Rheumatoid arthritis afflicts millions of people and can significantly reduce one's quality of life.

The early symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis include pain, redness and swelling in the small joints (typically the hands and/or feet) on both sides of the body.

Some research concerning the early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis has been done in hopes of finding early warning signs of the disease in the bloodstream.

Unlike osteoarthritis which causes pain and stiffness because the cartilage that normally prevents the bones in the joints from rubbing together is wearing away, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms are caused by an inflammation of the membrane that normally lubricates and protects the joints. In addition to the common symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis, small nodules or lumps may be present under the skin near the joints.


If early warning signs can be identified before the common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis appear, then doctors may be able to prevent the disease from progressing to the point where joint deformity occurs. But, much research is still necessary before this can happen. Currently doctors are only able to make a confirmed diagnosis after the early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis appear.


Although it is understood what causes rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, it is unclear what causes the disease itself. It is believed that the auto-immune system, which normally attacks and destroys harmful bacteria and viruses in the body, goes "haywire," and attacks healthy cells of the body, causing inflammation or swelling and stiffness in the joints as well as other parts of the body.


Some less common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include: inflammation of the lining around the heart and lungs, inflammation of the tear and salivary glands, and in rare cases, general inflammation of the lungs and blood vessels. While the early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are confined to the joints, other systems of the body can also be affected, particularly if it is not treated.


Treating rheumatoid arthritis symptoms typically consists of treating the pain and reducing the inflammation. In most cases the drugs of choice are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or (NSAIDs), but these may have harsh side effects including damage to the stomach lining and kidneys.

Cox-2 inhibitors have also been used to treat the common symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis, but some have dangerous side effects and may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The early symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis may be treated with corticosteroids, but these are not used for long term care, because they become ineffective and may lead to thinning of the bones, weight gain and diabetes.


Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms typically come and go, sometimes over a person’s entire lifespan, and they may range from non-existent or mild to moderate or severe. Different drugs and treatments may be prescribed depending on the severity of the rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and the stage of progression of the disease.


Some fascinating recent research indicates that the fruit and the rind of the mangosteen may provide safe and effective relief for the common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Components found in the mangosteen are anti-inflammatory and COX-2 inhibiting, while others are anti-ulcer and cardio-protective.


Mangosteen supplementation may also be helpful in preventing the side effects associated with the stronger drugs used to treat the more severe rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, because of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals found in the fruit.

Those who suffer from arthritis need different forms of exercise for arthritis pain.

If you, or someone close to you, have likely heard from doctors and other arthritic suffers about the importance of getting regular exercise.


However, getting the right amount of exercise and doing the right kind of exercises not always easy.

Regular exercise for arthritis pain will keep your joints loose and limber, improve muscle strength and improve bone health.


One of the greatest challenges that many arthritis patients face is a lack of proper exercise programs. Recent surveys indicate that many arthritis patients feel there is a lack of exercise programs that specifically address the special challenges faced by their condition.


Fortunately, health professionals are becoming more sensitive to the particular challenges faced by arthritis sufferers and have some tips to help:

* Your first step is to warm your body up. This means that you should be stretching, touching your toes, or trying to, some knee bends, etc, or just getting started very slowly. This 'warm up' shoul be five -ten minutes before starting the main part of your exercise or routine.


Warming up will give the entire body, especially yourjoints and muscles, the time they need to get ready for the more active exercise to you have planned.

* Now that you're warmed up you can start the exercises. But the question is what form.

• How about walking? Try to find a quiet, safe area you can walk. Pair up with a walking or hiking buddy to keep you motivated, or take the dog for a walk.

• Another outdoor exercise is gardening. Gardening and yard work not only helps to beautify your environment, but can help you get the right amount of exercise.

• A lot of arthritics find relief from arthritis pain and discomfort through water exercise and you should have no trouble find classes. Most every pool has a class from your community pools to the local health club.


Most find that these exercises are fun and relatively easy, even for non-swimmers. The pool should be warm and comfortable. Common types of water exercises include under water stretching and simply movement through water. Water exercises help to exercise the muscles and joints without putting them under excessive strength.


A study published by the American College of Sports Medicine found that elderly patients who practiced water exercises on a regular basis experienced considerable relief from their symptoms and better overall health.


In the study, two groups of elderly women ages to 60 - 75 were studied to gauge the effects of water exercises on elderly arthritis patients. Half of the women participated in water exercises for twelve weeks, while the other group of women did not participate. The women who did participate in the water exercises reported several benefits. These include a feeling of greater flexibility and range of motion, better oxygen intake, more muscle strength, greater agility, and weight loss.


• Yoga is an effective yet gentle enough exercise that can keep your body flexible while not overexerting your joints and muscles. Beside the physical benefits (of which there are many), yoga can provide relaxation and anxiety-reducing effects that can linger long after a session on the mat. Try yoga when your feeling stressed, tired, or stiff.


How you move your body, and how you choose to move it has a tremendous effect on your health and overall sense of well-being. Gentle yet effective exercises such as walking, gardening, water exercises, bicycling, and yoga can restore your body's sense of health, vigor, and well being.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis - What is the Difference?

The term arthritis actually describes over 100 related conditions, but among these the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is mainly confined to people over the age of fifty.

There is a huge difference between these two diseases so we'll go into the main ones here.

Exceptions to this are people who have put a large strain on their joints for a prolonged period of time – for example athletes, or those whose jobs demand a lot of repetitive physical movements - for example carpenters and even computer keyboard users.


