From breast to colon to lung to stomach, it seems that every day there is someone else we know who has been diagnosed with the disease. While on the outside, our friends, family, and co workers all seem strong, on the inside, they are terrified, not knowing what the future will hold for them. These animals, coupled with cancer awareness wristbands can help even the toughest cancer patient make it through.

It is technically against the law to discriminate against the handicapped. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) extended this to the private sector. Cancer and other diseases fall under this law. If you have issues at your job due to the effects of your cancer treatment, your employer must make accommodations for you. But the truth is that many employers will find other ways to discriminate against workers who have had cancer, so be on your guard.

Lung Cancer Risks - When it comes to cancer prevention and treatment, your bodys first defense is your best. A type of white blood cell called Natural Killer cells, may hold the key to the growth and spread of cancers.

Breast Cancer - Insurance and Employment

In addition to the medical and emotional issues one must deal with after having breast cancer, some other issues breast cancer survivors must deal with are health insurance and employment discrimination. As much as people want to deny the problem, there is discrimination against people who have had cancer. Hard to believe, since having cancer can really make a person stronger and more focused, but it happens. So this article will discuss some issues and approaches to take to deal with discrimination not only with employment, but with insurance.

In terms of employment, everyone must make a decision to tell or not tell co-workers about having cancer.

It is very important NOT to let your insurance lapse after having cancer. Your current insurance company cannot drop your coverage after having a life threatening illness like cancer, but many insurance companies WILL NOT let someone who has had a life threatening illness start a policy with them or they will cover you, but NOT in the event of a recurrence. Changing insurance coverage through a job change will usually be ok, but you will need to check to make sure. Also, if you quit your job or leave for any reason, it's usually a good idea to continue your coverage through COBRA until you have a new job or coverage through other means. It can be expensive, but worth it in the event of any health problems. Also, it is harder to get other types of insurance coverage, like life and disability after having breast cancer.

It's a little trickier when you are trying to find a new job. Employers can be shy about hiring people who have had cancer. It's against the law, but it still happens. You have to decide if you want to be upfront about your illness or just cover it up. On one hand, you might want to work for a company that will be supportive of your situation. On the other hand, you might not want to risk losing the job and choose just not to mention it. In addition, if you need to take time off for appointments and other things, it might not go over well with them if they didn't know that when they hired you. It's a very personal decision, one in which you must carefully weigh all your options. If you can find some kind of career counseling center, they may be able to give you some type of advice or guidance.

Characterizing Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer occurs when cells within the walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system mutate and begin to multiply. This gland, called prostate, is located in front of the rectum and underneath the urinary bladder. It surrounds the tube, called urethra, which carries urine from the bladder and semen through the penis. The gland functions by helping in the production and storage of seminal fluid. The prostate gland has an average length of three centimeters and weighs about twenty grams. Different types of cells can be found in the prostate, but cancer occurring in this part of the male reproductive system almost always starts with the grandular cells. Cancers that start in the grandular cells are called adenocarcinoma and 99 percent of prostate cancers are classified as adenocarcinoma.

Some studies have claimed that the development of cancer in the prostate starts with the occurrence of a condition called prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN).

The peripheral zone of the prostate is where cancer usually develops. Although there are still no studies that can confirm that PIN is a cancer precursor, many doctors believe that this condition has a role in the development of cancer in the prostate.

PIN is a condition wherein changes in the microscopic appearance of prostate gland cells start to happen. These changes start to appear in men during their 20s and could continue to escalate as they grow older. In the initial stage of PIN, small clumps of cancer cells remain confined to normal prostate glands. Over time, though, they could multiply and spread to the surrounding prostate tissues and form a tumor. The tumor may grow and invade nearby organs and even metastasize to spread to other organs such as the bones and lymph nodes.

The specific cause of this condition has yet to be pinpointed by medical studies, but several factors have been associated with a man's risk of developing this condition such as age, genetics, race, lifestyle, diet and medications used. In terms of age, research figures have shown that the condition is not very common among men aged below 45. The chances of developing this condition, though, increase as a man ages. But since cancer in the prostate is slow to develop, some men who already have the condition might not show symptoms for years and might even die of other causes without the disease having affected them, particularly if this cancer is acquired during the latter stage of a man's life.

According to medical statistics, cancer of the prostate is the most common non-skin cancer in the United States. It has been projected that in 2006, 234,000 men will be diagnosed with cancer of the prostate in the United States alone and an estimated 27,000 men will die from the disease. Despite these seemingly scary figures, prostate cancer remains a much controllable condition compared with other types of cancer and the international medical community is continuing its efforts to improve methods of detecting the condition early to give men a better chance of managing it.

