Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis and its Affects

Rheumatoid arthritis affects the many joints in our bodies and is not prominent in any one place over the other. This type of arthritis also affects the heart, lungs and the blood as well. Rheumatoid arthritis is the inflammation of synovium, or joint lining. The pain suffered from this extremely painful disease can be from stiffness, redness, swelling, and warmth. The joints that are affected over time may lose their shape and will result in the loss of normal everyday movement. Rheumatoid arthritis generally starts around the age of twenty and can last a lifetime. This type of disease typically flares and can have active symptoms or in remissions with no symptoms or only a few of them.

Rheumatoid arthritis is as autoimmune disease, which means that the body's immune system is not working as it should and lets the rheumatoid arthritis disease attack the healthy joints and the tissues around it, allowing for the initiation of joint damage and inflammation.

The Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis affect each person differently but in general have the same affects. Rheumatoid arthritis is a symmetrical pattern disease, which means that if one side of the body if affected, the other side is affected at the same time as well. Joint tenderness, swelling and stiffness can last for more then an hour after a long rest period and in the mornings as well, in some cases, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can last for an extended period. Malaise is the most common symptom of this disease; it is a general feeling of fatigue and can have a persistent fever with an overall sense of not feeling well.

What are the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

No one is positive on the exact cause of why people get rheumatoid arthritis, but many scientists believe there are a lot of common factors among the people that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Hereditary and genetics is a major contribution to the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, the particular genes that are passed from one family member to next. Some professionals also believe that rheumatoid arthritis can be caused from a trigger like an infection caused by bacterium or a virus in people that have the inherited tendency for the rheumatoid arthritis disease. Rheumatoid arthritis in a way, may be triggered through a virus, yet it is not something that is contagious and you cannot give it to other people, you cannot "catch it"

Arthritis Pain

What Causes Arthritis Pain

Arthritis pain can be caused by many different factors and affects everyone differently. The inflammation process causes redness and swelling in and around your joints, over time it starts to damage the joint and the joint tissues. This results in the arthritis pain, which is caused by the stress on your joints; it can begin to cause injury and pressure that can become unbearable. Fatigue is a result of the arthritis pain, this can make it harder to handle and a make it seem worse. People have been known to become stressed or even depressed as a result from the limited movement and not being able to do the activities that was once apart of their everyday life, this is called a cycle of the arthritis pain and will make it harder to deal with this disease.

Arthritis Pain Factors and Temporary Relief

Arthritis pain has many pain factors that can make you feel worse and make it harder to deal with the arthritis pain. Stress plays a major part when it comes to trying to deal with arthritis pain, when you start to focus on the pain, depression, anxiety will start to set in, and it becomes extremely difficult to cope with arthritis pain.

A great way to block the arthritis pain signals is by having a positive attitude and many pleasant thoughts about everyday life, this will help you take your mind off the arthritis pain. Medications are a temporary way to relieve the arthritis pain, a doctor or health care professional can advise you on what may be best suited for your condition. Arthritis in General

Almost one in three adults within the United States alone currently suffers from chronic joint symptoms, also known as arthritis. Arthritis affects over twenty-one million American each year and this number continues to grow. Arthritis is not just one disease, in fact it is so complex that it has more then one hundred different types of conditions that are all very different from each other but affects people from all walks of life, at any stage and age. The two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. These two types of arthritis as well as many others all will have different risk factors, different causes and the way they affect the body. However, all types of arthritis have a shared common symptom and that is persistent joint pain.

Many people tend to believe that if you do not stress over it, keep your mind busy and distracted it would be easier to cope with. Overdoing any physical activity or even staying still for to long will cause a reaction within the joints and the tissues and make it much harder to handle the arthritis pain, taking it easy and exercising lightly help to control the pain and keep it to a minimal.

The Pains of Arthritis

Arthritis can appear in more than one joint and for the most part will show up as wrist pain, hand pain, hip pain, knee pain and various other areas of the body. Arthritis symptoms include stiffness, inflammation and joint pain. A few signs of the onset of arthritis could include a stiffness, swelling or pain in the joints. The symptoms generally last for four or more days in a week for a one-month period. Another sign of arthritis could be joint stiffness when you have had any movement for an extended period of time or an injury in one of your joints and pain is present. If these or other symptoms last for more than two weeks you may be at risk for having arthritis and should consult your doctor or health care professional for an appointment to discuss your concerns.

