History about cancer

Today, carcinoma is the medical term for a malignant tumor derived from epithelial cells. It is Celsus who translated carcinos into the Latin cancer, also meaning crab. Galen used "oncos" to describe all tumours, the root for the modern word oncology. [1]

Cancer Cells

Treatment was based on the humor theory of four bodily fluids (black and yellow bile, blood, and phlegm).

Hippocrates described several kinds of cancers. He called benign tumours oncos, Greek for swelling, and malignant tumours carcinos, Greek for crab or crayfish. This strange choice of name probably comes from the appearance of the cut surface of a solid malignant tumour, with a roundish hard center surrounded by pointy projections, vaguely resembling the silhouette of a crab. He later added the suffix -oma, Greek for swelling, giving the name carcinoma. Since it was against Greek tradition to open the body, Hippocrates only described and made drawings of outwardly visible tumors on the skin, nose, and breasts.

According to the patient's humor, treatment consisted of diet, blood-letting, and/or laxatives. Through the centuries it was discovered that cancer could occur anywhere in the body, but humor-theory based treatment remained popular until the 19th century with the discovery of cells. Though treatment remained the same, in the 16th and 17th centuries it became more acceptable for doctors to dissect bodies to discover the cause of death.

The German professor Wilhelm Fabry believed that breast cancer was caused by a milk clot in a mammary duct. The Dutch professor Francois de la Boe Sylvius, a follower of Descartes, believed that all disease was the outcome of chemical processes, and that acidic lymph fluid was the cause of cancer. His contemporary Nicolaes Tulp believed that cancer was a poison that slowly spreads, and concluded that it was contagious.[citation needed]

With the widespread use of the microscope in the 18th century, it was discovered that the 'cancer poison' spread from the primary tumor through the lymph nodes to other sites ("metastasis"). The use of surgery to treat cancer had poor results due to problems with hygiene. The renowned Scottish surgeon Alexander Monro (1697-1767) saw only 2 breast tumor patients out of 60 surviving surgery for two years. In the 19th century, asepsis improved surgical hygiene and as the survival statistics went up, surgical removal of the tumor became the primary treatment for cancer.

With the exception of William Coley who in the late 1800's felt that the rate of cure after surgery had been higher before asepsis (and who injected bacteria into tumors with mixed results), cancer treatment became dependent on the individual art of the surgeon at removing a tumor. During the same period, the idea that the body was made up of various tissues, that in turn were made up of millions of cells, laid rest the humor-theories about chemical imbalances in the body. The age of cellular pathology was born.

When Marie Curie and Pierre Curie discovered radiation at the end of the 19th century, they stumbled upon the first effective non-surgical cancer treatment. With radiation came also the first signs of multi-disciplinary approaches to cancer treatment.

The surgeon was no longer operating as an island, but worked together with hospital radiologists to help patients. The complications in communication this brought, along with the necessity of the patient's treatment in a hospital facility rather than at home, also created a parallel process of compiling patient data into hospital files, which in turn led to the first statistical patient studies.

Cancer patient treatment and studies were restricted to individual physician's practises until WWII, when medical research centers discovered that there were large international differences in disease incidence. This insight drove national public health bodies to make it possible to compile health data across practises and hospitals, a process that many countries do today. The Japanese medical community observed that the bone marrow of Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims was completely destroyed. They concluded that diseased bone marrow could also be destroyed with radiation, and this led to the discovery of bone marrow transplants for leukemia. Since WWII, trends in cancer treatment are to improve on a micro-level the existing treatment methods, standardize them, and globalize them as a way to find cures through epidemiology and international partnerships.

Describe the Cancer and Cancer Research in UK Cancer

Definition :
A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide (mitosis) without control. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissues and spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body (metastasis). Cancer cells also avoid natural cell death (apoptosis).

The word originated from the Latin word for crab, because the swollen veins around a surface tumor appeared like the legs of a crab.

