You feel a mild soreness in the breast so you checked for lumps. You felt a little bump. The next best step is to consult a doctor, you might have breast cancer. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from the cells of the breast. Breast cancer occurs mainly in women but this does not mean that men are safe from this disease.
A woman's breast is made up of lobules, which are glands that make
the milk; ducts, which connect lobules to the nipples; fat and connective
tissues; blood vessels; and lymph vessels. Most breast cancers begin
in the ducts. It may also begin in the lobules then spread to other
tissues.
When one feels a lump in the breast, there is really no virtual worry
because most lumps are benign which means that they are not cancerous.
In fact, benign breast tumors are abnormal growths but do not really
pose threats because they do not spread outside of the breast. However,
some benign lumps increase the risk in having breast cancer.
Then there are lumps that are not really tumors at all which are
often caused by fibrocystic changes -- cysts are fluid-filled sacs
while fibrosis is the formation of scar-like tissue. These changes
can cause swelling of the breasts resulting to being lumpy and sometimes
a fluid discharge from the nipples. There are different types of
breast cancer and knowing them will greatly help in assessing the
disease.
Carcinoma in situ is a term used for early stage of breast cancer
where the cancer cells are still confined to the place where it started.
In particular, the cancer cells are confined in the lobules or the
ducts, depending on where it started. The cancer cells have not gone
into the fatty tissues in the breast nor spread to other organs of
the body.
Ductal carcinoma in situ is the most common type of noninvasive breast
cancer. Similar with Carcinoma in situ, the cancer cells have spread
through the walls of the duct into the fatty tissue of the breasts.
Almost all women with breast cancer at this stage can be cured and
the best way to find is through the use of mammogram.
Lobular carcinoma in situ is the condition which begins in the milk-making
glands but does not go through the walls of the lobules. This is not a true
cancer but this can increase the risk of a woman to have breast cancer later.
For this very reason, it is of utmost importance for women with this type
of condition to follow the guidelines for breast cancer.
Infiltrating (or invasive) ductal carcinoma is a type of breast cancer
that starts in the milk passage, breaks through the duct walls, invades
the fatty tissue of the breast then spread to other parts of the
body. This is the most common type of breast cancer. Infiltrating
lobular carcinoma starts in the milk glands then travel to the other
parts of the body.
As of now, there is no exact cause for breast cancer but there are
certain factors that are linked to the disease. Some factors that
cannot be controlled are age, gender, family history, personal history
of breast cancer, and race. Factors such as not having children,
birth control pills, diet, exercise, and alcohol are some of the
factors that can be controlled which may lessen or heighten the risk
of a woman to have breast cancer.
There are several tests that may confirm and disconfirm if you suspect
breast cancer such as imaging tests which includes mammography, breast
ultrasound, and ductogram and biopsy which includes fine needle aspiration
biopsy, stereotactic core needle biopsy, and surgical biopsy.

Following diagnosis, uppermost amongst a patient's thoughts will be these..."Am I going to die?", "Will I be in much pain?". As there is no cure for mesothelioma it is important that the patient is advised that with modern treatment they can, for months or years, live a normal life for most of the time. And that the modern drugs are very effective at keeping pain under control and relieving it.
Obviously the treatment aspect is extremely important and the patient
and close relatives must ensure that they get the consultant and doctors
to explain comprehensively how it is all going to work. It is advisable
to compile a list of questions to put to the medical staff prior to any
appointments or consultations and to get a relative or close friend to
go along with the patient.
There is no harm in taking notes with you and you might even consider
taping the discussion. These are potentially highly stressful and upsetting
meetings which might mean that you don't remember all that was said.
You'll want to know where and when the treatments will take place.
Include questions about possible side effects and the range and type
of drugs they will be taking. And how the drugs will be taken, injection,
by mouth, intravenous etc.
Difficulties arise when a question is asked about how long the patient
has got to live. It is impossible for the doctor to predict the future
exactly for an individual patient and they would be putting unecessary
pressure on themselves if they did. This uncertainty is not good for
the patient and vague answers never satisfy anyone. I would push the
doctor for an educated guess based on his experience and the results
he has at hand. This is only my opinion. I would want to know if I've
got months (which could be two or three) or years (which could be 12
months).
Fears can often be worse than reality. That is why it is important to
collate as much knowledge about the illness and disease as possible.
Discussing this new knowledge with friends and relatives can help relieve
the stress as the treatment progresses.

