In December 1999, my husband and I were walking home from a game of lawn bowls when I became aware of his shortness of breath. I was surprised and concerned when he told me that he had experienced this on several occasions. Believing this to be due to chest a infection, I made a doctor's appointment for him the next day. Chest X-rays revealed fluid on the lungs, over two litres of which was drained, giving Brian immediate relief, but it was a tense wait for the pathology results. Through the Internet I had become aware of several conditions which may have been responsible for fluid on the lung; these included asbestos- related diseases. Brian had lived in Wittenoom as a child and I was afraid of his diagnosis.

 

Undoubtedly, were mortally wounded. We suffered shock, disbelief, anger, helplessness and utter despair; in fact all the symptoms of grief one feels when a loved one has actually died. Once again we found ourselves with no control over our lives. This time however, there was no light at the end of the tunnel. Our journey through terminal illness had begun. Throughout the course of our married life my deep love for Brian and my determination to resolve difficulties had seen us through many trials. I found it hard to believe that nothing could be done to save his life and begun surfing the Internet for information regarding mesothelioma, all the time praying for a miracle, hoping against hope to find a doctor who had successfully operated on or cured someone of it. It was a sad realization to discover that for Brian there were no miracles; however, I learned a lot and it helped me to accept that he was dying. With my acceptance came a fierce determination to ease his burden.

 

I continued to seek information regarding mesothelioma and the pain and symptoms Brian would experience, due to the progression of his disease. In this way, I came to understand the importance of pain management and symptom control and realized that although I could not stop Brian from dying - I could help him to live. My acquired knowledge regarding pain and symptom management enabled me to communicate with Brian and to understand the type of pain he was experiencing and the intensity of that pain. I was then able to work hand in hand with his doctors, to bring his pain and symptoms under control. As my efforts resulted in his improved quality of life, I lost my sense of helplessness and gained strength.

Together, we achieved for Brian, a quality of life few thought possible, considering the nature of his disease. Testament to this, Brian survived for 2 years despite his prognosis of 3 to 9 months. Remained active and alert, drove his car for eighteen months after diagnosis and was not bed bound until three short days prior to his death.

Brian passed away on the 24th December 2001, he was 54 years old. I have written a book called "Lean on Me" Cancer through a Carer's Eyes, in the hope of helping others. My book includes; insight and discussion on: Pain Management, Symptom Control, Chemotherapy, Palliative Care, Quality of Life and the benefit of dying at home. Featured also are excerpts and poems from my personal diary which portray the roller coaster of my emotions as I cared for my terminally ill husband.

African American Women Need Earlier Screening for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women, ages 40-55, and African American women under the age of 45 are more likely to develop breast cancer than any other group of women in the US. Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer; every 12 minutes a woman dies from breast cancer and every year over 5000 African American women die from the disease. Although the cause of breast cancer is still unclear, researchers have determined that African American women tend to develop breast cancer at earlier ages than white women and they typically develop more aggressive types of tumors. Breast cancer often occurs in African American women under the age of 40 and as early as age 25.

 

Not wanting to worry him unnecessarily, I did not mention my fears to him. I prayed that he had pleurisy or pneumonia but the pathology results revealed that there were cancer cells present. When Brian finally received his diagnosis, my worst nightmare became reality. He had pleural mesothelioma, a terminal cancer of the lung caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust. We found it inconceivable that the disease was the result of Brian inhaling asbestos dust as a child and that it had lain dormant for forty-five years before become lethal. We were still reeling from the shock when, without preamble, the young doctor gave his prognosis. His exact words were, "Three to nine months, I reckon". That he could say this so unfeelingly amazed me. His total lack of compassion did not encourage even the small comfort of tears. I felt as if Brian and I had been shot and from that moment on we were waiting to drop.

In a study of breast cancer tumors in African American and white women, conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in 2004, researchers determined that breast tumors in young African American women were more likely to be fast-growing and more aggressive than those found in white women. "One of the important conclusions from this study is that even when you correct for stage -- that is, look at tumors of the same stage from white women and African American women -- tumors from the African-American women tend to have features characteristic of more aggressive and rapidly growing cancers," said Dr. Peggy Porter, lead author of the study. "If their tumors tend to grow more quickly, this may help to explain why their cancers are being diagnosed at later stages, which can lead to poorer outcomes."