Problem of cancer patient
The Breast Cancer Care & Research Fund's web site, www.breastlink.com, has posted a recent article involving sleeplessness and cancer. "Insomnia - A Common but Neglected Problem in Cancer Patients" is a lead story this month at their website. The story is a review of an article published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Clinical Oncology in February 2001, and also includes a commentary by Anne Webster, Ph.D., Director of the Mind/Body Cancer Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Can cancer pain be controlled?

Cancer pain can be controlled in almost every case. This does not mean that you have no pain, but that it stays at a level that you can bear. Cancer and its treatments can be painful. A tumor that presses on bones, nerves, or organs can cause pain. Surgery for cancer can cause pain. So can chemotherapy and radiation. There are a number of ways to control each of these kinds of pain. You are the only person who can say how much pain you have, or if a certain pain medicine is working for you. Telling your doctor exactly how you feel is one of the most important parts of controlling pain.

Depending on these factors, you may receive one or more of the following:

* Surgery
* Chemotherapy
* Radiation therapy
* Hormonal therapy

Cancer Research in UK

Cancer Research UK supports over 500 research group leaders throughout the UK, through a variety of funding mechanisms including research institutes, clinical centres, programme and project grants. We are committed to the research funding of both scientists and clinicians and support a number of personal award schemes. Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness-promotion group in the United Kingdom, formed on the 4th February 2002 by the merger of the Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. It is the foremost cancer charity (charity number 1089464) in the United Kingdom, and the biggest cancer research organisation outside the USA. It is accredited by the UK's National Health Service as a health information provider. Cancer Research UK has welcomed a decision by the medical watchdog NICE to make a new class of breast cancer drugs available throughout the UK.

The decision grants approval for the use of aromatase inhibitors after surgery for post-menopausal women with early breast cancer instead of or alongside previous "gold standard" drug Tamoxifen. The drugs suppress the hormone oestrogen, which exacerbates the growth and recurrence of many breast cancers.

"Cancer Research UK is delighted that NICE is recommending the use of aromatase inhibitors, an advanced generation of treatments that build on the success of Tamoxifen," said the charity's medical director, professor John Toy. "Aromatase inhibitors form a key part of the new battery of treatments available for women with breast cancer, and Cancer Research UK is proud to be playing an active role in their development," he added. Several major studies in recent years have shown that aromatase inhibitors can significantly improve breast cancer treatment and cut side effects. In particular, trials have shown that using them alongside Tamoxifen can cut tumour recurrence rates to just 24 percent.

Cancer Awareness Ribbon Pins

Most people are familiar with the pink cancer awareness ribbons that symbolize breast cancer, it seems that these pink beauties are everywhere. But, did you know that there are many other kinds of cancer awareness ribbons out there that represent different kinds of cancer that affect women all around the world? You might have seen one or two different colored cancer awareness ribbon pins and not even known what they meant.

Cancer treatment
Cancer treatment varies depending upon your type of cancer, stage of cancer, and overall condition. Additionally, your treatment may vary depending on whether or not the goal of your treatment is to cure your cancer, keep your cancer from spreading, or to relieve the symptoms caused by cancer.

Here are some of the other colors of cancer awareness ribbons so you will know what they mean the next time that you see them:

Teal – This color of cancer awareness ribbons are for ovarian cancer. While this cancer isn’t as prevalent as breast cancer, its numbers are, unfortunately, on the rise. So, when you see a teal cancer awareness ribbon or pin, you will know what they stand for.

Peach – This color of cancer awareness ribbons are for uterine cancer. This type of cancer is also not one that is mentioned much, but is a killer if not detected early enough and fought correctly.

Lavender – This color of cancer awareness ribbons are for gynecological cancer. This encompasses several different kinds of cancers, from ovarian to cervical, basically anything that has to do with the female reproductive organs falls under this category.

Teal and White – This color of cancer awareness ribbons are for cervical cancer. This cancer is hard to detect as well, unless it is screened for, but, when caught early, can be removed and treated.

