Arthritis Treatments

The best course to solve the problem of arthritis is to take it seriously the moment it crops up. Since arthritis is the next most prevalent disease after heart attack, you can very legitimately suspect your pain to be related to arthritis. So the moment you feel pain anywhere in your body, you should immediately visit your doctor for a checkup.

Besides following your doctor’s and physiotherapist’s advice, do remember it is your own attitude towards life in general and arthritis in particular, that will affect your response to the treatment.

Diagnosis itself can go a long way in reducing the severity of the pain, even though it may not be enough to eliminate the disease altogether. An aggressive approach is necessary to teat arthritis. If you are diagnosed as afflicted with arthritis, your doctor will also be able to tell you the type of arthritis you may be suffering from. This will ensure you get specific treatment. Besides following the advice of your physician, you must also consult your physiotherapist who can guide you regarding exercises to reduce the pain associated with the disease.

Initially you may find that a particular type of treatment or medicine is not suiting you. This is because the nature of pain also may vary from time to time and therefore the medicines or the treatment may have to vary accordingly. Once the type of arthritis has been identified, a reliable treatment may then start.

Arthritis cannot be completely cured and you may have to continue taking medicines and doing exercises for a long time. You may then feel inclined to buy over-the-counter medicines about which you may have come across in the Internet or the newspapers. Keep in mind that these medicines may do you more harm than good.

A person with optimistic and healthy outlook is likely to feel less pain than the one who is always depressed and pessimistic. Excessive anxiety or tension aggravates the pain and weakens your will to fight the disease and survive. A hopeful and joyous attitude helps a lot in reducing pain.

Ways To Maybe Overcome Arthritis

Arthritis is really not just one disease, at least so say many health providers. There are many variations of arthritis, that affect a variety of individuals. For that reason, among others, there is no known cure for the disease we classify as arthritis. But if you suffer from one of those many forms of arthritis, there are some steps you can take to help in the battle against the ailment.

The first and best step, if you have or think you have arthritis, should be to see your doctor. Your doctor or health provider can diagnose the problem, and can suggest the proper treatments. Since there is no one cure for every type of arthritis, knowing more about your problems can help pinpoint what steps should be taken. Your doctor will be able to advise as to what treatments you may need.

Next step, stop smoking! Smoking can cause the immune system and bone structure to break down. It certainly causes arthritic symptoms to worsen, such as irritation and swelling in joints, which can result in infections. Plus, studies show that quitters of smoking had a lower risk of developing arthritis later in life.

Next, start exercising. Stretching exercises such as yoga and tai chi are wonderful for arthritis sufferers. Also, strength conditioners such as swimming or water aerobics work wonders. Even walking for an hour a day can be of tremendous benefit for arthritis pain. Adult Education classes in all types of exercises are often offered, often specifically for arthritis sufferers.

Joining a support group can be both beneficial and fun. There are millions of others who suffer from arthritis, who want very much to share their feelings about it. You can get good tips on what helps and what doesn’t, and get lots of support from caring friends. And there are many groups that meet over the internet, if you can’t travel. You can do a search over the internet for arthritis support groups and find one you like.

One overlooked action that can be quite beneficial is meditation. There are many books and tapes on relaxation and meditation that you can get. Relaxing and meditating can be a wonderful help to unwinding and getting your mind off of the pain.

Let me mention a couple of other, lesser used therapies. A very popular form of an exercise and meditation combination, is Qigong. Qigong combines breathing properly with slow body movements, designed to release the energy stored inside you and improve health. Qigong is in fact practiced in hospitals throughout China, and by many health care providers here. Another Chinese medical practice is acupuncture, which involves inserting needles into certain energy spots of the body, to promote treatment. Even though these practices are not widely accepted in Western medicine, they should be researched for their possibilities, because many people have gotten instant and long-lasting relief from arthritis and other ailments from their use.

None of the above should be regarded as treatments. But employing some of the preceding tips may help in relieving the pain associated with arthritis.

Arthritis - Yes It Can Be Cured

There are over 100 types of arthritis. It is a disease that limits everyday movements such as walking, standing or holding onto a key and trying to open a door. The effects of arthritis range from slight pain, stiffness, and joint swelling, to crippling discomfort.

