Allergies Articles, Tips and Information

Allergy Products

Allergies are prevalent these days, not only in children but in adults as well. In fact, according to the FAAN (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network) the prevalence of allergic reactions to peanuts has doubled over a period of five years. That’s only as far as peanuts are concerned. In a separate study, the number of people having allergic reactions to latex has also gone through a significant increase through the years.

When we think of air pollution, we usually associate it with outdoor air.

An allergy is a condition wherein a problematic immune system overreacts to certain foreign substances that are otherwise not harmful. As our body’s immune defense system attacks these substances, the resultant release of vast amounts of antibodies leads to symptoms commonly associated with allergies, such as itchiness, breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, swelling, rashes, etc.

One way of preventing allergies is to use allergy products designed to help you avoid allergens found in our environment. Check below for a list of our top picks:

Air Filters or Purifiers

Allergy products such as air filters and air purifiers will greatly help in reducing allergens that can cause asthma or asthma-like symptoms, such as difficulty in breathing, nasal congestion, respiratory swelling, and the like.

There are five basic types of air-related allergy products:

Carpet Cleaners

Indoor allergens are not only found in the air, but in every surface. Carpets, especially if you keep pets, are very conducive to allergens such as dust mites and animal danders, which are dry cells shed from the skin of your pets.

Healthy cat food - great articles and products for cats and kittens!

One good allergy product is a carpet cleaner. Reduce you exposure to indoor allergens by keeping your carpet clean and free from particles that you are allergic to.

Home Water Treatment Systems

One of the things that we often take for granted is water. When we turn on the tap, we expect water that is clean, safe and suitable for household tasks. In truth, no water is 100% pure. All water contains contaminants such as minerals, gases, bacteria, metals, and chemicals. But while many of these contaminants are harmless, there are some that may adversely affect your health and in some people, cause allergic reactions.

An allergy product designed to decrease your exposure to contaminated water is a home water treatment system. With this allergy product, you can control water quality problems, such as hardness, corrosivity, foaming, staining or bad tastes, smell or color.

Here is a list of possible treatment and conditioning methods for your home water:

Cat Allergies

When you’re allergic to something, it’s only sane and rational to avoid that thing that causes your allergies. But if you’re a cat-lover like me, you couldn’t be any farther from being sane and rational. It’s good thing then that the symptoms of cat allergies are pretty much manageable, though they may never go away completely.

Cat allergens are very small, microscopic even, and smaller in size compared to pollens or mold spores, the two other common airborne allergens.

First, remember the basics about cat allergens. They are typically airborne, so that means you have to breathe them in first before they can trigger any of your cat allergies symptoms. That means they stay suspended in the air longer and they can get through your nasal passages easier.

If you keep a cat around, the rate of recontamination goes higher. As your cat runs around the house, it sheds dander (dried skin cells) and proteins from its saliva and urine, raising the level of cat allergens in your house even more and causing you to get cat allergies more often.

Below are some steps you can take to reduce cat allergens in your home and, in the process, decrease your cat allergies as well:

Step 1: No more cats sleeping on the bed.

When you think about it, this is actually a very minimal price to pay. Think about itchy eyes, wheezing, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, rashes, swelling, and you’ll realize that not having your cat in your bed is not that terribly important. After all, when you have cat allergies but still insist on keeping a cat, you have to know that there are a few things that you have to give up to achieve a balance between your health and your love for your cat.

Step 2: Keep them out of the bedroom all together.

This is yet another small price to pay for allergy relief. To prevent air from other rooms in your house from contaminating your bedroom air, keep the door closed at all times. An air-conditioner or an air purifier would be of much help to keep your bedroom a sanctuary from cat allergies.

Step 3: Wash all bedding in 140-degree hot water at least twice monthly.

Because some of you may allow your cat to sneak up your bed every now and then, be sure to wash your beddings often. This will help reduce dust mites and cat allergens which you may unconsciously breathe in while sleeping.

Step 4: Use HEPA air filters in rooms where you usually keep your cat.

A HEPA air filter is high efficiency particulate air filter. Sometimes, even after you’ve thoroughly cleaned your house of all dust and dirt, a few cat allergens remain. They are often very difficult to remove. Air filters will help you clean the air in your room and keep cat allergens at a low level.

Step 5: Vacuum up cat allergen with high grade HEPA vacuum cleaner twice weekly.

Cat allergens often stick to walls, carpet, flooring, chairs, and furniture. During vacuuming, be sure to thoroughly check and clean these surfaces. Also, use hypo-allergenic vacuum bags to prevent the allergens from escaping and getting in the air while you clean.

Allergy Mold

Mold is a live organism that is found in both the indoors and outdoors.  Certain types of mold, like the black mold, can be found poison to human systems. It will break done dead material and grow by digesting animal or plant material.  It spreads by spores that are air-born and travel through the air.  Most molds are carried by the wind.  Molds love and grow quickly in dark, damp places.

These places could be a basement, garbage can, or rotting leaves.

On food, the mold is visible by being usually green and fuzzy.  Molds can also spread its roots and branches deep into the food which makes it unable to see to the eye.  This is why if you see mold growing on food you should throw it away.

