Cancer can occur in any part of the body - lungs, intestine, rectum, breast or prostate. Prostate cancer develops as a malignant tumor that starts in the prostate gland. There is a possibility of the cancer spreading from the prostate to the lymph nodes, other organs or bones through metastasis. This is the second most common type of cancer in men, which can lead to death. However, with the improvement of medicine, survival rates in patients have improved considerably. The cause of prostate cancer has never been found out, however, there are some risk factors that induce prostate cancer.
Statistics show that African-American men have a higher risk of prostate cancer than Caucasian men.
It has been found out that with the increase of age, the risk of prostate cancer tends to increase. Having family members with prostate cancer increases the risk of developing prostate cancer. And of course, obese men are more prone to prostate cancer.
There are no specific symptoms for prostate cancer; however as it grows, men tend to suffer from pain in the lower back, upper thighs and pelvis. Other symptoms of advanced prostate cancer are complications in urinating like increase in frequency, interrupted flow, finding it difficult to stop or start urinating, presence of blood in the urine and the presence of pain and burning sensation. It is suggested that men over the age of 50, have to take a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test every year, along with a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) to find out the presence of prostate cancer. In a DRE, the physician tests for an enlarged prostate, lumps or any abnormal texture by inserting a lubricated and gloved finger into the rectum.
The prostate cells produce PSA, and with the PSA test, its level in the blood stream is determined. Men having PSA levels higher than 4ng/mL have a higher chance of prostate cancer. However, sometimes men with low PSA levels may contract prostate cancer; it all depends on the normal PSA level of a man. If it was always on the higher side, then there is not much to worry; this is why it is better to keep track of PSA levels. It is also possible to diagnose prostate cancer through transrectal ultrasound and biopsies. It is through a biopsy that prostate cancer is correctly diagnosed.
The doctor suggests treatment for prostate cancer depending on its severity. It can be surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy or watchful waiting. Through hormonal therapy, the effect of male hormones like testosterone is blocked to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. However, this is not a cure; it just controls the disease.
With the surgical treatment, prostate glands and surrounding lymph glands are removed, depending on the severity of the condition. However this may cause hot flashes, loss of interest in sex, impotence and other problems in the patient. Sometimes, radiation is suggested where x-rays are passed through an external machine or through radioactive isotopes inside the body. The doctor may also suggest chemotherapy where the patient is prescribed medication that is administered either orally or through injections.
However, since prostate cancer attacks older men, they are usually advised watchful waiting. This is best if the tumor is small, is expected a low growth rate or when medical treatment proves to be rather risky and may lead to death. The patient has to be monitored frequently with this treatment, but no treatment is administered.

Cancer can attack any part of the body; lungs, stomach, reproductory organs and many other parts. A common form of cancer in men is testicular cancer. This is a cancer that occurs in the male sex glands in the scrotum. Testicles produce and store sperms while producing male hormones.
About 40% of testicular cancer are seminoma type and the other are divided into four sub-types; choriocarcinoma, teratoma, embryonal carcinoma and yolk sac tumors. The cancer can sometimes also be a combination of both cancers, and are called mixed germ-cell tumors.
Testicular cancer is prevalent in men aged between 15 and 35 and is more common in white men than Asians and blacks. The exact causes are still unknown, but there are various risk factors that can induce testicular cancer. Underdevelopment of testicles, Klinefelter's syndrome where the man experiences sterility, small testes, breast enlargement and lesser male hormones and those who have had testicular cancer are all prone developing cancer on the other testicle in the 25 years after the attack.
There is nothing that can be done to prevent testicular cancer; the most that could be done is its early detection. Testicular self-exam is a great means of diagnosing testicular cancer; it is always better to test testicles immediately after bathing as this is when the scrotal sac is relaxed. The testicles have to be rolled between the forefinger and thumb for any signs of lumps.
