How Cancer Changed My Life and How It Can Change Yours

“Caring about others, running the risk of feeling, and leaving an impact on people, brings happiness.” Rabbi Harold Kushner

As a cancer survivor, and in speaking to audiences worldwide, people often ask me, “How did you get into the speaking business? And, “Tell me about your cancer.” The answer is simple. On May 2, 1991, I experienced a wake-up call that would forever change my life. I was diagnosed with stage zero colon cancer. And it doesn't run in my family. The good news is that through life-altering experiences such as these, we’re often forced to find our passion and fulfill our fate. Here’s my story as a cancer survivor, what it taught me and what you can learn from it.

Develop Prostate Cancer

Two days later, I was sitting in front of the doctor when he said to me, “Unfortunately, Colleen, you’ve got colon cancer.”

My life in Redondo Beach, California in 1991 was wonderful. Living in an ocean view town home blocks from the beach, and with a job I enjoyed, there was much reason to feel grateful. In addition, my many friends and I had just celebrated my 31st birthday in late March of that same year. One month later we were all skiing at Mammoth Mountain in California. Having just completed my final ski run of the day, I was feeling happy, alive and energized. It was nearing sunset. Clouds in pink, purple and orange hues filled the sky. The scent of the green pine trees and crisp mountain air was exhilarating.

My whole body went numb. I told him that since I was handling it well and wasn’t in tears, I must be in shock. He winced with empathy, and said, “I think you are.” The good news is my colon cancer was stage zero so I never had any chemo or radiation. I was one of the lucky ones.

Having said that, I recently spoke for the 4th annual dinner of a colon cancer survivors’ group and was shocked at how many patients were under the age of 40. They were not the relatives of cancer patients but the actual patients themselves. At that dinner, I asked both the patients and their families to write down what they had learned from a colon cancer diagnosis. Here are some of the things they shared:

“My wife is a cancer survivor, and I am now deeply aware of how the birds sing and the flowers bloom.”

“I have become closer to God. I use my experience to talk to youth. My skies are bluer and my flowers more colorful. I see more to life than others. I have better relationships with others I meet.”

“Life is too special and sometimes too short to worry about the small stuff. We need to have a passion for life. Working in oncology and having a cancer survivor mother to share my life with is truly a blessing! This disease is preventable! Get screened and get treatment if necessary!”

“I got a colonoscopy and had polyps in my late 20’s. I now know that I am not indestructible.”“After being diagnosed with colon cancer at age 38, I learned to put myself, my husband and my children ahead of any other obligations. It made me look for God’s purpose in my life.”“As the wife of a cancer survivor I find that my sense of what life is all about has changed. My treatment of others (my husband, children, and other people in my life) has become more loving.”“I appreciate life much more and am thankful for each day. I look forward to what life has in store for me."“Increased awareness of life’s potential to change suddenly. I’m reconnected with family members not seen for a long time. As a colon cancer survivor, it caused my family members to all get a colonoscopy.” ”I am a cancer survivor. I am now so very very happy and singing praises and helping others. Smile, smile, smile!"

As a cancer survivor, I can tell you that the things that we think are so pressing and urgent often aren’t. It’s about family, friends, appreciating nature, taking risks and helping others. I hope you will not have to experience a wake-up call in order to find your passion and fulfill your fate. Learn from the experiences of others. March is colon cancer awareness month. Please get screened. Don’t die of embarrassment. It could save your life.

Could Virexx Medical's 'Linked Recognition' Research Lead To A Cancer Vaccine?

While preparing a lecture in biochemistry and virology for his graduate students at the University of Alberta in the early 1980s, Dr. Lorne Tyrrell ran across a study just published in the medical journal, Cell. The research by William Mason and Jesse Summers, entitled "Replication of Hepatitis B," discussed their study of the hepatitis B virus in infected duck liver.

After studying their duck model theory, Tyrrell speculated if the hepatitis B virus (HBV) might be susceptible to antiviral agents, and consulted with a colleague, who specialized in nucleoside chemistry. Both medical professors became excited about the possibility of inhibiting the HBV virus with nucleoside analogues. Thus began the infectious disease specialist's first leg of a journey, which led to the use of lamivudine as a therapy for chronic HBV infections.

More than 350 million people across the world, especially in Asia, now had new hope, some for their lifelong infections contracted vertically at birth from their mothers. In 2003, the Center for Disease Control estimated 73,000 Americans were infected with HBV, and about 5,000 die each year from sickness caused by HBV. It is reportedly 100 times more contagious than the AIDS virus. Many in North America, who had been infected with the virus from sexual transmission or intravenous drug use, were offered a potentially life-saving therapy.

