Breast cancer is the presence of malignant cancer cells in the breast area of a patient. It is ranked as the second cause of death in females suffering from cancer. There are several treatments available such as surgery; radiation therapy, and systemic therapy.
Surgery
In certain stages of breast cancer, undergoing surgery and removing the lump may be enough to stop the spread of cancer. The process might include taking a larger chunk of the mammary gland, making sure that the affected area and a substantial margin is surgically removed. If the tissue removed is believed not to eliminate all the cancer cells, a follow-up surgery may be required.
Administering this form of treatment usually is done over a long period of five to seven weeks, five days a week for about 15 minutes per session. Radiation therapy cannot be a one-time thing because by proceeding with the treatment, normal healthy cells are also damaged during the process. Unlike cancer cells, healthy cells can repair themselves, and by limiting the dosage taken by the body per session, it allows the body to heal the damaged cells. Some side-effects that come from radiation therapy are: fatigue due to the body’s repairing of the cells; reddening of the skin; muscle stiffness; mild swelling; tenderness in the treated area; long term shrinking of the irradiated breast.
Systemic Therapy
There are three types of systemic therapy: chemotherapy; hormonal treatment; and immune treatment.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy can be administered before and after the surgery. It is used to shrink the size of the tumor and also to stop it from recurring again.
Hormonal Treatment
Patients that are positive for estrogen receptor tumors are advised to receive hormonal treatment after going through chemotherapy.
Immune Treatment
Usually immune treatment are only administered to patients who have metastasized diseases, but lately studies have shown that patients in the early stages of breast cancer will have significant benefits by getting this treatment.

Breast Cancer Ribbon
These days almost every worthy cause finds itself a proper ribbon, without getting into the debate about the use of ribbons and how people use them, there are not many ribbons that I know of that are more important than the breast cancer ribbon. Breast cancer is a dangerous enemy, while it is true that the awareness to its risks and the understanding of the prevention measures that need to be taken on a regular basis has increased over the years and had probably saved many lives, some people are still not aware of breast cancer and others prefer to live in some sort of denial.
First of all it shows the most important thing a person can show, it shows that you care, its shows that you are willing to give a little of your time or energy to try and educate more people, to warn some others and to maybe, just by doing this very small action contribute to saving a life.
So why is it important to use the pink ribbon and join the fight against breast cancer? This is not a joke, sometimes awareness is all that separates the ill from the healthy and the dead from the living, we are at an age where people are learning of new dangers every day, and with all these upcoming potential dangers of terrorism and natural disasters breast cancer has been here long enough and has cause so much pain and suffering that it certainly deserves to be treated as something we should all remember, even on a daily basis.
Every October is the international breast cancer awareness month, this is the time to try and do the most to increase the public awareness of this disease, and educate woman about the ways they can fight breast cancer, this month is also dedicated to raising money for the many different organizations and foundations that are working all year round on helping victims of breast cancer, some of these patients have no money and no funds they can use to try and treat the cancer, and these organizations help them get the support that they need.
So all you got to do is just place one of these pink ribbons on your shirt of jacket, and show the solidarity you have with the breast cancer patients, the victims and the family and friends of those who have been effected by this terrible disease. Remember that you do not have to limit yourself only to the month of October, and that it is enough for only one person to ask you about this ribbon - once a year to make a huge difference, think about hundreds, if not thousands of people like you doing the same thing every day, and each one of these people is approached by an uneducated person, how many lives can be speared.
Lets hope that in the future the fight against breast cancer, as the fight against all kinds of cancer, will achieve its goals and that this disease will claim less victims, that modern medicine and science will find cures and that more and more people around the world will live healthier and happier lives.

Jonathan Mayheart has been writing and publishing his articles on the internet for a few months, he currently writes about Breast Cancer and its cultural and personal effects for ZupaTips.com
Breast cancer occurs due to the irrepressible growth of cells in the breast that invades the nearby tissues and spreads throughout the body. These collections of irrepressible growth of tissue are called tumors or malignant tumors. However, not all tumors are cancerous. Breast cancer has been diagnosed in large numbers in North America and Europe. In 2001, about 200,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the United States alone. Every woman has a 1 in 8 risk of developing breast cancer, but the risk of dying from breast cancer is much lower, barely 1 in 28.
