Is your dog a little less enthusiastic about his daily walks? Is he reluctant to get up or lie down? Do his joints click as he walks? If so, there’s a chance your buddy is suffering from canine arthritis.Just as with humans, arthritis in dogs can be one of a variety of types, but the most common is osteoarthritis.
What is Osteoarthritis and what causes it?
Sometimes, that cartilage degrades and deteriorates, reducing the buffer between bones, sometimes to the point where there is direct bone-to-bone contact, which is extremely painful for the dog. There is no single cause of arthritis. Genetics and breeding have made certain breeds more susceptible to hip dysplasia, which often leads to arthritis. Obesity in dogs can also contribute to arthritic conditions. Sometimes young dogs can suffer with arthritis if their bones don’t develop correctly. An injury to a limb can also result in arthritis later in life.
If your dog displays some of the following symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian regarding the possibility of canine arthritis:
· Favoring of one limb
· Reluctance to get up or lie down
· Clicking of joints
· Visible pain when walking
· Swelling of Joints
· Reluctance to climb stairs
· Stiffness after getting up
There is no cure for canine arthritis. Generally, treatment is dedicated to reducing the inflammation, and managing the pain. You and your veterinarian should decide whether prescribed drugs are warranted.Glucosamine and Chondroitin have shown good results in reducing the inflammation, and therefore the pain, in the joints in many dogs. Commercial supplements providing this combination include Cosequin and Arthogen, among others. They are available without a prescription.Changing the animal’s diet might also help. For overweight dogs, a “light” product may be in order. Some pet owners may prefer to go the all-natural route, while others might consider dog food that contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin.Alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and chiropractic have also had positive results for some arthritic canines.
What Can I Do to Make my Arthritic Dog More Comfortable?
If your dog shows signs of arthritis in his neck or shoulders, raise his food and water bowl by using a stand or “dog diner”.
When the weather is cold or damp, keep your buddy cozy and warm.
Apply moist heat to arthritic joints, in the form of a hot towel, or a towel-wrapped hot water bottle. Never use a heating pad, as it could lead to accidental burning.
Utilize ramps instead of stairs when possible.
Maintain a reasonable activity level. Exercise and mild activity will help stop joints from deteriorating further.
The sad fact is, that once a dog develops arthritis, he will suffer with it for the rest of his life, and all that can be done for him is to make him as comfortable as possible by maintaining a reasonable activity level, feeding the proper diet, and/or treating with over-the-counter medications, prescribed drugs, or holistic remedies. And a lot of love.

The Cheaper Arthritis Treatment: Improve Your Diet to Prevent or Cure Arthritis
Arthritis is often associated with people in their 50s or older. But nowadays, more and more younger people are showing signs of this joint-related disease. What exactly are the causes of joint inflammation and what are the best arthritis treatment? Inflammation of the joints can result from previous injuries, like tibial plateau fracture, which affects certain sensitive cartilages and muscle tissues. A person can also develop joint swelling and pain if two or more of his or her family members have gout or any related illness.
Needless to say, age is also one of the most significant factors in determining the onset of swelling of the joints. As a person gets older, his or her bones tend to be weaker and more fragile as one of the results of the natural laws of aging. But this doesn't necessarily mean teenagers or the twenty-somethings can be complacent. There are cases of brittle joints among younger age brackets because of extraneous determinants like weight and existing illness.
Choose foods with high nutritional value and specifically contain Vitamins K and E, which promote healthier bones. To alleviate inflammation, a person should boost his or her intake of vitamins B12 and B6. If beneficial minerals like zinc and copper are not usually found on your daily meal plan, take health supplements that offer these specific nutrients.
There are also certain medications supposedly aimed at combating arthritis. Some of these drugs don't come without hazardous side effects so it is still best to follow natural remedies to prevent or cure joint inflammation. Arthritis treatment need not cost someone a fortune. The safest and surest way is still through sticking to a healthy diet, or even particular exercise routines, or whatever a doctor advised a patient to do. One should not wait to get older before he starts to take care of his bones and joints. A person may not realize the importance of bone health until he experiences the premature tell-tale signs of joint swelling and inflammation.
As the owner of a dog with arthritis, I know how difficult it can be for you and your dog. Even though arthritis can occur in dogs of any breed or at any age, certain factors can greatly increase the risk of your dog developing cancer.
It is understandable that obese or overweight persons have greater tendencies of exhausting or wearing out their bones. Since weight is identified as a factor in causing joint inflammation, doctors suggest arthritis treatment can be in the form of improving one's diet. There are specific diets, like meals heavy in unsaturated fat and cholesterol, that make a person even more susceptible in experiencing joint pain and swelling. On the other hand, foods rich in certain minerals and vitamins are one's best ally in preventing early signs of bone inflammation.
According to Novartis Animal Health the top factors are:
Genetic predisposition. You may be surprised to learn that up to 70% of certain breeds including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds will eventually be affected with canine arthritis.