All of these cancer awareness ribbons and pins are different colors to distinguish between the different types of cancer. It helps for survivors and loved ones to spread their message of hope and survival to those who may not have heard of this particular type of cancer and make sure that other women have their screenings to ensure that they catch these potentially fatal diseases early enough for treatments to be effective. So, the next time that you see different colored cancer awareness ribbon pins, be sure to ask the wearer about it and share their story with you. It might just be the motivation that you need to see your doctor and get screened or to push a friend or family member to get their screening. After all, women are more likely to push their friends and family to get in to see their doctors sooner than later. And, like the breast cancer pins and other types of cancer awareness merchandise, most of the proceeds go toward research and the search for a cure.

What are skin cancer & its treatment?

What are skin cancer & its treatment? Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the outer layers of your skin. Your skin protects your body against heat, light, infection, and injury. It also stores water, fat, and vitamin D.The skin has two main layers and several kinds of cells. The top layer of skin is called the epidermis. It contains three kinds of cells: flat, scaly cells on the surface called squamous cells; round cells called basal cells; and cells called melanocytes, which give your skin its color.

Skin cancer can look many different ways. The most common sign of skin cancer is a change on the skin, such as a growth or a sore that won't heal. Sometime there may be a small lump. This lump can be smooth, shiny and waxy looking, or it can be red or reddish brown. Skin cancer may also appear as a flat red spot that is rough or scaly. Not ail changes in your skin are cancer, but you should see your doctor if you notice changes in your skin. The ozone layer naturally shields Earth's life from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A severe decrease in the concentration of ozone in the ozone layer could lead to the harmful effects:An increase in the incidence of skin cancer (ultraviolet radiation can destroy acids in DNA).

Who Will Help You?

Each person who registers is assigned a professional staff member who will help with learning about fund raising and physical training. He will answer all questions on fund raising and help volunteers design both a fund raising and a physical training plan. In addition, each participant receives a handbook with fund raising and training information. You will also receive a personal web page which can be effectively used for fund raising.

Types of Skin Cancer

The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 90 percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are sometimes called nonmelanoma skin cancer. Another type of cancer that occurs in the skin is melanoma, which begins in the melanocytes.

Treatment Planning
In treating skin cancer, the doctor's main goal is to remove or destroy the cancer completely with as small a scar as possible. To plan the best treatment for each patient, the doctor considers the location and size of the cancer, the risk of scarring, and the person's age, general health, and medical history. It is sometimes helpful to have the advice of more than one doctor before starting treatment. It may take a week or two to arrange for a second opinion, but this short delay will not reduce the chance that treatment will be successful. There are a number of ways to find a doctor for a second opinion: The patient's doctor may be able to suggest a doctor, such as a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon, who has a special interest in skin cancer.

The Cancer Information Service, at 1-800-4-CANCER, can tell callers about treatment facilities, including cancer centers and other programs that are supported by the National Cancer Institute. Patients can get the names of doctors from local and national medical societies, a nearby hospital, or a medical school. The Directory of Medical Specialists lists doctors' names and gives their background. It is in most public libraries.

Type of treatment

Surgary for skin cancer can be done in a variety of ways. Small cancers can usually be removed under local anaesthetic. When larger tumours are removed, skin grafts are sometimes needed to replace the removed skin. A skin graft is a thin layer of healthy skin taken from another part of the body. This is done under general anaesthetic.

* Cryotherapy can be used to remove small skin cancers.
* Radiotherapy can be a very effective alternative to surgery for basal and squamous cell carcinomas in areas of the face where surgery might cause scarring. It is also sometimes used for tumours that have grown into the deeper layers of the skin.
* Chemotherapy is not often used to treat skin cancers. If it is used, it is usually as a cream that is applied directly to the cancer. More rarely, a course of chemotherapy is given by injection.

If you have any questions about your own treatment don't be afraid to ask your doctor or nurse. It often helps to make a list of questions for your doctor. You may want to take a close friend or relative with you to appointments, who can remind you of questions you wanted to ask, and afterwards help you to remember what the doctor said.
