A returning patient called me yesterday. She was a breast cancer survivor when I saw her as a student intern in Chinese medical school. If I had been more confident at the time, I would have suggested she be diligent in preventing a recurrence of breast cancer, and explained how she might attempt that with Chinese medicine.
Even if I had, however, she might not have followed my advice, because
Chinese medicine's credibility has yet to catch up with its sophistication,
efficacy, and research.
The topic examined
less often is: can Chinese medicine fight cancer directly? Many acupuncture
teachers and practitioners warn us not to claim that it can - they suggest
there's some law against us treating cancer, and you can see how reactive
conservative doctors might be to the idea. They are accustomed to having
control of the treatment of all cancer, regardless of whether they can
help individual patients, or how much damage their therapies cause. Still,
there is research and a clinical track record that suggests Chinese medicine
can do more than just reduce discomforts.
I can't resolve all by myself in this short space the political issues
and ethical issues of alternative medical treatment. But, I suggest that
if a patient who refuses conventional treatment, then their alternative
practitioners should find out everything they can and do all they can to
help the patient recover, or at least become more comfortable.
Even in my small alternative medicine library, I have 2 books on Chinese
herbs for cancer, and a third that summarizes the research on natural compounds
used in cancer therapy. On PubMed, I found even more scientific references
about herbs and breast cancer specifically. It's not the case that there
isn't research on this topic. Instead, as with much Chinese medicine research,
the information is either unknown, or unused by Western physicians. What
follows is a short summary of the scientific information I found (in less
than an hour) on alternative medicine and breast cancer. At the end, I've
provided some herbal formulas for practitioners.
Human Studies on Natural Compounds for Cancer Therapy: John Boik, MacOM,
LAc has contributed a weighty work called Natural Compounds in Cancer Therapy
(Oregon Medical Press, 2001). It not only reviews hundreds of scientific
references, but also explains many specific cancer disease processes. The
following human studies are drawn from that book, but their specific references
are also included.
Scientific research is done either in vitro (test tube), in animals, or
in humans. Knowing that any non-human research is easily discounted by
skeptics, I've chosen only the human studies. However, the other studies
are also interesting and helpful, so if you want more, get Boik's book.
All of the following are specific for breast cancer.
6 Bromelain tablets for 10 days corrected deficient macrophage activity.
(1) Vitamin C was found to not necessarily good for breast cancer and may actually have accelerated some patients' deaths, but those who lived had fewer recurrences.
(2,3) Eleuthrococcus stimulated the immune system in breast cancer patients.
(4) Higher levels of fat intake in breast cancer patients was associated with increased risks of recurrence and death.
(5) In post mastectomy breast cancer patients, there were higher survival rates among those who took enzymes. (6) Enzyme therapy also improved weight gain, fatigue, depression and quality of life.
(6) A diet of 20% fish oil (24g/kg) improved the anti-tumor effect of the chemotherapy drug mitomycin due to enhanced lipid peroxidation. [This was a combined human/animal study where human cells were studied after transplantation to an animal]
(7) Vitamin D3 helps chemotherapy drugs
work better. (8)
Chinese herbs for Breast Cancer
I have access to three sources for Chinese herbs and breast cancer. One
is a book called Anticancer Chinese Drugs by Lien & Li, which surveys
more than 120 plants used to treat cancer, and examines the chemical structure
and effects of individual compounds from those plants. Below are 4 compounds
from this book specifically for breast cancer. Unfortunately, none of these
are among the 500 or so common Chinese herbs referred to in the standard
reference, Materia Medica, by Bensky & Barolet. Note that there are
closer to 12,000 substances called herbs used here and there in Chinese
medicine.