Despite the awards and recognition, questions remained for Dr. Tyrrell about the shortcomings of lamivudine. He was troubled that some viruses would develop resistance to the compound. "I was disappointed the sustained viral response was not complete," Tyrrell told us. In April 2003, the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy published a study in Japan showing, "long-term (lamivudine) therapy is associated with increased emergence of lamivudine-resistant strains of HBV." Researchers concluded in this study, "The therapeutic challenge to effectively treat chronic HBV infection continues."

Having screened lamivudine for use in Hepatitis B at Glaxo's research lab at the University of Alberta, Dr. Tyrrell was able to observe the immune response of various HBV patients. "What really got me interested in doing more work in this area was that we noticed patients, who have an immune response to the virus and take lamivudine, will have a better sustained response rate," Tyrrell explained. "A patient with elevated liver transaminases taking lamivudine had a higher probability of a sustained viral response," Tyrrell said with excitement in his voice. "In a patient with normal liver enzymes, who gets lamivudine, the virus will go down, but as soon as you stop the therapy, the virus comes right back up." He told us the sustained viral response is only about two to three percent. Only about 30 percent remain free of the virus, about one year after patients have stopped taking lamivudine.

"How do you break tolerance?" Tyrrell asked himself, hoping to develop a way to stimulate an immune response. All of the patients, he had observed, seemed to be tolerant of the hepatitis B virus. He pondered the dilemma, "Was there some way to break tolerance to hepatitis B by stimulating the immune response?" Tyrrell studied what others were attempting and wasn't satisfied with the approaches others were taking to stimulate immune response. His ViRexx Medical research team brainstormed about different ways to target the antigen into the dendritic cells.

"That's where we came in with the Chimigen™ technology," Tyrrell said. "The dendritic cells have receptors on their surface that will bind the Fc portion of an antibody." He pointed out a key feature of the Chimigen™ platform, "We used the Fc portion of a murine (mouse) antibody to hook onto our hepatitis B antigens. This would direct the viral antigens into dendritic cells in vivo." Because the dendritic cells are the sentries of the immune system, they guard what comes in. Recognizing a 'foreign situation' in the murine antibody, it treats the whole molecule including the virus antigen as foreign.

Dr. Rajan George, ViRexx Medical's vice president of research and development, told us, "The dendritic cells chop up this protein into small pieces called peptides, also known as epitopes. The dendritic cells have a system where they put the T-cell epitope on another protein, MHC Class I, and bring it to the surface of the dendritic cell. They are presented as a complex on the surface of the dendritic cell to attract the T-cells." When the T-cells arrive to inspect the foreign entity, the cytotoxic T-cells are activated. Then, they begin attacking and killing the virus-infected cells.

Research at Tokyo's Cancer Institute Hospital, published in 1987 in Nippon Sanka Fujinka Gakkai Zasshi, suggested a feasibility of linked recognition of a virus antigen as a helper in tumor immunity with a target antigen. In the case of ViRexx Medical, Tyrrell's team has created a new molecule, called "chimigen." The term is shorthand for a chimeric antigen, meaning it is an antigen created from two different sources, part virus and part murine monoclonal antibody.

Dr. Tyrrell's work at ViRexx Medical with Dr. George suggested the linked-recognition theory might be the key to breaking tolerance. Dr. George emphasized, "The new 'chimigen' stimulates an immune response to the antigen as well as the viral antigen. This is very important because the virus antigen was previously being ignored." That brings us back to why lamivudine had limited success. The immune systems of some HBV carriers failed to recognize the viral infection as a threat to the body. Tyrell's ViRexx Medical research team hopes the body's immune system sees the threat, thus stimulating the immune system, and breaking tolerance. It appears Dr. Tyrell may soon find out whether or not the questions he asked will bring the answers he hoped for.

Skin Cancer - Do You Visit Tanning Salons?

One of the main causes of skin cancer is exposure to harmful sunrays. If you thought that getting tanned at tanning salons was safer than the sun, please think again before visiting any salon again. Tanning beds and sunlamps are as dangerous as the sunrays.

Most of the bulbs used in the salons emit both UVA and UVB radiations that are also found in the sunlight and are responsible for both Melanoma and Nonmelonoma types of cancers. Exposure to tanning bulbs also reduces our bodys ability to repair the damaged DNA, which is caused by UV radiation.

