Natural Supplements vs. Pharmaceutical Drugs: The Politics of Surviving Cancer
It is understandable that a medicinal drug having undergone double blind studies, several years of research, and millions of dollars spent on that research, should have a place of credibility. But what if the entire system was flawed to begin with, money and time wasted on treating a symptom rather than working to find a cure or better yet, prevention of the disease? Or what if the system was more than flawed but in many cases left the person in a less healthy state after having completed treatment using a pharmaceutical drug? With all of our knowledge about how the human body works, knowing its intolerance of unnatural elements, why are we, as medical patients, so accepting of the idea that we should be treating ourselves with synthetic drugs that are virtually poison to our body? To relieve one symptom we acquire two or three new symptoms, a new chronic condition we need to deal with and, of course, another prescription medication to fill each month.
Only drug companies can make such claims. In fact, they own those words.
Of course, those involved in the area of holistic medicine can never claim to cure, prevent, or treat a disease, even if that is the intended outcome and regardless of the numerous individuals finding themselves to be in a state of improved health. Whether or not that right is deserved is irrelevant. It is worth noting, however, that most natural supplements have endured centuries of product testing.
Because of my interest in finding a holistic approach to addressing cancer, I recently came to distribute a product called Natural Cellular Defense which is a patented liquid detoxification product made from zeolite technology, marketed by the company of Waiora. Initially it was being researched as a cancer drug, however, because it is all natural, it was instead introduced to the market as a supplement. Studies show Natural Cellular Defense has the ability to remove heavy metals and harmful toxins in a safe and effective manner as well as activate the p21 tumor suppressor gene in cancerous cells. It also happens to be 100% non-toxic and is completely safe for all ages. This natural health product alone could conceivably help alleviate the toxins and waste accumulating in the average person, responsible for many chronic diseases. But no matter how many people are helped by taking this natural supplement, we make no claims. It is not a drug.
For years I have been frustrated by the radical and harmful techniques employed when treating tumors in cancer patients and would like to see non-toxic methods given greater attention and legitimacy. There is also far too much time and effort placed on detection rather than prevention of the disease. Prevention is the key, not detection. Detection means the disease has had a chance to manifest itself and take hold. At the very least we should not be poisoning a body with toxic drugs once a diagnosis has been made.
Here is the list of potential side effects of chemotherapy and you be the judge as to whether this sounds like a viable treatment option: Low hemoglobin, low white blood cells, low platelets, infection, need for blood transfusion, need for platelet transfusion, pain, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, skin injury, heart damage, lung damage, liver damage, kidney damage, loss of hearing, small stature, hormonal problems such as low growth hormone or low thyroid hormone, infertility, second cancer, intellectual decline, worsening of neurological symptoms, ineffectiveness, and death.
To understand better the hypocrisy of cancer treatment, consider the following: One of the largest and most prestigious cancer treatment centers in the world, The McGill Cancer Center in Canada, did a study of oncologists to determine how they would respond to a diagnosis of cancer. On the confidential questionnaire, 58 out of 64 doctors said that all chemotherapy programs were unacceptable to them and their family members. The overwhelming reason for this decision was that they believe the drugs are ineffective and have an unacceptable degree of toxicity. Do you imagine these same doctors are recommending chemotherapy treatment to shrink their patient’s tumors? Yes, indeed they are, as they must if they wish to follow standard protocol. There are alternative, non-toxic treatments available to cancer patients, but you must work to find these natural treatments on your own.
Of course, you may find a natural treatment you would like to pursue only to discover the medical profession standing in the way of implementing your treatment plan. A few years ago, I came across a story which is truly heart breaking. It involves a two year old boy named Alexander who was diagnosed with the most common pediatric brain tumor, medulloblastoma. After substantial consideration and thoughtful research by the parents following Alexander’s two brain surgeries, the parents chose for their son a non-toxic therapy, proven to be highly effective in treatment of brain cancer. However, the FDA denied the parents access to this treatment and the parents were informed by their oncologists that without their state of the art chemotherapy, the cancer would soon return. Alexander completed his third month of chemotherapy in December 1998 and died on January 31, 1999. He was just two and a half years old.