Besides a lump, swelling in the testicles or some changes in the feel of the testicle are symptoms for testicular cancer. Accumulation of fluid in the scrotum or pain in the scrotum is also considered as symptoms of testicular cancer. Though these symptoms may signify other conditions, it is always better to have a physician evaluate the condition. Testicular cancer can also be diagnosed through ultrasound of the scrotum or a biopsy. Once testicular cancer is detected, treatment is rendered according to the extent of the condition.
Depending on whether testicular cancer is seminoma or nonseminoma, and its stage, is its treatment determined. All treatments involve the removal of the affected testicle. However, as this can affect fertility and sexuality, this has to be discussed with the family. With the removal of a testicle, the other testicle is capable of producing sperms and an erection so that it is possible to father a child.
However, any other surgery, radiation and chemotherapy also affect sperm production and ejaculation. So the treatment should be discussed before adapting it. In nonseminomas, the lymph nodes are also removed to find out the extent of tumor spread. However, this is not necessary in seminomas as CT scans provide sufficient information.
Radiation is preferable for seminomas, and not for nonseminomas as they are not sensitive to radiation. When giving radiation, the remaining testicle is usually shielded to prevent radiation reaching it as this may hamper its ability in producing sperms. Though sperm count may reduce after radiation, it returns to normal in a few years of treatment.
Chemotherapy is administered after surgery through injections or orally to kill any tumor cells there may be in the body. Whatever the treatment adapted, it is necessary to have follow up testing because there is always the chance of a recurrence of a second tumor. There are different follow up testing routines to be adapted; it all depends on the case.

If one were living in any of the colder regions of the world, the tell tale signs of having enjoyed a good vacation would be to wear a tan, acquired from hours of lazing in the sun, on some beach. Better still, is the idea of wearing a tan regularly by resorting to tanning under a tanning bed, under artificial conditions. While the latter form of tanning may look very authentic and satisfactory, it is a process of tanning that is fraught with the risk of cancer.
Thus, the debate on tanning and the risks of cancer has been raging as a debatable issue with strong contenders on both sides. Several studies have shown that tanning under a tanning bed can increase the risk of getting cancer. On the other hand studies have shown that tanning has helped reduce the risks of cancer by its controlled system that reduces the risk of sunburn.
The UV rays that tanning under lights creates stimulates the skin cells. The activated and stimulated skin cells produce more melanin, which is the pigment that gives skin its natural color. Thus a tanning bed activates this principle under controlled conditions and the fashion industry has promoted this method, making it highly popular among Scandinavian women. That is why the effects of tanning and the risk of cancer have been extensively carried out among this category of women. The results have shown that among the women who regularly resorted to tanning, the risk of developing cancer had increased to 55%. In the same way a similar study carried out at Dartmouth concluded that the regular user of the tanning method was two and half times more likely to develop cancer.
The above studies as well as findings from independent sources had led the American Medical Association (AMA) to adopt a resolution calling for a total ban on tanning under light, so as to prevent the incidence of cancer from this source. But the US Federal Trade Commission (USFTC) was no twilling to go with them on this resolution and declined to institute such a ban. The contention of the USFTC was that the use and sale of tanning equipment for cosmetic purposes could be permitted as it had certain healthy benefits accruing from its use.
Supporting the argument put forth by the Federal Trade Commission lobby another organization, namely the Tanning Trends, contended that tanning on a tanning bed actually reduced the risk f developing skin cancer. Their argument was based on the fact that as the conditions of tanning were being done in a controlled environment the tanning process was completely regulated and there was no risk of getting sunburn in the process. In a natural condition, as on a beach the holiday maker for instance, had no control over the tanning process and if the sun was hot then there were chances of getting too much sunburn, in the bargain. Such exposure to sunburn ran the risk of getting cancer even more. Thus by getting a tanning done on a tanning bed, the cancer could actually be prevented altogether.