Licensed in 1998, lamivudine is now used in 120 countries as a standard therapy for chronic HBV carriers. The compound is also used in combination with other drugs, such as protease inhibitors, for HIV therapy. Development rights were licensed to Glaxo Wellcome in 1990, which is now sold under the brand name Epivir®. For his pioneering efforts in developing the antiviral agent, Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the gold medal by the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver in 2000. In 2005, he won the prestigious EnCana Principal Award for his development of the first effective oral medication for Hepatitis B.

Tanning not only may cause cancers as the last damage but also prematurely ages the skin. How many of us realize that tanning is bodys response to damage to the skin. every time, you get tanned , you accumulate skin damage. There is no such thing as safe tanning. Unfortunately the cosmetic trends are pushing more women to tanning salons. More people are inviting cancer for the sake of the tanned look. Melanoma can kill if not diagnosed earlier. Unfortunately the young population is not changing its behavior about getting tanned. as they accumulate skin damage over the years, their getting affected by skin cancer at later stage of their life is increasing.

If you are one of those who believe that a tan is good and that tanning beds or sun lamps are safe, please stop using them. You are putting your life to a very painful death. Treating Cervical Cancers

Cervical cancer, to some people, might not be a very common type of cancer, but unfortunately, it is no less dangerous. This type of cancer ranks second only after breast cancer in the number of deaths recorded globally, annually in women between the ages of 35 and 55. Though its prevalence varies from country to country, depending on, sexual activity; although this has not been medically proved, an estimated 300,000 women have different stages of cervical cancer globally.

The cause of cervical cancer is much less complicated when compared to breast cancer and by undergoing regular Pap smear screening, it is often easy to detect the cancer in its very early stages, when treatment will be more effective and less invasive. The most common cause of cervical cancer has been shown to be the human Papilloma virus (HPV) which is transmitted through sexual intercourse. This virus could induce lesions in the cells of the cervix that may progress into cancer. However, Pap smear screening can efficiently detect the earliest signs of pre-cancer changes in these cells.

Unfortunately, despite the simplicity of this cancer type, most women do not notice it until the later stages when the cancer has spread throughout the cervix and at times, to nearby organs. This could be due to the fact that the cancerous changes in the cervical cells span a long period of time and often without symptoms. While this is good on one hand, because it allows you to treat effectively the condition at the pre-cancerous stages, it is also bad, on the other hand, because it stays in the body over a very long period of time, without a form of sign/warning, wreaking havoc on the cells of the cervix and making treatment very difficult when it is finally discovered.

So, prevention and early detection very important with cervical cancer.

Some medical reports say there is now a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine is said to come in three shots and when taken in series, it is believed to be totally capable of preventing cervical cancer by raising the body's immunity against the HPV. However, the vaccine must be taken before girls become sexually active for it to work optimally. You and I know that the best form of treatment is prevention, if you have daughters, sisters or friends that are still under sexual age, helping them get this vaccine would be the best help you can render to them. Ask your medical practitioners for more information about the vaccine.

In the early stages of development cervical cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy or radiation or sometimes, a combination of the two. Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs that enter the bloodstream. These contain chemical substances that can locate and destroy cancerous cells, without harming the normal cells of the body. Though these drugs come with some adverse effects, but the body can get over these after treatment has been completed. Radiation involves the use of powerful electromagnetic waves to shrink the tumor, killing the cancerous cells in the process. During the process, other organs of the body are protected from the radiation.

However, in advanced stages of cervical cancer, surgery is usually the only alternative. Depending on how far the cancer has spread, treatment may require partial removal of the cervix and uterus, known as partial hysterectomy. This spare the ovaries and other parts of the female genitalia. If the spread of the cancer has reached several parts of the cervix and uterus, radical trachelectomy might be the treatment alternative. This involves removal of the cervix and the lower part of the uterus with several lymph nodes in the pelvis that might have been infected. This treatment option is intended to preserve fertility.

However, in the worst cases of cervical cancer where the cancer has spread outside the uterus, radical hysterectomy is the only option. This involves removing the cervix and uterus completely, the ovaries, part of the vagina and lymph nodes in the region. This is a very radical treatment and often the last alternative when the cancer has got out of hand. Because of the hormonal value of the ovaries, removal of the ovaries often has serious health implications for the woman. Paying attention to your body, especially the cervix, regular Pap smear testing and a healthy lifestyle is all you need to ensure that you never suffer such a consequence.