For you see, the state-of-the-art chemotherapy protocol recommended by the oncologists had already proven itself to be ineffective in pediatric brain tumors back four years earlier. The exact same chemotherapy drugs provided to Alexander in 1998 had been administered to children of the same age with the same brain tumor as Alexander with similar results. Of course, the parents were never informed about the failure of this therapy. You should note that when the parents hesitated to bring Alexander in for chemotherapy the oncologists were already preparing to take control by court order. The parents wanted to use a non-toxic treatment alternative, proven to be effective, and yet were forced to use an ineffectual, toxic treatment.
I am afraid these parents may have been harmed twice over by the medical establishment for there is also the possibility that the brain tumor was caused by vaccinations containing Thimerosal, commonly used in vaccinations at that time and responsible for numerous cases of neurological disorders in children, such as autism, ADD/HD, and brain tumors. You can learn more about Alexander’s story by visiting http://www.ouralexander.org/index.htm.
Just how dangerous is chemotherapy?
The following excerpt can be found on the University of Iowa’s website. Their protocol for dealing with “chemo spills” conjures images of a rather frightening scene of contamination because it is, in fact, a serious state of contamination. It reads as follows:
Patients and caregivers shall be taught safe, proper, handling and disposal of waste generated during continuous infusions of chemotherapy.
The following procedures should be implemented immediately if a chemotherapy leak or spill should occur:
1. Put on a pair of disposable latex gloves.
2. If chemo has spilled on clothing, remove immediately and take a shower, scrubbing the exposed skin with soap and water. Watch for redness, blistering, or a burning sensation. Contact your nurse to report the spill. She will give you further instructions if necessary.
3. Remove any and all sharp objects, placing them into your sharps container or any can with a lid such as a coffee can.
4. Soak up the spill with an absorbent disposable material, such as paper towels.
5. Disinfect the spill area with soap and water or a household cleaner such as window cleaner, 409, alcohol, bleach, or liquid carpet cleaner.
6. Put the absorbent material and the gloves into a chemotherapy waste container or garbage bag and carefully mark it. It will be picked up later by the pharmacy personnel.
7. If a spill occurs on a patient's or caregiver's clothing or sheets, these articles should be washed separately from regular laundry in hot water.
8. If a spill occurs on unprotected furniture, the area should be scrubbed with soap and water and rinsed with clean water while wearing protective chemo safety gloves.
9. Patients and caregivers should be taught to use care when handling vomitus or excretions of the patient for 48 hours post treatment and to use good handwashing technique.
Now imagine the “spill” they are referring to as chemicals that an individual with cancer will be taking into their body because that is indeed the case.
By no means do I wish to demonize the medical profession as a whole because there are many quality doctors and instances when prescription drugs may be necessary, however, I encourage caution when taking advice that will affect your health. It is important to consider the possibility that sometimes the medical establishment may be leading us down the wrong path. Natural therapies may not be able to claim to cure or treat disease but sometimes you need to just take a step back and perform your own due diligence, take a look at the results and come to your own conclusion.

Cancer is a very deadly disease. This disease is one of the most deadly in terms of numbers killed year in and out. According to statistics one in three people will be affected by cancer. And one in four people will die of cancer. However cancer could be prevented in certain situations. The first step in cancer prevention is learning what causes it and the risk factors involved. Avoiding these risk factors can help a person reduce the likelihood of having cancers.
1. Tobacco – 30% of all cancer deaths in the United States are caused by smoking. It is also responsible for 87% of all people affected by lung cancer. Aside from the lungs, other organs affected by smoking are pancreas, cervix, kidney, stomach and also cause acute myeloid leukemia. Quit smoking to decrease your chances of having cancer. Also try to avoid secondary smoke, secondary smoke can also be deadlier.
2. Have more physical activity – exercise greatly helps reduce your chances of having cancer. Even if it is only for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Exercising will also make you fit against other disease such as heart ailments. Try the exercise activities such as walking, running, aerobics, or yoga. Exercising can also help prevent obesity, which is also one major cause of cancer. Colon, breast, prostrate, endometrial, and lung cancer can have less chances of developing if you are exercising regularly.
3. Genetics – genetics is one of the causes of cancers. When your family has a history of cancer, the best thing to do is just take precaution. If your family has had a history of cancer, the mutated gene which causes cancer may have been passed down. If your family has had a history, you may get a genetic test. Remember that if your family has had a history of cancer it is not certain that you will have it. Your chances of developing it are just greater.
4. Environmental Factors – exposure to certain things within your environment can cause you cancer. Such things like asbestos or benzene can be able to cause cancer.
