By 1935 physicians were beginning to notice that some patients who had asbestosis also were victims of lung cancer. By that time, numerous articles had appeared in the published medical literature which described various lung conditions which were attributable to asbestos exposure. It was found that 25% of them showed evidence of asbestos-related lung disease. However, around the turn of the century, researchers noticed a large numbers of deaths and lung problems in asbestos mining towns.
1943 Hueper Convinced of occupational origin of lung cancer with asbestosis concerned about industry reactions stresses need for workers to be informed. 1954 Steamfitters, plumbers and pipe fitters identified as potentially hazardous trade because of asbestosis and lung cancer in California. In 1968 Selikoff demonstrates lung cancer incidence among smoking asbestos-exposed workers to be 50 times greater than in non-exposed population. The lung cannot remove an asbestos fiber that has speared into its tissue.
Today workers are protected from exposure to asbestos as a result of very strict regulations and enforcement. Others had significant exposure to asbestos by virtue of their proximity to asbestos mines and mills. It is important for family members of asbestos workers to also be tested for exposure. Grace acknowledged at trial that Gayla's mother had died because of exposure to asbestos from the mine. It was acknowledged that there is a relationship between exposure to asbestos and pleural malignancy in Belfast. Most significantly, it had been ascertained that asbestosis was not the only disease associated with exposure to asbestos dust. This site only provides information about mesothelioma and asbestos, it is not meant to be taken as legal advice.

Do Celebrities Know Something About Preventing Cancer That You Don't?
Did you know that in industrialized countries, one in four people die of cancer? Did you also know that when we burn petroleum products, like fuel, diesel fuel and paraffin candles, it puts cancer causing toxins in the air? Coincidence?
For years, people have talked about safe replacements for petroleum. Way back in 1900, Dr. Rudolf Diesel demonstrated the first diesel engine that could run on vegetable oil at the World Exhibition in Paris. Of course, it wasn't available to consumers back then.
Thanks to our farmers, today we have a solution to the petroleum problem. Soya Beans and natural vegetable oils are replacing old products that poisoned the air we breathe.
Alicia Silverstone hadn't burned a candle for six years - until she discovered soy candles. Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron, Will Smith and Renee Zellweger like them, too. But beware, not all Soy candles are created equal. You see, pure soy wax is very soft, so some candle makers take a quick shortcut and add paraffin to make the candles harder. Kind of defeats the point, don't you think? But, as long as there is some soy in their candles, they can still call them "soy candles." 100% pure Soy candles burn cleanly and safely. And, because they have a lower melting point, they burn 50% longer... so you get all the pleasures of candles in your home without the toxins and carcinogens.
100% pure soy candles and scented soy candles starting at $1.99. Because you deserve to breath clean air, not petroleum (paraffin) toxins. http://www.soy-simple.com
Liugi, Martin , Sandra and Dona have three things in common. The first - They all have cancer. But, what is more shocking and saddening is the second - They would most probably not live beyond 6 months. Though the doctors have not told them that, their cancer was diagnosed at very late stage. By that time, it had already spread to other parts of the body. It was too late. Something that could have been treated earlier was rendered untreatable. Third thing is that they were normal people leading normal lives. They could have been me or you. Yes, Cancer does can happen to anyone.
Willie Nelson Runs His Tour Buses On Vegetable Oil! Seriously. It's actually called biodiesel and it's made with soy. It healthier, and smells a little like popcorn. Willie believes in the biodiesel solution so strongly that he owns a Biodiesel Fuel company. He just opened a Biodiesel Gas Station in San Diego last week. Soy Beans Are Replacing Paraffin Candles, too! Soy beans are also used to produce Soy Wax, a safe, biodegradable, environmentally friendly alternative to using toxin-producing paraffin candles. Paraffin candles put toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing agents) in your home. Soy candles don't.
