Allergies and asthma can be very disturbing when you are in an attack. You will want to make sure that you not only avoid certain triggers, but you will need to be prepared for an attack. When you know that you are at a high risk for an allergy and asthma attack, you should have your medicine on hand. Sometimes people who have air-borne allergies need to have a good supply of medicine in the fall and spring seasons. This is because it is the perfect time for your allergies to act up.
Usually, an attack will begin in the early morning or it will be at night. If you are going out at these times, make sure that you either take a pill before heading out, or carry your medicine in your pocket or purse. As for asthma victims, you are at risk for an asthma attack whenever you plan on doing some strenuous activities or when you come in contact with an allergen.
Rather you have asthma, allergies, or both you need to carry your medicine on you or in your bag. It is hard to predict when you'll have an allergy or asthma attack. Allergy attacks can make you feel weak, sick, and irritable. By finding immediate relief you will be able to accomplish more in your day. For any with asthma, it is extremely important to have your inhaler on you at all times. Stress, allergies, or activity could cause you to have an attack. It is hard to predict when an attack will happen and why. It is best for you to always be prepared.
As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.
Dog Allergies
Dogs are like humans in that they also suffer from allergies. The most common symptom of dog allergies is itching, but the respiratory tract may also be affected, which could lead to coughing, sneezing, and/or wheezing. There are also cases where the eyes and the nose are affected by dog allergies, developing a discharge, or the digestive system becomes troubled, causing vomiting or diarrhea.
These dog allergies differ in their symptoms and treatment used.
In the United States, approximately 20% of dogs suffer some type of allergy, including atopic dermatitis, flea allergy, food allergy, inhalant allergy, contact allergy, or bacterial allergy. Below are brief discussions of each of these dog allergies.
Atopic Dermatitis
One of the many dog allergies is known as canine atopic dermatitis. The condition is caused by the dog’s immune system hypersensitivity to common substances in the environment, like dust mites or molds.
Atopic dermatitis usually occurs during the first two years of a dog’s life. One of the veritable first signs of this type of dog allergies is excessive grooming, with licking or chewing of the paws, abdomen, and hind quarters. You can also check the following areas for signs:
Flea Allergy
Out of all dog allergies, flea allergy dermatitis is the most common. The allergy is actually caused, not by the flea itself, but by their saliva, which causes the allergic reaction. Symptoms may be reduced through strict flea control regimen, but you should be careful that the flea preparations used are not harmful to the dog.
Inhalant Allergy
Dogs, like humans, may also be allergic to pollens (tree, grass, and weed), dust mites, molds, and chemicals. Inhalant dog allergies are typically caused by any or all of these environmental factors.
Pure bred or mutts can acquire inhalant allergies, but there are certain breeds that are especially susceptible to react:
This type of dog allergies exhibit symptoms like scratching, biting, chewing at the feet and constant licking.
Food Allergy
Dogs can become allergic to food they’ve been eating for years. That’s why many people overlook the possibility of a food allergy. Unlike other common dog allergies, food allergy only accounts for 10 percent of allergy problems in dogs. The foods that dogs often cannot tolerate include:
There are several other dog allergies, of course, that it’s nearly impossible to name all of them. For more information on the symptoms and what you can do to help your dog, contact your local veterinarian for some advice.
A single mold spore is a tiny, microscopic little thing that usually thrives in damp places. Yet for its diminutiveness in size, mold spores can be deadly to people who have allergic reactions to them.
And while mold spores often stick to walls and surfaces, because they are so tiny, they can easily float in the air when disturbed. A person with mold allergies can easily breathe these mold spores, permitting them to pass through the nasal passages and to the lungs, triggering an allergic reaction.
Mold allergies are even more common than pollen allergies. That’s because pollen allergies are often seasonal, like ragweed during the fall, grass pollen in the spring, and cedar fever in December or January. With mold allergies, however, it’s different. Molds can affect you at night, with little regard to seasons. And while pollens are released during the day when sunlight dries the pollen and the wind picks them up and spreads them around, mold cannot tolerate sunlight and hence only goes off during the night. The process is called “sporulation,” which is different from pollen’s pollination.