5. Unsafe Sex – you are suddenly exposed to not only HIV but also HPV. HPV is also known as Human Pappiliona Virus. Having this virus greatly increase a person’s chance of having anal, vulvar, cervical, or vaginal cancer. There are tests that help a person find out if he or she has the HPV virus. You will need to scrape the cervical cells and send them over to a lab.
6. Sun Exposure – greatly exposing yourself to UV rays will cause skin cancer. Be very wise when tanning or being exposed under the sun.

I recently had the opportunity to discuss SEO/SEM with a non-profit organization. The conversation didn't start with SEO/SEM but I got to thinking – how does a non-profit do SEO/SEM?
Having been in the industry a while I have a pretty good idea what the going rate is for professional SEM and I find it hard to believe that a non-profit firm would invest in it, knowing that in some cases it's hard to measure. What you are about to read is an interview with the Director of Online Communications for the American Cancer Society High Plains Division.
Let's get the formalities out of the way. What is your name and title?
My name is David Neff and I am the Director of Online Communications for The American Cancer Society High Plains Division
What does the director of online communications do?
Basically, my job is to manage all the website design and maintenance including any upgrades as well as any email campaigns we do. This includes any e-commerce that we get into.
Do you do any type of search engine positioning on any of your websites?
Not really. Besides submitting to DMOZ and Google we don't actively pursue any search engine marketing at this point. Most of our promotions are done through print ads, Internet ads like Google Adwords, banners and stuff like that. We don't proactively go out and position.
Now, we've talked before and you mentioned that the American Cancer Society has a few sites, including some which you are more responsible for. Why doesn't the Cancer Society invest in positioning?
It's not on our priority list at this point. We are quite busy promoting our sites through the offline promotion that I mentioned earlier.
Is there a reason that SEM isn't a priority?
Decisions like that are made at a higher level and it's not well known how it works. There is no real “baby steps” that you can take to get into it. In fact they [management] probably don't even know about it that much. It's really not on [their] radar screen. I've dealt with large organizations like yours and I've found that usually in order to get an SEM campaign off the ground there needs to be an “SEM Evangelist” on staff. One person that is the spearhead behind the campaign. Has there been anyone in your office trying to push for it?
Not at the moment but I'm seeing results from stuff I've talked to you about and the early results are quite impressive. Also, other media I encounter has had me considering it. Maybe 2006 will be the year to start pushing for an SEM campaign. You mentioned earlier that you do other Internet advertising. What type of Internet advertising do you do for the American Cancer Society?
We've done banner advertising on a PDA tool and a ton of the major sites. Finding PDA things that doctors read like http://www.webmd.com and http://www.pdamd.com. We actually contacted http://www.motricity.com as well and we've done a lot of ads on a whole bunch of partner sites for a free product, yet we had to pay full price for those ads. Next, we are planning to sell a golf pass to get you discounted green fees no matter where you golf across Texas. So we will be placing ads for those soon as well. We will also be placing Google ads for these when the timing is right. As a search engine marketer I know that Google ads are generally pretty good traffic tools. How effective have they been for you in the past?
The Google ads have been really great for us in the past - lots of clicks over the holidays. They have been better than banner ads in some aspects.
What would those aspects be?
Rate of return. We've found that some banner ads generated a lot of traffic and interest in the past. We did notice, though, that during the holidays we got lots of views but not as many sales.
So what you are saying is that you are getting better conversion rates on Google ads?
Who looks after your Google program?
(Chuckles) I do unfortunately.
Why do you say “unfortunately”? Is it a difficult job?
No it's not difficult, it's just that I only check on it when I get a bill because I have too much other stuff to do. We just don't have the manpower to properly manage it.
How did you go about choosing keywords for your Google campaign?
We got together in the communications department and sat down and and just started searching. We used the words we thought people would use to search for our product and just made a list. Then we used the Google sandbox to help with other keyword suggestions and from there we put our campaign together.
So you are satisfied with Google. Is that the only paid advertising engine you use? Or have you/do you use Yahoo?
No, we haven't had time to investigate or anything like that. I'd like to at some point, but like I said: I'm the only one doing it and I just don't have the time right now.
How many sites do you look after?
I have nine in all that I look after.
And are all the sites you maintain Cancer related?
No. We have a blogging site called http://www.quitnowblog.org which is for college aged kids. It helps them with quitting smoking and all the pains they go through to quit. The second site is http://www.schoolhealth.info/ - We've just redesigned the site and are ready to relaunch it. With that site it is used to get parents involved in kids schools to get kids more healthy. And then there are a bunch of others.
