Arthritis Articles, Tips and Information

Goji and Arthritis

Arthritis pain can cause sadness and depression. The pain can cause you to feel like you are missing out on life and the loss of sleep can keep you from enjoying even the simple things in life.

In an Asian anti-obesity study, patients were given, goji each morning and each afternoon.

The problems associated with arthritis causes extreme frustration because arthritis makes even the simplest of daily tasks nearly impossible. In advanced stages arthritis can be completely disabling.

We are happy to say that arthritis does not always have to limit your life. Many people are finding the incredible benefits of a remarkable new product and are awed by its unmatched health-promoting powers.

They are finding one of the most prized secrets of the ancient Himalayans who were believed to be the first natural healers, and who shared their wisdom with the ancient herbalists of China, Tibet, and India. That wonderful find is Goji Juice. Since its discovery in the Himalayas, those who know of this incredible creation are awed by its unmatched health-promoting powers.

We tend to think of arthritis as an old age disease. Perhaps that is because the most common form of arthritis - the wear and tear - degenerative condition known as osteoarthritis (OA) - is most often seen in people over 60. But the OA is not the only form of arthritis. Although many of us refer to it as if it were a single disease, arthritis is actually a catchall term that covers more than 100 medical conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus, gout ad scleroderma. Arthritis can strike at any age often without warning. In various forms, if affects more than 70 miilion adults and 300,000 children in America alone.

No matter what the source of arthritis, there is always the common factor of joint inflammation, often accompanied by pain, stiffness, restricted motion, warmth, swelling, and damage to the protective joint cartilage and surrounding tissues. This damage becomes progressively debilitating as joints become weakened and destabilized. Ultimately, arthritis can turn even the simplest daily tasks into a painful ordeal.

For those diagnosed with systemic forms of arthritis, the situation can be far worse. Systemic arthritis can affect the whole body, wreaking havoc on the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels, and skin.

Leading Causes of Arthritis

It has been estimated that there are more than 200 causes of the various forms of arthritis. And yet, there are some key risk factors:

A. Cigarette Smoking
Smoking has been proven over and over again to increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. A recent large-scale study published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases concluded that even moderate smokers (6 per day) could increase their risk by as much as 1500%!

B. Obesity
Obesity is another major cause of arthritis. According to an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the single biggest risk factor for osteoarthritis in the hips and hands of people older than 60 is being overweight. Reducing the symptoms of this painful disease should be a great inspiration to drop those pounds.

Results were wonderful ith most patients losing significant weight. In a 2002 research at the Huazhong Agricultural University in China, it was revealed that goji's master molecule polysaccharide improved the conversion of food into energy and reduced body weight.

C. Stress
Stress had been shown to be a major trigger in initiating a flare-up, thus it is important to avoid it when possible and to consider the use of relaxation techniques...and goji juice. Goji provides the energy reserves to help you handle just about any difficulty. In Asia, it is said that constant consumption of goji brings a cheerful attitude and nothing beats good cheer overcoming stress!

Canine Arthritis

Is your dog a little less enthusiastic about his daily walks?

Is he reluctant to get up or lie down? Do his joints click as he walks? If so, there's a chance your buddy is suffering from canine arthritis.Just as with humans, arthritis in dogs can be one of a variety of types, but the most common is osteoarthritis.

What is Osteoarthritis and what causes it?

Cartilage in joints acts as a buffer between bones. Sometimes, that cartilage degrades and deteriorates, reducing the buffer between bones, sometimes to the point where there is direct bone-to-bone contact, which is extremely painful for the dog. There is no single cause of arthritis. Genetics and breeding have made certain breeds more susceptible to hip dysplasia, which often leads to arthritis. Obesity in dogs can also contribute to arthritic conditions. Sometimes young dogs can suffer with arthritis if their bones don't develop correctly. An injury to a limb can also result in arthritis later in life.

Symptoms

If your dog displays some of the following symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian regarding the possibility of canine arthritis:

· Inactivity · Favoring of one limb · Reluctance to get up or lie down · Clicking of joints · Visible pain when walking · Swelling of Joints · Whimpering/Crying · Reluctance to climb stairs · Stiffness after getting up

Treatment

There is no cure for canine arthritis. Generally, treatment is dedicated to reducing the inflammation, and managing the pain. You and your veterinarian should decide whether prescribed drugs are warranted. Glucosamine and Chondroitin have shown good results in reducing the inflammation, and therefore the pain, in the joints in many dogs. Commercial supplements providing this combination include Cosequin and Arthogen, among others. They are available without a prescription.