The highest mold counts occur in our homes around 2:00 a.m. because that’s the time when spores blow out of our air-conditioning systems and spread throughout the house. The first thing that happens during the onset of mold allergies is swelling in the mucus membrane. This is then followed by the release of adrenaline, your emergency allergy hormone. The release of adrenaline is also the reason why you suddenly find yourself waking up in the wee hours of the morning and wondering why you can’t breathe through one nostril.
To control allergic reaction to molds, the first step is to recognize the triggers. Because once you do, you’ll at least know when to avoid them. You can also have an allergist test you for positive response to mold. However, the problem with this is that there are far too many species and mutant varieties of molds that it’s difficult to test you for every single one of them. One thing you should know if you have mold allergies is that molds need a place to grown on and a source of nutrients. Damp places are their personal favorites, but the dust in your air conditioning system may also provide them with nutrients to support them.
Here are common places where mold colonies may thrive:
Another place where molds may grow is your car. Researchers have noticed that many people suffered mold allergies in their cars with symptoms like sinus problems, asthma, drippy nose, and headaches. The cause of this was attributed to leaky windows or doors, often the result of aged weather stripping. This causes water to leak in and wet the carpet of upholstery, contributing to mold growth.
Food Allergies
Food allergies are the worst type of allergies to have. You have to watch what you eat and read labels of everything that you purchase from the super-market. Even if it is just a little bit of the food or product, you can have a full-blown attack and your throat will swell. It is important to avoid these types of attacks as much as possible, because most food allergens will cause your throat and passageways to swell and this will stop your breathing. If you do not receive medical attention quickly, it is quite possible to suffocate due to an allergen.
If you experience an allergy attack for the first time and do not understand what could have caused it, you can go to your family doctor and then they will help you to find the trigger point. This will help you in the future when you are trying to avoid the food. Your allergy attack experience will differ from person to person. This is because everyone's immune system is different.
You may just swell in the face or you could very well have you air passageways close up. Your doctor will help you with your first experience by running multiple tests to see what may have caused the reaction. This procedure can be painful and time-consuming. During the process, they usually take a patch of skin, usually on your back, and inject a bit of the allergen. This will cause a reaction to the specific area and will tell the doctor everything that you are allergic to.
How to avoid an attack: you need to do severeal things. First you need to identify what allergies that you have. Then you have to cut those items out of your life for good. No matter how much you like the allergen, like crawfish, you must avoid from eating it. You need to understand that this will control a piece of your diet. You will start to read labels of the food you eat and purchase. This is important to people who are allergic to wheat products or dairy products. They are common ingredients that can be used for practically anything. This is why you must read your labels.
Allergy testing
Almost everyone has some type of allergy that may vary depending the on the season. The spring and fall seasons are extremely difficult for those who have an air-borne allergy. Air-borne allergies are from pollens and spores in the air. In the winter, you will find more dark, damp places that are perfect for mold to inhibit and grow in. In the winter months, mold will grow quickly and dust will lie more quickly as well. Most people have a hard time controlling their allergies so they seek medical help. You should try to keep your home as clean as possible for the fact that dust and molds are a common allergy.
If you have asthma, it is important that you understand how necessary your medicine is. If you have a really bad asthma attack and you do not have your medicine or inhalers, you could be harmed. During an asthma attack your muscles begin to tighten and your air-passageways become narrower. This does not allow enough oxygen to your lungs. If you have a small child or teenager, it is best to make sure that there is inhaler in their bag and supply the school for an inhaler. This way, just in case your child doesn't have one, they can go to their teacher or school nurse and find relief.
There are also everyday allergies that do not stay with just a season. They are pet allergies and food allergies. Pet allergies come from having contact with the dog or cat or when you are in the presence of the animal or owner. The hair and dander may make your hands to break out in a rash, or you may not be able to control your breathing because of the pets. You may have your passageways narrowed because of pet hair or dander. Food allergies are the worse allergies to have. They can be extremely deadly if proper medical attention is not sought.
When you need to be tested for an allergy, you can go see your family physician or doctor. He will run a series of tests that will determine what allergies, if any, do you have. When you visit the doctor, you may want to generate a list of things that it could possibly be. An allergy test consists of many mini-tests in one.
The doctor will usually choose a place on your back to use as a testing spot. They will inject the area with the allergen and observe any changes. This is extremely time consuming and can be painful. Other ways to test is through a blood test. For certain allergens, you will be given a blood test to tell the doctor rather or not you are specifically allergic to something. This is only hopeful when you have narrowed your list of possibilities.
