One in three adult Americans suffer from some form of arthritis and the disease affects about twice as many women as men.
Arthritic diseases include rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, which are autoimmune diseases; septic arthritis, caused by joint infection; and the more common osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease. Arthritis can be caused from strains and injuries caused by repetitive motion, sports, overexertion, and falls. Unlike the autoimmune diseases, osteoarthritis largely affects older people and results from the degeneration of joint cartilage. Other forms are discussed below.
Arthritic joints can be sensitive to weather changes. The increased sensitivity is thought to be caused by the affected joints developing extra nerve endings in an attempt to protect the joint from further damage.
Signs and symptoms All arthritides feature pain, which is generally worse in the morning and on initiating movement, and resolves in the course of time. In elderly people and children, the pain may not be the main feature, and the patient simply moves less (elderly) or refuse to use the affected limb (children).
When faced with joint pain, a doctor will generally ask about several other medical symptoms (such as fever, skin symptoms, breathlessness, Raynaud's phenomenon) that may narrow down the differential diagnosis to a few items, for which testing can be done.Arthritis and fever together are pointers towards septic arthritis (see below). This is a medical emergency, and requires urgent referral to a rheumatologist.
Diagnosis The various types of arthritis can be distinguished by the pace of onset, the age and sex of the patient, the amount of (and which) joints affected, additional symptoms (such as psoriasis, iridocyclitis, Raynaud's phenomenon, and rheumatoid nodules), and other clues.Blood tests and X-rays of the affected joints are often performed to make the diagnosis. X-rays can show erosions or bone appositions.
Screening blood tests: full blood count, electrolytes, renal function, liver enzymes, calcium, phosphate, protein electrophoresis, C-reactive protein and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Specific tests are the rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor (ANF), extractable nuclear antigen and specific antibodies whenever the ANF is found to be positive.
There are also numerous herbal remedies that purportedly treat arthritis, including Harpagophytum procumbens. For specifics, see the articles on the individual conditions listed below.
In March 2005, researchers at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in the USA found that a diet rich in oily fish raised the body's production of an anti-inflammatory fat, and may thus reduce the effects of arthritis. According to their study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, this diet worked best when combined with low aspirin doses.
As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.
A Brief Introduction To Rheumatoid Arthritis
This is according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
You might not know it, but you could be suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Although rheumatoid arthritis is commonly associated with the older generation (people over the age of 65), the disease is found in younger generations - even including children. How could you tell if you have it? Well if you're experiencing morning stiffness for no apparent reason (like if you had done a lot of strenuous exercise the night before, for example), you might be suffering from one of it's symptoms. As mild as you might think morning stiffness is, you really ought to give it some serious thought and consult with your doctor because if that morning stiffness is related to rheumatoid arthritis, you can work to prevent it from disabling or crippling you later on down the road to a point where you can barely function. But rheumatoid arthritis isn't just a physical condition. It has the propensity to tax your mental and emotional state of well-being tpp.
But it doesn't necessary have to be that way. With proper medications, education, support, and prescribed exercises, you could work to prevent the most severe forms of the disease - or at least prolong the worst case symptoms.
Arthritis works in two ways. First, it inflames the muscles, ligaments, and cartilage that sit in-between joints. And it's this inflammation that causes the pain, swelling, and heat. Those are symptoms that are typical indications of an injury and they're vital to understanding more about this disease. Second, arthritis works by releasing enzymes that basically consume or otherwise destroy the muscles, ligaments, and cartilage that have become inflamed to a point where they're not very useful and don't allow for easy movement. In the worse cases, cartilage disappears completely and as you can guess, this is extremely crippling and uncomfortable.
That's why we call rheumatoid arthritis a disease. Typically, inflamed muscles, ligaments, and cartilage are the result of an injury, like falling on the knees for example. But with arthritis, no injury has to occur. In fact, arthritis is a type of autoimmune disease and the cartilage inside joints is one of the things that it destroys. And any joint can be affected - one, two, maybe even more but most of the time, the disease targets fingers, hips, feet, and knees.