Everyone is exposed to mold on a daily bases.  Usually these are not serious in anyway.  Some of the ways we could be exposed to mold is through the air or eat food that has mold spores that are just not visible yet.  People with mold allergies can tolerate mold to a certain point and then they will have a reaction from being exposed to too much mold at once.

Some of the symptoms of the mold allergy is wheezing, sinus problems, itchy or watery eyes, and a rash or hives. With this type of allergy, it is almost impossible to avoid the mold spores completely.  The mold spores are around us all the time.  What we can do to protect ourselves is to not eat food with signs of mold.  Just throw them a way.  You shouldn't smell foods that you think are spoiled because you are inhaling mold spores. You can also avoid certain foods like mushrooms, blue cheese, and yeast products.

Other common sources of mold are vinegar and foods containing vinegar, sour cream, sour milk, and buttermilk, yeasty foods, and sauerkraut. Anything that is pickled or smokes can cantain a mold.  Dry friuts are exposed to the mold spores because they are exposed to the air, and anything canned.  You want to aviod the most of these items that you can so you do not have an allergy attack

Cat and Dog Allergies

Some people cannot house cats or dogs because they have pet allergies.  Pet allergies can be torture if you are around pets on a daily bases.  Some people own cats are live with some one who owns a dog and this can be a problem for you if you're allergic.  You can be allergic to make different items when it comes to pet allergies.

You could be allergic to the inhaling of pet dander and hair; hair particles can be typically found in any pet owners home especially during the shedding times of year (spring, fall).  You could also be allergic to petting this animals and break out into a rash.

When it comes to medication, you will probably be given a pill or a cream.  Creams are for those who develop a rash from touching the dog or cat.  Pills are given to people who cannot breath when around these animals.  This is important to know what kind of person you are, so your doctor can prescribe you for your condition.  Usually, if you are allergic to touching an animal, the rash will only be on your hands.  You can develop hives due to your allergy because of the seriousness of your allergy.  Some people who have an allergy attack can make themselves sicker.

You can develop a fever, rash, or infection because an allergy.  This is why it is important that you try to resist scratching a rash or over-react.  You should always stay calm when in an allergy attack or it can get worse.  Some of the normal symptoms of an allergy are sinus problems, puffy or watery eyes, and sneezing or coughing.  Your breathing will be affected as well.

Pet dander allergens are very popular among children and adults.  You most likely won't grow out of it and your allergens could even get worse with age.  You should always seek a doctor's advice when you think that you have any kind of allergy.  They will prescribe you a medicine to comfort you and relieve your pain.  Also, you may want to keep your pills or medication on you at all times, because you never know when you'll be attacked by an allergen.

Latex Allergy

An increasing number of Americans are becoming allergic to latex, a natural substance derived from the milky sap of the rubber tree. Found in Africa, latex is used to make a variety of products, including rubber gloves, balloons, tires, condoms and diaphragms, and elastic bands. They may also be found in healthcare products, such as catheters, intravenous tubing, dressings, stethoscopes, syringes, and bandages. Many of these products cannot be avoided by both the consumer and the healthcare worker, so how can you control latex allergy reaction?

However, a growing number of allergic reactions may also be due to certain airborne allergens in the home. In fact, in 1990, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranked indoor air pollution as “a high priority health risk.”

First, you need to know that there are actually two sources of latex allergy, producing two distinct allergic reactions. The first type of latex allergy affects the immune system, resulting in minor skin rash. This type is often blamed on the chemical additives used in making the gloves.

The second latex allergy is a full-fledged allergic reaction to the latex itself. It results in more serious reactions, causing the person to develop itchy, red hives, rhinitis/hay fever, a runny nose, and asthma. In extreme cases, latex allergy may also cause anaphylaxis, a restriction of the air due to airway swelling, which, if not treated promptly, can cause sudden death.

The increase in prevalence of latex allergy is largely due to the increase of latex use. In the medical industry, doctors have been using latex to protect themselves from infectious diseases when touching a patient’s blood, urine, feces, or other organism that may pass on an infection. In addition, more and more medical professionals these days are using latex gloves for simple procedures that never required gloves in the past, such as checking the pus in a patient’s hand.

As a result of this increased exposure to latex, the occurrence of latex allergy also increased. Also, airborne latex particles have also been inhaled, triggering allergic reactions to people predisposed to develop latex allergy. A study confirmed that cornstarch used to coat the latex for easier use in putting gloves on and off absorbs the proteins and shed them into the air. This results in more people inhaling the particles, prompting latex allergy response.

Another way for you to avoid latex allergy reaction is to get yourself skin or blood-tested to determine if you have a positive response to latex. Knowing whether you have the allergy or not is always the first step in preventing the condition from occurring in the first place. So once you know, you can now take proper steps to avoid what causes your latex allergy.

For skin tests, a small solution of latex components is injected into the skin. The one conducting the test will know if you are allergic if swelling in the area occurs. Another method is blood testing. To test for latex allergy, a sample of your blood is taken and checked for certain types of allergy-producing antibodies, called IgE (immunoglobulin E).

For a person with latex allergy, exposure to latex could result in a number of symptoms, some of them even life-threatening. The signs may include nasal congestion, a runny nose, and asthma-like symptoms, including shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and wheezing. Other symptoms include skin rashes, pus, and itchy skin.