Changing your diet can be extremely beneficial for arthritis suffering. In fact there are many stories of people enjoying permanent relief from arthritis, simply from changing their diets to one that includes more fruit and vegetables. Many fruits and vegetables contain calcium and antioxidants that can help relieve the painful effects of arthritis. Also, a proper diet, with exercise, will help you lose weight, which will be another great benefit.

Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis. An estimated 20.7 million Americans are affected by this disease.

According to Dr. Hulda Clark “…in osteoarthritis the joints have bacteria living in the deposits left there… More research is necessary to explain this. My suspicion is that there are toxins, like mercury, thallium, cadmium, lead, as well as solvents, distributed through the body, lowering immunity and allowing the tiny larvae to reside there. Once the pathway (routing) to these organs has been established, it continues to be used by other parasites as well. Soon a variety of parasites, their bacteria and viruses, and pollutants are all headed toward these organs”.

Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of cartilage which is what protects the ends of bones from rubbing against each other. As the disease gets worse, along with the loss of cartilage bone spurs and abnormal bone hardening will develop, and create severe pain as there is no more cushioning for the bones. As a result, bones become more brittle and susceptible to fractures.

There are two types of osteoarthritis: primary and secondary. Primary OA is arthritis due to an unhealthy aging process. Secondary osteoarthritis is not so common, and is caused by, injury, previous congenital joint misalignment, trauma, infection, surgery, or prolonged use of medications.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is can be brought on by general wear and tear on the body through the process of living, excess weight, and a lifetime of inadequate diet. Additional causes can be skeletal defects, genetic factors, and hormonal deficiencies (as evidenced by the many women who get osteoarthritis after menopause), toxins, and microbes. There are still other environmental and even dental factors that have also been found to bring on the disease.

Biomechanical changes, especially excessive tissue acidity, can also contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. This is why watching your pH for your acid, alkaline levels is so important, (you can get more information on pH, and acid and alkaline at click on books and products, then the University book store, then click on Alkalife). When joints lose their full range of motion due to stress, injury or lack of activity, the cartilage is decreased. As a result, motion is hindered and the and pain ensues. The body replaces the deterioration in the joints with calcium, which then forms hard, inflexible deposits, which cause joint stiffness.

There are some things you can do to avoid this disease or remove it from your life. One would be to follow Dr. Clark’s recommendations, some of which are below, and more information about her treatment and suggestions can be found in her book the Cure For All Diseases, found at

“Arthritic deposits contain a large amount of phosphates combined with calcium. This calcium came from some other bone, such as the base of your spine or the wrist. Here the bones are getting weaker due to this calcium loss. Calcium was taken out of your bones for the simple purpose of neutralizing the excess phosphate in your diet. Reduce phosphate consumption (meats, soda pop, grains) by half, eating fish, milk, vegetables and fruit instead. Drink three cups of milk a day. If you are allergic to milk, do several liver cleanses, switch brands of milk, use milk digestant, and use it in cooking and baking. Cheese and cottage cheese are not substitutes for milk (the calcium stayed in the whey). Dairy products must be boiled before consuming and should be no less than 2% butter fat. It takes bile to make calcium absorbable, yet bile with less than 2% butter fat does not trigger the gallbladder to empty it's bile at mealtime”.

When joints are painful it is a simple matter to kill the bacteria with an electronic zapper. Treat yourself with a zapper daily until the pain is gone, (more info on the zapper at and in the Cure for All Diseases). Maybe it will stay away, but chances are the bacteria will have a steady source of toxins to become re-infected. Pick up the Cure for All Diseases to learn how not to re-infect yourself.

Know More About Arthritis, and How it Can Affect You

If you’ve heard about arthritis, you would most likely have associated it with older patients, and with a lot of body pain. There are many things about arthritis, however, that make it a unique, and yes, painful disease. Sadly, arthritis is not only confined to the old, and it can actually come in a variety of forms.

The term arthritis itself is derived from the Greek words for joint and inflammation, and covers a group of health conditions that affect the body’s joints. Arthritis has been known and recorded for centuries. The first case was reported to date as far back as 4500 BC. Very simply, arthritis involves swelling of the joints, such that mere movement can cause body pains.