Once a pain relief drug is approved and out there for you to buy over the counter or for your doctor to prescribe, that's it, right? Wrong! Even after drugs are approved, they continue to be studied. Data continues to be gathered about side effects people experience; other drugs, foods or supplements that might interact; and what dosages work the best. Warning labels might need to be added to bottles if a problem is identified over time.
This is because arthritis can change the way you work, the way you interact with your family, and the way you entertain yourself with recreational activities. You might even know someone with rheumatoid arthritis and have observed how this disease changed not only his or her mobility, but also his or her outlook on life. Those of us without rheumatoid arthritis tend to take our ability to move anyway we want for granted, but when that ability slowly disappears right before our eyes, it's no surprise that we get depressed about it.
The headlines came fast and furious starting Sept. 30, 2004, the day Merck dramatically pulled its blockbuster painkiller rofecoxib (Vioxx) off the market, citing increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Since the introduction of the COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx in 1999, 91 million prescriptions had been written in the United States alone - making its withdrawal the biggest drug turnabout in history, and an even stronger case for natural pain relief.
Arthritis doesn't discriminate. It affects not only people of all ages and ethnic groups-- including children -- but also strikes our furry friends, too. If you're a dog-owner, you make sure your buddy takes his vitamins, eats well, looks bright-eyed and playful, and greets you as only a doggy can when you come home. You notice changes in mood and activity, so if your pet isn't feeling his best you may suspect a cold or stomach virus - but it could be arthritis. In fact, arthritis affects one in every five adult dogs in the U.S. and is one of the most common sources of chronic pain that veterinarians treat.
It is very gratifying to see humans relieved of pain, which was my primary purpose in creating 'Naturally Painless'. But when the same product can serve as a natural pain remedy for animals, as well, it really is a thrill. I have had that pleasure of relieving pain for animals at both ends of the size spectrum - a horse and a Chihuahua. Both had pain in their shoulders and with very few applications and no side effects, were soon back to their old selves again.

There is a huge problem that exists today with the enormous number of people suffering from arthritis in its many forms. It is said that well over half the population of this country who are over 60 suffer from either osteo or rheumatoid arthritis.
What both forms of the disease actually are I will not go into here, as it is a long and complex subject. But, arthritis is a form of inflammation which mainstream medicine appears unable to address.
Both are caused by what I call "bone and cartilage gravel", the bits of bone and cartilage which are left in the joints after the body has started to degenerate, rubbing in the joints each time it moves. This "gravel" rubs on the nerve ends, causing pain, whilst at the same time creating more damage as the "gravel" continues to rub away more of the bone and cartilage. In other words, a vicious circle that modern medicine cannot resolve.
But there are ways in the alternative remedy field that may, and I know of many cases that have, been able to break this circle.
I recommend that a daily Hemp Oil Capsule, or the liquid neat, which is quite tasty, and can be taken off a spoon, should be considered long term. Hemp Oil comes from hemp seed: THE MOST NUTRITIONALLY COMPLETE FOOD SOURCE IN THE WORLD.
Taking a quality Hemp Oil is just the same for your body as putting oil in your car's engine. It lubricates the system. Hemp is unique with an almost perfectly balanced profile of Omega 3, 6 & 9 to match the body's requirements.
It was a tricky combination of problems. The anti-inflammatory drugs had to be stopped straight away as they were likely to have been involved in exacerbating and may have even been causing the bowel bleeding. At the same time this dog needed help with his arthritis and hip pain, which was crippling without the anti-inflammatory drugs.
Uniquely among common seed oil, it also contains GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) and even more uniquely, raises circulating GLA.
GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) research around the world has shown that hemp oil (as can all essential fatty acids) boosts the body's natural ability to heal and also boosts our immune systems. The Essential Fatty Acids in hemp are renowned for their ability to improve cell growth and organ function, vitality and mental state.
