research has found that the use of oral contraceptives can cut the risk of ovarian cancer by up to 60 percent if taken for a period of five years during your life. Pregnancy and breastfeeding - Breastfeeding delays ovulation after childbirth and therefore decreases your risk of ovarian cancer. However, there is no guarantee that breastfeeding will stop you from developing ovarian cancer.

Enjoy a low fat diet

- A high fat diet has been identified as a risk factor in ovarian cancer. Therefore, it makes sense to stick to a low fat diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Tubal ligation or hysterectomy

- These operations are only performed with a valid medical reason but it is believed that they both reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. People with a strong family history of ovarian cancer may opt to speak to a genetic counselor that can assess whether you are at risk of developing the disease. If your family history suggests the damaged genes associated with ovarian, breast, endometrial, or colon cancer, it may be wise to have genetic testing. If these tests show the damaged BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, you may be refe.rred to a gynecological oncologist to consider ways to reduce your risk.

Early symptoms of ovarian cancer

Because there is no screening test available for ovarian cancer, it is recommended that you have a regular pelvic vaginal checkup to see if there are any changes in your ovaries. It is also vital that you consult your healthcare specialist if you notice any possible signs of this illness. Because the symptoms are often common to many other medical conditions, diagnosis of ovarian cancer can be difficult However, if you have any of the following symptoms that are unusual for you and that persist for more than a week, see your doctor without delay.

Some symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:

Stomach discomfort of pain in the pelvic area

Persistent nausea or wind.

Feeling constantly bloated or 'full'.

Unexplained weight gain.

Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

Bowel changes

Frequency or urgency in urination

Lethargy.

Pain during intercourse.

Unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Sometimes, ovarian cancers are wrongly diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome or menopause so if you are concerned, ask to be referred to a gynecological oncologist who can order tests to rule out ovarian cancer. It is rare that these symptoms will be ovarian cancer but if it is, early detection gives an excellent chance of survival.

Diagnosing ovarian cancer

If your doctor suspects ovarian cancer, you will be referred to a gynecological oncologist who will organize tests which may include any or all of the following:

An internal pelvic examination.

Blood tests

Chest and stomach x-rays.

A barium enema to rule out bowel problems

Ultrasound scans

If the results show a likelihood of ovarian cancer, you will be recommended to have an operation to confirm the diagnosis (none of the abovementioned tests can be sure). During the operation, if the surgeon finds ovarian cancer, they will normally remove the cancer as well as the ovaries. It is important to understand before the surgery that this may happen so learn all you can about your illness and the outcomes before the operation.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a cancer that affects the breast tissue. The primary victims of this type of cancer are females. Statistics show that approximately one out of 11 to 12 women of the Western world are affected by breast cancer. Medical researches have tried aggressively to find a solution to detect the problem earlier or to treat the problem. About 20 percent of the women affected by breast cancer still fall prey to it and eventually die. In fact, breast cancer ranks second in cancer deaths for women. Most breast cancer starts in the cells that line up the ducts. There are occasions where the cancer cells originate from the lobules, and then spread to other tissues.

Many breast cancer diagnosis starts in the checking of lumps I the breast. Although most cases of lumps are benign, meaning they are not cancerous, but doctors often ask a patient to undergo biopsy to make sure that cells are not malignant. Most of the lumps are caused by cysts. These lumps may cause pain and swelling of the breast accompanied at times by clear or cloudy discharge in the nipple which happens before the menstrual cycle period is about to begin in a woman. The symptoms may lead to the person to seek a medical check-up.

Male Victims

Breast cancer is not limited to women though; male victims are present as well. The breast of both male and female have identical tissues, so a man is also prone to acquiring the cancer. It is believed that females are more prone to men because the breast of a woman constantly goes through growth changing hormones, thus the cells are more exposed to cancerous change.

Breast Cancer Awareness

As more and more people fall ill to breast cancer, the month of October has been deemed as breast cancer month, to commemorate those who passed away from the cancer, the family and friends survived by the deceased. A pink ribbon is the symbol that a person is joining in the commemoration.

Start Beating Mesothelioma Cancer Today Through Awareness and Understanding

Mesothelioma is a serious and very aggressive form of cancer. People who have mined asbestos, manufactured asbestos products, installed asbestos insulation, or removed asbestos may be at risk for developing mesothelioma. In addition, family members of those who have worked with asbestos, people who have lived near asbestos mines or processing plants, or anyone who has inhaled asbestos fibers may also be at risk for developing mesothelioma.