Labiatae I. longitubis inhibits br ca cells in vitro (Lien/Li, 10). Maytansine
(from maytanus oratus, serrata, buchananii, and hookeri) prevents polymerization
of tubulin to microtubules (ibid, 85). (9) 9-hydroxy-2-methyl-ellipticinum
(from ochrosia moorei and borbonica) has therapeutic value in advanced
breast cancer (ibid, 78). (10)
In phase III clinical trials, VP-16 (from podophyllum berberidaceae) has
caused responses in a number of cancers including breast cancer (ibid,
60). (11)
More Science:
A quick search of PubMed for more research on herbs for breast cancer yielded
4 interesting results:
Huang lian (coptis) inhibited tumor growth (gastric, colon, breast)... "These
results indicate that traditional Chinese herbs may represent a new source
of agents designed for selective inhibition of cyclin dependent kinases
in cancer therapy." (12)
Hemsleya amabilis extract significantly inhibited tumor cell growth and
colony formation and promoted tumor cell death.(13)
Triptolide (TPL), a diterpenoid triepoxide purified from the Chinese herb
Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F, in vitro inhibited the proliferation and
colony formation of tumor cells and the antitumor effect of TPL was comparable
or superior with that of conventional antitumor drugs, such as Adriamycin,
mitomycin, and cisplatin. (14)
Huang qi root specifically inhibits gastric cancer cells growth in vitro
- its mechanism is mainly inhibition of cancer cell growth, not attacking
or dismantling of existing cancer cells. (15)
Chinese Herbal Formulas for Breast Cancer (For Practitioner Reference)
My final source is a book called Treating Cancer with Chinese Herbs (Hsu,
Ohai Press, 1990). This book is mainly for practitioners to learn from
and use. It is not scientifically referenced - of course, some Chinese
physicians and writers are not familiar with the Western insistence on
always quoting your sources, so some of this information may have science
behind it. We just can't tell from Hsu's book. But here's a suggestion
patients can try at home:
Combine the juice of 90g of fresh asparagus (or 30g peeled) with yellow
wine (a traditional Chinese wine made from rice) once a day.

A widespread link between heart disease, arthritis, and cancer now seems treatable

What medical condition affects more of us than heart disease, arthritis,
or cancer, and why is it suddenly such a compelling issue?
According to thousands of medical journal articles, Calcification --
also known as calcium deposits, hardening of the arteries, cysts, stones,
and hard plaque -- happens in all those illnesses and more.
And it just struck home for millions.
Throngs of baby boomers are rushing to get checked for calcification
since rock icon David Bowie and former President Clinton had emergency
operations for it. David Letterman, Larry King, CBS's René Syler,
actress Koo Stark, and many pro athletes have it too.
Calcification is the hardening of our body tissue by calcium salts. These
salts contain other minerals, such as phosphorus, and are often harmful.
They are dangerous because they provoke chronic and painful swelling,
gumming up arteries and organs, with crippling or fatal results.
Calcification is often in arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes. Many
arthritis sufferers who have calcium deposits go on to develop heart
disease, but until recently the link has never been understood. Nor has
the one between osteoporosis--loss of bone calcium--and the seemingly
contrary growth of calcium deposits elsewhere as the illness progresses.
Although calcification occurs more frequently as we age, being young
is no defense: it is often in sport injuries, and sidelines many athletes.
Bursitis and tendonitis can contain calcium deposits. Kidney stones are
usually calcified at the center.
More than half a trillion dollars are spent annually to treat calcification-related
diseases. So why haven't more stories explained it until now? Because
until now, no one knew where it came from or how to get rid of it.
For example, look for the term "calcification" at the National Library
of Medicine's PubMed website and you'll find about 23,000 articles about
the condition, but few if any claim positive scientific evidence of a
cause.
One of the barriers to finding a cause or treatment for calcification
is that some experts have long claimed it is part of the body's healing
process. Because of this widespread idea, doctors have often not considered
calcification to be at the root of the problem. They also often don't
associate calcification with the trademark inflammation that accompanies
it.
Yet up-to-date medical manuals such as the authoritative Merck Manual
of Diagnosis -- a bible found in many doctors' offices -- describe calcium
phosphate crystals that make up calcification as "aggressive" and provoking
chronic inflammation as well as attacking joints.
Now, the discovery of a tiny particle has shown a link between calcification
and inflammation. Scientists who now work with the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) discovered something so small that it
challenges the definition of life. It made headlines when Mayo Clinic
researchers found it in heart disease, while others discovered how to
test for and treat it.
Basically, the scientists found that the particle generates a calcium
phosphate shell while in the blood, and attacks human tissue. This provokes
an immune reaction that includes chronic inflammation.
And in October, the Journal Pathophysiology published clinical trial
results suggesting that when the particle is targeted with treatment,
calcification seems to be reversible. [Study title: Maniscalco et al, "Calcification
in Coronary Artery Disease can be Reversed by Long-Term EDTA-tetracycline
chemotherapy," Pathophysiology 11 (2004) 95-101.]
The study also demonstrated reversal of most of the clinical symptoms
of atherosclerosis, including coronary artery calcification, in a majority
of patients who participated in the trial.
The authors of the study emphasize that the results are just preliminary,
but nonetheless the treatment that they used is available now as a combination
of an over-the-counter nutraceutical and a prescription of generic antibiotics.