Tall and handsome, Luigi is just 30 years old. He is the only son of two very successful lawyers. While his mother specializes in corporate law, his father is a judge in the high court. No wonder, then that Luigi also decided to become a lawyer. But, he chose a branch of law, most would at best avoid - Criminal Law. At 26, he successfully passed the bar examination. He had never expected it to be so stressful. It involved a lot of hard talking, analysis of investigations and plenty of deadlines. Soon he was having 16 hour, working days, 7 days a week. In college he had been a social smoker. One or two cigarettes with friends in a day. But soon he began to smoke a pack, and then, two and sometimes before closure of trials - he even hit three.
He was a very successful lawyer. He was soon so overloaded with cases, that he did not realize what was happening to his body. What started as an uncommon dry cough, gradually built up into a chronic cough, especially after he had smoked? He purchased an over the counter cough medicine and used it if the cough increased. As the months went by and his cough only increased further, he was too busy to notice. On his 30th birthday, his parents threw a surprise birthday party him and invited close friends and relatives. That's when his mother noticed his constant wracking cough. As his cough continued throughout the party, it was apparent to her that this was not normal. She insisted that he see a doctor at the earliest. Luigi brushed aside this suggestion, but as the evening continued was forced to change his mind. As he said goodbye to one friend after another and settle down to chat with his parents, who were staying with him overnight, he was wracked by a spasm of violent cough.
After the coughing ended, he was shocked to see something that shook him to the bone- the room was sprayed with blood - which had come from within his body. He immediately asked his parents to drive him to the hospital. A week later, after all the tests were done. The verdict in his case was nothing short of a death sentence - He had lung cancer. Martin was twice the age of Luigi. A motor mechanic by profession, he had always believed in living life to the fullest. He had always loved cars and on retirement, used all the money to set up his own garage. He was so good at car maintenance and repair, that he soon became very popular among car owners in his area. He was so busy, that he did not have adequate time even to play with the one person he loved the most - his grandson. When initially he had a slight difficulty in urinating, he just ignored it, thinking it was a temporary problem. He was too embarrassed to mention it to anyone.
Eventually, after 6 months he began to experience some pain only during urination, but, he was too busy to take it seriously. Once the pain increased he decided to go to the doctor. - By then it was too late he was dumb struck when the doctor said it was prostate cancer. Sandra like Martin was so stunned, that she fainted. She had never in her wildest dream ever thought that what was a beauty fetish was now going to destroy her carefully planned life. She believed in being prepared for the worst. A life full of manicures, pedicures, herbal massages, facials and of plenty of sunshine to give her the look, she wanted. If born with a silver spoon in her mouth, was not enough for her, than being Miss U.K. definitely was. But Sandra had a weakness for the tanned look. She was the quintessential beach bum. She simply loves to lounge in the hot sun.
Be it the French Riviera or the Caribbean, nothing could stop her. She thought she had the perfect life, until..., those red spots appeared. She thought nothing of them, actually. She had always felt her skin turn red and feel raw and burnt. It had to be a simple rash. But the red spots were very stubborn. They refused to go away and began to spread. She foolishly took advice from her uptown beautician and even tried the moisturizer, she suggested. No effect, she finally took an appointment with the best dermatologist in town. A few tests, and the worst case scenario was actually happening to her - she had skin cancer. She regained her consciousness and realized that she had never prepared for this. Thank God, she had no children. But Dona, 48, had a twelve year old daughter and a seven year old son. A qualified nurse, she never imagined that this day would come. She had read so much about breast cancer. Now it was happening to her. She had married very late at 35.
But two children and after many diapers, she reckoned, that she wanted peace of mind. That was not to be. Soon, she began to feel irritable and have irregular periods. A visit to her gynecologist spelled out the problem - Menopause. It had come too early for her. The worst problem was that she suffered from a dry vagina, making sex painful and not at all pleasurable. The gynecologist suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT). But that has its pitfalls. It increases the risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. Yet, she decides to go for HRT. With HRT, she was back to normal, but that was the beginning of small lumps in the breast. Her husband actually noticed one big lump on her left breast and brought it to her notice.
