What is this chronic condition that causes inflammation, swelling and distortion of the joints? Medically speaking, arthritis is a name that covers many inflammatory conditions of the joints and muscles, extremely painful symptoms that make moving, sitting and sleeping difficult, even impossible at times. Often as not, the only relief is from pain-killing drugs, steroids, etc. Sadly, these drugs lose their effect after a while and the patient is no better off.

Even allowing for the fact that a tendency towards arthritis, rheumatism, etc., can be inherited, incorrect diet and lifestyle are also contributory factors, lending a great deal of credence to the saying "We are what we eat and do".

Although millions of dollars have been spent on clinical research into arthritic conditions, we seem to be no further forward in our quest to find a cure. But all is not gloom and doom, for in the alternative field of medicine there is, at last, a strong possibility of a breakthrough. Certainly, ongoing research carried out by many experts in this field, including myself, have borne this out, often producing quite remarkable results.

In nigh on forty years as a psychologist and nutritional therapist, I have found that stress is an important factor in causing and prolonging chronic ill health. It's of the utmost importance, therefore, that we learn to recognise stress and learn how to tackle it head on. Believe it or not, most people don't know they are chronically stressed. They are not aware of the important role their emotions play in making them ill or keeping them well.

In recent years, scientific research has learned a great deal about how the mind affects the body, for good or ill. It is imperative, therefore, that we learn how to control our fears by separating the ones which are based on fact and those that are figments of our imagination. In other words, "never cross a bridge until you come to it", as the saying goes.

Believe it or not, a faulty or inadequate diet and some of the common foods we eat can also stress our body. For example, few of us realise that for the most part we are addicted to salt. Salt is a stimulant which hits the adrenal glands causing the body to go into a stress reaction. Just like sugar, salt gives us a 'high', consequently, we consume far too much of both these substances.

Because our blood is naturally 80% alkaline, we need alkaline forming foods such as fruit, vegetables, yoghurt and certain seeds to keep it that way. An all-acid meal such as egg on toast with coffee uses up calcium and other minerals in our body's attempt to restore the alkaline balance. I have always found that it is difficult to heal arthritis in an acid body, therefore, our intake should be 80% alkaline and 20% acid.

From the aforementioned basic examples, you can see how important it is to incorporate psychological and dietary management techniques when treating arthritic, rheumatism and other chronic inflammatory conditions. By so-doing, mental and physical improvement can be quite amazing in many cases.

The holistic approach (treating the whole body) is, in my view, essential if an improvement or cure for arthritis is to be achieved. Treating the symptoms will lead nowhere and the misery and suffering will continue unabated as sure as night follows day!

The advantage of 'alternative' methods of treatment is that they can be used in conjunction with 'allopathic' (conventional) regimes. Always remember, even though you may have been told by your doctor or consultant that there is nothing more that can be done for your condition, this is from a conventional, drug-orientated viewpoint. Sadly, this somewhat narrow-minded and thoughtless statement often results in a feeling of hopelessness in many patients who consult me for the first time. Please remember, there is always something that can be done and as an 'alternative' practitioner I know this is true- without a shadow of doubt!

Arthritis Joint Pain - Protecting Your Joints

Arthritis, one of the most common disorders that can affect anyone is actually a complex disorder comprising several conditions, all of which sharing one common symptom: arthritis joint pain. There are over a hundred different types of arthritis joint pain but the most common are osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and gout.

However, this does not have to be the case with you.

For most patients suffering from arthritis joint pain, living with this kind of condition means a life-long task punctuated with nothing but agony. While it is true that most forms of arthritis are irreversible (as it is impossible to grow back a cartilage), there are steps that you can take in order to minimize the pain that is usually associated with this debilitating disease.

Protect Your Joints

Although arthritis can strike anyone at any time of their life, most cases of arthritis occurs in people who are older. Aging appears to be a major contributive factor to arthritis joint pains - a fact that is understandable as everyone goes through a considerable amount of wear and tear in their joints as they grow older.

Age also causes toxic waste circulation in the blood, dead cells, and liquid can accumulate in the various joints and cause inflammation and pain. If inflammation continues it can cause damage to your joints. In some cases the cartilage coating on the bone ends, wears down and the joints then rub, bone to bone creating extreme pain.

By using fatty acids which provide lubrication for the joints, the joints will not wear down as much as a result less inflammation and less pain. Some recommend oils are:

- Borage Oil
- Primrose Oil
- NKO Oil

You will benefit from these oils by feeling less joint stiffness and pain in the morning.

In order to prevent further damage and worse pain, be extra careful as you go about your daily routine. Below are some tips to help you protect your joints, recommend by the Mayo Clinic:

- Save your weaker joints and use the strongest joint instead. For instance, you can carry things with your palm open. That way, you can distribute the weight equally over your forearm. Also, instead of lifting things off the counter or workbench, you can just slide them along the surface.

- Save your little finger. Don't put too much stress on your little finger by moving your hands in such a way as to push the other fingers toward your little finger. Instead, try brushing bread crumbs off the table with the palm facing you and the little finger resting on the table.

- Avoid stressing your thumb and fingers by making a tight fist or holding items for too long. You can do this by holding a book, mug, or other things in the palm of your hand, instead of holding them with your fingers. If you've been reading a book for some time, use a book holder instead of continually supporting the book with your fingers.

- Exercise those joints. Freedom of motion is one of the things that you may have to forsake if you suffer from arthritis joint pain. The longer you suffer, the shorter range of movement you will have at your disposal. You can avoid this by moving your joints through their full pain-free range of motion. Do this at least once a day and observe the results.

