Golf and Arthritis

Good news! If you're an arthritis sufferer, you don't have to give up your golf game! In fact, playing golf can add strength and mobility to your body overall and improve your range of motion.Research shows that one of the best treatments for osteoarthritis is exercise. It can improve mood and outlook, decrease pain, increase flexibility, improve the heart and blood flow, maintain weight, and promote general physical fitness.

Now here's the key - you are probably going to need some special products to make golf a little easier on your joints.

Usually, osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis) comes on slowly. Early in the disease, joints may ache after physical work or exercise. Osteoarthritis can occur in any joint. Most often it occurs at the hands, hips, knees, or spine, all those areas used in playing the game of golf.No worries, though. Golf actually helps increase your range of motion and your balance as well. And the walking, if you can do it, will benefit your health in numerous ways. In short, golf is one of the perfect exercises for someone with osteoarthritis!

Try using a lower compression ball.Golf shoes without spikes will likely be more comfortable for you.Ask your local golf store specialist about the latest helps for making golfing easier on your joints. New products are coming out all the time.

Shoes and Insoles

Always warm up before you play. Do some basic stretches, take some practice swings. Start out swinging about half strength. Never try to hit the ball too hard. This one goes for everyone - not just folks with arthritis. It's accuracy that counts!

Using tees will help.

Drink water while you're playing. (again, a tip for everyone)

If you feel tired, listen to your body and rest a bit. It's not a mortal sin to play less than 18 holes. The key is to enjoy the game.

Now, if you're feeling sore after play, here are some things to try.

· Take a warm shower. · Do some gentle stretching exercises. · Use an ice pack on the sore area. · Rest the sore joint. · Try magnetic therapy. · Try to keep your weight down. Too much weight can make your knees and hips hurt

If playing golf causes pain that lasts for more than 1 hour, it's too much. Work with your physical therapist or doctor to adjust your game when you notice any of the following signs of too much exercise:

Unusual or persistent fatigue

Increased weakness

Decreased range of motion

Increased joint swelling

Continuing pain (pain that lasts more than 1 hour after exercising)

Really, when it comes right down to it, playing golf (along with warming up for your game with range of motion exercises) may be just what the doctor orders for arthritis help!

Hot Tub Arthritis Pain Relief

Hot tubs have been around for centuries for relaxation as well as for medicinal purposes.

If you have back pain, a tub can help you relieve the aches and pains you feel by loosening the muscles and massaging them.

Hot tubs are great tools to use for a variety of medical conditions. If you have back pain, this is especially true because the hot water will provide a soothing area to stretch and will also massage and loosen the muscles to help you be more flexible and pain free.Physicians are even recognizing the benefits and are starting to recommend using a hot tub for people with chronic back pain...

The doctor may also recommend the twice daily hot tub sessions be a certain temperature and duration to ensure maximum relief.

Hot tub Hydrotherapy:Before starting any exercise program or spa therapy, first check with your doctor.

Depending on your situation, your physician may have certain exercises to do or a regular regimen that may differ from others based on your individual needs. The first thing in the morning, a soak in the hot tub and some water exercise provides a safe and pleasant way to warm up the joints and increase freedom of movement. It also loosens up tight muscles from the previous evening's rest. A maximum of a half hour in the spa is usually sufficient to get the needed exercises in and loosen up the joints.

At the end of the day, when, as the body cools down, stiffness and pain may again set in. The end of the evening is ideal for another half hour session in the hot tub. Instead of exercises, though, relaxation and use of the hot tub's jets to passively massage the muscles ease the body and mind.Hot Tub Hydromassage:Hydromassage uses the jets of the hot tub or spa to passively buffet aching muscles. If arthritis is in the joints, how is this beneficial?Even though the origin of the pain is within the joints themselves, the muscles attached to those bones and moving those joints often set up in spasm. Though not as pronounced as the "charlie horse" some get at night in the calf muscle, nevertheless, the stiff spasm may cause significant pain to be felt in the joint.

Heat and the gentle massage action of the jets in the short session in the hot tub relax the spasming, stiff muscles. As those muscles relax, pressure on the joint is reduced relieving the pain within the elbow, hip, knee or other joints. Massage therapists agree that 90% of most all pain, though originating elsewhere, is actually perceived in the muscles' response.Once the muscles are relieved of spasm, gentle water exercise while still in the tub proves beneficial. The water's buoyancy itself provides a low impact arena in which to exercise.

Blood vessels expand, increasing circulation, and removing toxins that have built up causing soreness in the muscles.