She immediately went for tests and for the first time in her life, found a medical condition, too difficult to handle - She was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. As a nurse, she knew the implications. Through stifled sobs she was worried, not about herself - but of the future of her young innocent children. All of these people at some point in time would have avoided either having cancer or dealt with it in the early stages, where it is curable. But, how can any person prevent cancer or cut it out early, before it takes his life.
How to prevent or limit cancer?
Cancer is a condition caused by the abnormal uncontrolled growth of cells. This growth takes place when a normal cells mutate and start growing at a very fast pace. At first, this growth is not noticeable, but as it grows, it affects the function of one organ, then the next and finally it is difficult to control the cancer as it as spread all over the body. Cancer is curable if the growth is localized to a single organ This is the reason why detecting cancer early is so important. The longer the time taken to diagnose the disease, the greater the damage to the body and higher the chances that the treatment will not work... So that makes it very important to prevent cancer.
Here are 7 steps on exactly how to do that :-
* Quit smoking - you may not believe it, but every time you smoke a cigarette, you are taking in 60 cancer causing substances in the delicate environment of your lungs. Not only that the tar present in cigarette smoke forms a thick brown layer inside your lungs and acts like a glue trapping these substances. So smoking can put you at risk of cancer of the lung, esophagus, mouth, bladder, kidneys, pancreas, cervix, and stomach and blood (acute myeloid leukemia). Not only that smoking Cigars or Pipes or even chewing tobacco can be greatly increase the risk of various cancers - lung cancer, cancer of the larynx, esophagus, mouth, cheeks and gums. o. Even being a passive smoker can get lung cancer. 3000 passive smokers die of lung cancer every year. So keep away from tobacco
* Exercise regularly and keep yourself fit - Having good physical fitness is important to keep cancer at bay. Obese people are at an increasing risk of cancer of the prostate, colon, uterus, ovaries and breast. Physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer. Physical activity can be something as simple as brisk walking for 30 minutes everyday to fun activities like dance aerobics, etc.
* Have a wholesome diet - 30% of all cancers are because of inadequacies in nutrition. According to the American cancer society, one should have an abundance of food from plant based sources especially those that contain cancer fighting substances like green and dark yellow vegetables, beans, Soya products, which help keep stomach and colon cancers at bay. Reduce fat as much as possible, in the diet. High fat diets are associated with cancers of the prostate, colon, rectum and uterus. One should consume alcohol in moderation, as it increases the risk of cancers of the colon, esophagus, stomach and liver.
* Protect yourself from the sun at all times - skin cancer is very common today, but it is also the most preventable. The good thing about skin cancer is that it can be treated easily if detected early. The best thing however would be to prevent it. How do you do that and get a good tan. Firstly avoid peak sun radiation hours between 10 am to 4 pm. Secondly try to keep to the more shady areas, so you avoid too much direct sunlight. Thirdly go for the sun tan lotion which has an SPV (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15. This will give protection.
* Go for voluntary cancer screening - Today there are a lot of camps on breast cancer and prostate cancer awareness. Prostrate cancer is entirely preventable, if proper screening is undertaken. Breast cancer can be detected early with proper self screening and there is no threat to life. Screening has also successfully prevented cervical cancer.
* Go for some alternative cancer fighting therapies - There are a lot of natural substances like Beta Carotene and Lycopene which have cancer fighting capabilities. Also compounds called retinoid are very effective against cancers of the breast head and neck. Moderate intake of calcium can reduce the risk of colon cancer. Drugs such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen also play an important role in preventing cancers of the breast, colon and esophagus
* Live in a Good Environment - If you live in a neighborhood, which has a big chemical plant or any polluting unit, It's time to change home or lobby with your local government to shift the unit. Ensure the water you drink and the air you breathe is free of any cancer causing agents.