Obesity: Overweight dogs tend to develop arthritis years three years earlier than lean dogs so it is important to make sure that you control your dog's weight.
Joint Abnormalities: Conditions such as hip dysplasia put extra stress on animal’s joins, increase a dog’s risk of arthritis. In addition if your dog has surgery such as a knee replacement surgery, like my Wanda did, your dog will likely develop arthritis around that joint.
Stress and Trauma: Injuries to ligaments, tissue and bones, and constant physically demanding activities also increase the risk by putting pressure on joints. To alleviate this, you can invest in a dog ramp or steps.
Infection: Bacterial, viral and fungal infections, including Ehrlichiosis, Lyme Disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever can affect joints and contribute to arthritis.
If your dog is diagnosed with canine arthritis, you have several options of treatment. Canine arthritis treatments include exercise, diet, supplements, and/or pain control medication. For more information on canine arthritis, visit http://www.allaboutdogcare.com.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Medications
There is an array of prescription arthritis medications which health professionals can provide to help with rheumatoid arthritis. While these arthritis medications may not cure, they can bring pain relief, alleviate symptoms, and even slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve inflammation and pain. These drugs may be pressed into service as an arthritis medicine and may be obtained over the counter and as a prescription. (Most everyone is familiar with aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium.) The only down side to these arthritis medications is they can lead to stomach problems, such as indigestion and bleeding. They can also raise an individual’s blood pressure and cause susceptibility to fluid retention.
COX-2 inhibitors are a class of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which do not cause as much harm to the stomach. This class of arthritis medication works by suppressing an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which is an issue in inflammation. However, fluid retention and elevated blood pressure are side effects of COX-2 inhibitors. Reports are also coming in that individuals who use this class of drug may be at an increased risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
Corticosteroids are arthritis medications which may reduce pain and inflammation. They can also slow down the damage to joints caused by rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, quite a few arthritis patients who take corticosteroids report they feel significantly better. However, after a time the effectiveness of corticosteroids may wear off. There is also the risk of acquiring significant side effects such as diabetes, weight gain, and decreased bone density, after long-time use of corticosteroids.
It is important to see a doctor at the earliest signs of rheumatoid arthritis. While modern medicine has been unable to come up with a cure for arthritis, they are making strides in pain relief and slowing down the progression rate of rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. Immunosuppressants might be supplied as an arthritis medication to help control the immune system. Without such treatment, the immune system in rheumatoid arthritis patients is out of balance and it is not controlled. TNF blockers are sometimes prescribed together with an immunosuppressant. TNF blockers operate by blocking the protein which inflames the joints. Those on TNF blockers have reported that pain was diminished and stiffness alleviated.
Those diagnosed promptly with rheumatoid arthritis can be given arthritis medications known as disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. These drugs slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Hence, if the arthritis is discovered early, much damage to the joints can be avoided.

Glucosamine for Cat Arthritis: Is It Safe?
With the potential to repair damaged joints and slow the progression of arthritis, glucosamine has become an immensely popular dietary supplement around the world. In 1999, it was the top-selling dietary supplement in the United States, with annual sales of US $288 million.
Since glucosamine works so well for human arthritis, it is natural to ask: “What about cat arthritis?” Is it safe? Is it effective?
The answer: Yes, it appears to be both safe and effective.
The main safety concern comes from animal studies in which large amounts of glucosamine were given to rats and other animals intravenously, for short periods of time. Under these extreme and usual conditions, it tended to decrease insulin levels and/or induce insulin resistance. When researchers tested humans with large amounts of intravenous glucosamine, the same thing happened. Hence a concern arose that it could cause diabetes or make diabetes worse.
Normal therapeutic doses of glucosamine given orally have never been shown to have an adverse effect on insulin levels, insulin resistance or blood sugar levels. Even in diabetic rats and type 2 diabetic humans, normal therapeutic doses taken orally have been shown to have no significant effect on insulin, insulin resistance or blood sugar levels.
Cosequin is the brand name of a glucosamine and chondroitin formulation made to treat dog arthritis, cat arthritis and horse arthritis. It is taken orally and appears to have an excellent safety record.
Cosequin has been seen to have an excellent safety profile. In safety studies, Cosequin given at twice label recommended levels for 30 days in healthy cats had no adverse effects on blood sugar levels. No clinically significant effects were seen on any biochemical parameter in these studies.
Although no change in blood sugar control would be expected for a diabetic cat, as with the addition of anything new to a diabetic’s regimen, it is advisable to monitor closely.
I have spent over 15 years of my life studying arthritis treatment in order to master arthritis treatment secrets, understand arthritis treatment intricacies, and update my knowledge according to the developments in the field. I present the several important principles I have learned about arthritis treatment in this simple, enjoyable, and interesting article. What took me years to know will only take you a few minutes. Read on!