This combination of heat, gentle massage and low impact exercises in the hot tub allows the arthritis sufferer to move more freely and with less pain. It improves the remainder of the day or brings ease for the remainder of the night.

Relieve Your Pain, with a Better Arthritis Diet

People who suffer from arthritis are always looking for ways to relieve their pain. One way to ease or even prevent it is through an arthritis diet. There are some arthritis diets that some people will swear by, but have never been proven to make a difference. There are some diets that make a definite difference according to health experts.

First we'll take a look at some arthritis diets where there's little or no evidence that they actually make a difference.

One of the most common arthritis diets is to eliminate potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and most peppers. While the diet won't do any harm, it hasn't been proven to affect arthritis at all.

Another arthritis diet seeks to reduce the acids in one's body eliminating sugar, coffee, red meat, most grains, nuts, and citrus fruits. It's intended to be followed for just one month. People may feel better because they lose weight which reduces the stress on their joints, but again there is no evidence to support this. It also excludes many sources of vitamin C which is essential in fighting arthritis.

Drinking green tea has been shown to reduce the effects of rheumatoid arthritis in mice, but there are no conclusive results on human studies yet. Shark cartilage is supposed to relieve arthritis. Animal and lab studies show promise, but there are no human studies to support this yet.

Not let's take a look at some arthritis diets that have been shown to work. Switching fats can reduce inflammation. Eating fats found in red meat and poultry have actually been shown to increase inflammation. Switching to cold water fish can help reduce the inflammation.

Using corn, safflower, and sunflower oils also helps. Another arthritis diet is the ASU (avocado-soybean unsaponifiable). It has been shown to relieve osteoarthritis, stimulate cartilage repair, and lessen a patient's need of NSAIDs to control pain.

Ginger has been shown to ease pain and inflammation as well as protect the stomach from gastrointestinal effects from taking NSAIDs.

Glucosamine is a supplement that relieves pain in some patients with osteoarthritis. It helps the body rebuild cartilage, but can take up to two months to see the effects. If you are allergic to shellfish, check with your doctor before taking this as it is derived from crab, lobster, or shrimp shells. Before taking any supplements talk with your doctor as some can interfere with or worsen side effects from your medications.

Of course the best arthritis diet is a good old-fashioned well balanced diet. Eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables, and go easy on fats and cholesterol. A heart healthy diet is especially important to patients with rheumatoid arthritis as studies have shown a link between this disease and heart failure.

Vitamin C is good for repairing body tissue. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium, build bone mass, and prevents bone loss. Calcium helps strengthen your bones. If you are on medication, ask your doctor if he/she recommends taking vitamins. Some medications can create vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

When choosing your arthritis diet, be sure to talk with your physician as different types of arthritis have different needs.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - An Introduction

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most prevalent forms of arthritis. The term 'arthritis' is actually a generic term for a couple of hundred different diseases that include joint inflammation and pain as symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis happens to be one of the most potentially debilitating forms of arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in many parts of the body, and not just the joints. This disease can affect other body parts including the heart, lungs, and blood. Roughly 2.1 million Americans have rheumatoid arthritis, that is about one percent of all American adults. The disease is caused by an inflammation of the lining of a joint, which can cause the patient to experience stiffness and pain in the joint, along with swelling, a feeling of warmth, and a red coloring to the skin. Interestingly, inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis may also affect the salivary glands, tear ducts, and the linings of the heart and lungs.

The disease can be life-long. Those afflicted with this disease can experience waves of severity ranging from periods of very little pain to intense suffering. The cycles may shift with little to no warning. The disease generally occurs to those between ages 20 and 50. Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include swelling, tenderness, redness, and a warmness in a joint. Sometimes the feeling may be prevalent in corresponding joints. For example, if one has a problem in their left elbow, their right elbow may also feel the same discomfort if rheumatoid arthritis is present. If afflicted, the pain and tenderness usually lasts for long periods of time, and the afflicted person may feel similar symptoms in other parts of the body.

The body's immune system actually causes the disease.. Sometimes the immune system may mistakenly treat joint tissue as if it were an invader. When that happens, the body does its best to destroy the joint tissue as it would a bacterial infection. This attack by the immune system creates the symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The initial cause has not been discovered yet, but researchers in the field contend that heredity and genetics may play important roles.

When diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis, doctors frequently use a blood test that verifies the presence of an antibody known as the 'rheumatoid factor'. If this antibody is found, there is an excellent chance that the patient has rheumatoid arthritis. Between 70 and 90 percent of all rheumatoid arthritis sufferers test positive for the factor, so the test can provide an accurate assessment of a patient's risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Doctors may also perform x-rays to see exactly how much of the joint tissue has been. If you experience symptoms last for two weeks or longer, it would be wise to talk to your doctor.

The Cheaper Arthritis Treatment: Improve Your Diet To Prevent Or Cure Arthritis

Arthritis is often associated with people in their 50s or older. But nowadays, more and more younger people are showing signs of this joint-related disease. What exactly are the causes of joint inflammation and what are the best arthritis treatment? Inflammation of the joints can result from previous injuries, like tibial plateau fracture, which affects certain sensitive cartilages and muscle tissues. A person can also develop joint swelling and pain if two or more of his or her family members have gout or any related illness. Needless to say, age is also one of the most significant factors in determining the onset of swelling of the joints. As a person gets older, his or her bones tend to be weaker and more fragile as one of the results of the natural laws of aging. But this doesn't necessarily mean teenagers or the twenty-somethings can be complacent. There are cases of brittle joints among younger age brackets because of extraneous determinants like weight and existing illness.

It is understandable that obese or overweight persons have greater tendencies of exhausting or wearing out their bones. Since weight is identified as a factor in causing joint inflammation, doctors suggest arthritis treatment can be in the form of improving one's diet. There are specific diets, like meals heavy in unsaturated fat and cholesterol, that make a person even more susceptible in experiencing joint pain and swelling. On the other hand, foods rich in certain minerals and vitamins are one's best ally in preventing early signs of bone inflammation. Choose foods with high nutritional value and specifically contain Vitamins K and E, which promote healthier bones. To alleviate inflammation, a person should boost his or her intake of vitamins B12 and B6. If beneficial minerals like zinc and copper are not usually found on your daily meal plan, take health supplements that offer these specific nutrients.

There are also certain medications supposedly aimed at combating arthritis. Some of these drugs don't come without hazardous side effects so it is still best to follow natural remedies to prevent or cure joint inflammation. Arthritis treatment need not cost someone a fortune. The safest and surest way is still through sticking to a healthy diet, or even particular exercise routines, or whatever a doctor advised a patient to do. One should not wait to get older before he starts to take care of his bones and joints. A person may not realize the importance of bone health until he experiences the premature tell-tale signs of joint swelling and inflammation.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Helpful Medications

There is an array of prescription arthritis medications which doctors can offer to help with rheumatoid arthritis. While none of these arthritis medications cure arthritis, they can bring pain relief, relieve symptoms, and even slow down the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce pain and deal with inflammation. These drugs may be pressed into service as an arthritis medicine and may be obtained over the counter and in prescription form. (Most everyone is aware of aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium.) The only down side to these arthritis medications is they may cause stomach problems, such as bleeding and indigestion. They can also raise blood pressure in a person and make them prone to fluid retention.

COX-2 inhibitors are a kind of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which do not cause as much harm to the stomach. This class of arthritis medication works by suppressing an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which is involved in inflammation. However, fluid retention and elevated blood pressure may result as side effects of COX-2 inhibitors. Reports are also coming in that those who are treated with this class of drug may be at an increased risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Corticosteroids are arthritis medications which may reduce pain and inflammation. They can also slow down the damage to joints brought on by rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, many arthritis sufferers who take corticosteroids report they feel significantly improved. However, after some time the effectiveness of corticosteroids may diminish. There is also the possibility of suffering severe side effects such as diabetes, weight gain, and decreased bone density, after long-time use of corticosteroids.

It is vital to see a doctor at the first signs of rheumatoid arthritis. While modern medicine has not been able to find a cure for arthritis, they are making strides in pain relief and slowing down the progression rate of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. Immunosuppressants can be prescribed as an arthritis medication to help control the immune system. Without such treatment, the immune system in rheumatoid arthritis patients is not balanced and it is not controlled. TNF blockers are sometimes used together with an immunosuppressant. TNF blockers operate by blocking the protein which inflames the joints. Those on TNF blockers have reported that pain was reduced and stiffness alleviated.

Those diagnosed early with rheumatoid arthritis can be prescribed arthritis medications known as disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. These drugs slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. So, if the arthritis is discovered early, much damage to the joints can be forestalled.

Doctors are agreeing that there have been significant results through alternative and natural medicines.

Here you can see personal stories from arthritis patients and you can discover what arthritis remedies are working for them.