Women who started their periods before 12 years old, women who had menopause after 50 years old, women who never had children or had them age 30 or older, or women with genetic mutation. In recent times genetic mutations for breast cancer have become a hot topic of research.
The breast cancer tumor has the following symptoms: lump or thickening that appears on the breast or underarm, changes in the breast's shape, nipple turned inwards followed by colorless discharge, red or scaled skin or nipple, or ridges on the breast skin. If a woman experiences any of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean she has breast cancer. In such a case she should undergo a breast cancer personal check-up. It is estimated that 95% of breast cancer is detected through personal check-up. The breast cancer personal check-up includes checking for lumps in the breasts after each menstrual period, puckering the skin, and checking for nipple retraction or discharge. For consistent result, every woman should do a breast cancer personal check-up at the same time every month. Various other techniques such as mammography, thermography, ultrasonography, computerized tomography scan etc, can also help detect breast cancer.
Breast cancer treatments include surgery that removes cancerous tissues, with breast conservation therapy (BCT) being one such surgery. Other breast cancer treatments include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy and biologic therapy. Radiotherapy is a common breast cancer treatment, and radiation treatment and chemotherapy may follow surgery to ensure the destruction of the stray cancer cells.
Even after undergoing many or all of these breast cancer treatment measures, unfortunately almost half the women suffer from a recurrence of the disease.

Cause of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is very common in women. In fact, it is the second leading cause of death for women with cancer. There are three times more cases of breast cancer than any of the other gynecological cancers put together. Cases of breast cancer have increased from one out of 20 women, to one out of every seven women who have acquired the disease. This disease is not exclusive for females alone. Statistics show that out of 100 women having breast cancer, there will be one male patient developing this kind of cancer.
Age
A girl who starts having her menstrual cycle before the age of 12, or a woman who starts going through menopause after 50 years old are at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
Nationality
Studies have shown that certain racial groups such as European and African women tend to have higher risk of breast cancer compared to Asian women. However, studies also show inconsistencies in this theory since the statistics change once geography is included in the study, since an Asian women living in a western country showed the same risk as the original inhabitants.
Diet
High consumption of corn oil, oil secreted by meat, and polyunsaturated fats increase the risk of person acquiring breast cancer. Monounsaturated fats like canola oil and olive oil promote better heath.
Heredity
Though there is no available proof suggesting the breast cancer is linked to heredity in any way, it is still believe that patients who have a family history of breast cancer are at higher risk of acquiring breast cancer.
Alcohol
Researches showed that women taking more alcohol have 6% increased risk of getting the cancer as compared to those who do not, or consume moderately.
Hormones
A test was conducted in June 2005 where findings noted that women taking hormonal drugs, like medical estrogen, have a higher risk of acquiring breast cancer.
Other factors believe to be risk factors include not having a child, or delayed first childbirth, or not breastfeeding.

Dietary Implications for Prevention and Treatment of Cancer
INTRODUCTION
What is Cancer? Cancer is the uncontrollable growth of body cells. In the body, cells grow in an orderly fashion, but cancer cells continue to grow out-of-control. There are different kinds of cancer and they grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. Cancer located in one part of the body may spread to other parts via the blood and lymphatic system. When this happens, it is called metastasis and the cancer is called metastatic cancer. Cancer is normally named according to the part of the body where it originated.
For example if breast cancer spreads to the lungs, it is still called breast cancer.
Cancer is caused by a variety of environmental and/or genetic factors. The relative importance of cancers as a cause of death is increasing, mostly because of the increasing population of aged people and in part because of reductions in mortality from some other causes, namely infectious diseases. The incidence of cancers of the lung, colon and rectum, breast and prostate generally increases and is associated with economic development, while the incidence of stomach cancer usually declines with economic development.