Other studies have indicated that there are other possible reasons that African American women suffer high death rates from breast cancer: unemployment or underemployment, lack of health insurance, and lack of proper health education have all been cited as possible socioeconomic contributing factors. Overall, over 16 million women nationwide lack health insurance coverage and African American women are twice as likely to be uninsured as white women; over 30 percent of African American women live in poverty, and African American women are less likely to get mammograms.

Regardless of the socioeconomic factors that may contribute to the high death rate for African American women, medical professionals agree that early detection is paramount to surviving breast cancer and they've issued a number of recommendations to help African American women detect the disease in its earliest stages and improve their chances of survival.

Medical professionals recommend that African American women should:

•Practice monthly breast self-examinations (BSE) starting at age 20.

•Have a clinical breast examination, done by their physician, at least once a year.

•Have at least one mammogram completed, between the ages of 30 and 35.

•Have a mammogram completed every one to two years until age of 50.

•After 50, African American women should have an annual mammogram.

Breast cancer is a common disease among women of all races in America. This year, more than 200,000 women will develop the disease and 40,000 of them will die from it. Though African American women have less incidence of developing the disease, once diagnosed, their chances of survival are less than their white sisters. To increase their chances of surviving breast cancer, African American women need understand the risk that breast cancer poses to them and get screened for the disease earlier and more often.

Foods for fighting Cancer

 

Fruit is recognised as one of the most powerful foods for helping the body fight Cancer. Surprisingly, the homely prune is the fruit with the highest cancer-fighting powers. Previously it was believed that oranges and spinach were the best anti-cancer fruit and vegetables. The research team, from Tufts University in Boston, has released the results of its study on the Internet. Researchers measured fruits and vegetables for their oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) which is the capacity of foods to absorb free radicals.

 

Free radicals are destructive elements which occur in our bodies when healthy oxygen molecules are transformed into a highly-reactive, unstable form of oxygen. It is believed that they can lead to illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Anti-oxidants however, can neutralise these free radicals. The new study says that the anti-oxidant power of blood in people who eat prunes increases dramatically. Eating prunes would cause the anti-oxidant power in the blood to double or treble compared with eating other recognised cancer-fighting fruits.

Lifting the curse of the Big C. For years cancer has been seen as a death sentence and still brings out the fear of God in most of us today. We at Gen Cells Cures believe the tide is about to turn.

Cancer is a public health problem worldwide. It affects all people: The religious and the non-religious, The young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells that may affect almost any tissue of the body. Lung, colorectal and stomach cancer are among the five most common cancers in the world for both men and women. Among men, lung and stomach cancer are the most common cancers worldwide. For women, the most common cancers are breast and cervical cancer. More than 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. Cancer causes 6 million deaths every year. It's the "Big C" that scares me personally. When my own cells start eating me alive I will eat, sleep and dream of a biomedical cure for this deadly killer. Too many people learn just how precious life is at the moment they discover their own is ending. Although I don't believe I have cancer now. I'll admit it, I have the fear of an early death from an incurable disease and cancer is number one on my fear list. It's time to find "the cure"

A revolution is underway in cancer research and we hope to be at the forefront of the revolution while easing some of the fear of an early death from this deadly killer. Most cancers likes to get an early start with the average age to begin eating away at your healthy cells is about 55 years old, a particulary scary time for one Gerald Armstrong the owner of Gen Cells Cures because I am about 55 years old! And the risk of cancer increases significantly more as we grow older. Two-thirds of the cancer being diagnosed today occurs after 65 years of age.

Whatever, my company and I have packed up our michroscopes and left for higher ground. The US was once at the forefront of medicine and technology, research and innovation, cures and prevention.

