Allergies Articles, Tips and Information

There are several different kinds of allergy, but perhaps the most common is food allergy. As its name suggests, this type of allergy is triggered when a reaction occurs after contact with a particular food to which you are sensitized. ‘Sensitized’ means that you have taken this food before. As the food enters the body, your immune system – your body’s natural defense – sees the food substance as harmful foreign substance and mounts an attack against the protein. It produces a specific type of antibodies called IgE to “fight off” the proteins.

This action of your own body’s immune system is what triggers an allergic response.

The response can range from mild or moderate to severe, including symptoms like swelling of the face and tongue, rash called “hives” (like nettle rash), breathing difficulties, runny nose and eyes, swelling of the throat, abdominal pain and bowel disturbances, nausea and vomiting and could to life threatening collapse (anaphylaxis).

Below are some practical tips to help you manage food allergy:

  1. Plan ahead. If you can, write a list of foods that you can tolerate and try to get some recipes which incorporate these. You may also consult your dietician and discuss or ask for any advice/help about special dietary alternatives or recipes that won’t trigger your allergy. Also, try your local libraries for recipes or contact allergy specialists for more information on sensitivities or recipes.

  1. If you are eating out, telephone the host or chef in advance and explain your needs. See if they will allow you to supply your own food. If not, perhaps they can adapt the menu for you. Always make it a point to discuss everything beforehand so you won’t get tempted to eat anything you shouldn’t.
  1. Take extra supplies whenever you go out. You might take longer than you originally planned so carrying a spare packed lunch or goodies with you can be a big help not only to stave off your hunger but also to keep you away from restaurants selling foods that may trigger your food allergy.

  1. It helps if you keep a food and symptom diary so when you have a reaction, you can pinpoint what triggered your symptoms. This also helps when you make your list of tolerable foods.
  1. Make everyone aware if you have a life-threatening allergy. That way, you don’t have to rely on yourself whenever you find yourself in a situation where you extremely tempted to eat foods you’re allergic to. Also, in case you unknowingly ingest foods that trigger your allergy, there would be someone there to help you.

  1. Freeze and bake so you have stocks of allowed foods and don’t have to bake every few days. This will make a wider selection of choice, too.

If you’re going abroad, obtain some Allergy translation cards so you are able to show them in different countries. Also, one of the first things you ought to do in a foreign place is to find out where the nearest hospital or doctor is in case of an emergency.

Allergy to milk

It's hard to be lactose intolerant.  You can such great food as cheese, yogurt, and ice cream that is sold and consumed every.  Cheese is an ingredient that is frequently used in almost any dish.  You may find that it's hard for you to digest dairy products.  You make feel sick, dizzy, and ill fevered after consuming these products.  You may also develop system problems with your lower intestines.

This is because your body is unable to process the matter and it then gets stuck in your waste track and causes you pains.  The pains may be so severe that you are unable to function or get sick.  Pain can cause you a fever and so on so it is important that you lean how to balance out your need for dairy and your allergy.

As for what is lactose, it is a sugar in milk and dairy products that is broken down in the lower intestines. The organ to help the body digest the substance usually produces its own lactose; it kind of cancels out the others.

Whatever works for you is what you should do.  You need to know that milk has calcium, which our bodies need.  If you are unable to have milk or dairy products as part of your diet, then you need to take supplements to help you feel better. Some infants are found to be lactose intolerant have special soy formulas to help the child get it's nutrients.

You should be able to contact your doctor about supplements.  He or she may even suggest that you drink soymilk.  Soymilk is produced from soybeans and contains no lactose.  You may want to drink soymilk that is calcium fortified so that you can get the same amount of calcium as you would with a glass of milk.

Family allergy

Allergies are serious to anyone.  They can make you feel awful and sickly.  It has been determined that allergies might be passed through family genes.  It is not determined, but they are studying their theory.  Scientist believes that your child will inherit your asthma or allergies through your bloodline.

You may find that a medication you take before consuming dairy products help you and for others you may need to have substitutes. You may have to take a calcium vitamin so you can receive nutrients needed for your teeth and bones and you can avoid the pains or cramps.  You may also need to take a pill afterwards to help coat your stomach, so the side effects aren't that bad.

To determine the difference between allergies and asthma attacks, you will need to fully look at your symptoms.  If your problems are asthmatic, then you have a hard time breathing sometimes and your chest feels tighten.  If you have allergies, you could have the same symptom as an asthmatic person, but you might also develop rashes, and have sinus problems.  Hay fever is usually closely tied with allergy attacks.