How Nutrition is linked with Cancer Prevention

For many years it was assumed that what you ate each day had little or nothing to do with helping in the prevention of many of our deadliest cancers. However, recent research has proven that nutrition does indeed play a major role in the prevention and treatment of many types of cancer. There are certain vitamins and minerals that are believed to enhance and spread malignancies through the bodies system, and this is needed to help prevent cancer. There are also vitamins and minerals that help to prevent the growth of tumors. The National Cancer Institute has reported that one third of all cancer is diet related. They have also gone on to say that making changes in the diet can help to prevent most of the cancer that is related to nutrition.

Research has shown that diets that include fruits and vegetables eaten on a daily bases, according to the recommended daily allowance, give a reduced risk of the majority of the deadliest cancers. For a diet to provide a reduced risk, certain vitamins and minerals must be included. This means that foods that are rich in bioflavonoids, fiber, and vitamins A, C, and E must be consumed regularly. These all seem to help to slow, stop, and even reverse the process that leads to cancer.

Now, everyone knows that cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer, particularly cancer of the lungs. But many of the cancers caused by smoking are related to a severe lack of vitamin C. Cigarette smoking depletes vitamin C in the body very quickly. It is highly recommended that smokers follow a diet with more fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts of vitamin C to replenish the bodies depleted supply.

Most cancer patients are referred to a registered dietitian to help promote a diet that will help aid in the bodies healing and recovery process. In the final stages of cancer, most patients do not feel like eating. In the past, many of these patients were force fed. However, recent research has shown that when a patient does not feel like eating, it is the body's way of trying to starve the cancer. During the time that the body is trying to starve the cancer, doctors will go into action and bombard the cancer with treatments. When the cancer is destroyed, the patient's appetite will return back to normal and the body's recovery can take place.

While we have learned how certain nutrients included in the diet can help prevent, slow down and even reverse many forms of cancer, there are numerous forms of cancer most of which are very deadly and many people do not survive the ordeal. If you are ever one of the unfortunate ones that acquire one of these deadly cancers, or someone you know does, always remember that proper nutrition will help through the process. Aside from your doctor and specialist, it will pay you ten fold to seek out the aid of a qualified registered dietitian who can put together a nutrition plan for you that will help you fight the cancer every step of the way. Your doctor may even refer you to a dietitian as part of your treatment.

Cancer Lies Impoverish You Before You Die (part 2)

Cancer Lies

Lie 1: Conventional medicine can cure your cancer.

Lie 2: It is criminal the way alternative medicine holds out false hope and diverts patients away from reliable medical treatment.

Lie 3: We put the patient's interests first.

You'll notice that lie 2 refers back to lie 1. Conventional medicine has three weapons against cancer.

Surgery Chemotherapy Radiation therapy

Surgery is successful if the cancer is removed before it has spread. So it could be described as a cure for cancer. Radiation therapy is based on the theory that your body is better at fighting the damage done by radiation therapy than the cancer is. So if you almost kill the body there is hope that you will completely kill the cancer. Chemotherapy is based on the hope that healthy tissue will be better at fighting the poisons administered. All chemotherapy drugs use the patient as a guinea pig, because the drug companies argue that it would be cruel to do placebo controlled tests on patients who thought that they were getting medicine and were getting a sugar pill.

My theory about chemotherapy tests

When alternative medicine has 40% success the drug companies claim that it is the placebo effect. Now the placebo effect should work just as well for conventional medicine as for alternative medicine so if we subtract 40% from the success rate of chemotherapy, we will have the true success rate. That means that when chemotherapy has a 1.5% success rate the figures would work out like this. Out of 200 patients 80 are cured by the placebo effect (40%), then 77 of these survivors are killed by the chemotherapy leaving 3 chemotherapy "cures" (1.5%) If these are the figures expected by the drug companies, it's not surprising that they refuse to do placebo controlled tests.

Money the only consideration

In 1983, Ezekiel J. Emanuel, M.D. (an oncologist and bioethicist), presented the results of a study that examined the medical records of almost 8,000 cancer patients. Dr. Emanuel found that in cases where chemotherapy was administered in the final six months of life, ONE-THIRD of the patients suffered from cancers that are known to be unresponsive to chemotherapy!

According to Gordon Zubrod, M.D., (a researcher for the National Cancer Institute), chemotherapy is considered to be highly effective only in these cancers:

Burkitt's lymphoma Choriocarcinoma Acute lymphocytic leukemia Hodgkin's disease Lymphoscarcoma Embryonal testicular cancer Wilms' Tumor Ewing's sarcoma Rhabdomyosarcoma Retinoblastoma These cancers affect very few people so it isn't profitable to restrict chemotherapy only to patients that will benefit from it. So if you know of someone who died of pneumonia after being given chemotherapy for breast cancer you will know that she was killed for profit. Because breast cancer is not on the list.