There are a range of tests and procedures used to diagnose mesothelioma. X-rays, CT scans, and/or MRI scans are performed to determine the presence of mesothelioma. If there is a positive indication of mesothelioma, or if further testing is still needed to determine the presence of mesothelioma, the scans are followed-up with a needle biopsy or an open biopsy. Treatment options for mesothelioma vary according to age, overall health, location of the disease, and extent of the disease. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, alone or in combination, are standard treatment options for mesothelioma. Experimental treatments, such as those used in clinical trials, may also be an option.

Bilirubin reaches high numbers, rises the level of alkaline phosphatase, transaminaz. With the palpation the increased dense liver is determined, the increased gall bladder sometimes palpates. In the absence of the blockade of kholedokha during intravenous kholegrafii they reveal the so-called off gall bladder. They refine diagnosis with an ultrasonic study and the computer X-ray laminography. The radical operation, which can be produced rarely, includes, besides kholetsistektomii, the resection of the right share of the liver, sometimes to pankreatoduodenektomiyu. Cancer of extra-hepatic bilious ducts more frequently is observed at the age of 60-70 years. In half of the cases common bilious duct is surprised.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that could have been prevented and is not the fault of the victim, but the fault of the companies that did not protect workers or others against the hazards of asbestos. Financial security for victims and their families, including compensation of medical expenses, pain and suffering, burial expenses, and after-death stability for families afflicted, may, therefore, be accessible through the law.

There are many different types of support groups, as well, available to mesothelioma patients and their families including formal groups that focus on learning about mesothelioma or dealing with feelings, informal groups, social groups, groups only for those with mesothelioma, and groups for those with mesothelioma including family members and friends. Hospitals, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers have, or can obtain, a listing of such groups within your local area.

Cancer of gall bladder

Cancer of gall bladder

appears usually at the age of older than 50 years, it is more frequent in women. On the morphological structure it presents the adenocarcinoma of different differentiation with the infiltrative type of increase, rarely (not more than 15%) - flat cell cancer. Tumor gradually strikes entire bubble, applies to the liver, puzyrnyy and common bilious duct, adjacent organs (stomach, duodenum, thick gut). The metastases of cancer of gall bladder are revealed in the liver, the regional lymph nodes, the peritoneum, the ovaries, the pleura. Disease is diagnosed late (70-90% they are inoperable to the time of diagnosis). Early cancer of gall bladder - random finding with kholetsistektomii apropos of gallstone disease or cholecystitis.

The attentive analysis of clinical symptoms, augmented by inspection, contributes to timely diagnostics of this illness. The earliest symptom - pain in by right subcostal area, epigastral region with the irradiation into the back. Characteristically night strengthening of pain. In comparison with the previous period in the patients with cholecystitis, by gallstone disease it is possible to reveal a change in the nature of pain (constant, intensive). Are noted nausea, vomiting, loss of the mass of body. When the thrombosis of bilious ducts begins, is developed dropsy and empyema of gall bladder, jaundice, expansion of the proximal divisions of ducts kholangit, second cirrhosis of the liver.

Tumor is the adenocarcinoma of different differentiation with the infiltrative type of increase. Tumor on the elongation of ducts grows, it implicates hepatic vein and artery, portal vein, the pancreas, duodenum. Metastases are formed in the regional lymph nodes and the liver. Clinical symptoms and the methods of diagnostics the same as with cancer of gall bladder. In this case is very informative the percutaneous chrespechenochnaya of kholangiografiya, which helps to reveal the level of the arrangement of tumor. They confirm diagnosis during the operation, but biopsy frequently proves to be difficult. Radical operation can be performed rarely, in essence with cancer of the distap'nogo division of common bilious duct. In this case simultaneously is produced pankreatoduodenektomiyu.

Cancer of large duodenal papilla is primary tumor (40%) or other germinating into this zone tumors (bilious ducts, duodenum, the pancreas). To distinguish these tumors is difficult, takeing into account the similarity of histological structure. The clinical symptoms of cancer of large duodenal papilla appear early, when the dimensions of tumor are still small. The rapid pitting of tumor is observed. Among the clinical symptoms, which distinguish this illness, transient mechanical jaundice, the loss of the blood with the feces, anemia. Remaining symptoms are characteristic for mechanical jaundice (it kholangit and other).

Basic diagnostic methods they are the duodenoscopy with the biopsy, relaxation of duodenografiya. The prospects for surgical treatment are relatively favorable, takeing into account the possibility of the early development of cancer of papilla and slow development. After pankreatoduodenektomii 30-40% of patients live 5 years without it is indicative disease. Palliative value with inoperable cancer of gall bladder, bile tracts and large duodenal papilla have different biliodigestivnye anastomoses or external drainage of bile tracts for the liquidation of jaundice. Chemotherapy can lead to the temporary remission (20- 30% of cases). Use shch-ftoruratsil, ftorafur, mitomycin s, adriamycin, sometimes the combinations of these preparations.
