Arthritis Articles, Tips and Information

Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is derived from the Greek words for joint and inflammation. It is not a single ailment, but a group of conditions. All types of arthritis generally involve pain that is generally worse in the morning and while initiating movement. It is found to slowly resolve in the course of time. Arthritis is a painful inflammation of the joints that causes severe pain and stiff joints, due to loss of movement. Although, the various arthritic disorders have no epidemiological commonality, they cause chronic or long drawn but intermittent pain.

Arthritic joints are usually sensitive to the changes in weather.

This increased sensitivity is caused by the affected joints developing extra nerve endings to protect the joint from further damage. This results in additional pain in the joints, due to the extra nerve endings. Initial therapy of the major rheumatic diseases involves the use of Paracetamol. Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAID’ s, such as Ibuprofen are administered subsequently. In severe cases, stronger analgesics are required.

Pain is a common symptom in the patients who are afflicted.

The pain is known to cause significant physical, psychological and social problems in many patients. It manages to debilitate the victims of this disease socially, since people who are suffering from acute or severe pain avoid going out and interacting with others. This makes them more depressed and emotional, which in turn makes them more vulnerable. They have to depend on the various health care providers.

The remedial measures to reduce the chances of getting rheumatoid arthritis, involves a proper exercise regimen. It should be ensured that the patient exercises regularly, to keep the joints supple and mobile. It is also recommended to follow a diet that is complete and well balanced and is supplemented with vitamins and minerals, which helps to maintain healthy bones.

An Arthritis Remedy Without Prescription Drugs

Arthritis is a painful disease that is also debilitating. There are many prescription drugs that are used to treat arthritis but some of us prefer alternatives to these drugs. So what are you options? But which arthritis remedy is for you?

1. Massage

Massage is an excellent way to relieve the pain of arthritis. It will help eliminate the stiffness that goes with arthritis and it is almost always recommended by doctors. It is well known for its ability to relieve muscle pain and spasms within the joints. It can also relieve pain on the tissue of the joint. It works by releasing endorphins that are natural painkillers that boost your immune system and help you get a good nights sleep.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture has long been used to treat many types of pain in Asia but it's newer to the North American scene. Today it has become quite popular not only as an arthritis treatment but for many different types of pain.Long needles are inserted into the body's meridian by a trained practitioner. This stimulates the body to produce endorphins which have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce pain.Acupuncture treatments are usually done on a weekly basis. The biggest problem is the cost unless you have a medical plan that covers them.

3. Herbs And Nutritional Supplements

There is no cure for arthritis but there is some relief that comes in different forms. There are many different supplements on the market and one of the supplements that have shown great results is Glucosamine.

4. Exercise

Mild to moderate exercise can help relief stiffness and joint pain. Your exercise program can include anything from a simple walk, to a game of golf, to a yoga class. What ever exercise you decide on you should always consult with your doctor first.

5. Prescription Drugs

There are a variety of prescription drugs used to treat arthritis with NSAIDs being the most common. This family of drugs helps reduce inflammation which reduces pain.

6. Diet

Plays an important role in not only your overall health but in your arthritis treatment. For example did you know that fish oils, omega 3s and omega 6s have all shown improvements by reducing inflammation and pain.

There are more then 100 types of arthritis with osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis being the two most common forms. The severity also varies from some mild aches and pains that come and go to a devastating debilitating condition that severely restricts mobility.

Understanding the type of arthritis you have is important. That will better equip you to choose the correct types of treatments that will help your treatment.

The arthritis remedy you choose is up to you. Often the best course of action is a combination of remedies that work together to provide relief. Always explore all your options which include prescription and natural remedies.

Natural Cures for Arthritis

I have to break it too you, there are no medical or natural cures for arthritis. If there were a "magic pill" it would be "BIG" news, nobody would suffer anymore and we wouldn't even hear about arthritis anymore.

There are other supplements that have a great success such as Lakota or Natural Joint to name just a couple. Do your research before signing on. There are many great products that are worth trying. What you need to remember with natural is if one doesn't work try another until you find the right combination.Never stop taking medications prescribed by your doctor and always tell your doctor about supplements you begin taking so that your total medical care can be addressed. You can also speak with your pharmacists about interactions.

However, there are a number of treatment options that make the management of arthritis a "very real" possibly.

Exercise does a number of things, it helps to maintain, or even increase, the flexibility of joint and muscles and it also helps in achieving or maintaining a healthy body weight.