What Can I Do to Make my Arthritic Dog More Comfortable?

If your dog shows signs of arthritis in his neck or shoulders, raise his food and water bowl by using a stand or "dog diner".

When the weather is cold or damp, keep your buddy cozy and warm.Apply moist heat to arthritic joints, in the form of a hot towel, or a towel-wrapped hot water bottle. Never use a heating pad, as it could lead to accidental burning.

Utilize ramps instead of stairs when possible.

Maintain a reasonable activity level. Exercise and mild activity will help stop joints from deteriorating further.

Conclusion

The sad fact is, that once a dog develops arthritis, he will suffer with it for the rest of his life, and all that can be done for him is to make him as comfortable as possible by maintaining a reasonable activity level, feeding the proper diet, and/or treating with over-the-counter medications, prescribed drugs, or holistic remedies. And a lot of love.

Foot Drop and Foot Arthritis

Approximately 70 million North Americans suffer from some form of arthritis. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. But when most people talk about about it, they are usually referring to the most common form, osteoarthritis ("oster" means bone). With a Foot Drop development, however, you can become more prone to developing some form arthritis, increasing inflammation, swelling and pain in the joint.

Changing the animal's diet might also help. For overweight dogs, a "light" product may be in order. Some pet owners may prefer to go the all-natural route, while others might consider dog food that contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin.Alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and chiropractic have also had positive results for some arthritic canines.

If you have Foot Drop, walking becomes a challenge due to the patient's inability to control the foot at the ankle. The foot may appear floppy and the patient may drag the foot and toes while walking. Patients with foot drop usually exhibit an exaggerated or high-stepping walk called Steppage Gait or Footdrop Gait. This movement can put extra stress on other parts of the body like the hips and back. If left unsupported, can lead to further injury to the back, hips and knees and set the stage for arthritis to set in. Each time you plant your foot on a surface, you deliver a force throughout your body equal to two and one half times your weight.

The osteoarthritis condition may develop along the spine, or in the knees applying more stress to the palm of the foot. When exercising, it is better to not run or walk on concrete, but choose a dirt path for your long daily exercise regime. Grassy surface is ideal if there is no uneven surfaces or hidden small holes, as that is hard on the feet, knees and back.

Arthritis and Gout

One of my mentors in the early part of my practice, Dr Marshall Mandell, wrote a book describing arthritis as an allergic reaction in many, if not most, or even, all cases. It's "Dr Mandell's Lifetime Relief System from Arthritis". It's a very interesting book, and since Dr Mandell was one of the foremost allergists, I read his book, and became a believer. He and I became friends, and he helped me learn quite a bit about allergy and sensitivity.

Of course, there are many types of arthritis, and there are different diagnosis made for some. One of the worst types is rheumatoid arthritis which can be crippling indeed. I know, as I got it when Sunny and I were sailing around the Caribbean some years ago. It was so bad that I couldn't haul sails up and down very well.

I had known that rheumatoid arthritis was caused by wheat in many cases, and I knew that I had a wheat problem with weight. So, I abstained from wheat for a month or so. I lost some weight, but the arthritis seemed to get worse.

Then, I remembered that I had tested positive on EPT (End-Point-Titration) for peanuts, but had not found any symptoms at that time. I'd been eating a lot of peanut butter and raisin sandwiches (a favorite) for some time. It's simple to fix on board. Also in checking, I found that the potato chips I was eating were done with peanut oil! I quit all forms of peanuts (reading labels carefully). Within a few weeks, the pain in my hands eased up, and in six months, I was free of this crippler. Since it's"sensitivity" and not a direct allergy, I can even eat a peanut butter sandwich as long as it's not more than once a week or less.

My case illustrates once again the fact that there are no "rules" to allergies or sensitivities. Indeed, "Anything Can Cause Anything" is virtually the only "rule".