Cancer is now a major cause of mortality throughout the world, killing 6.7 million people worldwide and, in the developed world, is generally exceeded only by cardiovascular diseases. An estimated 24.6 million people living with cancer and at least 10 million new cases each year. This accounts for a financial burden of US $ 189 billion per year. As developing countries become urbanized, patterns of cancer, including those most strongly associated with diet, tend to shift towards and resemble those of economically developed countries. Between 2000 and 2020, the total number of cases of cancer in the developing world is predicted to increase by 73 % and, in the developed world, to increase by 29 %, largely as a result of an increase in the number of aged people.
Dietary factors are estimated to account for approximately 30 % of cancers in industrialized countries, making diet second only to tobacco as a theoretically preventable cause of cancer. This proportion is thought to be about 20 % in developing countries, but may grow with dietary change, particularly if the importance of other causes, especially infections, declines. Cancer rates change as people move between countries as a result of traveling and migration and adopt different dietary behaviours, further implicating dietary factors in the cause of cancer.
DIETARY IMPLICATIONS & MAJOR TYPES OF CANCER
1. Stomach cancer
* One of the most common cancers worldwide.
* Three million new cases diagnosed each year.
* Diet is thought to be important in the cause of this disease.
* Account for more than 2 million deaths worldwide each year.
* High intakes of some traditionally preserved salted foods, especially meats and pickles, and with salt per se, increases the risk of stomach cancer.
* Risk is decreased by high intakes of fruits and vegetables.
2. Colorectal cancer
* Colorectal cancer incidence rates are approximately ten-fold higher in developed than in developing countries.
* Diet-related factors may account for up to 80 % of the differences in rates between countries.
* The best established diet-related risk factor is overweight/obesity.
* Physical activity has been consistently associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer (but not of rectal cancer).
* There is almost universal agreement that some aspects of the "westernized" diet are a major determinant of risk; for instance, there is some evidence that risk is increased by high intakes of meat and fat, and that risk is decreased by high intakes of fruits and vegetables.
* Dietary fiber, folate and calcium, may assist in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
* Consumption of meat, in particular preserved and red meat is associated with colorectal cancer.
* Poultry and fish may assist in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
* Vitamins and minerals such as folate and calcium may reduce the risk of colon cancer.
3. Liver cancer
* Approximately 75 % of cases of liver cancer occur in developing countries being much higher in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia than in North America and Europe.
* The major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma, the main type of liver cancer, is chronic infection with hepatitis B, and to a lesser extent, hepatitis C virus.
* Ingestion of foods contaminated with the mycotoxin, aflatoxin is an important risk factor among people in developing countries, together with active hepatitis virus infection.
* Excessive alcohol consumption is the main diet-related risk factor for liver cancer in industrialized countries, probably via the development of cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis.
4. Pancreatic cancer
* Cancer of the pancreas is more common in industrialized countries than in developing countries.
* Overweight and obesity possibly increase the risk.
* Some studies have suggested that risk is increased by high intakes of meat.
* High intakes of vegetables, may decrease the risk.
5. Lung cancer
* Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world.
* Heavy smoking increases the risk by around 30-fold, and smoking causes over 80% of lung cancers in developed countries.
* Lung cancer patients typically consume lower intake of fruits, vegetables and related nutrients (such as ß-carotene).
* The possible effect of diet on lung cancer risk remains controversial.
6. Breast cancer
* Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and the most common cancer among women.
* Incidence rates are about five times higher in industrialized countries than in less developed countries and Japan.
* Dietary habits and physical activity may be possible risk factors.
* Estradiol and perhaps other hormones play a key role in the etiology of breast cancer, and it is possible that any further dietary effects on risk are mediated by hormonal mechanisms.
* The only dietary factors which have been shown to increase the risk for breast cancer are obesity and alcohol. Obesity increases breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women by around 50 %, probably by increasing serum concentrations of free estradiol. Obesity does not increase risk among premenopausal women, but obesity in premenopausal women is likely to lead to obesity throughout life and therefore to an eventual increase in breast cancer risk.
* Alcohol increases the risk of beast cancer by 10 % for an average of one alcoholic drink every day.
* Diets including fat, meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, fiber and phyto-estrogens are inconclusive.
7. Endometrial cancer
* Endometrial cancer risk is about three-fold higher in obese women than in lean women.
* Diets high in fruits and vegetables may reduce risk.