If both you and your significant other are asthmatic, you might want to observe your children's behavior as they grow up.  Asthma can be developed even in the toddler stage. You will want to pay attention to how they play and how easily they get winded.  A small child shouldn't get too windy too quickly, but still much faster than older child or teen.  Their little bodies get tuckered out moderately fast.

As for allergies, only time with tell if your child is allergic too.  If either you or your significant other has any type of food allergy, you may want to get the child tested before introducing them to such foods.  You should pay attention to your child when they are younger.  You should observe carefully to make sure that they do not display any signs of an allergy.  Usually, babies will show signs of lactose intolerant in the first year.  You will need to put them on a soy-based formula.

You may want to address any concerns that you may have with your family and allergies.  Your doctor should be able to inform you on alternatives and even testing information.  You may also want to ask your pediatrician for any signs of asthma when they are at their check up. They will also inform you of signs that you can look for when it comes to asthma with your child. It is best to inform yourself on both allergies and asthma if you are a parent.

Allergy and Sinus Relief

A lot of people who suffer from sinusitis say that the condition is a huge pain in the…nose. It hurts. It reduces your energy. It can cause mental fog. It interferes with sleep. It can dull your senses, make you hoarse, give you bad breath. It can do a lot of things, actually, except give you relief.

But what exactly is sinusitis and how is it related to allergy? Are there ways for you to get allergy and sinus relief?

Read below for a brief discussion on the two conditions.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. Your sinuses are those hollow areas somewhere under the bridge of your nose where the air you breathe passes through. With the onset of a bacterial infection, your sinuses get irritated, causing an inflammation that can last from a few days to longer than three months.

If your sinusitis is the longer-lasting type, then the condition is chronic. Chronic sinusitis is often preceded by a cold, flu, or allergy attack, which inflames the sinus membranes and blocks the sinuses’ drainage openings. As mucus collects, because of the blockage, bacteria find themselves good ground for breeding.

By reading the tag, you will be able to indicate if you are compatible with the fabric.  You may find that you may need to buy an unscented softener or switch brands due to the itchiness of your clothing. You will need to wash all articles of clothing that was cleaned with the fabric softener that ahs caused you to itch.

What is allergy?

An allergy is the result of a hypersensitive immune system. When a foreign substance enters the body, the immune system thinks that it is harmful and so starts building up antibodies to combat it. So, the next time the same substance is granted entrance, the body will have a way to “protect” itself. The problem with an allergic reaction is that the immune system produces antibodies en masse, often far too much than what is really required. As a result, the body reacts, thus causing the symptoms of allergies, such as nasal congestion, respiratory swelling, itches, rashes, difficulty breathing, and even fatal anaphylaxis.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of both sinusitis and allergy are often similar. That’s why diagnosis of either condition can be quite tricky. Sinusitis, however, is more often accompanied by facial pressure or pain, particularly when bending over, thick yellow or green mucus rather than clear or whitish mucus, and post-nasal drip, particularly at night, leading to a sore throat. In addition, chronic sinusitis can last longer than allergic reactions. For more information, check with your ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) doctor.

Allergy and Sinus Relief

Because allergy and sinusitis have more or less the same symptoms, the same treatment can be used for both. The purpose of allergy and sinus relief often is not to treat the condition itself but to alleviate the symptoms. Below are our top picks of products that offer allergy and sinus relief:

Nasal sprays are the perfect allergy and sinus relief products to help ease your breathing. The device is formulated to approximate the body’s natural salinity and electrolyte composition.

Skin allergies

You may find that you have sensitive skin and have many skin allergies.  You may not be able to use a certain fabric softener or wear a certain type of fabrics (like wool) because of the harshness of the chemicals or fabric.

People who have a skin allergy is most likely to break out in a rash.  If it is due to your fabric softener or clothes, it will be all over your body. You will begin to itch immediately and the skin will become inflamed.  It is important that you do not scratch.  Scratching causes infections that will make the rash even worse.

You will need to consult your doctor for a cream medication to get rid of the rash and give you some comfort.  You may find that you will be unable to wear anything with like lamb's wool or rabbit's wool.  When shopping or purchasing clothes, you will need to start to read the labels or tags on the shirts or item.

If you get hives or a severe rash, you should consult your doctor and ask for medication.  They will usually give you an anti-itch cream and maybe even a pill to get rid of any infections caused by your scratching habit.  You will need to talk to your doctor about maybe what brand of soap to purchase so that you don't break out again.  You may want to buy on of the more expensive brands, specifically made for those with sensitive skin.

These types of laundry soaps and softeners have no scent to them and have less harsh chemicals.  This is good for newborns, because they have extremely sensitive skin.  Most newborns are allergic to soaps and softeners because their skin is new to the world and the harsh chemicals that we grow to be use to.