A Few Facts about Arthritis

Arthritis strikes women more often than it does in men due to the genetic make-up of the bodies. Arthritis is the most prevalent chronic health problem and is the number one leading cause of disability of people aged fifty years of age and older and is only second to heart disease among all disabilities. The baby boomer generation is now at prime risk for these painful complications and more than half of them that are under the age of sixty-five today. Half of those people that suffer with arthritis think that it cannot be dealt with and there is no way to ease the pain due to the lack of information that it had ten years ago.

Arthritis, Pain Relief And Soft Drinks

Because arthritis is so widespread now, it gets a lot of attention from all of us - from the average person to the health professional. Some experts believe that arthritis was first introduced by a strain of virus some two centuries ago. But then, other experts have found conclusive evidence of arthritis in ancient Egyptian mummies. But whether it's two centuries or four millennia, arthritis does seem to be age-related. We are clearly more prone to have it the older we get. And we have therefore come to regard arthritis as a degenerative disease.

But that should by no means mean that arthritis is inevitable. "But why should we have to take natural hormone creams and supplements?" my clients often ask. "Our ancestors didn't take them, and arthritis wasn't nearly as prevalent in times past." The simple fact is, most of our ancestors didn't live to the ripe, old, healthy ages we do nowadays. They died younger and were worn out earlier - while we go on playing golf and tennis into our 70s and beyond. We live longer now, and want to enjoy ourselves more. So why suffer - unnecessarily - the aching joints and low energy of arthritis?

Sure arthritis is a fact, but we needn't resign ourselves to it. By being smart we can stay healthy. From my clientele and personal experience I've learned four easy ways to diminish or get rid of arthritis:

1. Soothex: It's a base of olive oil that's infused with anti-inflammatory herbs. Rub Soothex topically wherever you have pain and it takes the pain away, reduces swelling, and directly introduces healing oxygen to the joints and tissues. Soothex has no side effects... and you can use it as often as you wish.

2. Oil of Oregano: This herbal healer works on the same principles as Soothex, but more mildly. But it also is a completely natural antibiotic, and is antiviral and antifungal, and gives a great boost to the immune system. With such intense healing properties, both Soothex and Oil of Oregano are a far cry from commercial products that often offer mere numbing and heating effects.

3. Natural progesterone creams - These creams - such as Prosperin for women and Prosperon for men - naturally balance the hormones whose imbalance is the origin of so many stresses and bad sensations that can plague us in our middle age and senior years.

4. A natural healthy diet with lots of veggies and not too much animal protein. If you like red meats then go organic - you'll be cutting out a lot of artificial animal hormones that can play havoc with your health and well-being.

Did you happen to read that soft drinks can diminish arthritis? And did you wonder, as I did: Could this possibly be true?

The answer, it turns out, is both yes and no. If you have a bad case of arthritis and do not improve your diet and lifestyle, a six-pack of soft drinks might give you some relief from arthritis - but just temporarily. This can happen because the phosphate in the soda can dissolve some of the calcium deposits in your joints, which are the source of your arthritis pain and swelling. Indeed, what we call "arthritis" is actually an internal internal infection and inflammation.

But if you then take up drinking soft drinks as a regimen to keep your arthritis at bay, it will dissolve the calcium in your bones and put you on the fast track to osteoporosis. A losing proposition. Some recommend trying a six-pack over the course of a few hours, to see if your pain is reduced. If you try this, afterwards please stop with the soft drinks and take up with healthy, natural foods. This way the vitamins and minerals in your food will be well absorbed, and won't form deposits that congest your joints with the blockage and pain we call arthritis. For improved intestinal absorption of nutrients you should also drink kefir and / or take acidophilus.

Sure - arthritis is a degenerative disease, but it can be cured or dramatically reduced if you have the knowledge, persistence, and willingness to change your lifestyle. I've never quite understood why many of us seem unwilling to give up our suffering. It seems some just aren't ready for it yet. Are you?

Let Soothex jump-start the hope that arises when pain actually decreases, movement comes easily again, and your energy starts to flow. If you follow through with a natural diet, you can definitely enjoy your long life more. What else could we wish for?