Colon Cancer Early Symptoms

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer or bowel cancer, is a cancer that develops in the colon or rectum. The cancer is most curable when detected before the development of the symptoms or during early symptoms. One of the important colon cancer early symptoms is rectal bleeding. But unfortunately, most people mistakenly consider the bleeding as hemorrhoids and avoid consulting a doctor.

Alternative Cancer Treatments

Bowel movements can result in bleeding, Even then, there may not be any major discharge of blood and bleeding will be occasional.

Dried blood in the stool indicates tumor in colon and normal blood is an indication of tumor in rectum. Blood in the stool can also be due to several other reasons. Constant loss of blood can lead to anemia. Instead of becoming a self-appointed doctor, it is better to have a proper screening done.

Most of the colon cancer early symptoms may go unnoticed as they do not cause severe discomfort or might be considered as other ailments. Narrow stools, for a prolonged period of time, are an indication of some sort of growth in the colon or rectum. The narrowing results as the waste material tries to navigate through the tumor. When there is a growth happening in the colon, it will be reflected in your bowel movement. The cancerous growth hampers the smooth movement of the bowels. This can result in constipation. In a prolonged situation of constipation, you should consult a doctor. Bloating and cramping resulting from constipation are the other symptoms.

Another colon cancer early symptom is nausea and vomiting without any reason. In fact, obstruction caused by tumor can trigger periodic episodes of nausea and vomiting. Flatulence and other disorders caused by gas can be due to the obstruction created by the cancerous growth. A tumor in the rectum causes a feeling of unfinished defecation. Persistent occurrence of such a feeling indicates the presence of a tumor which is mistaken by the body as stool.

Apart from the symptoms related to bowel movement, yet another early symptom of colon cancer is weight loss, which is not attributed to any particular reason like diet or exercise. Such a weight loss is a clear sign that the body is undergoing some serious changes. The tumor might be hampering with the capacity of the colon to absorb moisture from food residues. Weight loss will be followed by fatigue and constant tiredness. Most people are likely to ignore these colon cancer early symptoms as natural occurrences associated with the tough modern daily routine.

Colon cancer early symptoms are likely to be ignored by most of the people. When there is a constant disturbance in bowel movement, it is wise to take the advice of a doctor. Those with family history of colon cancer and people above the age of 50 should get colon examination done periodically.

Cancer Treatment Without Fraud

Prevention

efforts seem to have failed. The doctor used the dreaded "C" word...cancer. Now what? We hear a lot of buzz about amazing cures and successes, "If you'll just buy my book, take my pills or visit my center." The very word, cancer, scares us so completely, we believe we're going to die any minute. Sadly, it's those fears the frauds are counting on. They want you to be so afraid you'll try anything...even their product. Many of us are so frozen in fear, we ignore that fact that many forms of cancer are treatable...often, actual cures have been developed and adopted as standard treatment for cancer. Sometimes, the fears generated by frauds can cause us to choose back-alley, ineffective treatments instead of viable ones recommended by our doctors. If we just calm down and begin to study the situation, we can often relieve our fears and make rational decisions that will avoid the frauds and help our doctors help us heal.

Natural Cancer Cure...and other fraudulent claims:

Frauds come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Perhaps the biggest price people pay is chasing after these things when sound treatments are available. You will rarely hear a reputable doctor use the word, "cure," when referring to cancer. Immediately, then, a red flag should go up in your mind if someone is offering or claiming a cure. Other claims that should strike you as suspicious are ones that suggest standard cancer treatments, like radiation or chemotherapy kill people. Let's get this straight right now...people die from some types of cancer. Some terminal cancer patients choose to receive experimental treatments in a last ditch effort to try and slow the disease. For frauds to use this to get you to distrust a doctor's standard treatment, however limited the success rate, should be considered a crime. The only time you should consider experimental treatments or claims of those outside of the medical community is if you have a terminal condition and you've exhausted all accepted medical treatments. You're a grown-up, now. You should get all the objective advice and information you can, about every treatment you're considering, but people trying to sell you non-standard treatments are not objective...you need to do your own homework...and this is the most important homework assignment you may ever get.