Remember you have to take the initiate to make your life and that of your loved ones cancer free. Only then can you truly keep cancer at bay. You can get more information on cancer at the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org.

Dana Reeve, the widow of Christopher Reeve who came to prominence as Superman, has succumbed to lung cancer. She was 44.
Ms. Reeve is perhaps best known for her work on behalf of those with spinal cord injuries. Following the tragic horse riding accident that left her husband Christopher Reeve paralyzed for over a decade, Dana Reeve acted as Christopher's voice. She succeeded Christopher Reeve as Chairman of the Christopher Reeve Foundation (CRF) in 2004 upon Mr. Reeve's passing following a heart attack.
Though tireless in her work for spinal injury victims, Dana Reeve was also a singer and an actress with stage and television performances to her credit. She was on the board of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey as well as that of the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts at which she met Christopher. Christopher and Dana Reeve were married on April 11, 1992. They had one son together.
Decisions, decisions. It is possible those practical things may change for a while and that the person with cancer may need extra assistance and care. Discuss the options and deal with practical issues such as transport to and from medical appointments, possible home nursing if necessary, what to tell friends and family, medical costs, leave from work, the division of the household tasks for the time the family member with cancer may not be able to perform his/her share of the housework. There is no point at all in avoiding these topics as they are much easier to discuss beforehand than when they arise.
Although Dana Reeve was not a smoker, she announced in August 2005 that she was battling lung cancer. Lung cancer among non-smokers is indeed rare; however, MedPage Today (www.medpagetoday.com) reports, "... researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reported last year that a mutation in the epidermal growth factor (EGF) is more common in non-smokers with lung cancer than in smokers. That mutation, they reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, suggests that non-smokers have a distinct form of lung cancer, according to William Pao, M.D. Ph.D., and colleagues."
According to the American Lung Association (www.lungusa.org), "Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women. An estimated 173,700 new cases of lung cancer and an estimated 160,440 deaths from lung cancer will occur in the United States during 2004."
Dana Reeve is survived by her father, Dr. Charles Morosini, sisters Deborah Morosini and Adrienne Morosini Heilman, her son Will and two stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra. Dana Reeve lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 2005.

For everybody it is a shocking time, if you receive the information from your doctor. Its very important, to bring your strong emotions under control. There are so many different aspect of living with cancer - from the pure medical issues, to emotional aspects, to the impact on the family as well as daily living considerations. Are you sitting down? Accept that getting a cancer diagnosis is a shock to the system and people often go through the normal stages of grieving - from denial, bargaining, anger and depression and finally acceptance. How you deal with this depends much on the type of person you are and how they have dealt with similar issues in your life.
Don't go it alone. There are people who are professional counselors specifically trained to deal with people who have cancer. Sometimes it may be difficult to speak about your real feelings to family or friends, because they are also emotionally involved. A counselor is there for you and will help you come to terms with the things that you may be struggling with in a caring but neutral environment.
Join a support group. These are invaluable. Support groups go a long way towards helping people deal with the psychological aspects of living with cancer. Sharing experiences with people who are also experiencing firsthand what you are going through, goes a long way towards making things easier to live with. Here you can freely speak your mind without fearing that what you say might affect your relationships at home or with friends.
Deal with depression. Accept that there will be times when you feel lonely, depressed and sad. If you never feel this way, you are probably not facing up to the situation. Don't feel guilty when you feel depressed - it is a normal reaction in the situation. Learn to recognize the signs of depression - early awakening, excessive sleeping, a change in eating habits, and a lack of interest in things that formerly interested you, a feeling of continuous fatigue - and take action when they continue for longer than two weeks.
Family matters Families will react in very different ways. In crises families tend to behave the way they always do, just more pronouncedly so. If a family is into avoidance, this is how this situation will be dealt with. Or if they are generally supportive, that will be the main trait of how they deal with a cancer diagnosis in one of the members of the family. Family counseling might ease the situation for everyone.