Arthritis Pain Relief through Diet

There are many factors to consider when it comes to arthritis pain relief. An arthritic diet is certainly one such factor. However, the term arthritis covers over 100 different diseases and conditions and there are many arthritic diets that may affect individuals differently depending on the type of arthritis. It would be impossible to cover all of different types of arthritis in this article, but we will look at the most common arthritis conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia.

It is well know that those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis pain have an unusually low blood zinc level. Several independent studies have been conducted where rheumatoid arthritis patients have been given increased doses of zinc and showed marginal improvement, yet the tests were not extensive enough to be conclusive. Also, the effects of copper on rheumatoid arthritis have been studied for a long time, and although research studies vary, there seems to be some case for using copper to relieve suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

While many medical experts dismiss copper therapy, it is suggested that if you do attempt copper therapy, that copper-rich foods are utilized instead of copper supplements, because copper supplements can cause side effects which include change in sense of taste and smell, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abnormal blood clots, increased joint pain, chills, anemia and kidney problems. Furthermore, excess copper can cause cirrhosis of the liver in patients prone to Wilson's Disease.

If you have decided to use copper therapy as a way to combat rheumatoid arthritis pain, there is an extensive choice of foods you can enjoy in order to increase your copper intake: lamb, pork, pheasant quail, duck, goose, squid, salmon, liver, oysters, scallops, shrimp, lobster, clams, crab, tofu, nuts, and soy milk are just a few of the foods that are rich in copper.

As for foods to avoid when suffering with rheumatoid arthritis, many nutritionists and naturopaths suggest avoiding dairy products all together, as they seem to exacerbate rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups. Also, one should be discouraged from taking doses of vitamins that are higher than recommended without a physician's direction. Some vitamins and minerals can actually worsen certain conditions and the concentration that can be attained through vitamins can be dangerous. It is much better to approach any desired increase in vitamin or mineral intake through food therapy.

In terms of relieving pain for those who suffer from osteoarthritis there has been some success with the food supplements glucosamine and chondroitin. These supplements can be found in pharmacies and health food stores, however the purity of the products or the dose of the active ingredients cannot be specified because the FDA does not monitor these supplements. The National Institutes of Health is studying glucosamine and chondroitin, so more should be known about the effectiveness of these products for osteoarthritis in the near future. Patients with osteoarthritis taking blood-thinners should be careful taking chondroitin as it can increase the blood-thinning and cause excessive bleeding.

Another supplement that has shown to provide some relief to those who suffer from osteoarthritis pain is fish oil. Fish oil supplements have been shown to have some anti-inflammation properties and increasing the dietary fish intake and/or fish oil capsules (omega 3 capsules) can sometimes reduce inflammation of arthritis.

Finally, in the case of fibromyalgia, although clinical proof is once again sparse, there is some evidence to indicate that eliminating wheat, dairy, citrus, sugar, Aspertame, alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco seem to relieve pain associated with fibromyalgia. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, author of "The Total Health Program," nine of ten sufferers of fibromyalgia are female, and 76% of those who followed suggested dietary rules experienced a significant reduction in pain. The thing to keep in mind with fibromyalgia is that, unlike the other common arthritis ailments, it is more of a syndrome than a disease, and much of it can be reversed. Making corrections to diet as well as reducing stress and getting plenty of rest can lead to a full recovery.

New Arthritis Treatment Promises Good Results.

Many people are used to thinking of arthritis as of the disease prevailing in people over 60. It is incorrect. Elderly people are thought to be mostly affected by the disease because if they have not got proper treatment in time, arthritis manifestation is really dreadful.

Actually, depending on the type of arthritis, 35-45-year-old people are more often affected by the disease. There exists also juvenile arthritis, which manifests itself in young age. Now you have a notion of how important it is to diagnose arthritis in its early stages.

It's important to timely consult specialist of rheumatological centres. The specialists are experienced in the modern methods of arthritis treatment.

There is a new treatment option which gives hope to all, suffering from arthritis. The three biologicals so called antagonists TNF-alpha Etanercept, Adalimumab, Infliximab have already been present in the market for several years, and there exist results of long-run investigation of the preparations.

The most extensive study of rheumatoid arthritis, so called Re-Act study, was carried out with the assistance of 6000 patients of 4000 centers in 11 European countries. The results have been published only at the end of 2004.