For most people, arthritis treatment using the state of the art arthritis treatment as offered by the top medical doctors in the country will only get you so far.Arthritis treatment drugs can suppress your symptoms, but they will not heal your arthritis. At best, they will slow down or temporarily stop the damage being done to your joints, giving you time to seek out alternative arthritis treatments that heal the underlying condition. At worst, they will produce side effects that can sometimes be as bad as the arthritis itself.Joint replacement surgery is a godsend to many, but again, that isn’t really treating the arthritis, it is recreating a functional joint after arthritis has already destroyed one you were born with.
5. A good broth made wine or vinegar in the broth to extract the gelatin and other joint building components of cartilage (such as chondroitin and glucosamine) from soup bones, is one cheap and very healing arthritis treatment. Sliced pork trotters, beef feet, rib bones, chicken carcasses and feet, and whole fish are all good starting materials for making arthritis treatment broths. Simmer the bones slowly for 4-24 hours to extract the maximum amount of arthritis healing nutrients. These broths are much cheaper and tastier than buying the same thing in pill form.
What type of arthritis treatment actually treats the underlying causes of the disease?
Diet is one of the most popular and successful types of arthritis treatment. One of the underlying causes of arthritis for many people is food sensitivities. If you are one of these people, arthritis treatment first proceeds by finding out your exact food sensitivities. Then you need to eliminate these problem foods from your diet. This type of arthritis treatment strategy can often work miracles. The ALCAT blood test is one way to discover if you have any food sensitivities and if so, exactly what they are. Selectively eliminating any suspected problem foods from your diet for a week and then systematically reintroducing them, with at least 24 hours between each reintroduction, is another.
This type of arthritis treatment is two fold. First you most know exactly what your problem foods are. Second, you must know all the hidden sources of these foods, so you don’t unknowingly eat them. For instance, table salt is half dextrose, half salt. The dextrose in the United States is made from corn. Individuals with corn sensitivities will sometimes have their arthritis activated whenever they eat food that contains table salt.Besides foods to avoid, there are also healthy foods to seek out. Assuming you don’t have a food sensitivity to them, you will want to eat foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. Including the spices tumeric, ginger, and cumin in your diet, for instance, can calm inflammation without the negative side effects of many prescription arthritis drugs.
At age 25, Barbara Allan developed arthritis similar to rheumatoid arthritis. Within a few years she was in electric cart. She is now arthritis free and writes about arthritis treatment that works, as well as publishes the expert advice of others also on the topic of arthritis treatment.
Arthritis treatment using diet is one of the most popular and successful types of arthritis treatment.
Here I describe 6 types of arthritis diets that are effective as arthritis treatment strategies.
1. The underlying causes of arthritis for many people is food sensitivities. If you are one of these people, finding out your exact food sensitivities and eliminating these problem foods from your diet can work miracles. The ALCAT blood test is one way to discover if you have any food sensitivities and if so, exactly what they are. Selectively eliminating any suspected problem foods from your diet for a week and then systematically reintroducing them, with at least 24 hours between each reintroduction, is another.2. Specific foods have anti-inflammatory properties. Including the spices tumeric, ginger, and cumin in your diet, for instance, calm inflammation without the negative side effects of many prescription arthritis drugs.
3. Poor digestion is another underlying cause of arthritis. Healing the digestive tract can often heal arthritis. The types of bacteria that flourish in a health digestive system are called probiotics. Taking probiotic pills or eating foods rich in probiotics (such as miso, homemade sauerkraut, live culture yogurt and kefir, and kim chi) are one way to bring the digestive tract into a state of greater health. This is especially true if you have ever taken antibiotics, even years ago.
4. Cabbage and cabbage juice contain a type of protein called mucins that coat the stomach and allow it to heal. Gelatin also has stomach healing properties, for the same reason.
6. Arthritis is a disease of acidity. The body become acidic when we eat too much protein and carbohydrate, especially refined carbohydrates like sugar and white flour. Eating 80% of the diet as vegetables is a healthy way to bring the body back into the correct pH range. Once it comes back into the correct range, arthritis will often disappear.
If you are highly acidic, it may take several months or even a year or longer on an alkalizing diet (one high in vegetables, low in protein and carbohydrates) to reestablish a stable, healthy pH balance.
Substitute alfalfa and other teas which are alkalizing, for coffee and soft drinks which contribute to acidity.
It takes a while to neutralize all the excess acidity stored in the body. This is why some people have arthritis treatment success by going on a largely vegetarian diet for a year or more and resuming a vegetarian diet for a while whenever they feel like the arthritis might be starting to come back.
You can test your pH by swallowing several times first thing in the morning before you have eaten anything or had anything to drink. Then spit onto a piece of litmus paper. Ideally the pH of your saliva should be around 7 to 7.2. You can purchase litmus paper for testing the pH of saliva and/or urine in most health food stores.
Even if you are going the conventional arthritis treatment route, incorporating these arthritis treatment diet strategies can make a big difference in how well you feel.