* Diets high in saturated or total fat may increase risk.
8. Prostate cancer
* Positively associated with a "westernized" diet.
* Diets high in red meat, dairy products and animal fat have frequently been implicated in the development of prostate cancer.
* Supplements of vitamin E and selenium might have a protective effect.
* Lycopene, primarily from tomatoes, has been associated with a reduced risk.
* Hormones control the growth of the prostate, and diet might influence prostate cancer risk by affecting hormone levels.
9. Kidney cancer
* Overweight and obesity are established risk factors for cancer of the kidney, and may account for up to 30 % of kidney cancers in both men and women.
SUMMARY OF FACTORS AFFECTING THE RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER
Decreased Risk Increased Risk
* Balanced diet Mononutrient diet
* Adequate fiber intake Animal fats & trans-fatty acids
* Fruits and vegetables Preserved meat, salt preserved foods
* Soya Heterocyclic amines
* Fish Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
* n-3 fatty acids Nitrosamines
* Carotenoids Sugary, baked & fried foods
* Vitamins; B2, B6, B9, B12, C, D, E GM foods (possibly)
* Mineral; Calcium, Zinc, Selenium Alcohol
* Non-nutrient plant constituents; Inadequate plant components allium compounds, flavonoids, isoflavones, lignans
* Fruit & vegetable juice Soft drinks & diet drinks containing benzene
* Avoid tobacco use and second-hand Tobacco use tobacco smoke
* Consume less carbohydrate foods Baked carbohydrates that are baked at 120 °C to prevent the formation of acrylamide-a potent carcinogen & neurotoxin.
* Consume moderate amounts of sausages, Sausages, smoked, barbeque meats smoked meat & poultry
* Avoid foods containing preservatives Red meat, condiments, benzoate, nitrites, sorbates, spices butylated hydroxyanisole
* Avoid eating nuts and other grains that are Aflatoxins mouldy * Maintain body weight Overweight & obesity
* Physical activity Sedentary lifestyle
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REDUCING THE RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER
1. Maintain body weight (among adults) such that Body Mass Index is in the range of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 and avoid weight gain (> 5 kg) during adult life.
2. Maintain regular physical activity. The primary goal should be to perform physical activity on most days of the week; 60 minutes per day of moderate-intensity activity, such as walking, may be needed to maintain healthy body weight in otherwise sedentary people. More vigorous activity, such as fast walking, may give some additional benefits for cancer prevention.
3. Consumption of alcoholic beverages is not recommended: if consumed, do not exceed two units per day.
4. Chinese-style fermented foods, salted fish and other highly salted foods should only be consumed in moderation, especially during childhood. Overall consumption of salt-preserved foods and salt should be moderate.
5. Minimize exposure to aflatoxins in foods by eating safe wholesome food from reputable sources.
6. Have a diet which includes at least 400 g per day of total fruits and vegetables.
7. Those who are not vegetarian are advised to moderate consumption of preserved meat (e.g. sausages, salami, bacon, ham).
8. Do not consume foods or drinks when they are at a very hot (scalding hot) temperature.
9. Do not consume foods containing both ascorbic acid and benzoate as these foods may contain high levels of the cancer causing chemical-benzene.
10. Eat baked or fried carbohydrate foods in moderation as there may be the possibility that these foods may contain the potent cancer causing chemical and neurotoxin-acrylamide.

When would women benefit from a saliva test?
- Teenagers with PMS should do a saliva test. It is especially helpful for those who experience PMS before being put on the pill. It is also helpful after being on the pill to determione a guideline for the extent of hormone deficiency before supplementing with progesterone.
- Women who want a base line before any hormone health challenges begin. This option is often not available through our doctors for younger women unless the doctor determines the need. They certainly won't test healthy women.
- Women who would like to know if their Breast Cancer risk would benefit from a saliva test. Dr. Zava has what he calls a Breast cancer profile. "We've been doing some work with Dr. Rebecca Glaser from Ohio. She's a breast surgeon and has been sending us saliva samples from women who have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The breast cancer patient hormone profile we're seeing is high estradiol and testosterone, low progesterone and DHEA-S, and flat cortisol levels, usually created by high night cortisol. I think the hormone profile should, and will, be used in the future as an adjunct to tumor imaging procedures (mammography, sonography, etc.)" says Dr. Zava. Researcher Cowan found that women producing higher levels of progesterone had fewer types of all cancers. This underscores the importance of having balanced hormones before breast cancer surgery.