Osteoarthritis then is a disease of wear and tear. The cartilage that supports the joints becomes broken down by excessive use, causing the joints to become stiff and sore. Osteoarthritis can be painful but it is not life threatening and there are many natural ways that we can help keep pain under control.


Those suffering with osteoarthritis are usually prescribed anti inflammatory pain killers, the disadvantage is that these can sometimes have a negative effect on our general health and at best only help the symptoms while doing nothing to arrest the progress of the disease.


Rheumatoid Arthritis is a different disease altogether. It can attack any age group, even manifesting in children where it is commonly known as Juvenile Arthritis or JRA. Rheumatoid Arthritis is caused by an immune disorder, in which the immune system attacks parts of the body including joint tissue. Typical symptoms of rheumatoid Arthritis are pain, inflammation, swelling and heat. Rheumatoid Arthritis can go into remission and then flare up again which can be very frustrating!


Why this happens is not clear, however it can occur after a viral disease or after a period of intense stress. A person suffering with rheumatoid arthritis will have the 'Tumor Necrosis Factor' in their system which can be found using a simple testing

Mainstream medicine claims there is no known cure for either disease, however significant progress has been made in alternative medicine with sometimes amazing results.


Exercise has multiple benefits for arthritis sufferers. It prevents stiffening of the joints while strengthening the muscles. What is this chronic condition that causes inflammation, swelling and distortion of the joints? Medically speaking, arthritis is a name that covers many inflammatory conditions of the joints and muscles, extremely painful symptoms that make moving, sitting and sleeping difficult, even impossible at times. Often as not, the only relief is from pain-killing drugs, steroids, etc. Sadly, these drugs lose their effect after a while and the patient is no better off.


Although millions of dollars have been spent on clinical research into arthritic conditions, we seem to be no further forward in our quest to find a cure. But all is not gloom and doom, for in the alternative field of medicine there is, at last, a strong possibility of a breakthrough. Certainly, ongoing research carried out by many experts in this field, including myself, have borne this out, often producing quite remarkable results.


Even allowing for the fact that a tendency towards arthritis, rheumatism, etc., can be inherited, incorrect diet and lifestyle are also contributory factors, lending a great deal of credence to the saying "We are what we eat and do".


In nigh on forty years as a psychologist and nutritional therapist, I have found that stress is an important factor in causing and prolonging chronic ill health. It's of the utmost importance, therefore, that we learn to recognise stress and learn how to tackle it head on. Believe it or not, most people don't know they are chronically stressed. They are not aware of the important role their emotions play in making them ill or keeping them well.


In recent years, scientific research has learned a great deal about how the mind affects the body, for good or ill. It is imperative, therefore, that we learn how to control our fears by separating the ones which are based on fact and those that are figments of our imagination. In other words, "never cross a bridge until you come to it", as the saying goes.


Believe it or not, a faulty or inadequate diet and some of the common foods we eat can also stress our body. For example, few of us realise that for the most part we are addicted to salt. Salt is a stimulant which hits the adrenal glands causing the body to go into a stress reaction. Just like sugar, salt gives us a 'high', consequently, we consume far too much of both these substances.


Because our blood is naturally 80% alkaline, we need alkaline forming foods such as fruit, vegetables, yoghurt and certain seeds to keep it that way. An all-acid meal such as egg on toast with coffee uses up calcium and other minerals in our body's attempt to restore the alkaline balance. I have always found that it is difficult to heal arthritis in an acid body, therefore, our intake should be 80% alkaline and 20% acid.


From the aforementioned basic examples, you can see how important it is to incorporate psychological and dietary management techniques when treating arthritic, rheumatism and other chronic inflammatory conditions. By so-doing, mental and physical improvement can be quite amazing in many cases.


The holistic approach (treating the whole body) is, in my view, essential if an improvement or cure for arthritis is to be achieved. Treating the symptoms will lead nowhere and the misery and suffering will continue unabated as sure as night follows day!


The advantage of 'alternative' methods of treatment is that they can be used in conjunction with 'allopathic' (conventional) regimes. Always remember, even though you may have been told by your doctor or consultant that there is nothing more that can be done for your condition, this is from a conventional, drug-orientated viewpoint. Sadly, this somewhat narrow-minded and thoughtless statement often results in a feeling of hopelessness in many patients who consult me for the first time. Please remember, there is always something that can be done and as an 'alternative' practitioner I know this is true- without a shadow of doubt!

In addition to reducing inflammation, vitamin C also helps form collagen, the protein "glue" that holds cells together. Collagen is especially important in connective tissue to insure healthy ligaments, cartilage, tendons and the joints themselves.


Vitamin E - This is a strong antioxidant that protects joints from free radicals while increases joint flexibility.

Vitamin K - This vitamin assists with mineral deposit into the bone matrix.


Selenium and Zinc- The antioxidant nutrients such as selenium and zinc might also be effective because of their ability to stop free radical damage to joint linings that in turn causes the accumulation of fluids, swelling and associated pain.


Chondroitin - the key structural component in cartilage and plays an important role in the maintenance of joint cartilage.

These guidelines will help you evaluate supplements to relieve arthritis symptoms. Rheumatoid Arthritis; No Cure

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disorder which means it is a result of an over active immune system. The Drug companies and traditional Doctors have developed several different drugs that ultimately weaken the immune system, so that the immune system has a hard time fighting back in case of an attack to its self. This means contracting other diseases that could kill you!


As the disease progresses, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms sometimes worsen to the point of joint deformity.