The problem with the tiny discovered particle that seems to be generating
calcification is that no one knows exactly what it is. Its DNA remains
a mystery because much of can't be isolated using standard tests. So
right now, scientists from NASA and a dozen or so international institutes
are using nanotechnology methods to try and decipher its secrets.

Reducing the Risk of Breast Cancer
We hear it all the time…lose weight for your health.
Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their
physical well-being and ultimately their life expectancy.
In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured
a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially
among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to
longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher
BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5'10" weighing 288 pounds
with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life
as a result of obesity.Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of "Your
Personal Guide to Wellness" notes that while this study referenced extreme
levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed
countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less
than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there
are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.
Calcification can sometimes be a disease on its own, but is more frequently found in other illnesses. Calcium deposits are in breast and ovarian cancer. Breast implant patients occasionally require surgery to remove calcium deposits that develop around the implant. The deposits show up as spots on mammograms and can be mistaken for cancer.
Just how does obesity shorten our lifespan? The answer to this question
is complex, yet there is a clear link between obesity and the development
of cancer. An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute
involving 750,000 people showed that obesity significantly increased
the risk of cancer developing in the following organs: breast, colon,
ovaries, uterus, pancreas, kidneys and gallbladder.
Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research
for the American Cancer Society (ACS) says one reason obesity may raise
cancer risk is because fat cells produce a form of estrogen called estradiol
that promotes rapid division of cells, increasing chances of a random
genetic error while cells are replicating, which can lead to cancer.
In addition, fat centered around the abdomen may increase insulin and
insulin-like growth factors in the blood, which may increase cancer risk.
"Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk
of breast cancer," notes Thun, "and obese men have a 40% higher relative
risk of colon cancer…. Gallbladder and endometrial cancer risks
are five times higher for obese individuals".There is evidence that cancer
rates in developed countries are increasing at 5 to 15 times faster than
developing countries. A major contributor to this alarming reality has
proven to be diet. In populations where the diet consists mostly of fresh
fruit and vegetables and whole grains - in contrast to the typical Western
diet of fatty meats, refined flours, oils and sugars - the risk of cancer
is much lower.
The interaction of diet and the development of cancer is an active field
of research and Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of "What Color
is Your Diet", says "It appears that diet has its most significant effects
after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the
growth of that cancer". At the risk of oversimplifying a complex set
of interactions, the typical Western diet that leads to obesity may actually
act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells.It is never too late to improve
your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving
lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate
improvement to your health and vitality.
1. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has
become health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a
BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%)
qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In 1980, just
15% of Americans were considered obese. You can check your BMI at the
website below.
2. Match your diet to your body's requirements. If you
eat and drink more calories than your body requires you will put on weight.
Learn to control calories and portion sizes, make recipes leaner, and
eat infrequently from fast food restaurants. Also learn how to snack
with healthful choices.
3. Color your diet with a large variety of colorful, cancer-fighting
fruit and vegetables. There are seven different color ranges
of both fruit and vegetables and by choosing between 5 to 9 daily serves
from a wide range of fruit and vegetables, we are extending our consumption
of cancer (and other disease) fighting nutrients.
4. Eat lean protein with every meal. Protein provides
a powerful signal to the brain providing a longer sense of fullness.
The right source of protein is essential to controlling your hunger with
fewer calories and necessary to maintain your lean muscle mass. Choices
of protein should be flavored soy shakes with fruit; the white meat of
chicken and turkey, seafood such as shrimps, prawns scallops and lobster
and ocean fish or vegetarians may prefer soy based meat substitutes.
5. Rev up your metabolism with activity. If you want
to enjoy a lifetime of well-being, exercise is a key ingredient. Colleen
Doyle, MS, RD, director of nutrition and physical activity for the American
Cancer Society (ACS), says adults should do something for 30 minutes
each day that takes as much effort as a brisk walk. Children should be
active for an hour each day. We are more likely to develop habits around
things we enjoy, so seek activities which you enjoy doing. It is also
helpful to build physical activity into your daily routine: use the stairs
instead of the escalator or lift at work, park your car in the parking
bay furthest from the super marketing and don't use the remote control
to change TV channels.
6. Get support to ensure you develop a healthful eating plan
and reach your goal weight. Whilst a small percentage of people
possess the discipline to lose weight, many obese people have developed
strong thoughts and habits concerning the food they eat. In order to
establish new habits, most people respond well to some form of consistent
encouragement and coaching. A study, "Effects of Internet Behavioral
Counseling on Weight Loss in Adults at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes" shows
that participants who had the support of weight loss coaching lost more
weight than those who didn't. The study concluded that the support of
a weight loss coach can significantly improve weight loss results.