- Women who desire to go on a program would benefit taking a saliva test before beginning a hormone-balancing program, to know their hormone levels at the starting point. The saliva test often validates how we feel when blood tests do not. Then evaluating after 3 to 6 months on a program is helpful.
- Women with PMS benefit with a saliva test. In PMS stress is often a factor. Stress increases cortisol production. Cortisol blockades some progesterone receptors and thereby prevents progesterone function. The saliva test will reveal a progesterone deficiency due to over production of cortisol produced when under stress.
- Women who have been on a progesterone cream and are not getting good results are advised to do a saliva test to find out what is going on. Lack of absorbtion, weak cream, not using enough or using too much will, all show up on the saliva test.
- Women who want to work with their doctors as they begin a program. Doctors respond to tests. If women can explain the test to their doctors - they at least won't be as likely to hand us an anti-depressant. The test results are signed by a medical doctor which should get their doctor's attention.
- Women who have been on ERT and HRT and are concerned that their estrogen/progesterone levels may be out of balance - putting them at risk for breast cancer would definitely benefit from a saliva test.
- Women who are having problems getting pregnant.
Saliva estrogen and progesterone levels on day 21 of the menstrual cycle of a woman having difficulty conceiving can reveal subnormal progesterone output, suggesting a possible reason for infertility.
- Women with a diagnosis of PCOS would benefit with a saliva test to determine if Dr. Lee's program will work for them. Symptoms of excessive facial/body hair growth, acne, and weight gain about the waist often occur with PCOS. Menstrual periods are often irregular. Saliva testing during the second half of the menstrual cycle (luteal phase) often indicates high-normal estradiol, low progesterone, and high androgens, both DHEAS and testosterone confirming the hormone imbalance with PCOS.
- Aging women will benefit with a saliva test. Evaluating estrogen and progesterone levels to prevent osteoporosis and to monitor hormone levels for those with osteoporosis is very helpful.

Cancer does not affect just one part of your body—it affects all of you and everything in your life. Clinically, it is a disease that manifests itself as dysfunctions in cells that lead to rapid, unstructured growth. These defective cells either kill healthy cells or form tumors. So a holistic approach is needed in treating it. Cancer treatment involves a total care for the patient’s mind, body and spirit. Cancer treatment centers are equipped with a dedicated team of experts who provide comprehensive, personalized treatment. This team helps the patient fight the cancer on many fronts, through a combination of medical, nutritional, physical, psychological and spiritual therapies. There are a number of different medical procedures used to treat cancer. The three common methods of cancer treatment are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. These methods of treatment have been carried out for a very long time. The type of cancer, the extent of the disease, and the general state of the patient’s health are all influential factors in determining the most appropriate cancer treatment combination.
Radiation Therapy
This method is very effective in eliminating cancer cells that threaten to recur in the body of the patient. This option is taken usually only after surgery is performed. Radiation therapy is administered to eliminate the chance of the cancer cells to come back again.
If suffering from this dreadful disease is not horrifying enough, the treatment itself can be such a traumatic experience that these treatment centers become a cancer patient's greatest ally when it comes to fighting the cancer. Along with innovative cancer treatment a cancer patient needs compassion, which these treatment centers provide. They know that a cancer patient is fighting for his life, and their mission is to arm him with every choice, offer him every chance, and empower him to victory. They believe in a patient’s fundamental right to be informed about, and to choose, the best available options for his treatment, and they encourage the patient and his family to be fully involved in every decision. In order to achieve their goals the treatment centers must also include clinical trials, comprehensive education programs and research-backed programs for the latest information about both common and rare cancers.
Treatment Centers provides detailed information on Treatment Centers, Drug Treatment Centers, Cancer Treatment Centers, Alcohol Treatment Centers and more. Treatment Centers is affiliated with Drunk Driving Accidents.