It hit like a ton of bricks and it wasn't something that I was prepared for - maybe later in life but not at 32. In one week I went from a normal life to finding out I had testicular cancer and undergoing surgery to remove the infected testicle. There was no time wasted and little preparation for the blow to my psyche.
For more info meet: dr jack Have you found yourself or any loved suffering with this breast cancer? Then it is absolutely terrifying. But if you understood the causes of it and get treated with it at its initial stage then you are there and have a chance of fighting breast cancer. But one thing to remember is they should have a hope of getting cured by it and try to fight against it. They should be so determined that they should say "we fight cancer everyday....and we never give up". So when your motto is this then the cancer treatment centers and our missions to arm you with every choice and offer you every chance.
The week started like any other, I went to work on Monday and something just wasn't right. As it turns out something was more than just wrong. An ultrasound on Tuesday would indicate cancer had invaded my right testicle and my fears were confirmed. Wednesday brought a meeting with the urologist that would remove the testicle and Thursday was surgery. In less than seven days, my life changed.
You also have to understand that my medical life was so very charmed before all this. I'd never broken a bone, had a cavity, I still have all my wisdom teeth, and I'd never had surgery before. To be honest my worst fear was that I'd wake up with a tube down my throat like on ER and have to deal with that. To my great comfort there was no tube, just a bandage virtually duct taped to my hip and a missing testicle upon my waking in the recovery room. As I walked out of the hospital that day I realized there was a long road ahead.
Before I could begin chemotherapy, I had to bank sperm (in case the drugs left me sterile), undergo breathing tests (since the Bleoymicin can scar your lungs) and have an additional consultation with a radiation oncologist should my condition require radiation as part of treatment. I was lucky since a pure seminoma responds well to chemotherapy and likely would not require radiation.
I had heard the horror stories of chemo, loosing weight, frequent bouts of vomiting, and a generally miserable time. I prepared for all that, but it never came. During the course of my treatment, I never got sick, actually gained weight, and the worst thing that happened was that I perpetually felt tired. It's a difficult feeling to describe, what chemo feels like that is. I used to say, it feels like I'm hung over and walking through loose sand all the time. But as I read the description it doesn't make a ton of sense to me either, but that's the way it felt.
The bottom line is that I made it through and have been fine ever since. My chemo lasted from October to December and between each cycle I had a CAT and PET scan to judge the progress. All along the way we saw the infected lymph nodes get smaller and the disease gradually die.
You might be asking, so how did he get through? What allowed him to cope? I'll be honest - I gave in to the simple fact that I didn't cause this. I had no hand in causing my disease; it's not like lung cancer from smoking of ruining your liver from drinking. Once I came to this realization, my focus shifted to killing the disease and getting it out of my body. While I can't say that I enjoyed the weekly IV sticks and the daily trips to the cancer treatment center, I didn't mind them as much. Beyond the mental shift, my family played a tremendous role in my recovery. For the surgery and the chemo my family was by my side and kept me going. While I could have done virtually all of it on my own, it was very helpful to have someone at the house since I really wasn't working at this time and too much time alone would not have been good.
While this story seems very positive, there are a few aspects of my cancer diagnosis that require some attention. First, I have this feeling that I'm not out of the woods yet. I have kept up with all my follow-up visits and have regular CAT and PET scans, blood work, and physical exams. However, there's a voice in the back of my head that every now and again whispers to me - beware...And finally, while my surgical scar has healed and I've lost the weight I gained during chemo, there are emotional issues that I've yet to deal with fully. I think some upfront counseling would have helped, but that didn't happen and now I'm dealing with it.
Bottom line - testicular cancer is beatable with modern medicine. The thing is if you think there's a problem, get it checked out. Find a doctor you trust and tell them the facts, while we all hope for the best case, you need to be more prepared for the truth than I was. Should the diagnosis be cancer, understand that it's not the end of the world and there are places to turn like the American Cancer Society for advice and a friendly person to talk to who has been where you are now.