So how are these sites doing?
We're getting a ton of response to the quit now blog. It seems to be very popular with the target audience we are trying to reach.
With all these sites, do you do cross promotion?
Yes, definitely. When we do a quitnow blog and print campaign for example, we ensure that and print material such as brochures and ads match the site. For another site we do, http://www.texasgolfpass.com/, it too has been redesigned and matched to posters, brochures and so on. We definitely try and do complete campaigns to ensure the themes are consistent throughout.
So, do you feel they've been successful using this branded approach across multiple media?
Definitely. We've really stepped it up to ensure that our websites match our print campaigns. It is one of our strong points right now.
What would you like to do differently with your online campaigns?
The main thing would be to investigate Yahoo ads and everyone else out there besides Google but my main challenge is that I don't have enough time to do that. I'd also like to investigate search engine optimization but I need to find a way to sell it to management. I need a one page “This is why you need to do SEO” that I can take to them and show them that we need to do more.
Do you think that your management is resistant to SEO?
No, not really. It's just an education thing. I need to find a way to show them why it is so important and I don't know where to start to show them at a non-technical level.
Thank you for your time David, it's been a pleasure talking to you. One more thing, if there is one thing anyone in our community can do for The American Cancer Society, what would it be?
Gosh, I don't know. I know we do need help but there are so many areas we could use it. Being a non-profit group, our budgets are always tight. I guess just help us get more well-known. We have all these sites we use to help spread healthy messages, and at the same time we have others we use to help raise money. Any help that we can get for these would be greatly appreciated.
As he said, if there is anything you can do to help out this worthwhile cause, they could really use it. Whether it's supplying some links to the smaller sites like the golf pass sites or quit now site, if you can use your SEM experience to help get the word out they would really appreciate it.

Surgical castration by orchidectomy
Surgical castration is the simplest and cheapest way to treat metastatic prostate cancer. The obvious disadvantage is the psychological effect of the loss of the testicles.
Once, cancer is detected it becomes easier for the doctors and yourself to fight it out. By the age of 20 all women should start doing Breast Self Examination (BSE) it is one of most easiest and earliest ways of detecting cancer. These check ups should be done few days after your periods. You should do this check up at least once a month. A clinical breast exam should be done at least once a year.
LHRH-analogues and oestrogen achieve a "medical castration" by stopping the testicular production of testosterone. LHRH-analogues are injections that have to be given monthly or three monthly for the rest of the patient's life. They are effective but very expensive.
Oestrogen can be taken orally on a daily basis. It has a high incidence of thrombotic complications such as stroke and myocardial infarction.
Anti-androgens oppose the action of testosterone by blocking the androgen receptors. The incidence of erectile dysfunction is less than with surgical or medical orchidectomy because testosterone levels are maintained in the bloodstream. Anti-androgens alone are probably not adequate treatment for metastatic disease. Total androgen blockade by a combination of steroidal anti-androgens and LHRH-analogues or orchidectomy has not been shown to be better than LHRH-analogues or orchidectomy alone. However, non-steroidal anti-androgens yields slightly better results than castration alone.
Locally advanced disease without metastases.
The overall results of treatment of patients with disease beyond the prostate are not good. Some patients with early disease beyond the prostatic capsule, and no evidence of metastases, benefit from radical treatment. The most widely used treatment regimens consist of a combination of radiotherapy and hormonal treatment.
Treatment options for locally advanced and metastatic disease.
· Early hormonal treatment
· Watchful waiting with hormonal treatment once symptoms develop
Disease that has spread to the seminal vesicles and beyond is not real curable. Prostate cancer is dependent on the male hormone testosterone. 80% of patients will respond to hormonal treatment that deprives the tumor of testosterone. This response usually involves the shrinkage of metastases and symptomatic improvement for the patient. The response to hormonal treatment is not a cure but can last for many years in some patients. The average duration of response is 2 years. Most cancers eventually escape hormonal manipulation. This is referred to as hormone independent disease and is usually followed by death within a few months.
Controversy exists regarding the timing of hormonal treatment. Most studies indicate a survival benefit for early rather than late hormonal maneuver. Testosterone deprivation has side effects like erectile dysfunction, breast enlargement and osteoporosis. The earlier hormonal treatment is instituted the greater the chance of complications. Once again treatment has to be individualized to the needs of the specific patient.