Being overweight increases the pain and discomfort of all forms of arthritis, and obesity or being overweight is one of the major causes of a number or health problems and diseases. So by getting rid of, or maintaining, a healthy weight not only will help you with your arthritis, but will also be helpful with your health in general.

Exercise specifically beneficial to those with arthritis includes:

• Water exercises (also called hydrotherapy) - Typically the water is very warm and classes can be found at most pools, the city, or in local health clubs.

• Yoga - classes are available in many communities and health clubs. I took a yoga class years ago at the local Junior College - if you have one nearby try there.

• Tai Chi

• And of course, just plain old walking. Whether it is fast or slow, just get out there.

Warm weather, or if you are inside, a warm environment, will probably be much easier on you. Even if it is cold out you will 'warm up', but it may take a while.

Your Diet, Vitamins and Supplements

To start with, doctors and many arthritic sufferers know that there are a number of vitamins, minerals and supplements that are very helpful in treating arthritis. As any nutritionist will tell you the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need is from food sources and by eating a healthy diet. Fortunately the majority of the vitamins and minerals, even supplements that are beneficial to arthritic suffers can be gotten from food sources.

In short the B vitamins, B3, 5 , 6 and 12, vitamins C, E and K. Calcium, Magnesium (which helps keep calcium in balance within your system), Zinc, Fish Oil (omega 3), glucosomine and chondrotin.

Not let's have a look at some diet improvements that will also help you in getting these vitamin minerals and supplements. Eating fats found in red meat and poultry have actually been shown to increase inflammation. Switching to cold water fish can help reduce the inflammation, besides being a source of vitamins this also will help with fish oils.

Antioxidants, vitamin C and beta-carotene can be gotten from blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, limes, lemons, oranges, guavas, papayas, cantaloupe, spinach, kale, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. B vitamins can be found in whole grains, dried beans, split peas, and lentils. Vitamin D. Food sources: Fish liver oils, milk, egg yolks, tuna fish. Vitamin E can be found in wheat germ, nuts, and green leafy vegetables.

And of course the easiest diet, both for arthritis and being healthy in general is to eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables, and go easy on fats and cholesterol. The fruits and veggies will help you with vitamins and fiber, and be sure to talk with your physician or dietician as different types of arthritis have different needs as they may have ideas I didn't mention.

A good mutli-vitamin will help supplement the vitamins in your body, but it is much better and healthier to get the majority of your vitamins from the foods you eat.

Both your diet, what you eat, and exercise are part of holistic medicine. Holistic medicine treats the entire body, not just the symptoms. So don't ignore the importance on your health of your diet or the exercise you get.

Alternative Therapies Rheumatoid Arthritis To Help Your Pain

The word ‘arthritis' actually is a blanket term for over 200 different diseases that involve joint inflammation and pain.

One of the most serious forms, and unfortunately prevalent forms, of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis.

As the commonly prescribed medicine and drugs may help with the majority of the pains and discomforts, however many of these drugs can often have undesired side effects, as such more and more suffers are looking towards alternative therapies rheumatoid arthritis that are more helpful and have fewer 'side effects'.

With this article, and the help of others, I will try to suggest some alternative therapies rheumatoid arthritis that you may find helpful.

The first of these alternative therapies comes from ancient healing philosophy that integrates the use of botanicals to promote healing, Ayurveda. Ginger, Curcumin, Boswellia, and Feverfew have been used for hundreds of years, ayurvedic medicine uses herbs, nutrition, holistic healthcare, and alternatives, to treat the symptoms of arthritis.

* Ginger - Ayurvedic doctors and arthritic suffers claim that it can help relieve the pain and stiffness associated of arthritis. The ease of use and overall safety make it an easy and natural supplement choice. Ginger should not be taken if you take any kind of blood-thinning or high blood pressure medications, as ginger has a mild blood-clot slowing property.

* Curcumin - As with giner, curcumin has the ability to relieve joint pressure and pain. Like ginger, curcumin also should not be used with blood thinning or high blood pressure medications.

* Boswellia - Traditionally has been used in ayurvedic medicine to treat chronic pain and stiffness.

* Feverfew - Is a treatment that has long been used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

The bad news is that there is not been enough research to prove, most have been studied, however the studies have been too small, that these, and other, herbal supplements and botanical treatments are successful treatments for arthritis. Before you try any herbal supplement, it is important that you discuss its use with your doctor, as herbal supplements can be quite powerful and can potentially have strong side effects, especially and possibly interfering with other medicines that you are taking.