 

Now we can do more in a basement lab working offshore than we could ever do working back home. I hope President Bush is embarrassed when we find the cure for Cancer in a small third world island! We are so close we can smell the cure. Again we have been asked to research a particular cancer, which we feel we can cure with the right team of scientists and the leadership and management provided by Gerald Armstrong. By focusing on one patient at a time with our private, personalized cancer research we will prevail. The problem is one in the same here at Gen Cells Cures as it is at many biotechs around the world. The Best Cancer Treatment Options (Article 6 of 6)

OK, enough of the philosophy! What, specifically, do I recommend you take to overcome your cancer and get "cancer-free." [We're not using the word "cure" simply because, as you recall, we're healthy with just a million or so cancer cells being produced every day by our cell division process.]

So, you have gotten a start on changing your lifestyle -- diet, exercise and supplements. You have started on a program to stimulate your immune system. What's next?
<u>YOUR CAMPAIGN</U>

You're battling cancer. Don't kid yourself. It is a formidable foe. You don't just continue your normal routine of a stressful workday, emotional stress, travel, etc. You must make cancer your "life" until you overcome it. But you can overcome it, as millions of others have. I know several hundred of them personally and I admire each and every one. This is like a military campaign. You have to have a good strategy, and then, you must employ the best weapons.

I can't recommend specific treatments for individuals. There are liability problems with doing that. I'm a "reporter," not a medical professional. What I can do is describe for you what I would do if I "had" cancer. What type of cancer? It would not matter. I would pursue the same course if it were colon, lung, prostate, or pancreatic cancer -- or even if it were leukemia or lymphoma or melanoma. There are some specific things I would take, in addition, if I had certain kinds of cancer. These are discussed in detail in my book. But, in general, this is a regimen I would follow regardless of the type or stage of the cancer.
<u>THE WEAPONS</U>

* Cottage cheese and flaxseed oil. What? Are you kidding? No, dead serious. You'll find the details and lots of testimonials in Chapter 5 of my book. I can't go into detail here, but rest assured that thousands of cancer patients patients have been healed with this substance first discovered by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a 100-year-old German cancer doctor who has been nominated for seven Nobel prizes for her work with the science of lipids (fats) in human cells. I eat this every day for prevention. It's food (substitutes for at least one meal a day) so costs nothing...Nada.

* Dr. Matthias Rath's formula. It is a mixture of Vitamin C, L-lysine and L-proline (two amino acids). Not impressed? Well, this formula happens to control metastasis (the spreading of cancer cells). * Cancer-fighting diet. Read Patrick Quillin's book "Beating Cancer With Nutrition" and use his recipes. This is the best cancer nutrition book I have read. It's available at amazon.com or in bookstores. Cost: $0.00. [Probably less than your current diet.]

* Dr. Williams' Daily Advantage. I mentioned this in one of the earlier articles. It is the best vitamin, mineral, amino acid, antioxidant, essential fatty acid, superfood combination I have found. Cost: $1.46 a day.

Total cost of this regimen, including the immune system stimulants I mentioned in the previous article is about $4.68 for the maintenance dose. For the first 6 weeks or so, the cost is about $8.88 per day. So for an initial cost of $266 a month and a continuing cost of $140 a month, you can be cancer-free. This is a lot less than most of us spend on a car payment.

<u>THE SWIMMING POOL ANALOGY</U>

Let me close this "short course" with a mental picture I'd like you to take away. In my life, I have owned two swimming pools. No more. Too much maintenance. But one thing you learn early on about swimming pools is that algae formation in the water must be controlled. Once it begins to take over, the sides of the pool become coated with this "green mung" and recovery becomes difficult, but not impossible.

Today's conventional cancer treatment doctors (oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, etc.) remind me of SCUBA divers diving into the pool (your body) and blasting away at the algae in an attempt to kill it off and stop its growth. If you've ever tried to overcome algae in a pool, you know the only way is to correct the chemical composition (alkalinity, chlorine level, etc.) of the water. At that point, the pool becomes sparklng and attractive again. The algae dies off and is disposed of with a vacuum.

The above regimen ("The Weapons") describes a way to bring the "chemistry" of your body back into sparkling, attractive health by correcting the normal balance of the pool's water (your body).