Though HPV is recognized as the reason behind most cases of cervical cancer, there are other factors that play important roles in the cause and progression of cervical cancer, these include; numerous sex partners over a period of time; this increases the chance of HPV infection, the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases, weak immune system, which reduces the ability of the body to fight the virus, early sexual activity, as non-matured cells of the cervix are more likely to succumb to viral infection, and sometimes, cigarette smoking, though this has not been conclusively established. It is important to point out that the body's immune system is usually capable of suppressing the viral activity of HPV, thus cervical cancer only results in women whose immune system could not sufficiently control the virus.

What happened to "We put the patient first."?

If the cancer industry put patients first, patients wouldn't be given chemotherapy that wouldn't work. If cancer patients came first, the industry wouldn't suppress successful competitors.

1. A Canadian nurse invented an effective brew from four weeds. The cancer industry suppressed all sales of the weeds, and of the finished brew.

2. The CSIRO (a government research organisation) in Australia discovered a native plant that cured skin cancer. So the cancer industry managed to get it made "on prescription only", and it is never prescribed.

3. Vitamin B17 was shown to fight cancer. So a concerted campaign was conducted to convince everyone that it would kill them. The campaign took advantage of the fact that most people wouldn't know that the staple diet in parts of Africa is millet, which is rich in B17.

Everyone is scared of cyanide, so it was emphasized that B17 contains cyanide - so does cobalamine, another vitamin that we need.

It looks as if the second lie is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. It should be the victims of chemotherapy who are complaining about the way conventional medicine holds out false hope and diverts patients away from reliable medical treatment. One cancer specialist resigned from his work because he could no longer live with his conscience. He said that it was usual to get half a million dollars out of each patient before they died.

Prevention Although the record of conventional medicine for curing cancer is deplorable, it is non existent when it comes to preventing cancer. The only preventive treatment that I ever heard of was the suggestion that all women should have their breasts removed to prevent breast cancer. Alternative medicine excels at prevention. Many of the treatments are every day foods for some cultures and others are readily available. Have you heard of any of these powerful cancer fighters? Garlic Onions Broccoli Tomatoes Curry Selenium Curry Apricot Kernels That's not an exhaustive list but this page is about health lies, not about proper treatment.

You haven't got cancer (yet) so why should you care? Wouldn't it be better to avoid getting cancer in the first place? Read more about these murderous lies about healthy diets and other health concerns.

The author's father died of cancer because nobody told him how to avoid it. The only interest that the cancer industry has in you is in your money. That's not all. There are a few good doctors around, but most of them are only interested in your money, and if that involves making you sicker...that's fine. Read the series of ten articles about healthy diets lies exposed here.

Cervical Cancer - Detect It Early

Cervical cancer ranks high on the list of common cancers that plague women worldwide; it comes second after breast cancer in prevalence. More than 300,000 women die of cervical cancer every year, worldwide, while in the United States alone, 13,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed every year, with about 4,000 deaths. Most cases of cervical cancer are reported in women between 40 and 55years of age, though it is not unusual for women in their late thirties to be infected.

However, unlike breast and other forms of cancer, the cause and factors inducing cervical cancer is well established, except in very limited number of cases. The culprit in most cases of cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted virus known as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This virus can remain in the female genitalia for a very long time, wreaking havoc on the cells of the cervix over a long period of time. It is reported that not all cases of HPV infections lead to cervical cancer, however what is clear is that the virus is capable of inducing abnormal changes in the cervical cells. Some of these abnormal changes in the cells result in what is medically known as 'high grade lesions', which, sometimes may progress into cervical cancer.

Pap smears are the only established method for cervical cancer screening. This test involves brushing cells off the surface of the cervix and examining the cells under a microscope for the presence of cancerous or precancerous changes or lesions. Presently, Pap smear is a routine test for women in most developed countries and this has really helped to reduce the number of deaths that are recorded due to cervical cancer. However, some critics have argued that the Pap smear test is not always completely accurate. It is advisable to carry out the test in at least two laboratories, seek at least two professional opinions and then compare, especially if you observe early symptoms of cervical cancer or you believe you are perfectly alright but the test result shows otherwise.

Though there are no clear cut symptoms of cervical cancer, as it often progress without warning, the presence of the following symptoms or signs might be an indication of the presence of cervical cancer; vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse or pain during intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, unusual bleeding between menstrual periods or abnormally heavy bleeding during menstrual periods, increased urine frequency or pelvic pain. Again, these symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have cervical cancer, but they are good reasons for you to go see your doctor.