While cruising, we met a lovely couple on Long Island in the Bahamas. John (Sunseeker) was a real gentleman who helps all cruisers in the Bahamas and we had become good friends. His wife was really crippled with arthritis that had started with a spider bite about 3 years previously. She could hardly walk at all, had trouble getting out of bed or a chair. I recommended that he go to Dr Von Hilsheimer in Orlando for EPT testing. They did, and the results were good. She had lots of food sensitivities, and was on a very restricted diet for many months, but she could walk and do things again.

There are a few books on wheat or gluten allergy causing rheumatoid arthritis on the market. This would seem to be a good initial "guideline" to anyone who suffers from this crippling disease to try first. Why take dangerous pain-killer type drugs if you can stop the source? That's the orthomolecular theory!

I would also recommend Dr Mandell's book on arthritis to anyone who suffers from this debilitating disease. I would also recommend trying the Caveman Diet and Pulse Test for finding allergens for anyone. It can be found (free) in the "Alternate-Health.com" website.

Next, let's talk about gout. Many MD's call it "gouty arthritis", and relate it to arthritis. Indeed, it also may be an undiagnosed allergy symptom, but I have seen no research on this.

Once again, I have a first person story to tell. I was diagnosed with high uric acid and gout in my 30's (over 40 years ago). I was put on medication, and told that it would be for a lifetime.

Being an egotist, I was determined that I wouldn't be on medication for a lifetime if I could possibly help it. So, I did a lot of reading on gout and gouty arthritis. Somewhere (lost in the mists of time and my memory), I found an "old wives tale" about eating cherries for preventing gouty attacks.

Sounded pretty far out, but I like cherries, so I started to eat a few daily. (The frozen black ones make great snacks.) A sandwich I like, but didn't often eat, is a combination of very sharp cheddar cheese and cherry jam, so I also started to eat those more often, and I started to use cherry jam instead of any other flavors.

It's funny, but when you don't have something wrong, you don't notice the loss as much as if you have it. This is often the case when people start taking the vitamin/mineral recommendations I have given to patients and students. Then, after a few weeks, they often begin to notice small things like acne clearing up, hair and fingernails growing better, etc. Since the gout attacks came and went, I didn't notice the loss of gout for some months, but then I realized that it hadn't come for some time. The old-wives remedy had worked!

We tend to forget that fortunes have been made in the drug industry by following up on some of these old-wife remedies, and isolating the ingredient that makes the drug effective. What it is in cherries, I don't know, but I do know that I have never had an attack of gout again, and when I have recommended it to others both in practice and friendship, it has worked for them as well. When my uric acid was tested recently, it was actually lower than average!

Uric acid comes from several sources, particularly undercooked meat, (beef, lamb and pork) as well as organ meats such as brains or sweetbreads, etc. I eat all of the red meats now (not the organ meats as much) with no restriction. It's been associated with "high" living and rich foods by many. Of course, rich people can afford more expensive meats, etc, so this correlation is found. (Something like the correlation between high cholesterol and rich people, as opposed to poor people with lower cholesterol.)_

I hope this information is useful to you and yours in your search for better health.

Canine Arthritis Risk Factors

As the owner of a dog with arthritis, I know how difficult it can be for you and your dog. Even though arthritis can occur in dogs of any breed or at any age, certain factors can greatly increase the risk of your dog developing cancer.

According to Novartis Animal Health the top factors are:

Genetic predisposition. You may be surprised to learn that up to 70% of certain breeds including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds will eventually be affected with canine arthritis.

Obesity: Overweight dogs tend to develop arthritis years three years earlier than lean dogs so it is important to make sure that you control your dog's weight.

Joint Abnormalities: Conditions such as hip dysplasia put extra stress on animal's joins, increase a dog's risk of arthritis. In addition if your dog has surgery such as a knee replacement surgery, like my Wanda did, your dog will likely develop arthritis around that joint.

Stress and Trauma: Injuries to ligaments, tissue and bones, and constant physically demanding activities also increase the risk by putting pressure on joints. To alleviate this, you can invest in a dog ramp or steps.

Infection: Bacterial, viral and fungal infections, including Ehrlichiosis, Lyme Disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever can affect joints and contribute to arthritis.

If your dog is diagnosed with canine arthritis, you have several options of treatment. Canine arthritis treatments include exercise, diet, supplements, and/or pain control medication. For more information on canine arthritis, visit http://www.allaboutdogcare.com.