Do Your Cancer Research:

Biopsy is usually the first bit of research done to verify a suspicion of cancer. That's where the doctor collects cells for the lab to analyze. Ask your doctor for a paper copy of the test results. This will give you the exact name of the cancer, if the cancer is malignant (harmful), and other useful information. Based on this, your doctor will recommend other tests to determine the stage (extent of growth) or grade (speed of growth) and treatment options to consider. Take lots of notes and ask lots of questions! While continuing the test/treatment recommendations of your doctor, take this information to a second opinion appointment with another doctor, not associated with the first one. While doctors are highly educated, they are human. Doctors and their staffs make mistakes. Second opinions are so you can head off mistakes before they happen.

Awareness and understanding of standard treatment options, risk factors, success rates, unique terminology and second opinions will all help you be a better patient, active in the treatment of your disease. This is why, before the second opinion appointment, you need to research the information from your doctor. Search reputable sources on the Internet for everything you can find about your specific cancer. Yes, you'll need a dictionary and medical encyclopedia. A great place to begin your research is the U.S. National Cancer Institute. It's where I've found most of my reliable cancer information. Print all the information about the cancer, stages, grades, treatment options, success rates, survival rates and treatment centers.

Highlight the parts that apply to you and write questions for your doctors. Take all the information with you to all your appointments with your doctors. Make sure to point out when their opinions differ and gauge their reactions. If their recommended treatments differ from what your research shows, ask them why. Some doctors will be humble, thank you, and offer to look into it further. Other doctors will need to be replaced, as was the case with my wife's father. My father-in-law's doctor made a mistake, treating a very aggressive life-threatening cancer with cosmetic surgery. By following the steps I've listed in this article, I was able to convince the new doctors to follow-up with radiation to significantly reduce the probability of relapse. Since, with his cancer, relapse is almost always fatal, it was better to be safe, even if it cost the HMO a couple more bucks. Some doctors and HMO's get a little confused as to who makes your health care decisions..

Cancer Treatment Team Leadership:

The Oncologist (cancer doctor), your primary doctor and often other specialists are essential leaders in the successful treatment of your cancer but you are in charge. They will present you with options, including diet, supplements, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and a vast amount of information for you to digest to make informed decisions. If you do your homework, you can control the fear, eliminate the frauds, reduce the mistakes and make the right decisions in your fight against cancer.

What's the Next Step After Prostate Cancer Symptoms Have Been Identified?

Prostate cancer symptoms are mostly similar with those of other prostate conditions, particularly benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Although there are cases where they do not appear, particularly if the disease is in its earliest stage, some men do experience some symptoms. The most usual signs include a need to urinate frequently especially at night, difficulty in starting or holding back urine, pain or burning during urination, pain or discomfort during ejaculation, blood in the urine or semen and difficulty in having an erection.

If a man experiences any of the common prostate cancer symptoms, the next logical step would be to consult a doctor and undergo some tests to determine whether they are caused by cancer or other conditions.

The first line of diagnosis in prostate conditions are prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE). The PSA test is a method that measures the level of PSA in the blood. DRE, on the other hand, is primarily used to determine any irregularity in the shape, size and texture of the prostate. Although PSA and DRE have been widely used, both of these methods are not 100 percent accurate. For one, the level of PSA in a man's blood can be caused by other reasons. These reasons could be BPH, prostatitis or even the use of medications for baldness. Medications like finasteride and dutasteride can cause the PSA level to decrease by 50 percent, providing an inaccurate result that could lead to wrong diagnosis.

In cases when prostate cancer is suspected (after employing DRE and PSA), a more invasive technique is then used. Among the many diagnostic methods available now, biopsy is the only test that can confirm whether cancer is really present. Biopsy involves obtaining tissue samples from the prostate to get them examined under the microscope. One of the important aspects of evaluating the microscopic features of prostate cells is to determine the stage of the cancer. Staging is done to determine whether the cancer is still confined to the prostate or has spread or metastasized to other parts of the body. The most common staging system used in cancer is the TNM. This system focuses on the size of the tumor, the number of involved lymph nodes and the presence of metastases.

TNM classifies prostate cancer as T1, T2, T3 or T4. The first two are used when the cancer is found only in the prostate while the last two are used to classify conditions wherein the cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland. If the cancer has already spread, computed tomography can then be used to evaluate the metastasis within the pelvis. Bone scans can also be employed to examine possible spread to the bones and endorectal coil magnetic resonance imaging to examine the prostatic capsule and the seminal vesicles.

Identifying prostate cancer symptoms is the first step towards knowing whether cancer is already present. Physicians have advised, though, that diagnostic methods should be used only if there is any suspicion of cancer or other disorders.