Such joints are sensitive to changes in the weather, and elder patients suffering from arthritis claim that their pains are greatest in the morning, when they first rise. Younger patients can also suffer from arthritis – the arthritic joint pain is not usually the general feature of juvenile arthritis, but the tendency to move, or the refusal to move at all, as in the case of especially young children.

To diagnose arthritis and distinguish it from routine or simple joint pain, physicians conduct a battery of blood tests and x-rays. Some blood tests can check for the presence of certain antibodies, since some forms of arthritis arise out of the body’s immune system launching an attack on itself, making these forms of arthritis autoimmune disorders. X-rays, on the other hands, can show eroding bone or cartilage.

Once arthritis is diagnosed, treatment can proceed. Treatment can come in the form of surgery or drug treatment. Those dealing with arthritis must also undergo occupational and physical therapy sessions, so that they can recover the use of their limbs and keep their blood flow constant. In all types of therapy, doctors ensure that stress on the affected joints is reduced, and pain is successfully managed.

The types of therapy to be used depend on the type of arthritis with which the patient is afflicted. A few common types include the following.

• Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease, where the body’s immune system launches an attack on the joints, then moves on to affect other bodily organs such as the skin, heart, and lungs.

• Psoriatic arthritis is also an autoimmune disorder with symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis. It is common in patients affected by psoriasis, a skin disease.

• Septic arthritis is the wearing away of cartilage due to bacterial accumulation in and attack on the joints. This is usually caused by cuts or gashes that penetrate to the level of the bone, and are left untreated or unwashed.

• Osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing away of cartilage that protects the bone. Because of the great pain they experience, patients with osteoarthritis may refuse to move, causing their muscles to atrophy.

• Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of crystals of uric acid in joints. Those affected with gout have to take a low purine diet, or to stay away from high-protein foods such as sardines and certain types of fish, some mussels, sweatbreads such as kidneys and brains of animals, and alcohol.

If you think you have arthritis, consult a doctor about your condition and have the necessary tests performed. If all signs point to a positive diagnosis, be sure to follow all instructions to the hilt: take all the medications prescribed, avoid all the foods that have to be avoided, and attend all therapy sessions if you are required to do so.

If you know someone with arthritis, or are living with someone afflicted with the disease, take a role in monitoring the patient’s progress by making sure that the patient follows the therapy regimen, or by watching the patient well following surgery. Arthritis is a disease that requires patience, both on the part of the afflicted and the caregiver, so obey all instructions and ask questions if necessary.

Arthritis In Dogs – What You Can Do To Help Your Dog

Treatments for canine arthritis range from natural supplements using chondroitin and glucosamine, to veterinary prescribed drugs such as Rimadyl and Deramaxx. Studies and actual results have shown that natural supplements can be extremely effective in fighting the effects of arthritis in dogs without the potentially dangerous side effects of Rimadyl and Deramaxx. Before deciding which treatment option is best for your dog, you should observe the signs of dog arthritis.

Signs of Dog Arthritis

1. Limping and general reduced activity.

2. Favoring one or both of the front or back limbs.

3. Morning activity or cold weather makes the dog less active.

4. Difficulty rising from a resting position, especially in the morning.

5. Pain to the touch.

6. Reluctance to jump.

If you suspect your dog has arthritis, you should know the different forms or types of arthritis. The most common disorders are listed below.

Types of Dog Arthritis

1. Osteoarthritis – Also known as canine arthritis or dog arthritis, it is the most common form of arthritis and most easily treated. Develops slowly as the dog ages.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis - This is an immune mediated disease and can affect the whole body. Several joints can be affected and the lameness can come and go without notice. Considered a more serious condition than dog osteoarthritis.

3. Degenerative Disc Disease - This is where the discs in the vertebrae develop calcification and become rigid. They become less able to withstand compression. This can lead to a severe injury and paralysis if the discs rupture or become herniated.

4. Stifle Joint Disorder - This is a condition in which the knee and joint becomes unstable. This is usually from a stretched or torn ligament. This can also cause the joint cartilage to become damaged and inflamed.