With this in mind another therapy that is used to help treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis is thunder god vine and this herbal supplement and has traditionally been used to treat autoimmune illnesses and inflammatory conditions. While studies do show that thunder god vine does contain anti-inflammatories, and some immune-boosting activity has also been detected, the studies, however, have been too small to be conclussive. You should know that thunder god vine is not yet produced in the US, so you may want to wait until it is produced in the US and has enhanced safety precautions.

Valerian has been proven as a safe and effective sleep aid many arthritis sufferers have reported that they have difficulty sleeping, and the occasional bout with anxiety so it makes sense that valerian can help in this respect for arthritis sufferers who also have troubles sleeping as a result of the pain and stiffness they suffer from.

In addition some arthritis sufferers take valerian root with the hope that the herb will help alleviate joint pain and stiffness. While herbs may be good alternatives to the medicine prescribed by doctors, the first step toward alternative treatments is simply lifestyle management choices that are also an important part of treatment, including maintaining a healthy weight and eating a rich and varied diet.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Arthritis: Old is New

Sometimes what modern man considered the “old ways” of healing have a way of coming round to be known as the “new way“.

Such is the case with Ayurvedic Medicine Treatments for Arthritis. Based on ancient Brahmin Indian treatments 3,000 to 4,000 years old, this holistic approach to helping sufferers cope with arthritis is enjoying a re-found popularity. The World Health Organization agrees Ayurvedic treatment is a useful traditional health science.

As with other holistic systems of healing, Ayurveda recognizes that all people are unique, and thus even though they may evince the same outward symptoms, the path to their healing differs.

This means the remedy for your arthritis pains and suffering is different than those of your neighbor or friend.

Several recent studies in the United States, India and elsewhere have confirmed Ayurvedic treatments as a means to natural arthritic pain relief.

The American College of Rheumatology conducted a double-blind test trial of 90 people with osteoarthritis. The study show 50 percent of the patients who took a combination of tumeric, frankincense (Boswellia) ginger and ashwagandha had significant improvements with pain relief as well as mobility. In contrast, only 20 percent of their placebo group reported any arthritis pain relief.

To use angelica as herbs for arthritis, place one tablespoon of the cut roots of either species of angelica into a pint of water and bring it to a boil. Cover and boil for two minutes. Remove the herbs for arthritis from the heat and let stand, covered, until the water cools to room temperature. Strain and drink the tea in three doses during the day for two to three weeks at a time. Then, take a break for seven to ten days and start the treatment again if desired.

In another double-blind study of 182 people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, the use of the same anti-inflammatory herbs brought about “marked improvement” in pain relief, reduction of stiffness and the severity of swollen joints and brought improvement in their overall ability to function.

A study in India considered the results of the combining of frankincense, tumeric, zinc and ashwagandha as natural arthritic pain relief. (Though the herbs have some medicinal powers on their own for the treatment of arthritis and other joint pain, Ayurvedic medicine has found combining them for better results.)

In the 1991 study, 42 osteoarthritis sufferers who were treated with the Ayurveda herbs in concert, showed “a significant reduction in pain and disability”.

And although researchers say it can take up to a month for Ayurveda herb usage to produce positive results, the effects of the herb use for arthritis pain relief can last for several years without the need to increase dosage!

To help you heal without the addition of more medication, which may bring with them own complications, requires more than popping yet another pill. It requires attention to the mind and body. Both medically-trained physicians and Ayurvedic practitioners agree a holistic approach to the treatment of Arthritis is apt to bring about the best and longest-lasting results.

To help assist your natural arthritis pain relief, in addition to Ayurvedic treatments, it’s also imperative to work at improving your lifestyle habits and practices. Here are some examples:

*Add meditation and occasional fasting to your Ayurvedic routine
*Exercise often - but avoid those that cause you pain. Start and progress slowly, but do it daily. *Reduce caffeine intake
*Don’t’ smoke. If you do, quit - if necessary, recall American humorist Mark Twain’s advice, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window…but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.”
*Reduce your stress and anxiety using simple breathing techniques and physical exercise.

Your arthritis can be managed through natural pain relief by using ayurvedic treatment. You won’t know until you try. Why suffer any longer?