Extensive studies have shown that many common illnesses (such as Eczema, Arthritis and many other problems) are related to deficiencies or imbalances of specific fatty acids, and in particular, Omega 3, 6 & 9. Seeds of the plant cannabis sativa, hemp seed (not the drug plant!) contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. No other single plant source has the essential amino acids in such an easily digestible form, nor has the essential fatty acids in as perfect a ratio to meet human nutritional needs.
Its distinctive nutty flavour makes it ideal for use in salad dressings, dips etc., as an accompaniment to all vegetables, or taken straight, as a nutritional supplement.
Hemp Oil is suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans.

I came across this herb a couple of years ago when I had a patient in extreme discomfort. He was an 8-year-old neutered German shepherd dog. He had suffered from bowel upsets most of his life. His bowel movements were always loose regardless of what he ate. His human guardian had never known him to produce a really normal looking poo. He also suffered from bad hips and general arthritic aches and pains. He had been receiving anti-inflammatory drugs for several months to help keep his discomfort at a minimum.
He came to my attention late one night when he was in a great deal of distress. He was having a bad attack of bowel discomfort and was passing frank blood from his rectum. He also felt a severe urgency to pass a stool even though there was hardly anything left for him to pass. Because he continually felt like he needed to poo he had to squat every 5 minutes on his poor old hips. His distress was overwhelming him and he was howling every time he went to squat. His guardians were beside themselves seeing their much-loved doggy in so much pain. The presence of all that blood coming from his back passage was also frightening them.
The immediate crisis was attended to but the long-term solution was Boswellia.
There are two species of Boswellia that are commonly used as medicines. These are Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carteri. Boswellia serrata is the one I have personally used and is the species most commonly available in tablet form. Another name for it is Indian Frankincense. Almost everyone would have heard of Frankincense before. It's commonly found as a type of incense. It was also a gift of great value given to the baby Jesus by the three wise men.
It has well known effective and potent anti-inflammatory activities. It reduces stiffness, pain and inflammation of the joints. Chemically it contains a compound known as boswelic acid. This compound acts by inhibiting an enzyme known as 5-lipoxygenase. The inhibition of this enzyme stops one of the major biochemical pathways involved in inflammation. The beauty is, unlike most of the common anti-inflammatory drugs used to help arthritis sufferers, it only inhibits this one enzyme. As a consequence we see all the positive anti-inflammatory effects and none of the negative ones like ulceration and bleeding from the bowel.
Not only do we not see the negative bowel effects, this herbal product will actually heal ulcerations of the bowel. As such it is, in fact, also a recommended treatment option for colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Signs of colitis are typically seen as frequent straining to defecate but only small amounts of faeces are passed. The faeces typically are more mucoid than normal and often contain fresh blood. In some cases, where the inflammation in the lower part of the bowel is very severe, there will be pain and straining to defecate and only blood is being passed.
It seemed like an ideal treatment option for the German shepherd doggy in the above story and it was. His human guardians reported back to me that within 2 weeks he was moving more freely than they had ever known him to. He was passing normal poo that could easily be picked up with a spade. He was happier than they had ever known him to be and he was no longer taking anti-inflammatory drugs.
As a general guide the dose rate for Boswellia in dogs is as follows; 10-15kg dogs would receive 500mg twice daily, a 15-30 kg dog would receive 500mg three times daily. Dogs larger than 30kg would receive 1,000mg twice daily. The dose I used in this case was 500mg three times daily.
Herbal remedies were once our mainstream medicines. Much information has been lost or at least crowded out by the all too common quick fix that many of our modern potent drugs provide. It's certainly worthwhile looking into what's available in terms of natural remedies for our animal companions. Many veterinarians are starting to realise this and are making positive moves towards expanding their knowledge to encompass effective, safe natural treatments. It may be a bit of a battle to find a veterinarian that is educated in these areas but hopefully you'll be able to find one that is open minded enough to begin looking at the old ways when the new ways just aren't working or the side effects aren't worth the benefits.
By the way it is important to use only the best quality products when you are using herbs for specific medicinal effects. Some over the counter preparations are less than helpful. Some don't actually contain effective amounts of the compounds needed. You may be bitterly disappointed in the results if you choose to use inferior products.