Being overweight or obese has been identified next to smoking, as the
most preventable major risk to developing cancer. Even small weight losses
have been shown to have beneficial health effects. So it's never to late
to start and you can never be too young or too old to be concerned about
your health and do something about achieving a more healthy weight.

sell snake oil would make... but SURPRISE ... these statements are coming
from the mainstream ... and the results are from simple natural multi-vitamins
NOT pharmaceutical drugs!
But that is not all! It is now being said that if everyone over 65 took
a multi every day that the US taxpayer would save $1.6 billion over 5
years in Medicare costs due to a reduced incidence of coronary artery
disease and other diseases triggered by weak immune systems.
These figures do NOT factor in the financial savings brought about by
the reduction of colorectal cancer, diabetes, prostate cancer and a whole
host of other ailments that can likely be avoided through proper nutritional
supplementation. If these were factored in then the savings would be
MUCH greater. OK...
who is saying these things?
Earlier this month there was a conference in Washington DC entitled "Multivitamins
and Public Health: Exploring the Evidence." Presented at this conference
were the results of a study just completed by the Lewin Group (a health
care consulting firm). It was funded by Wyeth Consumer Healthcare which
is part of Wyeth Pharmaceutical Group.
He does, however, give you plenty of information on how to supplement your fight against cancer. Flaxseed oil is part of that advice. Fighting cancer can be a tough battle to win. I have met a few people who believe they have beaten their cancer through a powerful system called Falun Dafa.
This is what the researchers did:
They analyzed more than 125 clinical studies plus scientific literature
to determine whether or not multivitamins gave any health benefits and
if so, whether these benefits translated into savings in healthcare bills
for people 65 years of age or older.
The director of the Lewin Group, Allen Dobson, PhD put the study results
into perspective when he said, "finding any cost savings for preventative
measures is unusual and finding cost savings of this magnitude ($1.6B)
is very rare."
It is a refreshing turn around for someone associated with 'mainstream'
medicine to actually concede that preventive measures actually do work.
As you have probably noticed over the last couple of years there have
been many misleading statements from spokespeople in the 'mainstream'
medical field doing their best to discourage people from the use of natural
preventive remedies.
More positive 'mainstream' comments...
The positive 'mainstream' comment doesn't end with this study! During
the same week that the conference in Washington was held the results
of another study was published in the American Journal of Epidermiology
which is a 'mainstream' publication. This was a study carried out by
Harvard during the last twenty years.
The results will no doubt annoy many opponents of natural preventive
medicines but the facts speak for themselves. Here are the highlights:
* The study involved approximately 145,000 middle aged or elderly adults.
* In 1982 these adults were surveyed regarding their multi-vitamin use.
* Their use was reassessed 10 years later in 1992.
* They were then followed up again over the next five years.
* During that period
797 of the participants developed colorectal cancer.
What the researchers found is that after adjusting for 'health conscious'
behaviors those participants that had regularly used multi vitamins since
the start of the study (at least 10 years) had a 30% decreased risk of
developing colon/rectal cancer.
They also found that those people who had only recently started taking
supplements had no protection in the short term and that the benefits
only manifested themselves over the long term. This is an important point
to remember. Start early not later. Increasing your immunity from cancer
is a steady building up process over the long term.
This study ties in with another well known study in which selenium (in
the correct form) was found to reduce the incidence of all cancers by
37% and overall mortality from cancer by 50%.
These two studies only deal with vitamins and one mineral. They do not
include the many reputable studies that have clearly established antioxidants
on their own also play a major role in cancer prevention. Unfortunately
most people never get to hear about most of these studies. If they did
and they acted upon it a lot of pain and suffering could be avoided.
Now here is something to think about!
If the risk of cardiovascular disease and other diseases brought on by
poor immunity can be reduced significantly by a simple multi vitamin,
and further, that the risk of colon/rectal cancer can be also reduced
by 30% through multi-vitamins, and in addition, if the risk of other
cancers can be reduced by 37% by just one mineral,selenium.
What would happen to your overall risk profile if you did the following?
* You took all the key nutrients proven in clinical studies to be effective
for cardiovascular health
* Digestive health
* Hormonal health
* Key organ health including the brain
* And included selected enzymes and immunity enhancing herbal extracts
* Used the latest scientific knowledge
of synergy and metabolic pathways to magnify the effects of the individual
substances and you put them all into a capsule or tablet?
I know the answer because we have done just this when we produced Total