5 Myths About Protecting Yourself from Skin Cancer
Sara spends much of her summer near the beach. She lives in a mild climate and is very athletic. She loves to swim, bike and play games outdoors. Sara knows the dangers of the sun and so she opts for tanning salons to get her 'golden glow' while being sure to apply sunscreen every day before heading out.
The summers can be very humid,
but most of the year is mild or even below freezing during the harshest
winter months.
Joseph lives in a cooler, northern climate. The beach has never been much of a draw for him and he spends most of his time doing indoor activities or at his job. Joseph doesn't worry about sunscreen and only had one sunburn that he can remember and that was when he was a child.
Which of these examples do you most associate yourself with? Did you
know that Sara and Joseph are both at risk of developing skin cancer?
We have all heard the warnings about the dangers of sun exposure.
We know all about the importance of wearing sunscreen and hats. But
are YOU protected from skin cancer? Consider these myths and facts:
MYTH ONE:
Tanning Beds are Safer than the Sun
20 minutes of exposure in a tanning bed is roughly equivalent to four
hours in the sun. Although sun beds use UVA rather than UVB rays, 'The
Skin Cancer Answer' states that "UV-A penetrates more deeply into the skin than UV-B,
can cause skin cancer, and may suppress the immune system."
MYTH TWO:
Wearing Sunscreen at the Beach is Protection
85 percent of UV rays can even make it through on cloudy days. That means
you are equally at risk in the car, walking the dog or letting your children
out to play at any time of year - even when you're not at the beach.
Of course, you are usually less attired at the beach and so covering
up is recommended even when wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen also wears
off with sweat and water and should always be applied every two hours
or after getting wet.
MYTH THREE:
Taking Care Of Your Skin Now Will Protect You
Sadly, skin cancer can take 20 or more years to develop. The Skin Cancer
Foundation states that most people receive about 80 percent of their
lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18. Just one blistering sunburn
in childhood is estimated to double the risk of melanoma later in life.
Taking better care now will reduce the risk, but not eliminate the damage
already done.
MYTH FOUR:
Having a Tan Means You're More Protected
Dark skinned individuals are less likely to develop cancer, but tanned
skin is actually damaged skin. Repeated tanning injures the skin and
increases the risk of skin cancer.
MYTH FIVE:
You Can't get Burned on Overcast Days
Just because the sun is hidden by some cloud does not mean that you don't
need protection from the harmful effects of the suns rays. So how do
you plan to protect your family this year? Some suggestions are to limit
exposure to the sun - especially for infants. Examine your skin for early
signs of damage. Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and apply it at
least 30 minutes before exposure and every two hours after that. Teach
your children good safety habits and be sure you and they are covered
up when outdoors. Have fun and be safe. The information contained in

It seems like everyday we're hearing about what we can do to protect ourselves from cancer. All the information sometimes seems more daunting then helpful. But, while many cancers are hard to avoid, skin cancer is one of the most preventable and curable if treated early. Just by following a few simple guidelines, you can continue to enjoy outdoor activities while protecting yourself from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
I did this when my father was
diagnosed with stomach cancer. When I showed the consultant what I had
been studying, I sensed a more open discussion and perhaps a few more
technical details were covered that otherwise might not have been.
Below are several factors that increase your risk for developing skin
cancer. Please keep in mind that whether or not you fall into one of
these groups, protecting yourself from the sun is still one of the very
most important factors in preventing skin cancer.
Risk Factors
Moles:
A normal mole can become malignant melanoma,
so anyone who has a large number of moles is at a greater risk of developing
this disease.
Family History:
Ten percent of patients with this disease
have a close family member who has had it.
Personal History:
A person with any skin cancer (Squamous
cell carcinoma or Basal cell carcinoma) has a 30 percent increased risk
for melanoma. Weakened Immune System: People who have organ transplants
or are on immuno-suppressant medications, persons with AIDS, HIV or other
cancers are also at an increased risk for the disease.
Skin Color:
White skinned individuals are 20 percent
more likely to develop melanoma than African Americans. Light colored
eyes, hair freckles and people who burn easily are all at a higher risk.
Age:
Skin's ability to repair sun damage decreases with
age, so people's risk for skin cancer increases as they get older.
UV Radiation: Greater exposure to UV radiation greatly
increases an individual's risk for skin cancer. Living close to the equator,
having an outdoor lifestyle, using tanning booths or sunlamps and experiencing
blistering sunburns in childhood are common risk factors for developing
melanoma.
Now that you know how to determine if you are at greater risk for developing
skin cancer, let's examine the physical changes that occur in a mole
with melanoma. The most important thing to remember is that when a melanoma
is detected at an early stage and treated, it is usually curable.
The ABCD's of Moles and Melanoma
A - Asymmetry: Most early melanomas are asymmetrical;
a line through the middle would not create matching halves. Common moles
are round and symmetrical.
B - Border Irregularity: The borders of early melanomas
are often uneven and may have scalloped or notched edges. Common moles
have smoother, more even borders.
C - Color: Common moles usually are a single shade of
brown. Varied shades of brown, tan, or black are often the first sign
of melanoma. As melanomas progress, the colors red, white and blue may
appear.
D - Diameter: Early melanomas tend to grow larger than
common moles - generally to at least the size of a pencil eraser (about
6mm, or 1/4 inch, in diameter). However, they may also be smaller.
Remember, checking your skin should be part of your medical regimen,
and adults should schedule an annual check-up at a dermatologist office.
The only way to diagnose a melanoma, with certainty, is for a qualified
pathologist to examine tissue under a microscope.
Now that you understand the importance of skin care protection, you need
to know how to best protect yourself and your loved ones.
Sunscreen:
The best sunscreen is one that you wear daily!
Your sunscreen should have a zinc oxide content of 6 percent or greater,
because zinc will be stable in the light and not lead to sensitivity
reactions. Most importantly, zinc blocks UVB and UVA long rays. Zinc
is also a great sunscreen, because the dimethicone coated (Z-Cote) is
both transparent and non-greasy, unlike the thick sunscreens of the past.
Protective Clothing: When exposed to sunlight wear protective clothing
such as broad-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, long pants and UV-protective
sunglasses.
Summary:
While everyone worries about the prospect of
cancer, it's important to remember that you can take a proactive role
in protecting yourself and your family. Skin cancer is highly preventable
by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing and staying out of the sun
during peak hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) as much as possible. Furthermore,
by keeping a close eye on moles and regularly seeing a dermatologist,
skin cancer is usually treatable and even curable if found early.