5. Canine Hip Dysplasia - This is caused by looseness in the socket connecting the thighbone and hipbone. This development usually occurs when the dog is young but can develop at any age. A common sign is to hear a clicking sound when the dog walks.

Treatment Options

As with most areas of stem cell research, the treatment of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is early days. But most researchers suggest that stem cells appear to hold good potential for regenerating damaged arthritic tissue, although they caution that the long term behaviour of implanted stem cells in joints needs further research.

1. Natural Supplements – Most natural supplements use chondroitin and/or glucosamine as its primary ingredient. All of the glucosamine forms originate and are extracted from shellfish. Chrondroitin is derived from animal cartilage. Many products like Free and Easy for Dogs use glucosamine and chondroitin and combine additional supplements to provide a synergistic effect. Besides glucosamine and chondroitin, some of the more popular and effective supplements added are msm, ester-c, and hyaluronic acid. Many studies have been done which have proved the effectiveness of these supplements in humans. Dog owners have also reported many positive outcomes for their dogs using these natural supplements.

2. Rimadyl & Deramaxx - These drugs are obtained by prescription only. They are called NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Rimadyl was introduced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in January 1997 to help treat dogs with inflammation and pain associated with surgery or canine arthritis. It is effective but it must be used with caution. Search Google for "What Your Vet May Not Tell You About Rimadyl" for more detailed information. At a minimum, you need to have blood work done to monitor the liver enzymes to ensure your dog doesn't have a toxic reaction to the drugs.

3. Surgery - Surgery can be an easy decision or a very difficult decision. Often, money is a concern and some surgeries like disc surgery can cost around $3,500. Often, the age of the dog has to be considered when making this decision. And the outlook and prognosis is very important. You do not want the dog to suffer unnecessarily. At the very least, you should only consider surgery after ensuring an accurate diagnosis has been made. This may involve taking x-rays and a myelogram. A myelogram is done by injecting dye in the spinal canal to enable your doctor to detect abnormalities of the spine, spinal cord, or surrounding structures.

Summary - Dog Arthritis can be a very debilitating disease if left untreated. Dog owners should pay close attention to their animals and take prompt action when symptoms are noticed. Often a natural supplement is all that is needed to help your dog. Sometimes more aggressive treatments are needed such as surgery. The most important thing is to notice and diagnose the problem and then decide what treatment is best for your dog.

Arthritis Pain Relief - A Glimmer Of Hope on The Horizon For A Cure

Stem Cell Research - Will This Be The Long Awaited Cure For Arthritis?

For anyone desperate for arthritis pain relief, stem cells may be the answer to the long awaited cure for arthritis. Now I am not talking about embryonic stem cells. This can be a controversial issue and is best left to other forums.

Rather I am talking about using a patient’s own stem cells to grow new tissue which can be used to replace that damaged by arthritis.

According to The Australian Readers Digest (March 2006) a research team at Australia’s Newcastle Hunter Medical Research Institute is conducting clinical trials on severely ill coronary patients. In the trials, bone marrow is extracted from the patient and specialist stem cells are isolated from the marrow. These stem cells are then cultured into billions of cells over a period of six to eight weeks and then injected back into the patient’s heart muscle to prompt new blood vessel growth. Some success is also reported in restoring sight, growing skin and regenerating livers. But the big news for arthritis sufferers is that Genzyme Biosurgery in Massachusetts has grown human knee cartilage in a laboratory.

How does this impact on arthritis sufferers?

Because stem cells appear to have the ability to regenerate damaged tissue and bone it appears that the long awaited arthritis pain relief cure may be more than a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

“Stem Cell Therapies” report that some types of stem cells are having “significant effects on a variety of autoimmune type of problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus …” etc.

So although it appears that although there are still some years of research ahead, arthritis sufferers at long last have some hope that arthritis pain relief is in sight.

In the meantime it’s important to do what you can now to help yourself. Glucosamine is reported to be having good results by helping to rebuild damaged cartilage.

Maintaining mobility is especially important for arthritis sufferers and exercise should be part of your daily routine.

Eating the correct diet is important as it has been suggested that some foods can trigger arthritis pain while others may provide arthritis pain relief. A correct diet will also lead to loss of excess weight, taking pressure off arthritic joints.