- Learn to understand arthritis joint pain. Of course, if you have arthritis, it is most likely that you will experience arthritis joint pain. However, try to distinguish between arthritis joint pain and pain that results from overusing a joint. When you are able to do this, you can determine what specific activity that caused you joint pain and avoid doing it in the future.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. What is the Difference?

The term arthritis actually describes over 100 related conditions, but among these the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is mainly confined to people over the age of fifty.

There is a huge difference between these two diseases so we'll go into the main ones here.

Exceptions to this are people who have put a large strain on their joints for a prolonged period of time, for example athletes, or those whose jobs demand a lot of repetitive physical movements, for example carpenters and even computer keyboard users.

Osteoarthritis then is a disease of wear and tear. The cartilage that supports the joints becomes broken down by excessive use, causing the joints to become stiff and sore. Osteoarthritis can be painful but it is not life threatening and there are many natural ways that we can help keep pain under control.

Those suffering with osteoarthritis are usually prescribed anti inflammatory pain killers, the disadvantage is that these can sometimes have a negative effect on our general health and at best only help the symptoms while doing nothing to arrest the progress of the disease.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a different disease altogether. It can attack any age group, even manifesting in children where it is commonly known as Juvenile Arthritis or JRA. Rheumatoid Arthritis is caused by an immune disorder, in which the immune system attacks parts of the body including joint tissue. Typical symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are pain, inflammation, swelling and heat. Rheumatoid arthritis can go into remission and then flare up again which can be very frustrating!

Why this happens is not clear, however rheumatoid arthritis can occur after a viral disease or after a period of intense stress. A person suffering with RA will have the 'Tumor Necrosis Factor' in their system which can be found using a simple testing, Mainstream medicine claims there is no known cure for either disease, however significant progress has been made in alternative medicine with sometimes amazing results.

Exercise has multiple benefits for arthritis sufferers. It prevents stiffening of the joints while strengthening the muscles. Exercise also releases endorphins (nature's natural pain killers) into the system. Swimming is great as it puts no strain on sore joints. However a weight bearing exercise, such as walking helps to keep our bones strong.

A positive attitude is always a good idea. It takes practice but with patience we can train our thoughts to support us. This benefits our health as well as other areas of our lives.

And finally the modern enemy, stress, can exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis. A high level of stress can negatively affect out health in so many ways. Yoga can be very calming and also helps to stretch the muscles. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation will help a lot too.

In conclusion, no matter what form of arthritis is causing the problem, natural remedies go a long way to make us feel better. Light exercise, a good diet, a positive attitude and natural medication will make our lives easier. Give it a try!

Natural Remedies for Arthritis

Arthritis is beginning to affect people at a much younger age these days, and if the disease runs in your family, you'll want to do all you can to prevent the onset of arthritis. Here are some natural remedies that you may want to try, whether you're trying to prevent arthritis, or are suffering with symptoms.

Studies have show that bee venom is an effective natural remedy that can relieve arthritis symptoms and help to prevent the disease, since it can lubricate the joints and improve the range of motion in the arms and fingers. Another natural remedy, cat's claw, has also been known to decrease inflammation and eliminate discomfort. Cat's claw can also treat tendonitis, which is a common side effect of arthritis. Since fluid tends to build up around the joints, herbs like cat's claw can help to drain the toxic fluids from the body if taken regularly.

You can also change your lifestyle that will serve as natural remedies and ensure that you feel better and reduce the complications that can come along with arthritis. For instance, simple changes or adjustments to your diet can significantly improve arthritis. Including more green vegetables in the diet, such as kale and kelp (seaweed) normalize bodily fluids and increase joint movement, and eating more foods with calcium and B vitamins can strengthen the bones.

Today, there are many solutions that can be solved with natural remedies and they are successful to improve a person's life in many ways. But, If you're thinking of taking natural remedies to treat your arthritis, be sure to talk to your physician about using alternative medicine to treat your condition. It may be a good idea to take only one type of medication at a time, since traditional and natural medicines may decrease the effects of each medicine. Be sure to take your natural supplements slowly, and increase the dosage as your body gets used to the 'medication.'

Learn The Basic Facts About Arthritis

Inflammations of joints in any part of the body are commonly referred to as arthritis. It is one of the most common diseases faced by the people worldwide. There are over hundred varieties of this rheumatic disease that cause pain, stiffness, and swelling mainly in joints and affecting other parts of the body in some cases. Stiffness, swelling and of course lot of pain and dysfunction of joints are the symptoms of this type of arthritis. Other parts of the body can also be affected by Rheumatoid arthritis. a blood test can only tell whether one has Rheumatoid arthritis. It is by far the more serious of all types of arthritis.

Gout is another common type of arthritis. It is body's reaction to needle-like crystals of uric acid that accumulates in various joints of the body. Like other types of arthritis, gout also causes inflammation, swelling, and pain in the affected joint. Big toes are the commonest targets of gout in your body.

The anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly advised for the patients of arthritis. They not only control the pain, they also reduce inflammation. When inflammation is reduced, the degeneration process of the joints diminishes. In its mild form, arthritis is treated by aspirin, the most popular anti inflammatory drug. A new generation of medicine called NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) is increasingly used in the arthritis treatments.

In addition to medications, there are other natural methods for getting temporary relief from the pains of arthritis. Hot pack in any form for 15 to 20 minutes thrice daily is particularly helpful in reducing the pains of arthritis.