I have previously written an article about Glucosamine and Chondroitin, this can be very useful in helping with pain and sometimes even helping to restore some of the tissue in the joints. Some Medical Practitioners are even recommending this to their patients, the main problem is, that Glucosmine is made from shellfish shells, and if you are allergic to shellfish, stay clear of it, though there is another type recently on the market, that is not made from shellfish, so people with shellfish allergies, please be aware of what type you are thinking of using.

Patients received a hypodermic injection of 40 mg of Adalimumab once in 2 weeks. In 12 weeks the results of treatment were explored and evaluated. The results were as follows: The results were amazing! Pain in joint when pressed reduced from 13% till 3%, e.g. in 77% of cases!!! 23% of patients did not suffer pain in joint when pressed.

Swelling in joints reduced from 10% till 3%, e.g. in 70% of cases!!!! 25% of patients marked disappearance of swelling in joints after12 weeks of the treatment. As early as after the first injection, 70% of the patients suffering pain in joints when pressed and 57% of the patients with join swelling pointed to the good results of the treatment.

One fourth of the patients marked the elimination of pain after 12 weeks of the treatment. Some further results of the Re-Act study showed further health improvement.

But the medicines are very costly. In Europe prescription of the medicines is under control and is in connection with the certain illness severity score. It is worth underlining once again that the preparations might have side actions and have to be prescribed by an experienced doctor.

Therapeutic effect of the basis medicines becomes apparent in 1-2 months, this of biologics - in several days (or weeks).

Who Does Arthritis Affect?

The following paragraphs summarize the work of Arthritis experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of Arthritis. Heed their advice to avoid any Arthritis surprises.

The answer to the question who does Arthritis affect? is very simple. It can affect anyone. Arthritis is not only found in the elderly, it can strike at any age.

Arthritis is not really one disease, it is a word that is used to cover over 100 medical conditions, relating to the joints of your body, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists , fingers, in fact anywhere that you have joints.

About 60% of Arthritis sufferers are actually of working age and of course, even the very young can suffer this debilitating disease. The result of Arthritis can be stiffness in the joints, together with pain and it can bring on a feeling of everything being too difficult to do, or cope with on a daily basis.

The disease has no cure, and at this point in time there is no prediction of any cures in the near future. However, there are many things that can be done to manage the problems and even help to prevent further degeneration within your joints.

As with most medical conditions, early intervention is important, it is absolutely no use leaving the condition until it is too bad to do anything. The important thing for sufferers to do, is to keep the joints supple and the muscles strong, it is no use resting the joint, the vital element is to keep it moving. Exercise is very important, Walking, swimming, gentle weight lifting, tai chi and yoga, are all very good for keeping the joints mobile and supple.

I realise that when you are in pain, you will feel that resting the joint is the best way to go. Wrong, research has proved that it is the worse thing you can do, as I said before, you must keep it moving. Exercise is very beneficial, but you must not do high impact exercise, as this can do more harm than good to your joints.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Arthritis. But don't be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

There is another problem with Glucosamine capsules and that is from all reports, if you stop taking them, the pain and stiffness will return.

Glucosamine is excellent, but exercise is even better, usually when you exercise, you also lose some weight, this can improve the symptoms of Arthritis because your back and joints is being subjected to less strain.

Good quality food can help, plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and beans, stay away from what is called junk food, the immune system is what controls all of your health, it is the system that you were given when you were born and medicine has not developed anything to compare with the way it performs. The important factor in the immune system, is that it must have a healthy natural nutrition to function efficiently, that means it must be fed correctly. If your immune system is functioning 100% efficiently, well you just would not have any health problems.

If you have any of these problems, Joints swelling, Stiffness in the morning that lasts for a while, Tenderness or pain in a joint, not able to move the joint properly, then you should consult with your normal physician, also you should consult with your physician before embarking on any exercise program, let the physician tell you what you can do, to improve your condition.

There is no doubt in my mind that all is not lost, you really can help yourself, but get professional advice first.

There are many Arthritis Information Center's throughout the western world, just look in your telephone book, I am sure that there will be a number of listings under Arthritis.

To all sufferers of Arthritis (Worldwide many millions) I hope that you will get some benefit from reading this article, Please pass it on to anyone else that you know that also suffers this problem and you are welcome to visit my website at

As your knowledge about Arthritis continues to grow, you will begin to see how Arthritis fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.
